Rudy Brooks, 68, is a retired correctional officer. He is Nate's father, and came out to help his youngest son build a home on the frontier. Life on the frontier reminds him of growing up on his parents' farm in rural California during the 1940s, he says. His father had built their house by hand, and the family lived without electricity or paved roads, and had to dig a well for fresh water. The things he has missed most while living on the frontier are his wife, a more diverse diet, and golfing with his buddies. He has also missed modern hygiene, particularly clean clothes and bathing with regularity.
