From below ground to the consumer

Oil's journey from beneath the earth's surface to consumer usage takes many different routes. The various oil sites determine the equipment used, the businesses involved, environmental factors, political decisions, and the flow of huge amounts of money.

This section explores the specifics behind four oil sources in four drastically different locations across the globe. The BTC Pipeline (named after Baku, Azerbaijan; Tbilisi, Georgia; and Ceyhan, Turkey) runs more than a thousand miles miles through three nations. The Trans-Alaskan Pipeline travels 800 miles from Pruhdoe Bay to Valdez. Angola and Ecuador do not have distinctive pipelines, but both have long and complicated relationships with oil and the oil industry. The pages inside provide many details to the journey of oil.
