We are from John Hockaday. He owned three slaves. Our great-great-grandmother, Caroline, was told by her master (Hockaday) to leave Halifax County. It took months to get to Alliance. My family was semi-educated by Hockaday. He secretly taught the family how to read. When they arrived they built a church (New Hope Baptist Church in Harrisburg, Ohio) and they became sheep herders. My great great great grandfather, Jefferson Scott 1794-1907 lived for 113 years. He was born in Halifax County. My mother looks just like him! I also have the slave receipt with Caroline's name (line 4.pg16 ) on it from the Post Office Defiance, Ohio June 27,1870. The Highland Township 1850 Census shows John Hockaday born around1792. Had three girls Caroline, Lieuvenia and Barbara.
