My maternal great-grandfather, Lewis Layne, was born a slave in Floyd County, Kentucky. They referred to his father was Judge Layne. I do not know if the supposed father was a judge or if this was his real name. The way the story was told, he was a judge. I did find Lewis Layne and his brother, Ed Layne in the 1860 census, the first census where slaves were listed by name. Lewis was born in 1840 and his brother Ed was born in 1851. Their owner was listed as Elizabeth Layne. Lewis' brother Ed lived to be 105, until 1956 or 1957. I remember Ed Layne because we used to visit him at his home in Ohio.
