This week’s question: weddings in the movies. Saying “I do” has been enormously popular way of either beginning or ending movies—sometimes both. What’s your favorite wedding movie?
Noah Baumbach’s Margot at the Wedding is his most bitter and acidic comedy yet, which may make it his funniest and best. Nicole Kidman is wonderfully unlikeable as Margot, visiting her sister, Jennifer Jason Leigh, before she marries an unemployed layabout, Jack Black. Jonathan Demee’s Rachel Getting Married may have Anne Hathaway’s best performance as Kym, the recovering drug addict of Rachel.
As for Richard Pena, “I have a soft spot for Paul Hogan’s My Best Friend’s Wedding, along with Mira Nair’s lovely Monsoon Wedding. For more offbeat takes on them, check out Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain and Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia.”
