This week’s question: What’s your favorite Merchant-Ivory film?
It would be criminal to look past the towering achievement of Howard’s End, with career best performances from a star-studded cast including Anthony Hopkins, Vanessa Redgrave, and Helena Bonham Carter. Tony Pierce-Robert’s work with Merchant Ivory as the cinematographer is also in top form. Maurice, the film version of the novel by E. M. Forster, is also exquisite.
This is what our host Richard Peña has to say: “I’ll pick two favorites: from the early Indian-based period, The Householder; and among the more recent works, their brilliant adaptation of Mr. and Mrs. Bridge, with terrific performances by Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward in the title roles.”
