What’s your favorite film about television?

Peter Finch in Network

Paddy Chayefsky’s Network skewers so effectively the process behind and what goes on “the idiot box.” Starring Peter Finch as the crazed newsman, the film takes aim at the cynicism of the fake network UBS and how far they will go to get a good rating.

This week’s question: movies about television. How has the cinema depicted the upstart medium that so decisively replaced it in American life and culture?

And what about host Richard Peña? “I’ve always loved Frank Tashlin’s madcap Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?. More recently there’s Spike Lee’s Bamboozled, another film that has come to seem more relevant with each passing year.” Also of interest is James L. Brook’s romantic masterpiece Broadcast News, with a star-turning, career-defining performance by Holly Hunter.
