State of the Arts | Clip | Alice Childress Rediscovered
Plays by Alice Childress are suddenly relevant. In 1957, she was on the verge of being the first Black woman to have a play on Broadway, but she refused to compromise in order to make white audiences more comfortable. More than 60 years later, her work is having a renaissance, on Broadway and beyond, including Two River Theater in Red Bank and the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey in Madison.
