WNET UP NEXT: “BYkids” – Holly Carter

April 15, 2021

Over fourteen years ago, Holly Carter, a former print journalist and documentary filmmaker, created BYkids, a global movement that uses storytelling by film to inform, engage and inspire action.  BYkids pairs accomplished filmmakers with teens from around the world to create personal documentaries that encourage understanding about universal issues and help foster empathy and global citizenry.  In a conversation with host Tom Stewart, Holly brings her story to WNET Up Next and takes us behind the scenes for a look at the current season’s films  and  filmmakers.

In its third partnership with THIRTEEN and The WNET Group, Films BYkids is presenting four new films:   “Against the Current” takes us into the world of Daunette Moniz-Reyonne, who lives on a Native American Reservation in Nebraska.  Semon Shabaev is the creator  of “L’Chaim” which examines the resurgence of Jewish life in Berlin, Germany.  In “Faith’s World”,  Faith Guilbault shares her life as a teenager from Baltimore living with cerebral palsy.  Rinzin Jurmey is a young monk  facing the challenges of globalization in “Buddhism, Bhutan and Me”.  The series narrator is well-known actor and activist Ashley Judd.

Check your local listings for broadcast times and dates around the nation.  In the New York area, Films BYkids will be aired  on Sundays April 18th and 25th at 7:00PM on THIRTEEN. Beginning May 1st the films will be seen at 10:30PM on four consecutive Saturday evenings on WLIW.

There is an extensive collection of materials relating to the films on PBS Learning Media.  Pen Pal Schools will connect students in over 150 countries to share perspectives.  The films are available for streaming at thirteen.org/filmsbykids.  For additional  information go to  BYkids.org.
