In conjunction with the broadcast premiere of American Masters’ presentation of Stanley Nelson’s film: “Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool,” WNET Up Next recently paid a visit to New York’s famed Apollo Theater. During an Apollo Open House “Celebration of Cool”, the film had a preview screening followed by a panel discussion led by the anchor/ host of WBGO-FM’s Newark Today- NJTV News correspondent Michael Hill. Participants included filmmaker Stanley Nelson and a group of musicians and associates of Miles including Keyon Harrold, James Mtume, Angeleisha L. Rogers and Davis’ nephew, drummer Vince Wilburn.
The panelists reflected on their associations with Miles Davis and the film, which had its nationwide broadcast premiere on PBS on Tuesday evening February 25th. The film is now available for streaming via the American Masters website (pbs.org/milesdavis) and the THIRTEEN Explore app (thirteen.org/explore). The conversation also continues on social media by using the hashtag #MilesDavisPBS.
