WQXR, New York City’s only all classical music station, recently launched a podcast titled, Every Voice with Terrance McKnight. The podcast is a 16-episode series spotlighting marginalized voices, histories and perspectives in the Western classical music traditions. Joining MetroFocus is the host of the series, WQXR’s Terrance McKnight, who discusses the debut season of Every Voice exploring Black representation in opera through interviews with performers and educators, historical documents, and archival performance recordings.

Then, our CINDY Award-winning report takes you behind the scenes of the storytelling series, “The Moth,” to share the stories of struggle and triumph of women in the world.  We hear the emotional and inspiring story of Kusum Thapa, who shares her journey as a doctor who now trains frontline health workers in their response to Gender-based violence in Nepal.

Finally, an aid worker and committed journalist risks her life to help others in Yemen and to tell their story.

I WENT TO COLLEGE FOR MUSIC.

IN MOST PLACES IN OUR COUNTRY, IF YOU GO TO STUDY MUSIC IN COLLEGE, YOU STUDY WESTERN AND EUROPEAN MUSIC.

OFTEN TIMES, YOU BEGIN WITH MUSIC FROM THE RENAISSANCE, THERE IS A PARTICULAR FOCUS ON THE BAROQUE PERIOD . THAT IS HOW I WAS INTRODUCED TO OPERA AS A YOUNG PERSON AND I STARTED LOOKING AT IT AND THINKING ABOUT IT SERIOUSLY.

OKAY.

THAT IS IMPORTANT TO POINT OUT.

THIS DID HAPPEN AT A HISTORICAL AND BLACK UNIVERSITY.

I THINK THAT FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE, THE IDEA OF CLASSICAL MUSIC, WHICH DOES COME OUT OF THE EUROPEAN TRADITION WOULD SEEM TO NOT INCLUDE BLACK PEOPLE, BLACK CHARACTERS, BLACK VOICES, ET CETERA.

WHAT IS YOUR PODCAST ILLUMINATING THAT THEY MIGHT HAVE MISSED OR NOT FULLY UNDERSTOOD?

THE THING IS THAT OPERA IS AND WAS ENTERTAINMENT.

THERE WERE NOT MANY OPTIONS FOR ENTERTAINMENT BACK IN THE 1600S.

FOLKS THAT WERE OF A CERTAIN CLASS, WHO HAD MONEY, POWER, INFLUENCE , THAT WAS THE FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT.

SHOWING HOW MUCH MONEY YOU HAD AND HOW MUCH POWER YOU HAD ANY RATTLE MUSICIANS WORKING FOR YOU.

THEY WROTE MUSIC TO ENTERTAIN YOU.

A LOT OF THESE FOLKS THAT COULD AFFORD OPERA COULD AFFORD TO HAVE A PERFORMED AND THEY WERE INVESTED IN THE SLAVE TRADE.

I FIGURED THAT THIS IS ENTERTAINMENT FORM AND THE MESSAGES COMING THROUGH THIS ENTERTAINMENT FORM HAD TO ADDRESS SOME OF THE SOCIAL AND POLITICAL AND INDUSTRIAL THINGS THAT WERE HAPPENING.

THE MUSIC SUPPORTED THEIR PHILOSOPHY AND IDEOLOGY ABOUT WHO THEY WERE AND TO THE FOLKS THAT WERE BEING CAPTURED WERE.

CAN YOU GIVE US AN EXAMPLE OF SOME OF THE THEMES YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT HOW BLACK CHARACTERS WERE PRO-TRADE FOR THE AUDIENCE THAT WAS INVESTED IN THE TRANS-ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE?

THE FIRST ONE THAT WE DEAL WITH IS MOZART'S MAGIC FLUTE.

THE IN THE SECOND PART OF THE SERIES, WE COME BACK TO O TELLO, IT WAS WRITTEN BY SHAKESPEARE IN 1590 OR SO.

HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE POSITIVE INSTANCES OF BLACK ARTISTS BEING INVOLVED IN OPERA WHEN A STORY LIKE THAT OR A THEME LIKE THAT IS SO PROFOUND?

I AM AMERICAN.

WE ARE AMERICANS.

WE LIKE UNDERDOGS.

WE LIKE TO SEE THE PERSON FROM THE BOTTOM COME TO THE TOP AND IN A CASE LIKE THIS WHERE THIS GUY IS CAST AT THE LOWEST RUNG OF SOCIETY.

IF WE AS AUDIENCE MEMBERS AND DIRECTORS AND CONDUCTORS CAN EMPATHIZE WITH WHAT THIS MAN WANTS, HIS DESIRE FOR COMMUNITY AND HIS DESIRE FOR AFFECTION , IF WE CAN BRING THAT TO THE FRONT OF OUR INTERPRETATION AND HOW THIS FITS INTO THE STORY, THERE CAN BE A SHIFT.

IF WE CAN SEE THAT ANEMIA MAYBE WE CAN HAVE MORE EMPATHY FOR THE MAN SITTING ON THE BENCH AT HOME.

IN THIS PODCAST I AM TALKING ABOUT, WE BRING THE PAST AND THE PRESENT INTO THE STREETS WHERE WE HAVE TO WORK AND LOVE TOGETHER.

WHEN IN OPERA HAS BEEN AROUND FOR 200 YEARS, IT WILL BE CONTINUING TO PERFORM.

AND IT WILL TRY TO OTHER THIS CHARACTER.

I THINK THERE IS A TEACHING MOMENT HERE.

THERE ARE CANCELLATIONS OF CERTAIN STORIES AND CERTAIN HISTORY.

I'M NOT SURE THAT FOLKS WILL CANCEL MOZART.

I'M GOING TO FIND A WAY TO BRING A BROADER PERSPECTIVE AND BRING MY OWN PERSONAL HISTORY INTO THAT STORY TO INSPIRE SOMEONE ELSE.

TO FIND A WAY THROUGH YOUR MUSIC OF MINISTERING TO EVERYONE NO MATTER IF YOU KNOW THEM OR NOT, YOU NEED TO USE YOUR MUSIC TO HELP SOMEBODY AND YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT SOMEONE IS GOING THROUGH WHEN THEY WALK THROUGH THIS DOOR.

WITH MY OPPORTUNITY FOR RADIO, THAT IS SORT OF MY FOCUS.

HE WAS VERY SIMILAR, THERE WERE CASES WHERE PEOPLE TRY TO CALL BEETHOVEN --HE LIKES TO LISTEN TO FOLK MUSICIANS AND IF I CAN BRING THESE TWO GUYS TOGETHER AND WITH A FORCED INTEGRATION OF CULTURE ACROSS TWO DIFFERENT CENTURIES THAT THEY BOTH HAVE THIS ABILITY TO SPEAK DIRECTLY FROM THEIR HEART TO THE HEARTS OF THE LISTENERS.

BEETHOVEN'S MUSIC AND LANGSTON'S POETRY TOGETHER THE WAY THAT I WAS HOPING TO BRING TWO DIFFERENT AUDIENCES TOGETHER.

I WANT YOU TO CHANGE THE REPORT OF A YOUNG GIRL THAT YOU EXAMINED TWO MONTHS BACK.

ONE OF THE PEOPLE THAT GAVE THE REPORT IS ONE OF HER CAREGIVERS AND IS IN CUSTODY AND WE WANTED SEXUAL ASSAULT THEN YOU WILL KNOW THE CONSEQUENCES IF YOU DO NOT.

I WAS FRIGHTENED.

I DID NOT KNOW WHAT THIS MEANT FOR ME.

ONCE WE HAVE THOSE CONVERSATIONS TO PULL OUT ALL THE PIECES, WE TRY TO FIGURE OUT HOW WE CAN PUT IT BACK TOGETHER AGAIN SO THAT THERE IS A DEFINABLE PERSONAL ARC.

THESE GIRLS DESERVE JUSTICE, THEY DESERVE TO LIVE WITH DIGNITY AND I DECIDED I WOULD BE THEIR VOICE.

IN THE END, THERE WERE LOTS OF PEOPLE THAT CAME TO ME AND HELD MY HANDS AND REALLY CONGRATULATED ME.

THE EXPRESSION WHICH THEY HAD OF LIVING THOSE MOMENTS WITH ME.

OVER THE COURSE OF THE CONFLICT , 10,000 YEMENIS HAVE DIED AND OVER 10,000 INJURED LEAVING 22 MILLION IN NEED OF HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE, HALF OF WHICH ARE CHILDREN.

WITH A HUMANITARIAN CRISIS INCREASING, GROUPS LIKE CARE ARE NEEDED.

HERE TO TALK ABOUT THE RELIEF WORK IS BUSHRA ALDUKHAINAH AND DESPITE BEING READ -- DISPLACED, SHE JOINS ME NOW.

WELCOME TO THE PROGRAM.

THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT ARE IN NEED OF HELP IS NOT THOUSANDS OR SOMETHING, IT IS 22.2 MILLION THAT ARE IN DESPERATE NEED OF HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE.

DEATH AND LIFE FOR CHILDREN AND WOMEN WHO ARE DYING ON A DAILY BASIS.

ARE WE TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE WHO ARE BEING STARVED, ARE THEY EXPOSED TO A LOT OF DISEASE?

WHAT KIND OF HUMANITARIAN CRISIS ARE WE TALKING ABOUT?

IT IS MULTIPLE HUMANITARIAN CRISIS IS WE ARE TALKING ABOUT.

PEOPLE ARE DYING EVERY DAY, STARVING, 11 MILLION PEOPLE ARE IN THE BRINK OF FAMINE AND WE ARE TALKING ABOUT HOMELESS PEOPLE, PEOPLE WHO HAVE LOST THEIR INCOME, RESOURCES, THEIR LIVES, THEIR HOUSES, THEIR BELOVED ONES, PEOPLE WHO ARE DYING FROM AIRSTRIKES OR DISEASES LIKE CHOLERA OR BACTERIA, THAT IS WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE RELIEF ORGANIZATION WHEN YOU WERE A VICTIM OF THIS CONFLICT?

I JOINED CARE INTERNATIONAL AND SINCE THEN I STARTED MY CAREER WITH THEM.

WHEN THE LATEST EVENTS HAPPENED IN 2015, I WAS DOING HUMANITARIAN WORK AND I WAS DISPLACED FROM THE AREA THAT WE WERE LIVING , I WAS OVERSEEING MORE THAN 20 STAFF AT THAT TIME AND WE WERE PROVIDING HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE TO THE DISPLACED PEOPLE.

AT THAT TIME, IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE.

THE DAY THAT I MOVED OUT OF MY HOUSE, LEAVING EVERYTHING BEHIND TOYS WITH ME , HE WAS TELLING ME, CAN WE TAKE THE TOYS WITH US?

WE HAVE LESS THAN TWO HOURS TO LEAVE.

I HAVE TO ORGANIZE EVERYONE'S DEPARTURE AT THAT TIME.

IT WAS REALLY CRITICAL, AIRSTRIKES WERE SO HEAVY, WE HAD TO RUN FOR OUR LIVES.

I TOLD HIM THAT WE WILL COME BACK FOR IT IN TWO WEEKS OR MONTHS BUT IT NEVER HAPPENED.

EVERYTHING WAS JUST DESTROYED.

THAT SOUNDS DEVASTATING.

FOR A YOUNG CHILD THAT ALL OF THE YOUNG CHILDREN THAT ARE LIVING THROUGH THIS CRISIS, IT IS THAT MUCH MORE IMPACTFUL.

CAN YOU SHARE WITH US WHAT THIS IS BEEN LIKE FOR YOUR OWN SON?

IT IS BEEN VERY DIFFICULT FOR HIM.

IT IS SO HARD FOR HIM TO ADOPT AND LIVE A NORMAL LIFE LIKE ANY

WOW.

CONSIDERING WHAT IS GOING ON.

THERE IS HUMANITARIAN SUPPORT FROM U.S.

ORGANIZATIONS THAT ARE PART OF THE HUMANITARIAN FACTORS IN YEMEN.

THAT IS NOT THE ONLY THING THAT SHOULD BE DONE DURING THE CRISIS RIGHT NOW.

WHATEVER SUPPORT CAN BE PROVIDED TO YEMEN IS NOT ENOUGH.

PROVIDING PEACE TOO MANY PEOPLE.

WE ARE TALKING ABOUT 22.2 MILLION PEOPLE IN NEED.

PEOPLE WHO ARE SEEING THIS SOMETHING, WHAT CAN THE AVERAGE NEW YORKER DUE TO SOME OF WHAT THE PEOPLE IN YEMEN?

EVERYONE SHOULD ADVOCATE FOR PEACE FOR YEMEN IN THE FIRST PLACE AND SOME SUPPORT TO THE HUMANITARIAN WORKERS IN YEMEN.

I WOULD TALK PEACE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

WHAT DOES PEACE LOOK LIKE IN THE FIRST PLACE?

AND DATING THE DEATHS OF INNOCENT WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

THAT IS THE PIECE I AM TALKING ABOUT.
