MetroFocus: November 5, 2021

Nearly forty years after his wife’s disappearance, Robert Durst has been charged with second-degree murder and faces another trial in New York. But how did he elude Westchester prosecutors for so long? The real estate heir is finally confessing he had a ‘playbook’ on getting away with murder. Tonight, we rebroadcast a chilling conversation with ex-Westchester DA Jeanine Pirro, who re-opened the investigation into Durst over twenty years ago, about how she says “He Killed Them All.”

Tonight we revisit our conversation with New York Governor David Paterson about his remarkable time in the state’s history and the many experiences he recounts in his book, “Black, Blind, & In Charge: A Story of Visionary Leadership and Overcoming Adversity.”

> I WAS HAVING A LATE AFTERNOON DINNER PARTY FOR MY FAMILY.

KATHY WASN'T REALLY INVITED.

WHEN KATHY CALLED ME THIS MORNING, I'M NOT GOING TO TELL MY BEST FRIEND NO.

EVERYBODY WAS GETTING ALONG AND EVERYBODY WAS ENJOYING, YOU KNOW.

IT WAS JUST A NICE EVENING.

AND I CAN REMEMBER VERY CLEARLY THE TELEPHONE CALLS AND BOBBY INSISTING THAT KATHY COME HOME AND KATHY BEING VISIBLY SHAKEN AFTER THE PHONE CALLS.

SHE WENT OUT, WARMED UP THE MERCEDES, CAME BACK IN AND SAID, I'M LEAVING NOW.

WE STOOD ON THE FRONT PORCH AND SHE SAID TO ME, GILBERTA, PROMISE ME, IF SOMETHING HAPPENS, CHECK IT OUT, I'M AFRAID OF BOBBY.

I SAID, OF COURSE.

IT DIDN'T EVEN REGISTER THAT SHE WAS TELLING ME THAT FOR SOME DREADFUL REASON.

I JUST DIDN'T GET IT.

'I KILLED THEM ALL.'

THOSE WERE THE WORDS UTTERED BY CONVICTED KILLER ROBERT DURST.

DURST HAD BEEN INVESTIGATED MORE THAN ONCE FOR THE 1982 DISAPPEARANCE OF HIS WIFE KATHLEEN.

HE WAS CHARGED BUT ACQUITTED IN THE 2001 MURDER OF HIS NEIGHBOR MORRIS BACK AND IS NOW AWAITING TRIAL FOR THE 2000 KILLING OF HIS CLOSE FRIEND SUSAN BERMAN.

SOME QUESTION THE VALIDITY OF DURST'S REMARKS IN THE HBO SERIES BUT 'THE JINX' BROUGHT RENEWED INTEREST IN A CASE THAT CAPTIVATED NEW YORK YEARS AGO AND CONSUMED DISTRICT ATTORNEY JEANINE PIRRO.

SHE HAS VOWED TO PROVE THAT DURST WAS IN FACT HER KILLER.

JEANINE PIRRO CHRONICLES, INVESTIGATION OF DURST IN HER NEW BOOK 'HE KILLED THEM ALL: ROBERT DURST AND MY QUEST FOR JUSTICE.'

GOOD TO SEE YOU.

GOOD TO SEE YOU TOO.

TELL ME WHY THIS HAS BECOME YOUR QUEST.

IT WAS 1999.

IF YOU CAN VISUALIZE, I'M THE SITTING D.A., I'M SITTING AT MY DESK AND THEY COME IN AND SAY, BOSS, WE HAVE SOME DIRT BAG SEX OFFENDER, HE SAYS THERE'S A WOMAN'S BODY.

I'M WRITING AND THERE'S A PHONE BLINKING AND ALL KINDS OF STUFF GOING ON, OBVIOUSLY.

THEY SAY HER NAME IS KATHLEEN DURST AND HER HUSBAND IS ROBERT DURST.

DID YOU KNOW ANY OF THIS STORY BEFOREHAND?

NOTHING.

THAT'S WHAT'S SO INCREDIBLE ABOUT IT.

I ADDRESS THAT IN THE BOOK.

I SAID, DO YOU HAVE REASON TO BELIEVE THIS TIP?

AND THEY SAID, NO.

I SAID, TELL ME ABOUT HER.

THEY SAID, SHE'S A FOURTH YEAR MEDICAL STUDENT ABOUT TO GRADUATE AND HER HUSBAND WAITED FIVE DAYS TO REPORT HER MISSING.

THAT'S ALL I NEEDED TO HEAR.

I WAS ALL IN AT THAT POINT.

IF YOU RECALL, I STARTED THE FIRST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE UNIT IN THE NATION.

AND SO MY ANTENNAS WENT UP AND THAT BEGAN A JOURNEY, AN ODYSSEY.

I KICKED THE BEE'S NEST AND PEOPLE HAVE BEEN STUNG FOR THE LAST 15 YEARS WITH THIS ONE, INCLUDING ME.

THERE WAS AN INVESTIGATION BEFORE THIS CAME ACROSS HYOUR DESK.

THIS WASN'T NEW, THIS CASE HAS BEEN FLOATING OUT THERE A WHILE.

WHAT WAS THE LEVEL AND THE EXTENT OF THAT INVESTIGATION?

WHY DID IT NOT GO ANYWHERE?

YOU CALL IT AN INVESTIGATION.

I THINK ANY COP STUDYING LAW ENFORCEMENT 101, CRIME SCENE, POLICE INVESTIGATIONS, WOULD SAY IT WAS A JOKE.

IT WAS 1982.

NEW YORK CITY.

ONE OF THE RICHEST FAMILIES IN NEW YORK.

THEIR DAUGHTER-IN-LAW GOES MISSING.

AND THERE'S TWO ARTICLES IN 'THE TIMES' ABOUT IT.

THERE'S VIRTUALLY NO DISCUSSION OTHER THAN, YOU KNOW, SHE WAS IN NEW YORK AND THE DOORMAN SAW HER AND SHE PROBABLY RAN OFF WITH ANOTHER GUY AND SHE MAY HAVE HAD A HANGOVER.

IT WAS EASY, JACK, BACK THEN TO THINK THAT WOMEN WERE, NUMBER ONE, DISPENSABLE AND THEY WERE SLUTS, OF COURSE SHE RAN OFF WITH ANOTHER GUY, BUT NOBODY KNEW WHO HE WAS OR WHAT HE LOOKED LIKE.

IT WAS ALL MADE-UP STUFF.

WHEN I GOT THE FILE FROM MY STAFF, I SAID, THIS IS CRAZY.

THEY DIDN'T INVESTIGATE, THE NYPD, THEY DIDN'T TALK TO ANY OF THE NEIGHBORS THAT DURST SAID COULD GIVE HIM SOME ALIBI-ISH BACKUP.

DO YOU THINK MOST OF THIS -- YOU TALK ABOUT SOME OTHER FACT FACTORS.

I WAS A PROSECUTOR AROUND THE SAME TIME, I KNOW HOW DIFFICULT IT WAS.

BUT DO YOU THINK MORE OF THIS WAS BECAUSE OF THE DURST FAMILY NAME, PEOPLE WERE SAYING, WE'LL LET THIS ONE GO?

LET ME ASK YOU A QUESTION, JACK.

IF GOD FORBID DONALD TRUMP'S DAUGHTER-IN-LAW DISAPPEARED, IF SOMEONE SAID, SHE PROBABLY RAN OFF WITH ANOTHER GUY, THAT WOULD PROBABLY BE THE END OF IT?

THERE WAS NO SEARCH TEAM.

THERE WAS NOTHING.

THERE WASN'T THE CRYING HUSBAND.

AND THAT'S WHAT LEADS US TO HOMICIDE NUMBER TWO, THE HUSBAND'S BEST FRIEND SUSAN BERMAN IS THE SPOKESPERSON WHO SAYS, SHE RAN OFF WITH ANOTHER GUY.

AND ALL OF A SUDDEN, SO PEOPLE WHO FOLLOW THIS ALL, SUSAN BERMAN IS SORT OF WORKING AS A SPOKESPERSON, THAT'S FINE, SHE JUST RAN OFF.

SUSAN BERMAN GETS SUBPOENAED TO TESTIFY, OR SHE'S GOING TO BE INTERVIEWED.

YEAH.

AND ALL OF A SUDDEN SUSAN BERMAN ENDS UP WITH A BULLET IN HER HEAD.

BULLET IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD, EXECUTION STYLE.

AND EVERYONE SAID, OH, OH, HER FATHER WAS DAVEY BERMAN IN LAS VEGAS, HE WAS A MOBSTER, SHE WROTE THE BOOK 'EASY STREET,' INTERVIEWED ON THE 'TODAY' SHOW, AND AT THE END OF THE DAY, THEY SAID, EH, IT'S PROBABLY HIM.

I'M LIKE, WAIT A MINUTE, L.A., ROBERT DURST KILLED HER.

AND HERE'S THE THING.

THERE IS A CADAVER NOTE KEY IN 'THE JINX' DOCUMENTARY AND IT'S WRITTEN IN GREEN INK.

WHAT PEOPLE DON'T KNOW IS THAT ROBERT DURST ONLY WROTE IN GREEN INK.

GREEN, THE COLOR OF MONEY THAT HE LOVED SO MUCH.

I HAVE ALL THESE LITTLE SECRETS IN MY BOOK.

LITERALLY, IF THIS WAS FICTION, YOU WOULD SAY THAT'S KIND OF TOO MUCH.

OVER THE TOP.

LET ME ASK YOU THIS.

SO YOU'RE PART OF THIS DOCUMENTARY.

YEAH.

WHAT DID YOU THINK WHEN YOU FIRST SAW THAT SCENE AND HEARD HIM SAY THOSE WORDS, 'I KILLED THEM ALL'?

I WAS SITTING IN ANDREW'S APARTMENT TO WATCH THE LAST EPISODE CHAPTER.

AND WITH A LOT OF THE PLAYERS, THE McCORMICK FAMILY, KATHLEEN'S BROTHER, THE NIECE WHO LOOKS JUST LIKE KATHLEEN LOOKED IN 1982.

AND I REMEMBER SAYING TO MYSELF, OF COURSE YOU DID, YOU DIRTBAG, I KNEW IT ALL ALONG.

AND THERE WAS SOME QUIET SOBBING TO MY LEFT.

I DESCRIBE ALL THIS IN THE FIRST CHAPTER OF MY BOOK 'HE KILLED THEM ALL.'

I SAID TO MYSELF, THERE WAS NEVER A QUESTION, ALL THE INDICATORS WERE THERE.

HERE IS A GUY WHOSE BROTHER LATER SAYS HIS DOGS WERE DISAPPEARING, HE'S PROBABLY KILLING HIS DOGS, HE CALLED THEM IGORS, HE WAS A GUY WHO KILLED WHEN HE NEEDED TO.

HE KNEW WE WERE GOING TO SPEAK TO SUSAN BERMAN IN L.A., 'WE' BEING THE WESTCHESTER D.A.'S OFFICE AND MY TASK FORCE.

THEY SAID, HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT?

I HAD IT LOCKED DOWN QUIET.

THERE WAS A LEAK FROM A STATE TROOPER.

I TALK ABOUT THIS YEARS LATER.

I AND MY TEAM WAS LIVID AND I SAID, I CAN'T BELIEVE IT, HE LET DURST KNOW.

AND WHAT YOU DO, JACK, AND YOU KNOW THIS, IS YOU SAVE THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSON FOR THE END OF THE INVESTIGATION.

YOU GET ALL OF THE LITTLE INFORMATION FROM THIS ONE AND THIS ONE, AND YOU GO LOADED FOR BEAR WITH THAT KEY WITNESS.

AND SHE WAS, HE KNEW IT.

HE SENT HER $25,000 CHECKS BEFORE WE GOT THERE TO SHUT HER UP, AND HE KILLED HER.

SO KILLS HER, THERE'S YOUR WITNESS THAT YOU'RE COUNTING ON WHO IS NOW NO LONGER WITH YOU.

WAS THAT THE END OF THAT INVESTIGATION?

I MEAN, YOU DID A REAL INVESTIGATION.

OH, YES.

BUT BASICALLY DID YOU HIT A STONEWALL AT THAT POINT IN TIME?

AS I RECALL, IT WAS ABOUT THAT TIME THAT, YOU KNOW, WE KIND OF GOT EVEN MORE FIRED UP, BECAUSE I SAID, THIS GUY COULD BE A SERIAL MUDRDERER.

LO AND BEHOLD, HE'S ACCUSED OF A MURDER IN GALVESTON, TEXAS.

I SENT MY GUYS DOWN THERE, I WENT DOWN THERE AS WELL.

WHAT I WANTED WHEN I WENT DOWN THERE, I WANTED TO SPEAK TO THE D.A. AND SAY I NEED CLOSURE FOR KATHLEEN'S FAMILY, IT'S BEEN SINCE 1982, IT'S NOW 2001, WE NEED CLOSURE.

WE NEVER FOUND HER BODY.

HE NEVER ADMITTED A THING.

THIS TRIAL IN TEXAS, 'BIZARRE' MIGHT BE THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE IT.

HE ADMITS THAT HE DISMEMBERED HIS FRIEND MORRIS BLACK BUT SAYS HE DIDN'T KILL HIM.

I DIDN'T COVER IT, I DIDN'T SEE ALL THE FACTS AND THE DETAILS, BUT IT SEEMED LIKE A STRANGE VERDICT, FOR THE JURY TO COME BACK AND SAY NOT GUILTY OF THE MURDER.

I KNEW FROM THE GET-GO, THIS WAS ABOUT MONEY AND POWER IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, PERVERTING THE SCALES OF JUSTICE.

AND SO YOU'VE GOT ROBERT DURST GOING TO GALVESTON, PAYING $1.5 MILLION FOR THE BEST LAWYERS HE COULD FIND WHO SOLD A BIFLL OF GOODS TO THESE HALF WIT JURORS WHO TO THIS DAY THINK I CHASED ROBERT DURST AND THAT'S WHY HE HAD TO KILL AND CHOP THE BODY UP BECAUSE JEANINE PIRRO FROM NEW YORK FORCED BOBBY TO DO THIS, IF SHE HAD ONLY KEPT HER MOUTH SHUT, NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED.

THAT'S AT THE TRIAL.

EVERY DAY I'M GETTING CALLS FROM THE PRESS, WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THIS?

EVERY TIME PRESS PEOPLE CAME IN THEY WOULD HAVE TO PEEL ME OFF THE CEILING.

DO YOU THINK THERE WILL EVER BE ANY RESOLUTION OF THE KATHLEEN DURST CASE?

WILL WE EVER KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO HER?

YOU KNOW, JACK, I BELIEVE THAT SOONER OR LATER WE WILL.

AT LEAST NOW WE KNOW HE SAID HE KILLED THEM ALL.

I BELIEVE SHE'S IN THE PINE BARRENS.

I'VE DONE MANY VISITS THERE, I'VE HAD MY INVESTIGATORS GO THERE.

HE MADE CALLS FROM THE PINE BARRENS.

HE WAS IN A LAUNDROMAT.

HERE'S THE SCARIEST PART OF IT.

I THINK HE CHOPPED HER UP, BECAUSE WHEN ASKED IN 'THE JINX' WHAT WERE THEY LOOKING FOR IN THE LAKE, THAT LAKE WHEN I WAS INITIALLY LOOKING FOR A BODY.

HE SAYS, NOT MY WIFE, NOT MY WIFE'S BODY.

HE SAYS, BODY PARTS.

YOU KNOW, SO IF YOU READ THE BOOK, YOU'LL SEE THERE'S A LOT OF THINGS I SAW IN 'THE JINX' THAT YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE CAUGHT.

THAT'S WHEN I SAID, I'M WRITING THIS BOOK.

IT'S A FASCINATING BOOK, IT'S A GREAT READ.

TO THINK THAT IT'S NOT FICTION IS SOMEWHAT BREATHTAKING.

A GOOD BOOK FOR ANYBODY.

ALWAYS GOOD TO SEE YOU.

GOOD TO SEE YOU, JACK.

THANK YOU FOR JOINING US.

THE HBO DOCUMENTARY 'THE JINX' CAN BE SEEN ON HBO NOW AND JUDGE JEANINE PIRRO CAN BE SEEN ON SATURDAY NIGHTS, 9:00 P.M. ON FOX NEWS CHANNEL.

> GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO 'METROFOCUS.'

I'M JENNA FLANAGAN.

THERE IS USUALLY AN UNDERSTANDING ABOUT BEING IN A SUPPORTIVE ROLE TO THE EXECUTIVE IN CHIEF.

BUT THERE ARE OCCASIONS WHEN THE SECOND IN COMMAND SUDDENLY COMES FIRST.

FORMER NEW YORK GOVERNOR DAVID PATERSON KNOWS ALL TOO WELL ABOUT THAT.

ON MARCH 10 OF 2008, THE THEN-LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR RECEIVED A PHONE CALL THAT WOULD CHANGE HIS LIFE AND BEFORE HE KNEW IT HE WENT FROM MANHATTAN STATE SENATOR TO LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR TO GOVERNOR IN JUST OVER TWO YEARS.

HE WAS ALSO THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN AND THE FIRST BLIND PERSON TO EVER HOLD THE POSITION OF GOVERNOR IN THE EMPIRE STATE.

IT'S A DIZZYING CHANGE FOR ANYBODY, AND GOVERNOR PATERSON RECOUNTS THOSE EXPERIENCES AND MORE IN HIS NEW MEMOIR, 'BACK, BLIND AND IN CHARGE.'

I WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME HIM TO 'METROFOCUS.'

GOVERNOR PATERSON, IT'S A GREAT PLEASURE TO HAVE YOU ON THE SHOW.

THANK YOU, JENNA, GREAT TO BE ON THE SHOW.

LET'S GO BACK TO THAT MOMENT WHEN YOU GOT THAT FIRST PHONE CALL ABOUT THE SCANDAL THAT GOVERNOR SPITZER HAD FOUND HIMSELF IN.

WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION?

I WOULD SAY MILD SHOCK.

OBVIOUSLY THE GOVERNOR'S SECRETARY AND THE GOVERNOR AND MANY PEOPLE KNEW THAT THIS PROBLEM EXISTED THREE DAYS BEFORE.

AND THEY DECIDE TO TELL ME ABOUT AN HOUR AND TEN MINUTES BEFORE THE GOVERNOR IS GOING TO RESIGN AT 2:15 THAT AFTERNOON.

SO I WAS SITTING IN MY OFFICE WHEN HE CALLED ME.

AND HE WAS WHISPERING BECAUSE HE WAS IN THE GOVERNOR'S BATHROOM BECAUSE THE GOVERNOR FORBID ANYONE TO SPEAK TO ME ABOUT IT, HE SAID HE WOULD DO THAT HIMSELF.

BUT THE SECRETARY IS NOW REALIZING IT'S SO CLOSE TO THE TIME THAT I'M GOING TO BECOME GOVERNOR WHEN HE REMINDED THE GOVERNOR OF THAT, HE SAID, WE'LL JUST GIVE HIM SOMETHING TO READ.

HE SAID, GOVERNOR, HE DOESN'T READ, HE MEMORIZES AND I DON'T THINK HE HAS ENOUGH TIME TO MEMORIZE WHATEVER THIS STATEMENT IS.

REMEMBER, IN AN HOUR HE'LL BE THE GOVERNOR AND THE FIRST THING HE'LL ASK ALL OF US IS WHY DID YOU PUT ME IN THAT POSITION.

I WAS A LITTLE SHOCKED, AND I TOLD MY SECRETARY THAT I WAS GOING TO LEAVE THE BUILDING SO I WOULDN'T BE A PART OF, YOU KNOW, ANY MEDIA HUNT OVER ME.

AND I OPENED THE DOOR TO LEAVE MY OFFICE, AND ABOUT 15 CAMERAS WENT OFF IN MY FACE.

AND I CLOSED THE DOOR AND I PUT MY BACK TO THE DOOR AND I SAID TO MY SECRETARY, I THINK MY LIFE JUST CHANGED.

AS SERIOUS AS THAT MOMENT REALLY WAS, SO MANY OF THE STORIES IN THIS BOOK ALMOST READ LIKE THEY COULD BE IN A -- I HATE TO SAY BUT ALMOST A SA SATIRICAL STORY ABOUT POLITICS.

I SAY THAT BECAUSE YOU TOOK IT UPON YOURSELF TO LET SOME OTHER KEY PLAYERS IN ALBANY KNOW, AND ACTUALLY THROUGHOUT NEW YORK POLITICS.

AND THE FIRST PERSON WHO CALLED YOU BACK, THAT WAS AN AWKWARD PHONE CALL.

MY FATHER BASIL PATERSON, WHO HAD BEEN THE FIRST AFRICAN VICE CHAIR OF THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC COMMITTEE AND SECRETARY OF STATE TO GOVERNOR KERRY AND HAD ALWAYS INCREDIBLE WISDOM IN SITUATIONS LIKE THAT, TOLD ME YOU BETTER TELL THE OTHER LEADERS OF THE STATE, THE GOVERNOR HASN'T EVEN SPOKEN TO YOU AND IN AN HOUR THEY'LL ASK YOU WHY YOU DIDN'T TELL THEM WHAT WAS GOING ON.

SENATOR CLINTON WAS IN A HOT PRIMARY AGAINST SENATOR OBAMA WHO WOULD EVENTUALLY BECOME THE PRESIDENT.

SHE WAS THE FIRST ONE TO CALL BACK, WHICH KIND OF SHOCKED ME.

AND SHE SAID, IS EVERYTHING ALL RIGHT?

I GOT AN OMINOUS FEELING WHEN I GOT THIS MESSAGE FROM YOU.

I SAID, SENATOR, LISTEN, IN ABOUT A HALF HOUR I'M GOING TO BE SWORN IN AS GOVERNOR.

SHE SAID, OH, MY GOD, WHAT'S HAPPENED?

I SAID, NO, SENATOR, THE GOVERNOR IS FINE BUT HE'S GOING TO RESIGN IN ABOUT A HALF HOUR.

SHE SAID, WHY IS HE GOING TO RESIGN, DAVID?

I JUST LOOKED UP AT THE CEILING AND THOUGHT, HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN ANOTHER SEX SCANDAL TO HILLARY CLINTON?

AGAIN, IT'S JUST -- AGAIN, IT'S STORY AFTER STORY LIKE THIS.

I THINK MOST PEOPLE CAN UNDERSTAND THE SURPRISE OF, LET'S SAY, HAVING AN UNEXPECTED PROJECT TOSSED IN YOUR LAP, BUT CERTAINLY NOT THE GOVERNORSHIP OF NEW YORK.

AND I WAS WONDERING, DID YOU GET A MOMENT TO EVEN TRY TO PROCESS ALL OF THIS ONCE YOU GOT THOSE PHONE CALLS?

YOU KNOW, WHAT'S SO INTERESTING, JENNA, IS THAT WHEN I BECAME THE MINORITY LEADER, MY STAFF WENT FROM SEVEN TO 150 IN A MATTER OF DAYS.

WITHIN TWO WEEKS I REALIZED I DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO MANAGE 150 PEOPLE.

I WENT TO A FRIEND OF MINE WHO RAN ONE OF THOSE STRATEGIC PLANNING COMPANIES, AND THEY HAD A SESSION WITH ME TO ADVISE ME ON HOW YOU MANAGE A STAFF THAT'S, YOU KNOW, NOT JUST TEN OR 15 PEOPLE.

I WOULD HAVE DONE THE SAME THING WHEN I WAS GOVERNOR BUT I FORGOT ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED WHEN I WAS MINORITY LEADER, BECAUSE IT WAS JUST CRISIS AFTER CRISIS.

WE HAD TO PASS THE STATE BUDGET 13 DAYS AFTER I TAKE OFFICE, AND WE DID.

WE HAD TO SETTLE THE ISSUE OF CONGESTION PRICING BY APRIL 9, AND WE DID THAT.

IT WAS ONE THING AFTER THE OTHER.

AND I REALLY WISH I HAD STOPPED, REGROUPED, REPOSITIONED THE STAFF, AND BROUGHT IN PEOPLE WHO I THINK WOULD HAVE BETTER FIT WHAT THE GOALS WERE THAT I WANTED TO ACCOMPLISH.

AND WE'RE GOING TO GET INTO SOME OF THE PEOPLE THAT YOU WERE AT LEAST ATTEMPTING TO WORK WITH.

BUT AGAIN, I JUST WANT TO GO BACK TO THE POINT THAT THIS BOOK ALMOST -- IF IT GIVES THE READER LIKE ME WHIPLASH, I CAN'T IMAGINE WHAT IT WAS ACTUALLY LIKE TO LIVE THROUGH ISSUE AFTER ISSUE, CRISIS AFTER CRISIS.

BUT I DO WANT TO DRAW ON YOUR 20 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AS A STATE SENATOR AND AS YOU SAID, ALSO THE MINORITY LEADER IN ALBANY, AND SAY THAT THAT GAVE YOU A UNIQUE UNDERSTANDING OF HOW ALBANY WORKS, OR SOME MIGHT SAY, DOESN'T WORK.

SO I'M WONDERING, WAS THERE ANYTHING IN PARTICULAR THAT STOOD OUT TO YOU ONCE YOU BECAME GOVERNOR THAT MADE YOU GO, WAIT, WHAT?

ABSOLUTELY.

WITHIN THREE DAYS OF THE TIME I BECAME GOVERNOR, THE BUDGET DIRECTOR COMES IN TO TELL ME THAT GOVERNOR SPITZER HAD A BUDGET THAT WE WERE ABOUT TO PASS THAT HAD A 5.3% INCREASE IN SPENDING WHILE ALL OF THE ECONOMIC CONDITIONS, THE HOUSING MARKET WAS FALLING, THE STOCK MARKET WAS NOT FALLING YET BUT IT CERTAINLY WAS TURBULENT.

AND OF COURSE EVENTUALLY LATER THAT YEAR WE HAD THE BEGINNING OF THE FISCAL CRISIS IN 2008.

APPARENTLY GOVERNOR SPITZER'S RELATIONSHIP WITH THE LEGISLATURE WAS SO POOR THAT HE BASICALLY HAD TO GIVE THEM A BUDGET THAT THEY COULD PASS, BECAUSE THEY HAD HAD ABOUT ENOUGH OF HIM AT THAT POINT.

IN FACT WHEN HE TRIED TO GET THE TWO LEADERS OF THE LEGISLATURE TO BLOCK AN IMPEACHMENT PROCEEDING AGAINST HIM, THEY TOLD HIM YOU CAN HAVE A WEEK, AND THEY BASICALLY TOLD HIM YOU DON'T HAVE A VOTE IN THE HOUSE.

SO I WAS REALLY SURPRISED TO HEAR THIS, BECAUSE THIS WAS NOT KNOWN, THIS WAS JUST SOMETHING THAT THE GOVERNOR WAS DOING.

THE LEADERS WEREN'T GOING TO PUBLICIZE IT BECAUSE THEY WERE GOING TO BENEFIT FROM THE SPENDING THAT COULD OCCUR.

SO I WAS IMMEDIATELY PUT IN A SITUATION WHERE I WAS REVERSING WHAT THE GOVERNOR HAD PROMISED THE LEADERS AND THE LEGISLATORS.

BUT THE REASON I WAS DOING IT WAS THAT WE HAD A BUDGET DEFICIT WHICH STARTED OUT AT 5 BILLION, WHICH I ESTIMATED THE DAY I CAME INTO OFFICE AT 10 BILLION, WOUND UP BEING $21.3 BILLION.

AND WE HAD TO CLOSE THAT GAP OR THE STATE WOULD GO INTO DEFAULT.

SO YEAH, THERE WERE SOME SURPRISES.

WOW.

SO OF COURSE THERE IS NO GENUINE STORY, I WOULD SAY, ABOUT ALBANY, UNLESS IT INVOLVED A GOOD FEUD OR TWO.

AND SO WITH THAT, DO I WANT TO CIRCLE BACK TO THE POINT YOU WERE MAKING A MOMENT AGO ABOUT PEOPLE WHO YOU AT LEAST WERE TRYING TO WORK WITH.

YOU HAD A REALLY CONTENTIOUS RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR, RICHARD RAVITCH.

IT WASN'T CONTENTIOUS AS MUCH AS WE CLOSED THE BUDGET, THE DEFICIT OF $21.3 BILLION IN 2009 -- IN '08.

THEN WE CLOSED ANOTHER DEFICIT OF $10.2 BILLION IN 2009.

NOW WE'RE COMING TO THE LAST $10.2 BILLION BUDGET IN 2010 AND WE ESTIMATE THERE'S GOING TO BE 8 TO $10 BILLION MORE OF DEFICIT THAT THE NEW GOVERNOR, THAT WE WERE HOPING WOULD BE ANDREW CUOMO, COULD FINISH THAT OFF IN 2 2011 AND THEN HE WOULD BE ABLE TO MANAGE WITHOUT ANY MORE OF A FISCAL CRISIS, AND THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED.

MEANWHILE, MR. RAVITCH GOES AND OFFERS THIS IDEA, WHICH HE CALLED THE RAVITCH PLAN, OF $6 BILLION, WHICH WAS HOW WE GOT IN TROUBLE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

GOVERNOR PATAKI CAME IN WITH THE STATE IN DEBT AT $24 BILLION AND HE DROVE IT UP OVER $50 BILLION BY BORROWING.

SO NOW RAVITCH WANTS TO PUT ANOTHER $6 BILLION ON TOP OF THAT AND THEN PAY IT BACK OVER A PERIOD OF TIME, WHEN WE DON'T EVEN KNOW THAT THE FINANCIAL CRISIS WAS GOING TO END ANYTIME SOON.

AND HE GOT ANGRY AND WROTE ALL THESE ARTICLES AFTER HE GOT OUT OF OFFICE SAYING WE DIDN'T LISTEN TO HIM.

WE DID LISTEN TO HIM, BUT WE DIDN'T AGREE WITH HIM.

BUT WHEN WE DIDN'T AGREE WITH HIM, HE TOLD ANOTHER STAFF MEMBER, HE WORKED FOR ME BUT DIDN'T WORK WITH ME, SO HE DIDN'T UNDERSTAND HIS ROLE FROM THE BEGINNING IN THE FIRST PLACE.

OKAY.

PUTTING A PIN IN THAT STORY, WHAT I ALSO THOUGHT WAS REALLY INTERESTING WAS THAT IN THE PROCESS OF YOU DEALING WITH OR WORKING WITH LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR RAVITCH AT THE TIME, YOU GOT SOME WARNINGS OR AT LEAST SOME ADVICE FROM A PARTICULAR NEW YORK CITY DEVELOPER WHO THE REST OF THE COUNTRY HAS GOTTEN TO KNOW VERY, VERY WELL.

A MAN NAMED DONALD TRUMP WAS THE ONLY PERSON WHO OBJECTED TO MY APPOINTING MR. RAVITCH.

I WASN'T LOOKING FOR A POLITICAL FIGURE, AND I KNEW THAT THERE WOULD BE A PRETTY STRONG COURT CASE TO TRY TO BLOCK ME FROM APPOINTING A LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR.

SO WHEN YOU GET A LETTER FROM DONALD TRUMP, JENNA, REMEMBER THIS, AND ALL OF THE VIEWERS SHOULD LISTEN.

WHEN YOU GET A LETTER FROM NOW-PRESIDENT TRUMP, YOU DON'T GET IT IN YOUR MAILBOX.

HE READS IT ON TV.

THAT'S HOW YOU FIND OUT ABOUT THE LETTER.

HE SAID, GOVERNOR, YOU'VE BEEN IN OFFICE A YEAR AND A HALF, YOU'VE BEEN DOING A GREAT JOB, WHY WOULD YOU HIRE THIS GUY?

HE'S NOT QUALIFIED, HE'S TERRIBLE WHEN HE WORKED WHEN HE WORKED WITH THE MTA, THIS WHOLE LITANY JUST LIKE THE ONES HE SAYS NOW WHEN HE DOESN'T LIKE PEOPLE.

BUT I HAD TO ASK THE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR TO COME IN AND EXPLAIN THIS TO ME.

I SAID, IT'S NOT CHANGING ANYTHING I'M GOING TO DO BUT I JUST WANT TO KNOW.

HE INFORMED ME THAT WHEN THE HOTEL AT 42nd STREET AND LEXINGTON AVENUE, THE HYATT, WAS BEING BUILT, THAT IT ADJOINED ONE OF THE TRUMP BUILDINGS, AND DONALD TRUMP CALLED RAVITCH AND ASKED THAT THE MTA WOULD BUILD A SIDE ENTRANCE FOR THEIR EMPLOYEES.

RAVITCH COMPLIED AND TOLD HIM HE WOULD SEND HIM ALL THE INFORMATION AND SEND HIM THE BILL FOR THE CONSTRUCTION.

TRUMP SAID, I DO SO MUCH FOR THE CITY, YOU ALL SHOULD DO THIS FOR ME FOR FREE.

THIS WOULD ACTUALLY BE A CRIME, TO DO THIS.

OBVIOUSLY RAVITCH WASN'T GOING TO DO IT.

BUT 31 YEARS LATER, WHEN RAVITCH BECOMES LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR, MR.

TRUMP HASN'T FORGOTTEN IT.

AND HE TELLS ME THIS.

I IGNORE HIM.

BUT SIX MONTHS LATER, RAVITCH IS COMING OUT OF A BUILDING AND THE MEDIA ASKS HIM WHAT HE THINKS OF MY BUDGET, HE SAYS THE BUDGET IS PRETTY GOOD BUT I DON'T THINK THE LEGISLATURE WILL PASS IT.

NOW YOU HAVE HEADLINES, LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR CONTRADICTS GOVERNOR AND IT'S ALL CONTROVERSIAL.

I'M SITTING IN MY OFFICE, SHAKING MY HEAD.

I GET A CALL AND THEY SAID TONI DONALD TRUMP'S ON THE LINE.

I NEVER MADE THE CONNECTION, JENNA.

OH, MY GOODNESS.

HE SAYS, DAVID, THIS GUY IS AN IDIOT, HE'S DISLOYAL AND UNTRUSTWORTHY, I WARNED YOU ABOUT HIM, YOU SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO ME.

I SAID, DONALD, TODAY I AM HAVING A ROUGH DAY, I DON'T HAVE THE STRENGTH TO ARGUE WITH YOU, BUT THANKS SO MUCH FOR CALLING.

WE GOT OFF THE PHONE AND ABOUT 1 15 MINUTES LATER, I HAD TWO DOORS THAT OPENED UP INTO MY OFFICE AS GOVERNOR, THEY BOTH FLEW OPEN SIMULTANEOUSLY AND ABOUT SIX STAFF MEMBERS COME IN AND SAY, WHY DID YOU TELL DONALD TRUMP AND THE ASSOCIATED PRESS THAT YOU WISH YOU DIDN'T TAKE RAVITCH IN THE FIRST PLACE?

I SAID, I NEVER SAID THAT.

OF COURSE I CALLED DONALD BACK AND SAID, DONALD, YOU AND I BOTH KNOW I DIDN'T SAY THAT.

HE SAID TO ME, BUT IT'S THE TRUTH, IT'S THE TRUTH, YOU KNOW IN YOUR HEART YOU WISH YOU DIDN'T TAKE THAT GUY, LOOK ME IN THE EYE AND TELL ME THAT YOU REALLY WANTED TO TAKE THAT GUY, NOW KNOWING WHO HE IS.

AND I SAID, DONALD, I CAN'T LOOK YOU IN THE EYE, WE'RE ON THE TELEPHONE, AND SECONDLY, I'M GOING TO EXTEND YOU THE COURTESY THAT YOU NEVER EXTENDED TO ME, I'M ISSUING A PRESS STATEMENT TELLING THE TRUTH WHICH IS THAT I NEVER SAID THAT.

AND HE SAYS, OH, COME ON, DAVID, YOU DON'T WANT TO TAKE ME ON ON AN ISSUE LIKE THIS, YOU'RE LOOKING GREAT OUT HERE, PEOPLE HATE THIS GUY.

IT WAS VINTAGE TRUMP THAT WE'VE WATCHED AS PRESIDENT FOR THE LAST FOUR YEARS, BUT I GOT A GLIMPSE OF IT 12 YEARS BEFORE.

WELL, UNFORTUNATELY WE'RE GOING TO LEAVE IT THERE.

ALL I CAN SAY, GOVERNOR PATERSON, IS YOUR BOOK IS FILLED WITH STORIES LIKE THIS, THAT SEEM LIKE THEY WOULD BE PRO FORMA ON THE SURFACE BUT JUST WOW, I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO SAY BUT WOW.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US.

AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, THANK YOU FOR THIS BOOK.

I THINK IT MAKES A LOT OF POLITICAL FIGURES FEEL MORE HUMAN.

JENNA, I TRIED TO WRITE IT THAT WAY.

PEOPLE WRITE 500 PAGES ABOUT HOW GREAT THEY WERE.

I TRIED TO ADDRESS MY OWN MISTAKES AND AT TIMES, UNFORTUNATELY, THE MISTAKES OF OTHERS.

AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR THIS BOOK, BECAUSE IT IS REALLY GREAT.

THANK YOU FOR JOINING US.

THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME.

ABSOLUTELY.
