IT'S A LITTLE UNUSUAL BUT SOMETHING WE'RE ALL STARTING TO ADJUST TO, SO SPEAKING OF THESE BIG ADJUSTMENTS WE'RE MAKING, A HUGE ONE HAS JUST BEEN DETERMINED AND THAT IS THE CLOSING OF THE NEW YORK CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

THERE HAS BEEN SO MUCH DEBATE ON THIS BEING A GOOD IDEA AND A BAD IDEA, AND I WANTED TO GET YOUR TAKE SPECIFICALLY DEALING WITH THE PSYCHOLOGY ISSUES FOR A CHILD.

WELL, OBVIOUSLY, PSYCHOLOGICALLY SPEAKING IDEALLY CHILDREN STAY IN SCHOOL.

IT PROVIDES STRUCTURE, LEARNING, IT PROVIDES SOCIAL INTERACTION AND SOCIAL LEARNING.

OBVIOUSLY IDEALLY, PSYCHOLOGICALLY, YOU WANT YOUR CHILD IN SCHOOL.

BUT THE REALITY IS, I THINK THAT IT'S BECOMING APPARENT BASED ON THE MEDICAL EXPERTS WHO ARE REALLY AT THE FOREFRONT OF THIS, WHERE WE DON'T HAVE A CHOICE, THAT IT SIMPLY, IT ISN'T SAFE, QUITE FRANKLY, TO CONGREGATE IN CROWDS AND BASICALLY IF YOU'RE SITTING IN A CLASSROOM, THAT'S ESSENTIALLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING, AND SO I THINK UNDERSTANDABLY PEOPLE IN CHARGE OF DOING THE RIGHT THING, EVEN THOUGH IN THE SHORT RUN, PSYCHOLOGICALLY, IT'S DEFINITELY GOING TO BE MORE DIFFICULT, MORE DIFFICULT FOR BOTH ADULTS AND CHILDREN, BUT THE GOAL IS TO MAKE IT THROUGH THIS TIME PERIOD WITH AS MANY PEOPLE NOT GETTING SICK AND AS MANY PEOPLE STAYING ALIVE AS POSSIBLE, AND THIS MAY BE A TIME TO BUILD CERTAIN COPING TOOLS FOR CHILDREN, WITH CHILDREN, FOR ADULTS AS WELL, AND TO DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO IMPLEMENT THOSE AND GET THROUGH WHICH IN THE END OF THE DAY BUILDS RESILIENCE.

OF COURSE.

NOW OF COURSE I DO WANT TO ALSO SPECIFICALLY DRILL DOWN TO THE FACT THAT ONE OF THE ISSUES THAT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SAYING IS THAT OF THE OVER 1 MILLION CHILDREN WHO ARE IN NEW YORK CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS, YOU HAVE SEVERAL HUNDRED THOUSAND KIDS WHO ARE IN, YOU KNOW, FRAGILE HOME LIFE SITUATIONS, WHERE SCHOOL IS WHERE THEY GO FOR BASICS A LOT OF US TAKE FOR GRANTED, BREAKFAST, LUNCH, HEAT, SAFETY.

A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF THESE CHILDREN ARE ALSO HOMELESS.

WHAT KIND OF IMPACT NOT BEING ABLE TO GO TO WHAT WAS A SAFE PLACE FOR THEM, SCHOOL, BEING HOME FOR AT LEAST TWO WEEKS, WHAT KIND OF IMPACT DO YOU SEE THAT HAVING?

WELL, OBVIOUSLY THAT'S STRE CON VERY CONCERNING AND THE REASON THE OFFICIALS HAVE NOT CLOSED THE SCHOOLS UP UNTIL THIS POINT.

I AM HOPING AND MANY PEOPLE HAVE GIVEN THEM FEEDBACK THAT THEY NEED TO INTERVENE ON BEHALF OF THOSE FAMILIES AND THOSE CHILDREN WHO ARE IN THAT SITUATION, THAT THEY NEED TO PROVIDE FOOD SOURCES, THEY NEED TO PROVIDE SAFE PLACES TO BE, AND HOPEFULLY OFFICIALS INTEND TO AND SCHOOLS NEED TO POINT OUT, YOU KNOW, WHO IS IN NEED AND GET FEEDBACK SO THEY UNDERSTAND WHO IS IN NEED, THAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN.

THERE'S NO QUESTION THAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN.

I THINK FOR THAT REASON, THEY HAVEN'T CLOSED THE SCHOOLS, BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, I THINK THAT THEIR HAND IS PUSHED, THAT THEY HAVE TO FIND A WAY TO HELP THOSE CHILDREN AND THOSE FAMILIES SPECIFICALLY IN A MUCH MORE DIRECT WAY AT THE SAME TIME THAT THEY CAN'T HAVE THEM IN THE BUILDING TOGETHER.

OKAY.

NOW WHAT ALSO ABOUT THE CHILDREN SHOULD WE BE KEEPING IN MIND?

BECAUSE THERE'S GOING TO BE A LOT OF PARENTS WHO THIS WHOLE SITUATION HAS GOTTEN EVERYBODY PANICKED AND STRESSED.

I THINK ANYBODY WHO HAS BEEN TO A FWGROCERY STORE IS PAINFULLY AWARE OF THAT.

YES.

GIVEN THE FACT THAT KIDS ARE LOOKING TO ADULTS TO TRY TO FIGURE OUT WHAT EXACTLY IS GOING ON, AND WHY DO MY PARENTS OR MY CAREGIVERS SEEM SO STRESSED AND PANICKED, WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO BEGIN ADDRESSING A GLOBAL PANDEMIC TO CHILDREN PARTICULARLY YOUNG CHILDREN, WHO I'M SURE HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS THAT THEY MIGHT NOT EVEN BE VERBALIZING

ABSOLUTELY.

ANY SORT OF CATASTROPHE OR TRAUMA, YOU KNOW, VERY, VERY GLOBALLY DISTURBING ONGOING IS GOING TO MAKE EVERYBODY ANXIOUS.

THAT IS NORMAL.

IF YOUR CHILD IS SEEMING ANXIOUS AND YOU ARE FEELING ANXIOUS, THAT IS NORMAL.

THAT IS YOUR EVOLUTIONARY BRAIN RESPONDING APPROPRIATELY TO WHAT IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION, AND FEELING WHAT IT'S SUPPOSED TO FEEL.

IF YOUR ANXIETY LEVEL, HOWEVER, GOES QUBEYOND THAT, WHERE YOU DON'T HAVE PROBLEM SOLVING YOU NEED TO DO AND CAN DO AND SHOULD DO, YOU HAVE YOUR PUREL, WASHING YOUR HANDS, DOING YOUR SOCIAL DISTANCING, ET CETERA, AND YOU'RE FEELING LIKE I'M STILL OVERWHELMED BY ANXIETY, AND IT'S IMPEDING MY ABILITY TO FUNCTION DOWN THE DAY, I'M CRYING, I'M HAVING PANIC, I AM HAVING TROUBLE TAKING CARE OF MY CHILD, THEN THAT'S A DIFFERENT STORY, AND FIRST I WANT TO SAY ADULTS NEED TO LOOK TO HAVING SOME COPING TOOLS, BECAUSE IT'S VERY HARD TO HELP YOUR CHILD IF YOU'RE OVERWHELMINGLY ANXIOUS.

EVEN IF YOU SAY TO YOURSELF DON'T BE SCARED, DON'T BE ANXIOUS.

IF YOU ARE RESPONDING IN EVERY OTHER WAY, YOU'RE COMPLETELY OVERWHELMED IT WON'T REALLY WORK.

SO IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE ADULTS FIRST OF ALL AT THIS TIME WHEN SO MANY PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE AT HOME, CREATE A STRUCTURE FOR YOUR HOME, SO EVERYBODY HAS THE TIME THEY USUALLY GET UP, GET UP.

DON'T STAY IN YOUR PAJAMAS ALL DAY, GET DRESSED, WASH.

MAKE A DAILY SCHEDULE, SOME COMBINATION OF WORK F THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE DOING.

I WOULD INJECT EXERCISE INTO YOUR DAY, 30 MINUTES OF AEROBIC EXERCISE WHICH REALLY BRINGS ANXIETY DOWN AND HELPS WITH STRESS AND BOOSTS MOOD.

IF YOU ARE FEELING VERY ANXIOUS, YOU CAN INJECT INTO YOUR SCHEDULE FIVE-MINUTE MORNING, MIDDLE OF THE DAY, AFTERNOON, EITHER DEEP BREATHING, WITH A LITTLE VISUAL IMAGERY OF SOMETHING MORE PLEASANT, MUSCLE RELAXATION, MINDFULNESS, IF THAT'S SOMETHING YOU'RE COMFORTABLE TRYING TO IMPLEMENT, ANYTHING THAT BASICALLY RELAXES YOUR BODY AND THAT HELPS TO RELAX YOUR MIND.

SO YOU WANT TO CREATE A SCHEDULE AND GO TO BED AT A REGULAR TIME.

DON'T DRINK MORE ALCOHOL, WHICH WILL CREATE A WHOLE OTHER SET OF PROBLEMS.

HAVE A HEALTHY DIET, AND REALLY KEEP A REGULAR SLEEP SCHEDULE BECAUSE DECREASING YOUR SLEEP OR GETTING INTERRUPTED SLEEP WILL MAKE YOUR ANXIETY WORSE.

SO DOING THOSE THINGS, AND STOCKING YOUR HOME SO THAT YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE THAT YOU HAVE WHAT YOU NEED.

THEN YOU WANT TO TURN TO YOUR CHILD AND BASICALLY DO THE SAME THING FOR THEM.

YOU WANT THERE TO BE A SCHEDULE.

THEY'RE NOT GOING TO SCHOOL BUT OPERATE LIKE SCHOOL IS AT HOME.

YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE YOUR GET UP TIME, YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE YOUR BREAKFAST.

THEY'RE PROBABLY GOING TO GET ON THE COMPUTER BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT MANY SCHOOLS ARE DOING, APPROPRIATELY SO, SO THERE'S SOME SORT OF ENGAGEMENT, THAT WILL PROVIDE LEARNING ENGAGEMENT BUT ALSO PROVIDE SOCIAL EN ENGA ENGAGEMENT.

I KNOW THERE ARE A LOT OF QUESTIONS ABOUT PLAY DATES, AND OTHER FORMS OF SOCIALIZING, WHICH OF COURSE PARENTS WANT TO DO, BECAUSE FRANKLY OTHERWISE THEIR KIDS ARE DRIVING THEM CRAZY.

YES.

SO IT'S UNDERSTANDABLE AND MANY KIDS ARE SOCIAL AND NORMALLY IT'S A GREAT THING BUT I HAVE TO SAY MY UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT BASICALLY THE RECOMMENDATIONS OUT OF CDC, OUT OF W.H.O. AND SOCIAL DISTANCING WOULD MEAN NO, YOU REALLY AT THIS TIME SHOULD NOT BE HAVING PLAY DATES WITH MEMBERS THAT ARE NOT IN YOUR HOME ESSENTIALLY.

SO WHAT I WOULD RECOMMEND, HOWEVER, IS HAVING AN ONLINE PLAY DATE, SO YOU COULD SET UP FACETIME OR YOU KNOW, SKYPE, AND LET THEM PARALLEL PLAY, HAVE THEIR TOY, LET THEM PLAY GAMES ONLINE, PLAY A BOARD GAME WITH EACH OTHER, IF THEY EACH HAVE IT IN THEIR HOME.

IN OTHER WORDS, YOU HAVE TO GET A LITTLE CREATIVE BUT YOU DEFINITELY CAN DO IT ONLINE AND I THINK THAT'S A GOOD IDEA, BECAUSE FEELING TOO ISOLATED IS REALLY NOT GOOD FOR THE MOOD AND NOT GOOD FOR ANXIETY, SO WHETHER THAT'S HANGING ON THE PHONE WITH A FRIEND, HAVING SOME FACE-TO-FACE ONLINE WITH A FRIEND THOSE THINGS ARE IMPORTANT AND EXERCISE FOR CHILDREN IS JUST AS IMPORTANT IF NOT MORE IMPORTANT THAN IT IS FOR ADULTS.

ALSO, THERE'S QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW ADULTS SHOULD BE MODELING THEIR OWN BEHAVIOR.

OF COURSE, THERE ARE QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW MUCH SOME PEOPLE ARE TAKING THE SOCIAL DISTANCING SERI SERIOUSLY WHILE OTHER PEOPLE MIGHT NOT SEEM TO BE TAKING IT SERIOUSLY AND HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO REACT TO EACH OTHER?

I'VE SEEN DEBATES ONLINE SHAMING PEOPLE FOR NOT ISOLATING IN A WAY WHAT SEEMS TO BE RECOMMENDED WHEN SOMEBODY ISN'T TAKING THAT SERIOUSLY.

LOOK, I THINK THIS IS SUCH A DIFFICULT TIME, TENSIONS ARE GOING TO RUN HIGH AND THE WAY THAT WE ARE UNDERSTANDING WE NEED TO GET THROUGH THIS, IT'S GOING TO TAKE SELF-SACRIFICE.

THAT'S THE HARDEST THING TO IMPLEMENT IN A COUNTRY THAT IS AS INDIVIDUALISTIC AS OURS.

WE ARE CULTURALLY PROBABLY THE MOST INDIVIDUALISTIC CULTURE, AND THAT MEANS WE TEND TO THINK OF OURSELVES FIRST, TO BE HONEST, AND WE FEEL THAT WE HAVE A RIGHT AND SOMEONE SHOULDN'T REALLY TELL US WHAT TO DO.

WE WILL MAKE OUR OWN DECISIONS, AND THAT HAS ITS UPSIDE BUT AT TIMES LIKE THIS WHERE THE PROTECTIONS FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL HAS TO DO WITH COLLECTIVELY OPERATING AS A SOCIETY, AND THINKING OF THE GREATER GOOD OF SOCIETY AND OTHERS WHICH ALSO BENEFITS US, THAT DOESN'T COME AS EASILY AND IT DOESN'T COME AS NATURALLY TO PEOPLE HERE.

AND THAT IS A PROBLEM, BECAUSE THEN YOU'RE ANXIOUS.

IT'S NOT COMING EASILY TO YOU.

IF YOU ARE SELF-SACRIFICING, WHY ISN'T SOMEBODY ELSE, AND IF THEY'RE NOT, YOU DO FEEL LIKE YOU WANT TO SHAME THEM OR GUILT THEM.

BUT IT JUST RAISES THE TENSION, WHICH ISN'T VERY HELPFUL.

I THINK PEOPLE HAVE TO ENCOURAGE OTHERS IN A POSITIVE WAY TO DO ESSENTIALLY THE RIGHT THING, TO UNDERSTAND THAT SOCIETALLY IT'S PRETTY CLEAR IF WE WANT TO FLATTEN THE CURVE AND SAVE AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE THAT WE MUST DO THESE SOCIAL DISTANCING THINGS, WHICH ARE HARD, BUT HOPEFULLY DO YOU IT IN AN ENCOURAGING WAY AS OPPOSED TO -- LET'S PUT IT THIS WAY, AS A PSYCHIATRIST I COULD TELL YOU, POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT ALWAYS WORKS MORE EFFECTIVELY THAN NEGATIVE REINFORCEMENT.

SO THINK OF IT THAT WAY.

YOU WANT TO SAY HEY, YOU STAYED HOME AND MISSED THAT THING, DIDN'T DO THAT, GOOD ON YOU.

THAT'S TERRIFIC.

LIKE I'M REALLY LIKE I'M IMPRESSED, I'M PROUD.

YOU SHOULD DO THAT.

WE SHOULD ENCOURAGE EACH OTHER IN THAT WAY.

SO IT'S A GREAT QUESTION, BECAUSE THE TESTING THAT'S BEEN DONE SO FAR ARE ON SYMPTOMATIC PEOPLE.

IN FACT TODAY THEY PRIORITIZED THE NEW TESTING PUT OUT THIS WEEK TO BE FIRST RESPONDERS, HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS, AND OLDER AND AT-RISK PATIENTS WHO HAVE SYMPTOMS.

A TINY LITTLE BIT OF THE TOP OF THE PYRAMID IN TERMS OF WHAT'S TRULY OUT THERE.

WE'RE NOT GOING TO HAVE MUCH IN THE WAY OF DISEASE SURVEILLANCE.

NOW, THE GOOD NEWS IS SO FAR, THE QUEST LABORATORY TESTS FOR EVERYTHING THAT'S BEEN DONE HAVE BEEN ABOUT 1% POSITIVE, AND THE OTHER 99% HAVE BEEN RESPIRATORY, VIRUS, COLDS OR FLU, SO GOOD NEWS SO FAR.

I THINK THE IN SITU THREAT COMES FROM LOOKING AT ITALY, WHERE IT HAS OVERWHELMED THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM.

WHO GETS A VENTILATOR AND WHO DOESN'T.

WE'VE BEEN TOLD IF YOU'RE OVER 65 OR EVEN 60 AND COME IN SICK, YOU MAY SIMPLY BE TOLD TO GO HOME.

GREAT BRITAIN IS TALKING ABOUT RATIONING.

THE HEAD OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES WAS ON THE CALL TODAY, I THOUGHT HE WAS EXCELLENT SAYING LOOK, WE ARE CONCERNED.

WE'RE VERY CONCERNED ABOUT HAVING ENOUGH RESOURCES, AND WE MAY NOT.

THEY ARE GOING TO PULL OUT ARMY CACHE HOSPITALS, YOU MAY HAVE SEEN IN IRAQ, PULL VENTILATORS OUT OF THE ARMY OF DEFENSE, THE NATIONAL GUARD.

THEY'RE GOING TO BUY NEW RESPIRATORS AND TRY TO GET READY BUT EVERYTHING RIGHT NOW IS TAKING THAT SPIKE THAT WAS COMING AT US, AND FLATTENING, FLATTENING, FLATTENING IT.

A DOCTOR OR A NURSE IN THE FAMILY, SO WE HAVE TO BE COGNIZANT OF KEEPING THOSE WHO ARE KEEPING US GOING, AND REMEMBER, IT'S NOT JUST THE DOCTORS AND NURSES.

THAT INDIVIDUAL BECAUSE OF THE FRONT LINE OF CHECKING YOU OUT AT THE GROCERY STORE, HIS OR HER LINE TO HELP YOU OUT.

THE GAS STATION, THE CONVENIENCE STORE, THE RESTAURANTS AND WHATNOT.

I THINK, LOOK, WE WANT TO KEEP THOSE PEOPLE IN BUSINESS.
