IT WAS A DEMOCRATIC FIGHT NIGHT
IN LAS VEGAS.
>> IN ORDER TO BEAT DONALD
TRUMP, WE'LL NEED LARGEST VOTER
TURNOUT IN THE HISTORY OF THE
UNITED STATES.
>> IF HE GOES AS CANDIDATE,
WE'LL HAVE DONALD TRUMP FOR
ANOTHER FOUR YEARS.
>> AS THE BURN AND
BILLION-DOLLAR BLOOMBERG WENT
HEAD TO HEAD --
>> I WOULD LIKE TO TALK ABOUT
WHO WE'RE GOING AGAINST.
A BILLIONAIRE WHO CALLS WOMEN
FAT BROADS AND HORSE FACED
LESBIANS.
AND NO, I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT
DONALD TRUMP.
>> WE SHOULDN'T TO HAVE CHOOSE
BETWEEN ONE CANDIDATE WHO WANTS
TO BURN THE PARTY DOWN AND
ANOTHER CANDIDATE WHO WANTS TO
BUY THIS PARTY OUT.
>> WE'LL TAKE YOU DEBATE
STAGESIDE.
THEN COLUMNIST AND BEST SELLING

VALUABLE LESSONS HE LEARNED
ABOUT LIFE, LOVE AND OTHER
THINGS FROM HIS WISEST FRIEND,
HIS DOG LUCY.

>>> GOOD EVENING.
WELCOME TO "METROFOCUS."
THE GLOVES ARE OFF.
DEMOCRATS UNLOADED ON MAYOR
MICHAEL BLOOMBERG IN HIS FIRST
DEMOCRATIC DEBATE OF 2020.
THE SHOWDOWN IN VEGAS TAKING
PLACE JUST DAYS BEFORE THE
NEVADA CAUCUSES AND LESS THAN
TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE CRUCIAL
SUPER TUESDAY PRIMARIES PROVE TO
BE A ROUGH WELCOME TO THE DEBATE
STAGE FOR NEW YORK'S FORMER
MAYOR.
BLOOMBERG TOOK HIT AFTER HIT
FROM HIS FELLOW CANDIDATES WHO
CHALLENGED HIM ON EVERYTHING
FROM STOP AND FRISK TO
ALLEGATIONS OF WORK PLACE
HARASSMENT AND HIS DECISION TO
DIP INTO HIS VAST PERSONAL
FORTUNE TO FUND HIS PRESIDENTIAL
CAMPAIGN.
BUT ARGUABLY, THE MOST STINGING
BLOWS WERE LAND BY SENATOR
ELIZABETH WARREN WHO REPEATEDLY
CHALLENGED BLOOMBERG ABOUT
NONDISCLOSURE AGREEMENTS SIGNED
BY WOMEN AT HIS COMPANY.
>> MR. MAYOR, ARE YOU WILLING TO
RELEASE ALL OF THOSE WEAPON FROM
THOSE NONDISCLOSURE AGREEMENTS
SO WE CAN HEAR THEIR SIDE OF THE
STORY?
>> WE HAVE A VERY FEW
NONDISCLOSURE AGREEMENTS.
>> HOW MANY IS THAT?
>> LET ME FINISH.
>> HOW MANY?
>> NONE OF THEM ACCUSED ME OF
DOING ANYTHING OTHER THAN MAYBE
THEY DIDN'T LIKE A JOKE I TOLD.
AND LET ME -- THERE ARE
AGREEMENTS BETWEEN TWO PARTIES
THAT WANTED TO KEEP IT QUIET.
AND THAT'S UP TO THEM.
>> JOINING US NOW TO DISSECT THE
DEBATE, THE FORMER MAYOR'S
PERFORMANCE AND WHERE HE GOES
FROM HERE.
POLITICAL COMMENTATOR AND "NEW
YORK TIMES" BEST SELLING AUTHOR,
ELLIS, WELCOME BACK TO THE SHOW.
>> I LOVE YOUR BOXING ANALOGY.
I THINK WE NEED TO BRING IT TO A
CAGE MATCH.
>> OKAY.
IF THERE WAS EVER A PLACE FOR
THIS TO GO DOWN, VEGAS WAS THE
CITY.
>> PERFECT.
YOU'RE RIGHT.
>> FIRST I WANT TO GET YOUR
WINNERS AND LOSERS.
I FEE LIKE THE LOSER HAS BEEN
DETERMINED.
>> IT WAS A TOUGH NIGHT FOR MIKE
AND SOME OF IT WAS PREORDAINED.
HE'S THE NEW GUY IN THE RACE.
HE'S BEEN SURGING.
UP 17, 19% AND HE IS INDEED THE
THREAT SO YES, THEY'RE GOING TO
GIVE HIM A ROUGH WELCOME.
HE DIDN'T HELP HIS CAUSE.
I THINK THE CLIP YOU JUST PLAYED
WITH SENATOR WARREN WAS MAYBE
THE PRIME EXAMPLE.
HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN PREPARED FOR
A COUPLE OF OBJECTION SLAPS AND
IT DIDN'T COME OFF SO WELL.
>> WHAT WE DID SEE WAS A
CIRCULAR FIRING ROUND.
>> ALTHOUGH DIFFERENT PEOPLE GOT
DIFFERENT LEVELS OF STRAFING.
BERNIE CAME THROUGH AT THIS TIME
BEST, I WOULD SAY.
>> WHO SEEMED TO COME AWAY
VIRTUALLY UNDER SCATHED?
>> HE'S THE FRONT-RUNNER AT THIS
POINT.
SO UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES,
ALL THE FOLKS BELOW HIM SHOULD
BE AIMING AT HIM.
AND INDEED, SEVERAL OF THEM MAY
NOT BE HERE A MONTH FROM NOW AND
THEY ARE REALLY AT THE POINT, IF
THEY'RE GOING TO MAKE THEIR
MARK, THEY HAVE TO DO IT SOON.
BECAUSE BOY, THAT WALL COMING ON
SUPER TUESDAY WILL BE BIG.
BUT ONE OF THE EFFECTS OF THE
PRESENCE OF MAYOR MICHAEL ON
STAGE WAS THAT BERNIE GOT TO
SLIDE A LITTLE BIT.
>> SO WHAT WOULD YOU SAY FROM
THE POINT OF VIEW, AT LEAST OF
THE DIFFERENT CAMPAIGNS, WAS
THAT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN BROUGHT
UP?
OF COURSE WE SAW EVERYBODY GO SO
HARD AT FORMER MAYOR BLOOMBERG.
WHAT WERE SOME OF THE ISSUES
THAT YOU WERE HOPING WOULD HAVE
BEEN BROUGHT UP BUT NEVER GOT
MENTIONED?
>> THEY FALL INTO TWO
CATEGORIES.
ONE IS I WANT TO HEAR THE DIRECT
COMPARISONS FOR HOW I THE
CANDIDATE STAND TO TAKE ON
DONALD TRUMP.
IF YOU TALK TO DEMOCRATS OF ALL
PER SITUATIONS, THE THING THAT
THEY CARE ABOUT MOST IS WHO CAN
BEAT TRUMP.
JUST BRING IT ON.
GIVE ME ONE WHO HAS THE BEST
CHANCE AND I'M FOR THAT PERSON
AND I THINK THAT'S WHAT MOST
DEMOCRATS WILL SAY.
THE SECOND THING IS I THINK IT
WILL BE NICE, IT IS DIFFICULT AT
THIS MOMENT, IN THIS SITUATION.
TO TALK ABOUT SOME OF THOSE
ISSUES THE VOTERS CARE MOST
ABOUT.
WHAT WILL YOU DO ABOUT MY HEALTH
CARE?
HOW WILL YOU SOLVE THE
IMMIGRATION CRISIS?
WHAT WILL YOU DO TO HELP MAKE
SURE THAT THE ADVANTAGES OF OUR
ECONOMY AREN'T ALL STUCK UP AT
THE TOP?
LET ME HEAR MORE ABOUT THAT.
>> WAS THIS A WISE STRATEGY FOR
SO MANY OF THE CANDIDATES TO
SORT OF PERHAPS WORK OUT THEIR
POLITICAL AGGRESSION ON MAYOR
BLOOMBERG, CONSIDERING HE'S NOT
EVEN GOING TO BE ON THE BALLOT
FOR THE CAUCUSES?
>> IT PAINED ME TO HEAR AND
YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.
IN THE LONG RETURN, IT'S NOT THE
BEST STRATEGY FOR DEMS.
ONE IS THAT THEY BLOODIED EACH
OTHER UP.
IT SEEMS LIKELY THAT MANY, MAYBE
ALL THESE CANDIDATES WILL BE
WITH US AT LEAST FOR A WHILE,
DIVIDING THAT NONBERNIE PART OF
VOTE INTO MANY NARROW SLICES AND
THAT'S PROBABLY NOT GOOD FOR THE
DEMS EITHER.
BUT IT IS PROBABLY INEVITABLE
WHEN YOU HAVE SO MANY IN A RACE.
ARE YOU GOING TO AMY OR MAYOR
PETE AND SAY SHOULD YOU DROP OUT
FOR THE GOOD OF THE PARTY.
GOOD LUCK HAVING THAT
CONVERSATION WITH AN AMBITIOUS
POLITICIAN.
>> SPEAKING OF THEM, IT SEEMS
LIKE THEY WERE HAVING THAT
CONVERSATION WITH EACH OTHER
LAST NIGHT.
>> WHEN YOU HAVE THIS MANY
CANDIDATES IN THE RACE, IT
NATURALLY DEVOLVES INTO SEVERAL
MINI RACES.
THE PROGRESSIVE FIGHT BETWEEN
ELIZABETH WARREN AND ARE BERNIE
SANDERS.
THE MODERATE LANE, AT THIS
MOMENT, THE MOST CROWDED AND
MAYOR PETE AND AMY KLOBUCHAR ARE
TWO OF THE ONES WHO I WOULD SAY
ARE AT THE GREATEST PERIL.
THEY BOTH HAD GOOD NIGHTS IN NEW
HAMPSHIRE.
PETE DID IN IOWA AS WELL.
BUT BOY, THERE IS NOT MUCH
EVIDENCE THAT HE'S PREPARED TO
FIGHT ON THE BIG STAGE OF SUPER
TUESDAY.
AND THEN THERE IS BIDEN IN THE
MIX WHO WAS ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD
LAST NOTICE.
>> ACTUALLY, HE WAS.
I WANT TO FOCUS ON PETE AND AMY
FOR A MOMENT.
>> YOU HAVE NOT BEEN IN THE
ARENA DOING THAT WORK.
YOU'VE HELP RISED A BUNCH OF
TALKING POINTS AND A BUNCH OF
THINGS.
I CAN TELL YOU ONE THING, WHAT
THE PEOPLE OF THIS COUNTRY WANT.
THEY WANT A LEADER THAT HAS A
HEART FOR THE IMMIGRANTS OF THAT
COUNTRY AND THAT IS ME.
>> MAYBE LEADING A DIVERSE CITY
THAT WAS FACING RUIN DOESN'T
SOUND LIKE THE ARENA TO YOU.
I'M USED TO SENATORS TELLING
MAYORS THAT SENATORS ARE MORE
IMPORTANT THAN MAYORS.
THIS IS THE ARENA, TOO.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE IN
WASHINGTON TO MATTER.
>> A LOT OF THINGS.
HAD POWS AND BATMAN ANIMATION
COMING UP THROUGH THAT.
ONE OF THE THINGS I WAS SEEING
FROM REACTIONS, FROM PEOPLE
ONLINE, THEY DIDN'T WANT TO SEE
THE DEMOCRATS FIGHTING WITH
KLUTT THIS WAY.
THAT THIS WAS GOOD FOR THE
PRESIDENT.
>> YEAH.
THEY ARE TWO OF THE BETTER
TALKERS IN THE FIELD.
BOTH OF THEM ACTUALLY.
THEY'RE PRETTY GOOD ON STAGE.
THAT BACK AND FORTH WAS AN
EXAMPLE.
I THINK THEY BOTH GOT IN A
COUPLE OF GOOD LICKS THERE.
IN THE LONG RUN THOUGH, IT'S
SOMETHING THAT THE WEAKER
CANDIDATES IN THE FIELD DO.
FEEL LIKE THEY NEED TO DO TO GET
RECOGNIZED IN THIS GRASS, BEFORE
IT'S TOO LATE, GET ME UP IN THAT
TOP CIRCLE OF THE.
>> OF COURSE, THE PRESIDENT WAS
WATCHING.
I DO WANT TO QUOTA TWEET THAT HE
TWEETED OUT SHORTLY AFTER THE
DEBATE.
IT WAS PERHAPS THE WORST IN THE
HISTORY OF DEBATES AND THERE
HAVE BEEN SOME REALLY BAD ONES.
HE WAS STUMBLING, BUMBLING AND
GROCERY INCOMPETENT.
NOT SO EASY TO DO WHAT HE DID.
>> WELL, LIKE MOST THINGS DONALD
TRUMP TWEETS, A LITTLE
OVERSTATED BUT THERE IS A LITTLE
KERNEL THERE.
IT WASN'T A GREAT NIGHT FOR
MAYOR MIKE.
IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHO DONALD
TRUMP IS WORRIED ABOUT, WATCH
WHO HE IS INSULTING THE MOST
VICIOUSLY.
SO FOR A WLI, OF COURSE, IT WAS
JOE BIDEN.
NOW IT'S MIKE.
AND YOU KNOW, I THINK ON THE
TRUMP SIDE OF THE STREET, THEY
WOULD PREFER TO RUN AGAINST
BERNIE SANDERS THAN MIKE
BLOOMBERG.
AND I THINK YOU WILL SEE IN THE
WEEKS TO COME, MORE EFFORTS TO
TRY TO SPRENHANCE THAT REALITY.
>> IS THAT SOMETHING THAT WE
SHOULD EXPECT TO SEE?
DO WE SEE A LOT MORE MIKE
BLOOMBERG COMING BACK FOR THE
NEXT DEBATE IN SOUTH CAROLINA?
>> JENNA.
$60 BILLION COVERS A LOT OF
SINS.
THE THING I'M WRESTLING WITH,
AND I'M GOING BACK AND FORTH ON
THIS.
IT IS HOW MUCH IT MATTERS.
MICHAEL BLOOMBERG IS NOT GOING
TO WIN THE PRESIDENCY BY BEING A
SWIFT DEBATER.
THOSE OF HOUSTON FOLLOWED HIM
THROUGH 12 YEARS OF HIS MAYORTY
AND WALL STREET GUY, WE KNOW
THAT THOUGH HE HAS SHOWN HIMSELF
TO BE A MAN OF AMAZING
ACHIEVEMENTS, HIS PUBLIC
PERFORMANCES, AS AN ORATOR, A
DEBATER, WERE NEVER HIS STRONG
SUIT AND HE PROVED IT LAST
NIGHT.
HE IS NOT GREAT ON A STAGE.
HE HAS TO BE A LOT BETTER.
THIS IS A LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE
THAT CANNOT BE SUSTAINED.
HE HAS TO COME BACK AND DO A
BETTER JOB AT I.
IN THE END, THAT'S NOT WHERE
HE'LL MAKE HIS ASSISTANT.
IT WILL BE A WHOLE DIFFERENT
KIND OF ARGUMENT ABOUT
COMPETENCE AND DISSATISFACTION
WITH THE REST OF THE FIELD.
>> IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY,
THAT'S WHAT WE SAW FROM HIP WHEN
HE FIRST RAN FOR MAYOR.
IT WAS NOT ABOUT INSPIRATION.
YOUR CITY HAS PROBLEM.
I CAN FIX YOUR PROBLEM.
YOUR COUNTRY HAS A PROBLEM.
I CAN FIX YOUR PROBLEM.
>> AND IT IS A REASONABLE
ARGUMENT IN AMERICA.
A LOT OF US FEEL LIKE, HEY, OUR
GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE DOING A
MORE EFFECTIVE JOB FOR US.
AND MIKE BLOOMBERG HAS A RECORD
TO POINT TO, ISSUES THAT HE'S
BEEN ENGAGED IN, BIG THINGS,
SOME OF IT WITH HIS OWN
CHECKBOOK.
HE DIDN'T EFFECTIVELY MAKE CASE
LAST NIGHT.
THERE IS STILL A WAY TO MAKE IT
IN THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF
DOLLARS OF TV ADS ARE PART OF
IT.
HE ALSO NEEDS TO BE IN THE ARENA
AND SAY, YOU CHILDREN CAN BE
SQUABBLING WITH EACH OTHER.
WHEN YOU'RE READY FOR A
GROWN-UP, I'M THE GUY WHO CAN
ACTUALLY SOLVE THIS.
OH, AND BY THE WAY, WITH THE GUY
IN THE WHITE HOUSE HUE ALL WANT
TO BEAT.
>> WHEN IT COMES TO MESSAGING,
DO YOU THINK ANYBODY ELSE MISSED
AN OPPORTUNITY TO CLEARLY
DEFINED THEMSELVES AS TO WHAT IT
IS THE CAMPAIGN ASSISTANCE FOR
AS OPPOSED TO THE OTHER
CANDIDATES?
>> IT IS INTERESTING.
THEY DID NOT TALK ABOUT HOW
THEY'LL GO AGAINST TRUMP.
I WISH ALL OF THEM HAD DONE MORE
OF THAT.
THEY'RE GETTING BETTER AT THIS.
ONE OF THE IRONIES OF POLITICS
IS THAT OFTEN RIGHT BEFORE YOU
HAVE TO DROP OUT, YOU HAVE YOUR
BEST PERFORMANCES AND I HAVE TO
SAY, I THINK THE OTHER FIVE OF
THEM WERE AMONG THE BEST THAT WE
HAVE SEEN.
ELIZABETH WARREN WAS SO MUCH
BETTER.
PETE AND AMY ARE CLAWING AT EACH
OTHER.
THEY ALL SOUNDED PRETTY GOOD.
JOE BIDEN, IF HE HAD BEEN THAT
JOE BIDEN, I DON'T KNOW THAT HE
WOULD HAVE HAD SUCH A POOR
SHOWING IN IOWA AND NEW
HAMPSHIRE.
MAYBE TOO LATE BUT INTERESTING
TO WATCH.
>> IT WAS DEFINITELY INTERESTING
TV.
WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU BACK
TO GIVE US MORE INSIGHT INTO THE
DEBATES.
>> THE FUN GOES ON.
>> IT CERTAINLY DOES.
THANK YOU.
>>> DAVE BARRY SAID HE DECIDED
TO BACK PROFESSIONAL HUMORIST
WHEN HE DISCOVERED THAT QUOTE,
PROFESSIONAL HUMOR WAS A LOT
EASIER THAN WORKING.
WE THINK IT'S SAFE TO SAY IN A
CAREER THAT HAS SPANNED FIVE
DECADES, HE'S BEEN PRETTY
SUCCESSFUL AT THIS NOT SO EASY
PROFESSION.
WITH OVER 30 BOOKS, A PULITZER
PRIZE, AND A SYNDICATED COLUMN,
HE'S BEEN CALLED THE FUNNIEST
MAN IN MANAGER.
NOW THE 71-YEAR-OLD WRITER IS
AIMING HIS SARCASM AND WIT AT
THE TOUGHEST CONUNDRUM OF ALL.
HOW CAN WE AGE GRACEFULLY?
IN HIS ATTEMPT TO DISCOVER THE
ANSWER TO THIS TIMELESS
QUANDARY, HE'S BEEN CONSULTING
HIS WISEST FRIEND, HIS DOG LUCY.
THE SIMPLE JOYS OF AN OLD HAPPY
DOG.
HE JOINS US NOW.
>> WELCOME TO THE PROGRAM.
>> GOOD TO BE HERE.
THANK YOU.
>> SO FIRST OF ALL, YOU DON'T
CARE FOR SELF-HELP BOOKS.
THAT'S MOSTLY BECAUSE YOU DON'T
CARE FOR SELF-HELP AUTHORS OF
WHOM YOU WRITE IN THE BOOK,
QUOTE, A REMARKABLY HIGH
PERCENTAGE OF THE ONES I MET DID
NOT STRIKE ME AS COMPETENT, GOOD
OR EVEN NECESSARILY SANE.
YET, YOU WROTE A SELF-HELP BOOK.
>> YEAH.
I'M NOT KNOWN FOR STEP HELP
BOOKS.
USUALLY WHEN PEOPLE READ MY
BOOKS, THEY SAY THAT DIDN'T HELP
ME AT ALL.
OR I'M ACTUALLY STUPIDER HAVING
READ THIS BOOK.
I LIKE THE STRESS THAT THERE
ISN'T ANYTHING THAT I SAY IN
THIS BOOK THAT EVERYBODY DOESN'T
ALREADY KNOW.
I'M NOT BREAKING NEW GROUND
TELLING YOU AMAZING THINGS.
>> THAT'S THE THING ABOUT LIFE
LEARNING STORIES.
YOU ALREADY KNOW THEM BUT YOU
HAVE TO BE REMINDED.
THIS REALLY WORKS.
>> THE IDEA IS THAT, IT'S NOT
THAT WE DON'T KNOW THINGS.
WE KNOW PLENTY OF THINGS.
AND THINGS IMPORTANT ARE SO
SIMPLE BUT DOGS ALSO KNOW THEY.
THEY KNOW HOW TOLEY THEIR LIVES
IN A WAY THAT MAKES THEM HAPPY
WHICH TURNS OUT TO BE A
WONDERFUL WAY.
AND THEY DON'T CHANGE.
THEY CONTINUE TO DO THOSE THINGS
THAT WORK FOR THEN AND HAVE
WORKED FOR THEM FOR THOUSANDS
AND THOUSANDS OF YEARS.
PEOPLE, WE START OUT KNOWING A
LOT OF THESE THINGS.
WHEN YOU'RE A KID, YOU KNOW HOW
TO HAVE FUN.
YOU KNOW HOW TO BE SPONTANEOUS.
AND THEN GRADUALLY, YOU LOSE
THEM.
YOU BURY THEM UNDER A PILE OF
DAILY MINUTE OOSHA THAT SEEMS
MORE IMPORTANT TOUFLT IT IS MORE
IMPORTANT TO LEAD TO PARTICULAR
TEXT THAN TO NOTICE MY KID WHO
IS RIGHT NEXT TO ME AND IS
ASKING ME A QUESTION.
>> SO YOU'VE NAMED A COUPLE OF
LESSONS.
I WANT TO GO THROUGH THEN ONE BY
ONE.
HOW DID YOU COME TO REALIZE,
THAT LUCY, THE GREATEST DOG EVER
OF COURSE, WAS ABLE TO GIVE YOU
THESE LESSONS?
>> WE BOTH GOT OLD.
AT THE SAME TIME I TURNED 70,
LUCY TURNED 10 SO IN DOG YEARS,
70.
WE'RE DEFINITELY IN THE FOURTH
QUARTER HERE.
AND ON REFLECTION, A LOT OF
THINGS I WASN'T CRAZY ABOUT THAT
I WAS DOING THAT HAD TURNED
INTO, WITHOUT REALIZING IT
BECAUSE IT HAPPENED SO
GRADUALLY.
AND MEANWHILE, LUCY, WHO IS WITH
ME ALL THE TIME, EVERY DAY ALL
DAY, SHE'S A DOG, SHE WASN'T
DOING ANYTHING DIFFERENT.
MAYBE SLEEPING A LITTLE MORE.
BUT OTHER THAN THAT, SHE WAS
EXACTLY THE SAME DOG SHE HAD
ALWAYS BEEN.
SHE WAS LIVING HER LIFE IN A WAY
THAT MADE HER VERY HAPPY,
SEEMINGLY EFFORTLESSLY.
IF SHE CAN DO THAT, MAYBE I CAN
DO THAT.
AT LEAST SOME OF THE THINGS SHE
DOES, ALTHOUGH NOT DRINK FROM
THE TOILET.
I HAVEN'T TRIED THAT YET.
>> SO SHE TAUGHT YOU SEVEN
LESSONS.
THE BOOK HAS EIGHT.
THE EIGHTH YOU LEARNED YOURSELF
WITH A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE IN
YOUR FAMILY.
LET ME SEE HOW MANY OF THE SEVEN
I CAN GET TO.
SO THE FIRST ONE OF THOSE
LESSONS IS MAKE NEW FRIENDS AND
KEEP THE ONES YOU HAVE.
HOW DID LUCY TEACH YOU THAT?
HOW HAVE YOU DONE WITH IT?
>> WELL, LUCY IS A VERY FRIENDLY
DOG.
WHENEVER ANYBODY OR ANY DOG
COMES INTO HER SIGHT, SHE WANTS
TO MEET THAT PERSONAL.
OR DOG SHELF LOVES THAT PERSON
OR DOG VERY MUCH.
ESPECIALLY A DOG IF THEY SMELL
RIGHT.
AND THEY ALL SMELL RIGHT TO EACH
OTHER.
AND SHE'S VERY OUTGOING.
SHE SEES SOMEBODY SHE KNOWS,
SHE'S WILDLY EXCITED.
AND I DON'T DO THAT ANYMORE.
ALL MY REALLY OLD DEAR GOOD
FRIENDS, I DON'T EVEN KNOW IF
THEY'RE ALL STILL ALIVE TO.
FIND OUT, I WOULD HAVE TO CALL
THEM UP.
YOU GET OLDER, YOU GET MORE
ISOLATED.
COULD BUT JUST TROUBLE.
YOU BEGIN TO DISMISS WHAT ARE
THE MOST IMPORTANT RELATIONSHIPS
YOU HAVE IN YOUR LIFE.
AT LEAST I WAS DOING THAT.
SO THAT WAS THE FIRST THING.
TO TRY TO GET BACK IN TOUCH WITH
PEOPLE AND TO TRY TO BE OPEN TO
NEW FRIENDSHIPS WHICH IS HARD TO
DO WHEN YOU GET OLDER.
YOUR STANDARDS, WHO IS ALLOWED
TO BE YOUR FRIEND?
I DON'T NEED FRIENDS!
>> IN THE MIDDLE OF WRITING THE
CHAPTER ON THIS, YOU STOPPED AND
YOU CALLED A FRIEND.
>> YEAH.
I WAS FEELING SO GUILTY.
I WAS THINKING ABOUT, I'LL NAME
HIM.
HIS NAME WAS ROB.
HE WAS MY COLLEGE ROOMMATE.
IT SEEMED LIKE A LONG, LONG
TIME.
I'LL GOING TO CALL ROB RIGHT
NOW.
INSTEAD OF JUST WRITING ABOUT
IT, I'LL DO IT.
WE'VE BEEN TALKING MUCH MORE
SINCE THEN.
>> THE SECOND LESSON IS DON'T
STOP HAVING FUN.
IF YOU STOP, START HAVING FUN
AGAIN OF THE.
>> WHEN YOU GET OLDER, YOU BEGIN
TO THINK CERTAIN THINGS ARE
BENEATH YOU.
YOU'RE TOO OLD FOR THAT FLD
THINGS MIGHT PERCEIVE AS SILLY
OR STUPID, MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T
DO IT BECAUSE YOU'RE NOW OLD.
DOGS OF COURSE, DON'T DO THAT.
LUCY LIKED TO PLAY BALL WHEN SHE
WAS A PUPPY AND SHE LIKES IT
NOW.
IT DOESN'T SEEM STOOP I HAD TO
PICK UP THE SPIT BALL AND RUN
AROUND THE HOUSE AND CHALLENGE
ME.
>> THE THIRD LESSON, I'M
PROBABLY GOING TO SKIP A FEW.
I WANT TO GO TO THE THIRD LESSON
WHICH INVOLVES THE PRACTICE OF
MINDFULNESS WHICH HAS BECOME SO
POPULAR.
YOU WRITE, KRORPGSS NOW FOISTING
IT ON THEIR EMPLOYEES WHICH IS
ALWAYS A BAD SIGN.
SPECIFICALLY THE LESSON IS PAY
ATTENTION TO THE PEOPLE YOU
LOVE.
NOT LATER.
RIGHT NOW.
TALK ABOUT THAT.
>> THIS IS ONE OF THE MORE
IMPORTANT LESSONS THAT DOGS CAN
TEACH US.
THERE IS NO CREATURE MORE
MINDFUL THAN A DOG.
IF YOU'RE IN A ROOM WITH A DOG,
YOUR DOG IS THINKING ABOUT YOU.
IF YOU GET UP, YOUR DOG IS
INSTANTLY READY TO GO.
THE DOG IS FOCUSED ON YOU
BECAUSE IT REALLY, REALLY LOVES
YOU.
IT REALLY, REALLY WANTS TO BE
WITH YOU.
WE START OUT THAT WAY.
WE'RE MORE AWARE OF THE PEOPLE
AROUND US.
AND THEN WE END UP ON OUR
PHONES.
WE'RE HE IN THIS, YOU HAVE SEEN
IT, A COUPLE AT A RESTAURANT.
THEY'RE SITTING AT A TABLE RIGHT
ACROSS FROM EACH OTHER.
WHY ARE THEY IN A RESTAURANT?
STAY HOME AND EAT BEPIZZA IN TH
CLOSET.
DOGS ARE SO, SO GOOD ABOUT THAT.
HAVING A DOG IS A CONSTANT
REMINDER OF THAT.
IF YOU'RE IN A ROOM WITH YOUR
LOVED ONES, AND YOUR WIFE IS
LOOKING AT THE PHONE.
PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN AND LOOK AT
THEIR PHONES.
AT LEAST COULD YOU LOOK AT THE
SAME PHONE.
NO.
LOOK AT THEY WILL.
TALK TO THEM.
IT IS A TOUGH ONE.
YOU REALLY GET REMINDED WHEN YOU
GO TO A FUNERAL.
YOU THINK, I'M NEVER GOING TO
SEE THAT PERSON AGAIN.
I'M NEVER GOING TO HAVE ANOTHER
CONVERSATION WITH THAT PERSON.
THEN YOU WALK OUT AND YOU SAY,
I'M GOING TO MAKE SURE I DON'T
LET THAT HAPPEN AND THEN YOUR
PHONE BEEPS.
WELL, JUST THIS ONE TWEET.
>> SO THE FOURTH LESSON.
BY FAR THE HARDEST FOR ME.
LET GO OF YOUR ANGER UNLESS IT
IS ABOUT SOMETHING REALLY
IMPORTANT, WHICH IT ALMOST NEVER
REALLY IS.
THIS IS HARD FOR YOU AS WELL.
YOU WRITE, YOU'RE PRONE TO
INSTANTANEOUSLY HATE PEOPLE YOU
DON'T KNOW.
THE FIRST EXAMPLE IN THE BOOK,
YOU'RE IN LINE.
YOU'RE AT AN ICE CREAM PLACE
WHERE THEY HAVE LIKE 57 FLAVORS
OF ICE CREAM AND THE LITTLE
TASTING THING.
YOU CAN SAMPLE IT.
WHICH OF ALL THESE FLAVORS DO
YOU WANT?
A MAJOR DECISION, HAVE BEEN.
AND I DON'T MIND IF FLOSS ONE
THERE IF YOU TAKE A FEW SAMPLES.
IF YOU'RE AT THE FRONT OF A LINE
OF 25 PEOPLE WAITING TO BUY ICE
CREAM, IF YOU'RE ONE OF THOSE,
OKAY, I'LL TRY.
THAT LET ME TRY THAT.
MMM.
AND THEN YOUR FRIENDS.
CAN I TRY THE FIRST ONE AGAIN?
I WANT TO SHOOT YOU.
I DON'T OWN A WEAPON.
>> YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO
>> LEGALLY, YEAH.
NO.
THE POINT IS, I WILL BECOME
ENRAGED ABOUT THAT.
THERE ARE MANY THINGS.
AND THEN THE REAL PROBLEM IS, I
KEEP THE RAGE.
I'LL BE SEETHING ABOUT IT FOR A
WHILE AND THAT'S A WASTE OF MY
TIME.
IT WON'T MAKE THOSE PEOPLE DO
ANYTHING DIFFERENT.
AND IT WAS WHAT?
30 SECONDS.
NOT THATTER TO.
LUCY DOES GET ANGRY.
WE HAVE A WINDOW IN OUR OFFICE
THAT LOOKS OUT ON THE DRIVEWAY.
MY WIFE AND I WORK IN AN OFFICE
AND LUCY SITS THERE.
SHE KEEPS AN EYE.
ONCE A WEEK, MEN COME.
YOU WON'T BELIEVE THIS.
THEY TAKE OUR GARBAGE.
WALK BRAZENLY DOWN.
AND LUCY IS LIKE, WHAT?
SHE'S LIKE, CAN YOU, DO YOU
SEE -- ARE YOU GOING TO LET THEM
GET AWAY -- SHE'S FURIOUS!
THEY'RE TAKING OUR GARBAGE.
AS SOON AS THEY GO AROUND THE
CORNER, SHE'S BACK TO SLEEPING.
THE RAGE IS OUT.
SHE DOESN'T THINK ABOUT IT.
SHE DOESN'T WAKE UP AT 3:00 IN
THE MORNING AND SAY I CAN'T
BELIEVE WE LET THEM TAKE
GARBAGE.
SHE'S VERY GOOD AT LETTING IT
PASS.
>> LET ME GET TO THE LESSONS.
THE BOOK GETS SERIOUS.
IT WAS A REALLY TERRIBLE EVENT
YOU AND YOUR FAMILY HAD TO
ENDURE.
QUICK WILL TELL US WHAT IT WAS
AND WHAT THE LESSON WAS.
>> THE EVENT WAS, THE BOOK WAS
DONE.
I THOUGHT IT WAS DOUBLE.
I HAD WRITTEN SEVEN LESSONS.
IT HAD BEEN EDITED.
THE BOOK TOUR HAD BEEN PLANNED.
THIS WAS LAST YEAR.
I WAS GETTING READY TO GO ON A
BOOK TOUR IN AUGUST, AUGUST 18,
TWO DAYS BEFORE MY DAUGHTER
SOPHIE WAS SUPPOSED TO START AT
DUKE.
SHE WAS GOING TO BE A FRESHMAN.
VERY EXCITED ABOUT GOING TO
COLLEGE.
SHE WOKE UP PARALYZED FROM THE
WAIST DOWN.
IT TURNED OUT SHE A CONDITION,
AN AUTOIMMUNE DISORDER.
YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM ATTACKS YOUR
SPINE IT IS AND A SERIOUS
DISORDER.
RARE AND IT SOMETIMES DOESN'T GO
AWAY.
THEY DON'T KNOW.
THEY DON'T PREDICT.
THEY DON'T TIELL YOU.
WE SPENT A HORRIBLE COUPLE OF
WEEKS THERE THINKING OUR
DAUGHTER WOULD NEVER WALK AGAIN.
ALL HER FRIENDS HAD GONE OFF TO
COLLEGE.
AND THERE WERE TUBES ALL THROUGH
HER.
THE TREATMENT IS NOT PLEASANT.
AND LOOKING AT INSTAGRAM OF ALL
HER FRIENDS STARTING COLLEGE,
GOING TO PARTIES, AND WE'RE
THINKING, OUR LIVES ARE OVER
HERE.
SHE GOT BETTER.
SHE RECOVERED.
SHE'S NOW AT DUKE AND HAVING A
WONDERFUL, SHE STARTED LATE BUT
SHE'S DOING GREAT AND HAVING A
WONDERFUL TYPE.
AND WE ARE SO GRATEFUL.
BUT THAT WAS THE LESSON.
IF YOU HAD ASKED ME DURING THE
TIME THAT WE WERE GOING THROUGH
THIS, WHICH WAS THE WORST, IF
YOU'RE A PARENT, THERE IS
ABSOLUTELY NO WORSE FEELING THAN
WATCHING YOUR CHILD SUFFER AND
NOT BEING ABLE TO DO ANYTHING
ABOUT IT.
AND NOT KNOWING THAT IT WILL GET
BETTER.
IF YOU TOLD ME THEN LESSON I
WOULD GET WOULD BE WHAT IT WAS,
I WOULD NOT HAVE BELIEVED YOU.
IT WAS GRATITUDE.
WE'RE VERY GRATEFUL THAT SOPHIE
GOT THROUGH THIS AND IS OKAY.
BUT IN THE PROCESS OF LOSING
THAT, HER HEALTH, WE REALIZED
HOW IMPORTANT THAT WAS.
AND HOW UNIMPORTANT ALL THE
OTHER THINGS IN OUR LIVES WERE.
WHEN WE WERE GOING THROUGH THIS,
WE SAID, WE WOULD GIVE UP
EVERYTHING, ANYTHING, IF WE KNOW
SHE WOULD BE OKAY.
WE DON'T CARE ABOUT ANY OTHER,
WE DON'T CARE ABOUT MONEY OR
ANYTHING ELSE.
WE JUST WANT OUR DAUGHTER TO BE
OKAY.
WHEN YOU GET INFLUENCE AND YOU
REALIZE, MAN, ALL THE STUFF THAT
I THINK IS SO IMPORTANT.
AND IT'S NOT JUST US.
THE WHOLE WORLD.
WE'RE ALL FREAKING OUT TALKING
ABOUT POLITICS.
SERVE ANGRY ALL THE TIME.
THOSE AREN'T THE IMPORTANT
THINGS THAT YOUR LIFE.
IF YOU WAKE UP IN THE MORNING
AND YOU CAN GET UP OUT OF BED
AND YOU'RE REASONABLY HEALTHY
AND SO ARE YOUR LOVED ONES, YOU
HAVE A LOT TO BE THANKFUL FOR.
MOST ANYTHING ELSE.
YOU'VE GOT THAT.
THE REST IS KIND OF MINOR.
THE BIG LESSON I GOT OUT OF
THAT, I STILL FEEL IT.
I AM GRATEFUL FOR EVERYDAY NOW
THAT MY DAUGHTER IS OKAY.
WE'RE OKAY.
I DON'T CARE ABOUT MUCH ELSE.
>> YOU TOLD ME BEFORE WE SAT
DOWN THAT SHE'S WILL THAT 100%.
>> YES.
SHE'S DOING VERY, VERY WELL.
>> HOW IS LUCY?
>> LUCY IS UNCHANGED.
S
THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS ABOUT
DOGS.
THEY'RE VERY CONSISTENT.
>> ALL RIGHT.
IT'S BEEN A PLEASURE TALKING TO
YOU.
>> THANK YOU SO MUCH.
