> THE YEARS LEADING UP TO THE
CIVIL WAR.
THEY COMPROMISE AND THE FREE
STATERS AND KANSAS AND BEYOND
HAD BEGUN RIPPING AT THE VERY
FABRIC OF THE NATION.
AND THEY TL ARE CIRCUMSTANCES
AND THEY COMPARE TO PRECIVIL WAR
AMERICA.
AND ABRAHAM LINCOLN ALL OF THE
POWERS.
AND THE NEW BOOK IS A
FASCINATING AND TIMELY
EXAMINATION OF THE EVENTS THAT
LED TO THE CRISIS AND OF THE MAN
THAT WOULD EMERGE FROM THE
POLITICAL WILDERNESS TO SAVE THE
UNION.
AND PRESIDENT BILL AND HILLARY
CLINTON AND SIDNEY, THANK YOU SO
MUCH FOR JOINING US AGAIN TO
TALK ABOUT YOUR BOOK.
>> THANK YOU.
SO SIDNEY, THE HEART OF THE NEW
VOLUME ROUGHLY COVERS THE FOUR
YEARS BETWEEN THE MOMENT WHEN
LINCOLN RE-ENTERED POLITICAL
LIFE AND IS ELECTED.
AND THE UNITED STATES.
AND BASICALLY, 200 AND THE
CONTEXT WITHIN WHICH LINCOLN WAS
FORCED TO ACT.
AND SUMMARIZE THE KEY EVENTS.
>> THIS IS A STORY OF A GREATEST
CRISIS OF AMERICAN DEMOCRACY.
AND IT'S WHERE WE ARE TODAY.
AND LINCOLN IS IN AN OBSCURE
LAWYER.
HE IS WRITING A OLD HORSES OR
BUCK BOARDS OR RAILROADS FROM
COUNTY YOU COULD COURTHOUSE AND
COUNTY COURTHOUSE IN CENTRAL
ILLINOIS PRESSING CASES AS A
LAWYER.
AND THE PARTIES ARE FALLING
APART AGAINST THE PARTY IS SPLIT
OVER THE EXTENSION OVER THE
EXTENSION OF SLAVERY.
IT'S OVER THE ISSUE.
HE WAS A FORCE OF NATURE AND A
MASS F MASTER DEMAGOGUE HAS
SPONSOR THE THE KANSAS NEBRASKA
ACT.
HE WANTS SOMETHING.
AND THEY CAN CARRY AND THE
DEMOCRATIC PARTY.
AND HE WANTS THAT AND HE
PROPOSES THE KANSAS-NEBRASKA
ACT.
HE OPENS THE TERRITORIES OF THE
GREAT PLAINS TO WHOEVER IS GOING
TO BE SLAVERY FREE.
AND THEY'RE IN IT FOR SLAVERY.
AND THEY COME IN FOR FREEDOM AND
FREE LABOR.
AND THEY KILL EACH OTHER.
AND ARMIES AND OUR OPPOSED TO
EACH OTHER IN THE PLAINS.
AND HE BEGINS TRYING TO FIND HIS
FOOTING.
AND CHARLES SUNNER AND THE FLOOR
OF THE STATE AND THE CROSS
SLAVERY FORCES.
AND THE TOWN OF LAWRENCE.
AND CONGRESSMAN PRESTON BROOKS
IS VIRTUALLY ASSIGNED BY THE
POWERS THAT BE.
AND CONGRESS AND POWER.
AND HE WALKS INTO THE SENATE AND
CAVES.
AND MOST OF THE FLOOR OF THE
SENATE.
SUMNER IS ALMOST KILLED.
HE IS VIRTUALLY REMOVED FROM
POLITICS.
THIS INSPIRES SOMEBODY AT THE
SAME TIME JOHN BROWN.
AND THEY KILL THE SENATORS IN
KANSAS AND WITHIN TEN DAYS OF
THESE EVENTS.
ILLINOIS REPUBLICAN PARTY THE
VEHICLE THAT WITHIN WILL CARRY
HIM TO THE PRESIDENT BALT.
AND YOUR BOOK IS ONE OF THE BEST
POLITICAL BIOGRAPHIES OF STEPHEN
DOUGLAS AS WELL ABRAHAM LINCOLN.
HE HAS A HUGE IMPACT.
NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE AMBITION.
IN 1958, LINCOLN DECIDES TO
CHALLENGE THE SENATE SEAT.
AND THE FAMOUS LINCOLN DOUGLAS
DEBATES.
WHAT EXACTLY WERE THE CONTENDING
POSITIONS?
.
.
>> LIVINGON WAS COMPLETELY
OPPOSED TO THE EXTENSION OF
SLAVERY AND I BELIEVE THAT
SLAVERY WAS AS HE SAID DOZENS OF
TIMES IN MANY SPEECHES IN EACH
SPEECH WRONG, WRONG, WRONG AND
WRONG.
IF SLAVERY IS WRONG, NOTHING IS
WRONG SAID LINCOLN.
THEY BELIEVE THE POLICY OF WHAT
LINCOLN SAID DON'T CARE,
INDIFFERENCE.
DOUGLAS SAID HE DIDN'T CARE
WHETHER THE TERRITORIES WERE
FREE OR SLAVE.
IT WAS UP TO THE SETTLERS.
AND THEY FACED OFF THE FAMOUS
DEBATES.
AND HOUSE DIVIDED SPEECH.
HE SAID THE COUNTRY WILL BECOME.
IT WILL BE ONE THING OR THE
OTHER.
THEY BELIEVE THE PEOPLE WOULD
PUT SLAVERY AS THEY SAID IN THE
COURSE OF ULTIMATE EXTINCTION.
DOUGLAS SAID THAT THE
DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE WAS
MADE ONLY FOR WHITE MEN AND THAT
IT EXCLUDED.
IN STATING ALL MEN ARE CREATED
QUAUG INCLUDED NEGROES AND THAT
THEY HAD NATURAL RIGHTS.
THEY FACED OFF IN SEVEN DEBATES.
AND THE DISTRICTS HAVE BEEN
JE
JERRY MANDERED BY DOUGLAS.
AND LINCOLN LOST EVEN THOUGH HE
WON THE POPULAR VOTE.
I DON'T KNOW IF THAT IS POPULAR
NOW.
ONE OF THE LESSONS FOR US.
LINCOLN ALWAYS WORND AGAINST
THIS UNION.
HE WARNED AGAINST A HOUSE
DIVIDED.
AND HE SAID THAT OF THOSE WHO
WERE SEEKING THIS UNION WERE THE
SOURCE OF TROUBLE.
AND THEY'RE SEEKING AND ALL
EVENTS.
AND AT THE ENDst SPEECH HE SAID
RIGHT MAKES MIKE.
AND HE SAYS THAT ANY ATTEMPT TO
IMPEACH HIM WILL CAUSE A CIVIL
WAR.
AND THE DECISIVE YEAR IN WHICH
THEY MOVE HIM AND HE WAS A
RESPONSIBLE FIGURE.
AND IT IS UNPRECEDENTED
SITUATION.
THE DEMOCRACY FACES A THREAT TO
OUR CONSTITUTION AND OUR VARIED
DEMOCRACY.
LINCOLN ROSE TO THE OCCASION.
HE UNDERSTOOD THE CRISIS.
AND HE WAS PREPARED TO LEAD THE
COUNTRY.
AND FOCUSED AND DETERMINED
PERSON.
AND FOR ALL OF THE ISSUES THAT
WE'RE FACING.
AND HE HAD A DEEP AND PROFOUND.
UNDERSTANDING OF THE
CONSTITUTION AND THE HISTORY OF
THE COUNTRY WAS AND WHERE THE
POLITICS WERE TENDING.
AND IN THE BOOK AFTER LINCOLN
GIVES HIS COOPER UNION SPEECH
THIS IS THE GREATEST THING SINCE
ST. PAUL.
AND HE WAS A GREAT LEADER.
AND THAT MAKES ONE WANT TO BE A
BETTER HUMAN BEING.
I WONDER WHAT EFFECT IT'S HAD ON
YOU SPENDING ALL AND THIS GREAT
AMERICAN.
>> LINCOLN HAS GREAT COMPANY.
I SPENT YEARS WRITING THIS
SERIES OF BOOKS.
AND I CAN'T IMAGINE AND SPEND
TIME WITH.
AND HE HAS A GREAT SENSE OF
HUMOR.
AND HE HAS A DEEPLY INCISIVE
MIND.
HE GREW UP IN THE DEEPEST
POVERTY.
AND UNDERSTANDING OF AND
ISOLATION, SLOWLY STUDYING.
AND HE BECAME AN EXTRAORDINARILY
AND IF THE COOPER UNION SPEECH.
AND NOTABLE IN THE DAY.
AND FROM THE FAR WEST, ILLINOIS,
HE APPEARED IN A RUMBLED SUIT.
HIS HAIR WAS TASSLED.
HE SPOKE IN A THIN FOIS.
VOICE.
THEY'RE LIKE WHO IS THIS PERSON?
THEN THEY WERE STUNNED BY HIS
ARGUMENTS, HIS WORDS, HIS
PHRASES, THE WAY IN WHICH HE
WROTE AND SPOKE.
AND AT THE END, AS YOU SAID, ONE
OF THE JOURNALISTS SAID HE'S THE
GREATEST MAN SINCE ST. PAUL.
HE WAS ALSO A LAWYER WHO FRAMED
EVERY ARGUMENT IN ORDER TO WIN
THE CASE.
HE KNEW WHAT JURIES WERE.
THE HE KNEW WHO ORDINARY PEOPLE
WERE.
HE KNEW THE ARTS OF PERSUASION.
LINCOLN WAS A PRACTICAL
POLITICIAN HIS WHOLE LIFE.
AND TO THE MARROW OF HIS BONE,
BUT HE IS SOMEBODY THAT SAW THAT
IN THE SFERVICE OF THE NATION.
THE COUNTRY HAS EVER FACED WITH
LESSONS FOR US ALL TODAY.
>> THANK YOU FOR TALKING TO US
TODAY.
IT'S A WONDERFUL BOOK.
I HOPE OUR VIEWERS GO OUT AND
BUY IT AND READ IT.
>> THANK YOU, RAFAEL.
