METROFOCUS: OCTOBER 10, 2019

October 11, 2019 at 5:30 am

In a MetroFocus exclusive, Barbara Res, a former confidante and top executive at the Trump Organization, shares her prediction about what the president’s next moves in the impeachment probe might be. Tech startups are working with the MTA to ease New York City’s transit troubles. Tonight, we’ll show you how they’re hoping to help your commute. The film “Free Time” is an ode to New York. Tonight, see how resurrected 16 millimeter footage of Manhattan is a love letter from a filmmaker to the city he loves.

>>> GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO
"METROFOCUS."
I'M JENNA FLANAGAN.
COULD PRESIDENT TRUMP RESIGN
BEFORE DEMOCRATS GET A CHANCE TO
IMPEACH HIM?
CONGRESS IS INVESTIGATING THE
PARKIN
PRESIDENT'S DEALINGS WITH
UKRAINE.
BARBARA RES KNOWS TRUMP BETTER
THAN MOST.
SHE'S A FORMER TOP EXECUTIVE AT
HIS ORGANIZATION.
>> IT WOULD BE VERY, VERY BAD
FOR HIM TO BE IMPEACHED.
I DON'T KNOW THAT HE WOULD BE
FOUND GUILTY BUT I DON'T THINK
HE WANTS TO BE IMPEACHED.
I THINK THAT'S WHAT THIS PANIC
IS ABOUT.
AND MY GUT TELLS ME HE'LL LEAVE
OFFICE, RESIGN, OR MAKE SOME
KIND OF A DEAL, EVEN.
>> FOR MORE ON HER THOUGHTS ON
PRESIDENT TRUMP, I'M JOINED NOW
BY BARBARA RES.
V
RES IS AN ATTORNEY, PUBLIC
SPEAKER, AND THE AUTHOR OF "ALL
ALONE ON THE 68th FLOOR."
BARBARA, WELCOME TO THE PROGRAM.
>> THANK YOU.
>> I WANT YOU TO ELABORATE A
LITTLE MORE ON WHAT YOU TOLD
CNN.
>> THEY PUT ME ON THE SPOT,
WHICH IS FINE, ASKING ME WHAT I
THOUGHT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN WITH
THE WHOLE PROCESS OF
IMPEACHMENT.
I TOLD THEM, I DON'T HAVE A
CRYSTAL BALL OR IN ADDANYTHING
THAT, BUT MY GUT TELLS ME TRUMP
DOESN'T WANT HIS PRESIDENCY TO
REFLECT AN IMPEACHMENT.
I THINK THAT HE WOULD QUIT
BEFORE THAT HAPPENED.
SO THAT'S WHY I SAID HE'LL
PROBABLY RESIGN.
THAT'S MY GUT OPINION BASED ON
THINGS I'VE SEEN HIM DO IN THE
PAST.
>> BEFORE WE GET ON TO YOUR
RELATIONSHIP WITH PRESIDENT
TRUMP, I DO WANT TO GET A LITTLE
BIT OF A PERSPECTIVE, THOUGH,
BECAUSE HE SEEMS LIKE THE TYPE
OF PERSONALITY WHO ENJOYS A GOOD
FIGHT.
HE ENJOYS BEING ABLE TO SPAR
WITH SOMEONE.
AND IT SEEMS LIKE THIS IS THE
TYPE OF THING WHERE IF THE
DEMOCRATS VOTE TO IMPEACH HIM IN
THE HOUSE, THAT THE FIGHT THAT
COULD ENSUE BETWEEN REPUBLICANS
IN THE SENATE AND PERHAPS
DEMOCRATS IN THE SENATE IS
SOMETHING HE WOULD THRIVE ON.
IS THAT A FAIR ASSESSMENT?
>> NORMALLY I WOULD AGREE WITH
YOU.
HE LOVES TO FIGHT, HE LOVES TO
PIT PEOPLE AGAINST EACH OTHER
AND SEE WHO IS THE STRONGER.
BUT IN THIS CASE, HE DOESN'T
HAVE ANY POWER.
AND THAT IS WHAT MAKES IT
DIFFERENT.
AND, YOU KNOW, HE HAD A TASTE OF
THAT WHEN HE WAS -- WHEN HE SHUT
DOWN THE GOVERNMENT AND HAD TO
DEAL WITH NANCY PELOSI.
AND IT WAS REALLY THE FIRST TIME
THAT HE WAS EVER DEALING WITH
SOMEONE THAT HAD EVERY BIT AS
MUCH POWER AS HE HAD.
AND HE DID CAPITULATE IN THAT
CASE.
>> HOW DOES SOMEONE LIKE
PRESIDENT TRUMP, SHOULD HE
CHOOSE TO RESIGN, SELL THIS TO
HIS SUPPORTERS?
BECAUSE A BIG PART OF HIS APPEAL
TO SUPPORTERS IS I'M THE TOUGH
GUY, I'LL FIGHT NO MATTER WHAT,
AND I CAN'T BE DEFEATED BY, SAY,
SNOWFLAKE LIBERALS.
>> WELL, YOU KNOW, WHAT DO HIS
SUPPORTERS DO FOR HIM IF HE
RESIGNS?
DOES HE REALLY NEED TO SELL THEM
ANYTHING?
HE CAN TELL THEM TO GO TO HELL.
HE DOESN'T NEED THEM IF HE
RESIGNS, HE NEEDS HIS FINANCIAL
BACKERS IN TURKEY AND OTHER
COUNTRIES THAT GIVE HIM THE
OPPORTUNITY TO BUILD TRUMP
TOWERS.
SO I DON'T THINK THAT THAT WOULD
BE A BIG DEAL FOR HIM, TO BE
HONEST WITH YOU.
AS FAR AS MAKING IT UP, YOU
KNOW, PUTTING PERSPECTIVE ON IT,
THERE'S MILLION THINGS HE COULD
DO.
TRUTH DOES NOT ENTER INTO THIS.
HE COULD SAY HE'S SAVING THE
COUNTRY BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE
ARGUING TOO MUCH.
HE COULD SAY HE'S SAVING THE
REPUBLICAN PARTY.
NO MATTER WHAT HE DID, IT WOULD
NEVER BE, THIS IS MY FAULT.
IT WOULD BE, THIS IS WHAT I'M
DOING FOR AMERICA.
>> IT'S INTERESTING THAT YOU
MENTION "THIS WAS MY FAULT,"
BECAUSE HE ALSO COMES ACROSS AS
SOMEONE WHO IS NOT FOND OF OR
PERHAPS RARELY EVER APOLOGIZES.
YET YOU, WORKING WITH HIM IS A
COLLEAGUE, WERE ONE OF THE FEW
PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY GOT AN
APOLOGY OUT OF THEN BUSINESSMAN,
NOW PRESIDENT, DONALD TRUMP.
>> THAT HAPPENED.
WE HAD AN ENORMOUS FIGHT, AN
ENORMOUS FIGHT, YELLING AND
SCREAMING AT EACH OTHER, AND
SAYING THINGS THAT WERE WAY OUT
OF LINE.
AND THE NEXT DAY, I WENT HOME, I
GOT THROUGH A LITTLE BIT OF -- I
BLEW OUT TWO TIRES ON THE WAY
HOME, I WAS SO UPSET.
THE NEXT DAY I WENT INTO HIS
OFFICE AND I SAID, DONALD, I'M
SORRY, I WAS OUT OF LINE.
AND HE SAID, I WAS OUT OF LINE
TOO.
THAT'S THE CLOSEST I'VE EVER
HEARD HIM COME TO AN APOLOGY.
>> TELL ME A LITTLE BIT MORE
ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP, AT LEAST
THE PROFESSIONAL WORKING
RELATIONSHIP YOU HAD WITH HIM.
WAS HE AS ADVERSARIAL AS WE SEE
HIM NOW?
WAS HE A DIFFERENT PERSON,
PERHAPS, WHEN YOU CAME TO KNOW
HIM?
>> YOU KNOW, HE WAS A DIFFERENT
PERSON.
BUT THE ELEMENTS WERE THERE.
HE CERTAINLY WAS VERY
ADVERSARIAL.
WE HAD AN INCREDIBLE
RELATIONSHIP, WE WERE VERY
CLOSE.
HE WAS LIKE A BIG BROTHER IN A
SENSE TO ME.
AND WE LEARNED FROM EACH OTHER,
BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, I HAD MY
SPECIALTY, HE HAD HIS.
SO IN TIME I LEFT TRUMP TOWER
AND CAME BACK AND WORKED AGAIN
AND WORKED ON DEVELOPMENT
PROJECTS PRIMARILY, NOT SO MUCH
CONSTRUCTION.
AND I DID SEE A CHANGE IN HIM.
AND THE CHANGE HAD TO DO, I
THINK, WITH THE FACT THAT HE
BECAME SOMEWHAT FAMOUS.
WE USED TO WALK TO MEETINGS IN
THE CITY.
NOW HE HAS A BODYGUARD, WHEREVER
HE GOES, HE DRIVES EVERYWHERE,
HE DOESN'T WALK ANYWHERE.
I MEAN AT THE TIME I WENT BACK,
NOT NOW.
SO I SAW THOSE DIFFERENCES.
I SAW A BUNCH OF PEOPLE WORKING
FOR HIM, THEY WERE HIGH QUALITY,
BUT THEY WERE VERY MUCH -- I
DON'T WANT TO SAY THE WORD YES
MEN, BUT SYCOPHANTS, MAYBE,
WHICH WAS UNUSUAL FOR HIM.
HE USED TO HAVE PEOPLE WHO STOOD
UP TO HIM MORE.
THE NEW PEOPLE WERE NOT LIKE
THAT.
>> IT'S INTERESTING THAT YOU USE
THE PHRASE "I DON'T WANT TO SAY
YES MEN BUT PERHAPS SYCOPHANTS."
THAT SEEMS TO BE A RHETORICAL
THING WE'LL SEE FROM THE
PRESIDENT, "I'M NOT GOING TO SAY
X BUT SOMEONE ELSE SAID X."
WE SAW A RECENT ARTICLE FROM
GEORGE CONWAY, OF COURSE THE
HUSBAND OF KELLYANNE CONWAY, AND
HE'S FLAT OUT SAID THAT THE
PRESIDENT IS IN MENTAL DECLINE.
I'M WONDERING IF YOU'VE SEEN ANY
CHANGE THAT MIGHT INDICATE
SOMETHING LIKE THAT OR IF --
WHAT ARE THE CHANGES THAT YOU
HAVE SEEN SINCE THE LAST TIME
YOU INTERACTED WITH HIM
PERSONALLY VERSUS THE PRESIDENT
WHO WE NOW SEE ON TELEVISION?
>> FOR ONE THING, I DON'T KNOW
THAT HE'S -- I'M NO
PSYCHIATRIST, NEITHER IS GEORGE.
HE SAYS HE'S A NARCISSIST, WE
KNEW THAT, HE WAS LIKE THAT
YEARS AGO, HE WAS VOLATILE, HE
WAS NASTY AND UNFAIR.
BUT, YOU KNOW, NOW THOSE THINGS
HAVE TAKEN HIM OVER.
THE BIGGEST CHANGE, TO MY MIND,
THATTIC S I CAN SEE, AND I'M SO
INTERPRETING THIS A LITTLE BIT,
HE DOESN'T LISTEN TO ANYONE.
AND HE DID, YEARS AGO, HE HAD
ADVISERS.
NOW IT'S HIM TELLING THEM WHAT
TO DO AND THEM JUMPING HOW HIGH.
THAT'S HOW I SEE IT.
>> HOW DO YOU SEE, PERHAPS,
MINOR DEPENDING ON OF COURSE
WHAT THE HOUSE CHOOSES TO DO
WITH THIS IMPEACHMENT INQUIRY,
BUT HOW DO YOU SEE THE TRUMP
PRESIDENCY GOING FORWARD, OR
PERHAPS HOW DO YOU SEE THE TRUMP
ORGANIZATION GOING FORWARD
POST-PRESIDENCY?
>> WELL, YOU KNOW PART OF IT
WOULD DEPEND ON HOW HE LEFT THE
PRESIDENCY.
IF HE QUIT, IF HE WAS IMPEACHED
AND CONVICTED, OR IF HE JUST
LOST IN THE NEXT ELECTION.
THOSE ARE THREE DIFFERENT
THINGS.
THE TRUMP ORGANIZATION I DON'T
THINK EVER STOPPED, BUT IT'S
QUESTIONABLE AS TO WHAT EXACTLY
THE TRUMP ORGANIZATION IS AND
WHETHER OR NOT IT'S NEARLY AS
SUCCESSFUL AS DONALD SAYS IT IS.
BUT I SEE THAT GOING FORWARD.
AND I SEE, YOU KNOW, BARRING HIM
HAVING A HORRIBLE SCANDAL THAT
WOULD TOTALLY MAR HIM, I THINK
HE CONTINUES TO BUILD IN OTHER
COUNTRIES AND YOU'LL SEE TRUMP
TOWERS GOING UP IN MOSCOW.
>> WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE
WHO SAYS YOU'RE JUST A
DEMOCRATIC OPERATIVE, IF YOU
WILL, YOU WERE A HILLARY
SUPPORTER, YOU WERE AGAINST THE
PRESIDENT SO OF COURSE
EVERYTHING YOU SAY SHOULD BE
QUESTIONED AND VIEWED WITH A
LEVEL OF SUSPICION?
>> WHAT CAN I SAY?
PEOPLE HAVE -- ANYONE THAT'S
WATCHED ME, SEEN ME, READ MY
BOOK, KNOWS THAT I AM 100%
CONSISTENT.
I HAVE NOT VEERED OFF MY MESSAGE
SINCE WHEN I WAS OPPOSED TO HIS
PRESIDENCY.
I'VE GOTTEN A LITTLE HARDER ON
HIM.
I WAS VERY SOFT ON HIM, AND THE
MORE I THINK ABOUT HIM AND THE
MORE I SEE WHAT HE'S DOING, I'M
A LITTLE BIT NOT SOFT PEDALING
LIKE I MIGHT HAVE BEEN IN THE
BEGINNING.
>> THERE'S BEEN SOME ALREADY
TALK THAT PERHAPS EVEN IF AN
IMPEACHMENT DOES HAPPEN,
PRESIDENT TRUMP WILL NOT LEAVE
THE WHITE HOUSE, THAT HE WILL
FIGHT, HE LITERALLY WILL HAVE TO
BE REMOVED.
DO YOU SEE THAT AS A FAIR
ASSESSMENT OR IS THAT GOING TOO
FAR?
>> I HEARD THAT AND LAUGHED.
I DON'T SEE IT AS A FAIR
ASSESSMENT.
WHAT'S HE GOING TO DO, SIT IN A
CHAIR AND HAVE SOMEBODY PICK HIM
UP?
HE'LL FIGURATIVELY BE YELLING
AND SCREAM PARTICULARLY IF HE
GETS DEFEATED, BUT HE WILL HAVE
TO LEAVE.
HE'S NOT GOING TO CAUSE A MAJOR
EVENT LIKE THAT, A COUP,
WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT.
ALL OF THIS IS BRAVADO, THIS IS
COMING OUT OF HIS MOUTH AND IT'S
THE FIRST TIME THAT COMES INTO
HIS HEAD AND HE AMPLIFIES IT AND
MAKES IT STRONGER AND STRONGER.
BUT NO, IS HE GOING TO REFUSE TO
GIVE UP THE PRESIDENCY IF HE
LOSES?
I DON'T THINK SO.
>> THEN OF COURSE THE
PRESIDENT'S TWITTER FEED WHICH
WE HAVE COME TO RELY ON HIS AS
ACTUALLY MOUTHPIECE.
DO YOU SEE THE TWEETS STOPPING?
DO YOU SEE THEM CONTINUING?
DO YOU SEE THEM RAMPING UP IN
PERHAPS THEIR RHETORIC AND
NATURE?
>> I THINK THAT -- WELL, MOSTLY
WHAT HE DOES IS RHETORIC.
BUT I THINK THAT, YOU KNOW,
THAT'S HIS WAY OF COMMUNICATING.
THAT'S HIS WAY OF IT COMING IN
HERE AND COMING OUT THERE
WITHOUT ANYBODY SAYING, WELL,
DONALD, MAYBE THAT'S A LITTLE
RASH.
THIS UKRAINE THING, THERE WAS NO
INFORMATION OR ADVICE ON ANY OF
THAT.
RIGHT TO THE END, WHATEVER HE'S
DOING AT THAT MOMENT, HE'LL BE
TWEETING ABOUT IT, IN MY MIND.
>> OF COURSE.
FINAL QUESTION, IF THERE WAS A
PIECE OF ADVICE THAT YOU COULD
GIVE THE PRESIDENT RIGHT NOW,
WHAT WOULD IT BE?
>> FIRST OF ALL, I WOULD TELL
HIM TO SHUT UP.
I WOULD ALSO TELL HIM TO LOSE
GIULIANI BECAUSE I DON'T THINK
HE'S DOING HIM ANY GOOD.
I DO THINK AT THIS POINT IN TIME
THE PRESIDENT SHOULD PROBABLY
RESIGN.
>> BARBARA, THANK YOU SO MUCH
FOR GIVING US YOUR UNIQUE
INSIDER PERSPECTIVE INTO
PRESIDENT TRUMP, THE MAN WHO WE
AS NEW YORKERS THOUGHT WE KNEW
BUT THE COUNTRY IS GETTING TO
KNOW AS PRESIDENT.
THANK YOU SO MUCH.
>> MY PLEASURE.
>>> A GROUP OF TECH STARTUPS IS
WORKING WITH THE MTA TO FIX NEW
YORK CITY'S TRANSIT TROUBLES.
THE FIRST EVER TRANSIT TECH LAB
IS TAKING ON SUBWAY AND BUS
CHALLENGES TO MAKE YOUR COMMUTE
LESS CHAOTIC.
HERE IS THE STORY.
>> THIS IS A WIN/WIN FOR THE MTA
BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, AIT'S A
WIN/WIN FOR OUR CUSTOMERS.
>> Reporter: THE MTA IS TAPPING
NEW RESOURCES TO ADDRESS OLD
PROBLEMS.
THE FIRST EVER TRANSIT TECH LAB
IS ASKING TECH STARTUPS TO HELP
SOLVE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
CHALLENGES.
IN LATE 2018, NEARLY 100
STARTUPS APPLIED FOR AN
OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN
THE INNOVATIVE NEW PROGRAM.
SELECTED COMPANIES WOULD GAIN
ACCESS TO MTA EXPERTISE AND THE
POSSIBILITY OF TESTING THEIR
PRODUCT WITH ONE OF THE LARGEST
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION AGENCIES
IN THE WORLD, AND THE MTA WOULD
GET SERVICES FREE OF CHARGE.
SIX STARTUPS WERE SELECTED BACK
IN FEBRUARY 2019.
AND ON THIS DAY, THE FOUR
COMPANIES MOVING ON TO THE
YEAR-LONG PILOT PHASE OF THE
PROGRAM WERE ANNOUNCED.
MTA CHAIRMAN AND CEO PATRICK
FOY.
>> I THINK THE MTA HAS GOTTEN 10
TO $20 MILLION OF VALUE HERE IN
THIS PROCESS AND IN THE PILOT TO
COME AT NO COST TO THE MTA.
>> Reporter: THE TRANSIT TECH
LAB'S PROGRAM DIRECTOR SAYS THE
STANDARD PUBLIC PROCUREMENT
PROCESS USED BY THE MTA TO
SELECT VENDORS IS A LENGTHY ONE.
IT CENTERS AROUND A REQUEST FOR
A SPECIFIC PIECE OF TECHNOLOGY
RATHER THAN A BLANKET REQUEST
FOR NEW IDEAS.
SHE SAYS THE PROCESS TOOK LESS
THAN SIX MONTHS FROM COMPANY
SELECTION TO THE COMPLETION OF
THE ACCELERATOR PROCESS.
>> WE LOOKING AT GROWTH STAGE
TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES BECAUSE
BIG, ESTABLISHED COMPANIES
ALREADY ARE ABLE TO WORK WITH
AND APPLY TO PUBLIC PROCUREMENT
PROCESSES.
WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE NEW
COMPANIES HAD A ROUTE AND A
PROCESS TO DO THE SAME.
>> Reporter: THE TRANSIT TECH
LAB ZEROED IN ON A SUBWAY
CHALLENGE AND A BUS CHALLENGE.
>> THE SUBWAY CHALLENGE IS HOW
DO WE BETTER PREDICT SUBWAY
DELAYS AND COMMUNICATE THOSE
DELAYS TO CUSTOMERS.
THE BUS CHALLENGE IS HOW DO WE
MAKE BUSES FASTER AND MORE
EFFICIENT ACROSS THE CITY.
THOSE CHALLENGES WERE SELECTED
BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, THOSE WERE
TOP PRIORITIES FOR NEW YORK CITY
TRANSIT AND WE THOUGHT THOSE
WERE AREAS WHERE WE COULD FIND
INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES
TO ADDRESS THE CHALLENGES.
>> Reporter: COMPANY AXON VIBE
WILL NOTIFY THE MTA AND UPDATE
PASSENGERS WITH SMARTPHONE
ALERTS.
>> A TYPICAL DAY, I DON'T EVEN
REALIZE THERE'S A PROBLEM ON THE
F TRAIN UNTIL I'M ON THE
PLATFORM.
IN THE SCENARIO WE'RE PILOTING,
I WOULD GET AN ALERT BEFORE I
LEAVE MY HOUSE VIA AN MTA APP
SAYING THE F TRAIN IS
EXPERIENCING DELAYS, TAKE THE 4
OR 5 INSTEAD, OR EVEN BETTER,
IT'S A PLEASANT DAY OUT, TAKE A
CITY BIKE, THERE ARE TEN
AVAILABLE TWO BLOCKS AWAY FROM
YOU.
WE'LL ALSO BE FOCUSING ON
ELEVATOR AND ESCALATOR ACCESS.
OUR AMBITION IS TO INCORPORATE A
THIRD PARTY MOBILITY COMPANY'S
SERVICES.
>> Reporter: AND ANOTHER COMPANY
WAS SELECTED TO ADDRESS THE BUS
CHALLENGE.
THE CO-FOUNDER AND CEO.
>> WE PROVIDE PREDICTIVE
DIAGNOSTICS FOR VEHICLES.
THAT'S SOFTWARE THAT PREDICTS
UPCOMING VEHICLE MAINTENANCE
ISSUES.
FOR A FLEET LIKE THE NEW YORK
MTA, THAT MEANS HELPING TO
INCREASE THE RELIABILITY AND
DECREASING THE TIME FOR PROPER
MAINTENANCE.
>> Reporter: HE SAYS BUS DATA
COLLECTED BY THE MTA WAS
EXAMINED AND THE RECORDS WERE
COMPARED WITH THE ACTUAL
SITUATION THAT AROSE.
>> WE WERE ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY
PREDICT 70% OF THE UPCOMING
ISSUES ON THESE BUSES 48 HOURS
IN ADVANCE.
FURTHER, THE PILOT ALSO
HIGHLIGHTED OPPORTUNITIES TO
FURTHER IMPROVE THIS PREDICTION
ACCURACY.
>> Reporter: QUINTERO SAYS THE
INAUGURAL TRANSIT TECH LAB IS A
GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR THE
SELECTED SMALLER TECH COMPANIES
AND REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE
COMPANIES AGREED.
>> THEY REALLY HAVE ACCESS
DIRECTLY TO THEIR CUSTOMERS IN
LEARNING WHAT THE CHALLENGES ARE
DIRECTLY IN NEW YORK CITY
TRANSIT AND REALLY LEARNING
FIRSTHAND HOW THEY CAN IMPROVE
THEIR PRODUCTS AND FURTHER SCALE
THEIR PRODUCTS TO OTHER TRANSIT
SYSTEMS.
>> Reporter: ONCE THE YEAR-LONG
PILOT PROGRAM IS COMPLETE,
QUINTERO SAYS THERE'S NO
OBLIGATION FOR THE MTA TO
CONTINUE A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE
COMPANIES.
>> THIS IS REALLY A SANDBOX FOR
THE MTA TO EXPLORE POTENTIAL
INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS.
AT THAT POINT THE MTA WILL HAVE
THE OPPORTUNITY TO DECIDE IF
THIS IS A SOLUTION THAT THEY
WANT TO MOVE FORWARD WITH.
>> Reporter: ALTHOUGH MTA
CHAIRMAN FOY SAYS HE HOPES ALL
FOUR COMPANIES DO GET SELECTED
AFTER THE ONE-YEAR PILOT PROGRAM
IS COMPLETE.
>> I THINK THE WORK THEY'VE DONE
IS INSPIRING AND MAKING IT REAL
FOR CUSTOMERS ON BOTH SUBWAYS
AND BUSES IS A NEXT STEP.
THAT'S AN MTA CALL.
>> Reporter: THE TRANSIT TECH
LAB'S ONE-YEAR PILOT PROGRAM IS
CURRENTLY UNDER WAY.
TRYING OUT THESE TECHNOLOGIES ON
BUSES IN THE BRONX, VARIOUS
MANHATTAN SUBWAY STATIONS AND
ELSEWHERE.
I'M MADDIE ORTON FOR
"METROFOCUS."
>>> FILMMAKER MAN FORD
KIRSCHHEIMER HAS BEEN
DOCUMENTING NEW YORK CITY INIS
INIMITABLE WAY FOR HALF A
CENTURY.
THE 80-YEAR-OLD FILM PROFESSOR
HAS LOVED NEW YORK SINCE HE AND
HIS FAMILY CAME HERE IN 1936 TO
ESCAPE NAZI GERMANY.
IT'S RECORDED THE RHYTHMS OF HIS
ADOPTED CITY.
FOR HIS NEWEST FILM WHICH HAD
ITS PREMIERE AT LINCOLN CENTER,
HE USED FOOTAGE HE AND A
COLLEAGUE SHOT 60 YEARS AGO.
"FREE TIME" IS A MEDITATION OF
CITY LIFE SET TO THE SOUNDS OF
JAZZ AND CLASSICAL MUSIC, THIS
TIME CARPETING THE METROPOLIS
DURING A SEEMINGLY GENTLER TIME
GONE BY.
HERE IS A PREVIEW.

§

§

§

>> AND JOINING US TO TALK ABOUT
"FREE TIME" AND ABOUT HIS LIFE
AND CAREER IS FILMMAKER MANNY
KIRSCHHEIMER.
IT'S AN HONOR TO HAVE YOU HERE,
WELCOME TO THE PROGRAM.
>> THANK YOU, RAFAEL.
>> YOU SHOT THIS FILM 60 YEARS
AGO.
WHY DID YOU SHOOT THIS FILM,
WHAT WAS YOUR INITIAL INTENTION
WITH IT?
>> WELL, WALTER HESS, MY PARTNER
AT THE TIME, AND I WERE SHOOTING
A LARGE SCRIPTED FILM CALLED
"DREAM OF A CITY."
AND ITS MAIN THEME HAD TO DO
WITH THE WAY THE GLASS BOXES
WERE TAKING OVER THE CITY, THE
DOWNTOWN, MIDTOWN PART OF IT.
>> THE GLASS SKYSCRAPERS?
>> YEAH.
I CALL THEM BOXES, YOU KNOW?
WE DEPLORED IT.
AND IT HAD SCENES OF THE
WRECKING OF THE WOOLDER BUILDIN
IN FAVOR OF THE NEWER ONES.
WE DIDN'T GET TO EDIT THAT FILM
BUT WE SHOT A GREAT DEAL OF
MATERIAL, WE SHOT OVER 30 HOURS'
WORTH OF MATERIAL WITH A BOLEX
BLACK AND WHITE, 100-FOOT ROLLS.
ANYWAY, SO SINCE WE WEREN'T ABLE
TO EDIT IT TOGETHER, I ASKED
PERMISSION FROM HIM TO MAKE MY
OWN FILMS OUT OF THE MATERIAL
AND HE COULD MAKE HIS OWN FILMS.
SO THAT SOON AFTER, I MADE A
HALF HOUR FILM CALLED "CLAW,"
WHICH WAS ABOUT THAT SUBJECT.
>> BUT NOW YOU REVIVE IT AND
MAKE A WHOLE FILM OUT OF THAT
FOOTAGE.
WHY NOW?
>> RIGHT.
THAT WAS ONLY A HALF HOUR, AND
THIS IS AN HOUR.
WHY NOW?
I MADE A FILM LAST YEAR WHICH I
ACTUALLY CALLED "DREAM OF A
CITY" WHICH WAS ALSO AT THE FILM
FESTIVAL.
YOU KNOW, I -- I DON'T LIKE TO
MAKE THE SAME KIND OF FILM TWICE
IN A ROW.
SO IN BETWEEN I MADE A TALKING
HEADS FILM, AN INTERVIEW FILM
CALLED "MIDDLE CLASS MONEY,
HONEY," ALL ABOUT PEOPLE'S
RELATIONSHIP TO MONEY.
THEN I FIGURED, ALL RIGHT, I'LL
GO BACK TO THIS MATERIAL AND SEE
WHAT'S LEFT.
AND SO THAT BECAME "FREE TIME."
>> SO YOU'VE BEEN SHOOTING THIS
FILM -- I MEAN, THIS CITY, FOR
DECADES.
PROBABLY NO ONE KNOWS BETTER HOW
IT HAS CHANGED.
HOW DO YOU THINK IT HAS CHANGED
FOR THE BETTER AND FOR THE
WORSE?
>> WELL, FOR THE BETTER, THE AIR
QUALITY IS BETTER.
THERE ARE TREES EVERYWHERE.
THERE IS NOT A TREE IN THIS
FILM, YOU KNOW?
AND NOW, I MEAN, I LIVE ON
BROADWAY AND THE MALL IS FILLED,
IT'S LUSH, YOU KNOW THAT IT'S
SUMMERTIME WHEN IT'S SUMMERTIME.
THOSE TWO THINGS WHERE
DEFINITELY IMPROVED.
WHAT'S GOTTEN WORSE IS THE
TRAFFIC, OH, MY GOD, YOU KNOW,
ON ANY DAY, IN THE MIDDLE OF THE
DAY, THINGS ARE BLOCKED UP.
AND THE FACT WHICH THE FILM
DEMONSTRATES, THAT KIDS DON'T
PLAY ON THE STREET ANYMORE.
>> THAT'S TRUE.
>> AND I ATTRIBUTE THAT TO THE
CELLPHONE.
I THINK THE KIDS GO UP TO THEIR
HOUSES AFTER SCHOOL AND DON'T GO
DOWN TO PLAY THE WAY WE USED TO.
>> FIRST OF ALL, WHAT IGNITED
THIS LOVE AFFAIR BETWEEN YOU AND
THIS CITY?
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO MAKE THIS
THE PREMIER SUBJECT OF YOUR
FILM?
>> WELL, YOU KNOW, IT'S A
LOVE/HATE AFFAIR, ACTUALLY.
OUR PROTEST AGAINST THOSE GLASS
BOXES WAS A BAD PART OF THE
CITY, AND IT'S HAPPENING NOW IN
BROOKLYN AND IT'S HAPPENING ON
57th STREET, IN MANHATTAN, YOU
KNOW, THESE VERY TALL STRUCTURES
VYING WITH THE EMPIRE STATE, YOU
KNOW, AND CASTING SHADOWS ON THE
PARK.
SO THAT'S THE HATE PART OF NEW
YORK, I REALLY DEPLORE IT AS I
GO DOWN THE AVENUE.
>> WE'VE GOT 10 TO 15 SECONDS
LEFT.
ARE YOU STILL GOING OUT ON THE
STREETS SHOOTING?
>> NO.
MY LAST FILM, I WENT OUT ON THE
STREET AND INTERVIEWED PEOPLE
WHO COLLECTED CANS AND BOTTLES
FOR A NICKEL.
>> AS I TOLD YOU BEFORE, WHEN I
CAME TO NEW YORK CITY, I ALMOST
GOT YOU AS A PROFESSOR, NOW I
WISH I DID, IT WAS THE WRONG
DECISION.
IT WAS AN HONOR TO HAVE YOU HERE
WITH US.
>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH, RAFAEL.
