>>> TONIGHT ON "METRO FOCUS," IS
THERE SUCH A THING AS HEALTHY
AND HELPFUL FAST FOOD.
WE TACKLE THAT QUESTION IN SUPER
SIZE ME TOO.
THIS TIME VISITING THE POULTRY
INDUSTRY.
YOU WON'T BELIEVE HE'S PULLING
OUT OF THE FRIAR.
HE WAS ONE OF THE MOST TALENTED
SHAKESPEARE ACTOR.
HE WAS BORN IN PUERTO RICO.
AMERICAN MASTERS.
WE WELCOME HIS WIFE WHO SHARES A
PERSONAL MEMORY WITH LIFE WITH
ADVERSE TILL ACTORS.
THOSE STORIES AND MORE AS
"METROFOCUS" STARTS RIGHT NOW.
§§
THIS IS "METRO FOCUS," RAFAEL PI
ROMAN, JACK FORD AND JENNA
FLANAGAN.

>> HAS FAST FOOD TRULY TURN THE
CORNER?
IT HAS BEEN 15 YEARS SINCE
DOCUMENTARIES GAVE US A GLIMPSE
OF FAST FOOD CULTURE IN SUPER
SIZE ME.
NOW, HE'S BACK TAKING US ON THE
ROAD YET AGAIN IN SUPER SIZE ME
TOO, HOLY CHICKEN.
GOING BEHIND THE SCENE OF
CHICKEN, SHOWING US THE REALITY
OF HEALTHY AND ORGANIC, NATURAL
FOOD AND ITS QUEST FROM
AMERICAN'S FARMS AND FAST FOOD
DRIVE-THRUS.
>> ANYBODY TELLING ME WHAT'S
GOING ON INSIDE THE CHICKEN
COMPANY.
>> THE TERM FRIED HAS EVOLVED TO
CRISPY.
>> THEY'RE CRACKING US OUT ON
MSG.
>> LOOK, IT IS HOLLOW.
JOINING ME NOW IS MORGAN
SPURLOCK AND JONATHAN, A CHICKEN
FARMER.
WELCOME TO THE PROGRAM.
>> I HAVE TO SAY YOU ARE THE
REASON WHY I GAVE UP EATING
MEAT.
WHY PART TWO AND WHY DID YOU
DECIDE TO REVISIT FAST FOOD AND
PARTICULARLY CHICKEN.
>> IF YOU TAKE A WALK OUTSIDE
RIGHT NOW, YOU WILL SEE THERE IS
BEEN THIS INCREDIBLE GREEN
WASHING OF THE FOOD INDUSTRY
ESPECIALLY THE FAST FOOD
INDUSTRY WHERE EVERYTHING IS
WRAPPED IN THIS LETTUCE WRAP AND
EVERYTHING HAS THIS BEAUTIFUL
GREEN LOOK.
WE MARKET TO THIS IS A MUCH
HEALTHIER WAY TO EAT.
YOU PAIR IT WITH THE CHICKEN
EXPLOSION THAT'S HAPPENING, WE
ARE RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE
CHICKEN SANDWICH.
>> WE FELT IT IS A PERFECT
CHICKEN STORM.
WE EAT 15 BILLION CHICKENS
A YEAR.
EVERY TIME YOU AND I ARE TALKING
RIGHT NOW, THAT'S 300 CHICKENS
BEING EATEN.
WHY DON'T I OPEN MY OWN FAST AND
CASUAL CHICKEN RESTAURANT AND
SHOW YOU WHAT IT MEANS.
>> GENTLEMEN, I WANT TO TALK
ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE.
YOU ACTUALLY TAKE US INTO WHAT
THE COST IS, THE HUMAN COST OF
PRODUCING ALL THIS CHICKEN WE
ARE CONSUMING.
>> YES, FARMERS ARE TREATED
TERRIBLE AND ALSO THE CHICKENS
ARE, TOO.
THEY ARE GROWN AND INHUMANE,
INHUMANE CHICKEN CAN'T BE
HEALTHY.
FARMERS ARE TERRIBLY MISTREATED
AND NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT THIS.
THIS IS A FORM OF SLAVERY OF
THIS GOING ON.
I CAN'T TOTALLY EXPLAIN HOW BAD
IT IS BUT WITHIN THE LAST THREE
YEARS OF IT BEING TREMENDOUSLY
BAD.
SUICIDE AND DEPRESSANTS AND ALL
THOSE SORTS OF STUFF, TARMERLAN
THEY'LL
DO IT IN A HEARTBEAT.
>> THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE GET
A CHANCE TO FOLLOW BECAUSE
FARMING IS NOT JUST SOMETHING
THAT'S LIKE YOU KNOW I GREW UP
AND I WENT TO COLLEGE AND I
DECIDE TO BE WHATEVER.
THIS IS A GENERATIONAL
PROFESSION THAT A LOT OF FARMERS
ARE IN, IS THAT CORRECT?
>> THAT'S RIGHT, I AM THIRD
GENERATION CHICKEN FARMER.
MY SON WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FOURTH
GENERATION BUT HE'S BEEN
BLACKBALLED.
THE COMPANY MY WIFE GREW WITH
STOPPED PLACEMENTS OF BIRDS
THERE.
SHE COULD NOT TELL THEM WHAT I
WAS DOING WITH MORGAN SPULOCK.
>> THE COMPANY RETALIATED
AGAINST HER JUST BECAUSE
JONATHAN WAS DOING INTERVIEWS
AND CONSULTING US WITH THE FILM.
THEIR SON, ZACH, WAS GROWING OUR
CHICKEN.
THEIR FAMILY IS BLACK HOLED BY
THE INDUSTRY FOR SPEAKING OUT.
>> HOW MUCH OF THIS IS ABOUT THE
OVERALL LIKE FOOD PROCESSING, I
DON'T KNOW, INDUSTRY THAT WE
LIVE IN RIGHT NOW?
>> MONOPOLY.
>> A LOT OF IT IS ABOUT THAT.
WE ARE LIVING IN A WORLD WHERE
FINDING INDEPENDENTLY GROWTH
CHICKEN IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO
FIND.
FOR US TO FIND A BIRD TOOK US
FOREVER TO FIND.
WE FIND THIS LITTLE ONE LITTLE
HATCHERY THAT WE CAN RAISE IN A
FARM.
IF YOU WANT TO BUY THE HEALTHEST
CHICKEN YOU CAN, IT IS VERY
HARD.
IN NEW YORK CITY WE -- IN
ALABAMA, JONATHAN CAN DRIVE
RIGHT A FARM AND FIND A CHICKEN
GROWER.
FOR A LOT OF US IT IS NOT EASY.
FINDING THE PERFECTLY GROWN
VEGETABLE OR WHATEVER, IT IS
TAKEN AWAY FROM OUR FOOD SYSTEM.
>> OF COURSE, IT MAKES YOU THINK
OF FARMERS AND SO MANY OTHER
FOOD SOURCES THAT I AM SURE CAN
RELATE TO YOUR STORY.
I WANT TO TURN BACK TO THE
RESTAURANT A LITTLE BIT.
IT DOES POKE FUN AT WHAT A LOT
OF US HAVE BOUGHT INTO.
THE NOTION OF ORGANIC AND YOU
KNOW LOCALLY SOURCED AND YOU
LIKE PULL THE RUG OUT FROM
UNDERNEATH ALL OF IT.
>> THE GOAL IS HOW CAN I GIVE
YOU WHAT YOU WANT?
WHAT YOU WANT IS A DELICIOUS
CRISPY CHICKEN SANDWICH.
I WANT TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT MY
CHOICES.
>> WHICH IS WHAT WE DO.
NOW WE MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD ABOUT
THE CHOICE BY TELLING YOU
EVERYTHING THAT'S WRONG WITH THE
BUSINESS.
I TELL YOU HOW I AM MANIPULATING
YOU AND MARKETING TO YOU.
ALL OF THESE CUES TAKEN PLACE IN
THE RESTAURANT SUDDENLY MAKE YOU
GO WOW.
I GET IT.
IT IS LIKE YOU SEE IT FOR THE
FIRST TIME.
IT IS INCREDIBLE.
PEOPLE CAN COME TO WHOLLY
CHICKEN AND EXPERIENCE IT
DOWNTOWN.
IT IS A RESTAURANT THAT YOU OPEN
AND YOU START INSIDE OHIO.
>> IT WAS THE TEST CAPITAL
MARKET IN THE WORLD.
IT IS A MULTI CULTURAL CITY AND
MULTI GENERATIONAL CITY.
IT IS ECONOMICALLY DIVERSE AND
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SO THEY
CAN TRY IN THIS ONE LITTLE
POCKET.
IF IT WORKS THERE, IT WILL WORK
IN MOST PLACES IN AMERICA.
WE TEST THE RESTAURANT THERE AND
IT IS EXPLODED.
NOW, WE ARE OPENING THEM ONE ON
23rd STREET IN NEW YORK CITY.
>> THERE ARE SIGNS EVERYWHERE
DEPICT THE ENTIRE PROCESS OF
FARM, NOT TABLE BUT YOUR TRADE.
>> HOW IT GOES INTO THE
MARKETING AND WANTING IT OR
DESIRE IT.
MAKING YOU FEEL HEALTHIER.
WE HAVE A SALAD UP ON THE MENU
THAT'S ONLY THERE, IT SAYS JUST
TO MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER ABOUT
YOURSELF.
>> JONATHAN.
WHAT IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP NOW?
YOU TALK ABOUT BEING BLACKBALLED
BY THE FOOD INDUSTRY OR LIKE A
BIG CHICKEN, I GUESS IS WHAT WE
ARE CALLING IT.
WHERE DOES IT LEAVE YOUR FARM
NOW?
>> WELL, I HAVE A FEW HEADED
CATTLE.
IT HAS BEEN REALLY TOUGH.
IN 2014 WHEN CONGRESS GET AWAY
WITH USDA, WE CAN SEE WHERE IT
COMES FROM.
THE PRICE OF MY CATTLE DROP FROM
$1,400 TO $500 OR $600.
SO MY CATTLE OPERATION TOOK A
HIT TOO BECAUSE OF OUR CORRUPT
CONGRESS AND USDA.
33 FARMERS GO OUT OF BUSINESS
EVERY SINGLE DAY.
IT IS BEEN TAKEN OVER BY LARGE
CORPORATIONS THAT DOES NOT CARE
ABOUT YOU OR YOUR HELP OR THE
ANIMALS.
THIS IS WHY I AM SPEAKING OUT.
I WANT SOMETHING DONE ABOUT
THIS.
CONGRESS NEEDS TO GET UP AND GET
OFF THEIR REARS AND GET STARTED
OUT HERE AND SLAVE THE FAMILY'S
FARM.
>> SPEAKING OF CARING ABOUT THE
ANIMALS AND EVEN IN THE
RESTAURANT, THERE IS A SECTION
OF HOW BIG A FREE RANGE CHICKEN
GETS THROWN AROUND.
>> WE GIVE YOU THE EXAMPLE OF
WHAT WE SUBMIT TO USDA AND GOT
APPROVED.
IT COULD HAVE BEEN LESS.
WE SUBMITTED AN AREA 5 FEET BY
5 FEET AND SMALLER BY WHERE WE
ARE RIGHT NOW.
IT IS QUOTE ON QUOTE FREE RANGE.
YOU SEE THIS KIND OF UNVEILING
AND UNMASKING OF THE MARKET AND
LABELING TACTICS THAT ARE USED
BY THIS CORPORATION AND FREE
RANGE WHERE YOU THINK YOU HAVE
THIS CHICKEN RUNNING AROUND
OUTSIDE AND ALL YOU HAVE TO DO
IS OPEN THE DOOR.
THEY DON'T HAVE TO GO OUTSIDE
AND HAVE ACCESS TO THE OUT OF
DOORS TO BE CALLED FREE RANGE.
>> WOW.
>> IF YOU WATCH THE FILM, YOU
SEE THE FEED THAT MY CHICKENS
HAD, IT COULD NOT BEGAN I CAN
BECAUSE THERE IS PORK PRODUCT IN
IT.
SO NOW YOU LOOK AT THIS AND YOU
START TO ASK YOURSELF SO THAT
BIRD WOULD HAVE BEEN ORGANIC,
FREE RANGE AND ALL NATURAL AND
CAGE AGREE BIRD, YOU HEAR THAT,
THAT'S THE GREATEST THING EVER.
YOU REALIZE IT IS ALL MARKETING.
>> WHERE DO YOU SEE THE AMERICAN
FOODS SUPPLY RIGHT NOW WHERE IT
EXISTS AND WHAT DO YOU THINK IT
NEEDS TO HAPPEN?
>> THE AMERICAN FOOD SUPPLY IS
IN DANGER RIGHT NOW.
WHEN YOU TAKE OUT THE FAMILY
FARMERS THAT CARES ABOUT THE
FOOD AND YOU TAKE THESE
FACTORIES AND LARGE CORPORATIONS
AND THEY'RE TAKING IT OVER NOW.
THIS IS THE NEW COSTCO, COSTCO
IS GOING INTO BUSINESS, THEY'RE
40% THERE ROTISERRI CHICKEN.
AND SO I AM SURE THEY'RE GETTING
FDA MONEY TO COME IN.
THEY'RE TAKING FARMERS OUT OF
THE PICTURE.
LARGE CORPORATIONS ARE TAKEN
OVER THIS.
THE FOOD SITUATION WILL ONLY GET
WORSE.
AND ALL THAT GET WORSE WITH THE
LARGE CORPORATIONS AND FAMILY
FARMS OUT OF BUSINESS.
THEY'RE PREDICTING THREE OR FOUR
OR FIVE YEARS ONLY 100,000
FARMERS LEFT.
>> ONCE PEOPLE HAVE SEEN THIS
FILM AND HAD A GREAT CHICKEN.
IT IS SOME GREAT CHICKEN
SANDWICHES THAT YOU MAKE.
WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO TAKE
AWAY FROM THIS?
>> THERE IS AS FEW THINGS.
THE FILM AND THE EXPERIENCE OF
THE RESTAURANT GIVES YOU A GREAT
IDEA UNDERSTANDING THE POWER YOU
HAVE.
THE POWER YOU HAVE IS WHERE YOU
SPEND YOUR MONEY.
WHEN YOU LEAVE THE RESTAURANT,
WE HOPE WE DON'T SEE YOU SOON.
WE HAVE IT ON THE DOOR.
NUTRITION AND DOCTORS EATING
THIS FOOD ONCE AND MONTH AND THE
SANDWICH IS SO FOOD THAT WE WANT
YOU TO BE BACK.
YOU HAVE THE POWER TO CHOOSE
WHERE YOU SPEND IT AND WHO YOU
SUPPORT AND WHERE YOU GET THAT
FOOD AND THE MORE THAT WE CAN
NOT ONLY EDUCATE BUT BRING THAT
POWER BACK TO PEOPLE AND
UNDERSTANDING, THE MORE WE CAN
MAKE AN ECONOMIC IMPACT.
I THINK OUR GOAL AT WHOLLY
CHICKEN IS HOW MANY FARMERS CAN
WE DO WITH JONATHAN AND NOW WE
HAVE FARMERS THAT CAN GROW IT IN
ANOTHER TOWN.
YOU ARE CREATING A SYSTEM
OUTSIDE OF A SYSTEM WHERE
CHICKEN FARMERS CAN LIVE AND
WORK AND SUPPORT THEIR FAMILY
AND THE COMMUNITY.
>> JONATHAN, YOU ALSO MENTION
THE WORLD WASHINGTON IS NOT
PLAYING IN ALL OF THIS.
WE DID SEE YOU MAKE AN ATTEMPT
TO INVITE ONE OF THE NATIONAL
CHICKEN COUNCIL PEOPLE TO YOUR
OPENING.
WHAT DO YOU THINK WASHINGTON OR
WHAT LAWMAKERS COULD BE DOING TO
SUPPORT FAMILY FARMS?
>> THEY NEED TO STOP TAKING
CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THESE LARGE
PACKERS AND DECIDE THEY WANT TO
HELP CONSUMERS AND LUNCH
PROGRAMS WITH SAFE.
THEY NEED TO THINK OF SAFE.
WHAT THEY DO IS THEY TURN A
BLIND EYE IS WHAT'S GOING ON OUT
FARMERS CAN'T PAY THEM.
THEN THEY COME OUT OF TWO OR
THREE YEARS.
WE NEED TO SHUT THE USDA AND
CLOSE ALL PROCESSING.
FAMILY FARMERS HAVE PROCESS
PLANTS AND SO SOME OF THEM THEY
BASICALLY SHUT THEM DOWN AND
MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR A SMALL
FARMER TO EXIST IF THEY WANTED
TO PROCESS THEIR OWN CATTLE OR
CHICKENS AND SELL OUT.
>> ONE MORE QUESTION.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT SEEMS TO
KEEP COMING UP WHEN WE TALK
ABOUT ORGANIC AND HEALTHY.
IT IS OUT OF REACH FOR SO MANY
PEOPLE BECAUSE OF PRICE.
HOW MUCH OF THE PRICE AMERICANS
ARE INSISTING TO PAY DRIVING
THIS PROBLEM THAT JONATHAN IS
FACING.
>> A LOT.
IT IS TWO SIDES.
ONE IT IS BEING DRIVEN BY
AMERICANS.
WE CONTINUE TO DRIVE DOWN OUR
ECONOMY AND DRIVE DOWN HOW MUCH
PEOPLE MAKE IN THIS JOB.
WE LIVE IN A WORLD OF A SERVICE
ECONOMY.
THESE ARE NOT COMPUTER
PROGRAMMERS.
THESE ARE SERVICE JOBS, THESE
ARE PEOPLE MAKING MINIMUM WAGE.
OUR ECONOMIC SYSTEM WHERE WE ARE
ONLY BELOW THE DENOMINATOR FOOD
COST.
LOOKING TO TAKE AS MUCH MONEY
OUT OF THE SYSTEM BUT YOU HAVE
PEOPLE TO REINVEST THAT SO THE
PEOPLE AT THE BOTTOM HAVE ACCESS
TO BETTER FOOD.
THINGS ARE NOT GOING TO CHANGE.
PART OF THAT COMES DOWN TO
PEOPLE LIKE US, WE CAN DO BETTER
TO MAKE THAT FOOD MORE AVAILABLE
WHICH MAKES THE PRICE GO LOWER.
>> JONATHAN, DO YOU THINK IT IS
POSSIBLE FOR SMALL FAMILY FARMS
TO BE ABLE TO COME BACK IN A WAY
THEY'RE ABLE TO ACTUALLY FEED
THE LOCAL PUBLIC WITHIN THEIR
COMMUNITIES SO THAT PEOPLE ARE
ACTUALLY EATING FOOD THAT HAS
NOT TRAVELED ACROSS THE COUNTRY
OR MASS PRODUCE.
MAYBE YOU CAN'T GET EVERYTHING
YOU WANT AND THROW AWAY HALF OF
IT BECAUSE YOU DID NOT GET A
CHANCE TO EAT IT.
DO YOU THINK THAT CAN BE BROUGHT
BACK AND CAN IT BE SUSTAINED?
>> IT SURE CAN.
IT CAN BE BROUGHT BACK.
ORGANIZATIONS COMPETITIVE
MARKET, OCM, THAT'S WHAT WE ARE
TRYING TO DO.
MAKE IT A FAIR AND COMPETITIVE
MARKETPLACE FOR US FARMERS TO
MAKE A COME BACK AND DO THIS.
IT IS VERY POSSIBLE AND REALLY
WE GOT TO HAVE IT FOR OUR SAFETY
AND OUR COUNTRY IS IN DANGER
NOW.
IF YOU CONTROL THE FOOD, DON'T
YOU CONTROL THE PEOPLE, TOO?
IT HAS BEEN TAKEN OVER.
>> WHEN PEOPLE GO TO THE GROCERY
STORE, WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST THEY
ARE LOOKING FOR.
>> I WOULD LOOK FOR IF THERE ARE
ANY GROWN OR PROCESSED IN THE
USA LABELING.
PACKAGED IN THE USA OR PRODUCT
OF USA, IT IS NOT USA.
THAT'S ILLEGAL.
IT SHOULD NOT GO ON.
TRY TO MAKE A RAPPORT WITH THE
FARMER.
THERE IS SOME AROUND IN NEW YORK
HERE.
GO UP TO HIS FARM AND BUY FROM
HIM.
WE GOT TO GET THE FARMERS.
GO THERE AND GO BUY IT.
IT IS GOING TO BE HIGHER BUT IT
IS HEALTHIER.
>> YEAH.
>> OF COURSE.
>> SUPPORT THE FARMERS.
>> SUPPORT THE FARMERS AND GO
EAT WHOLE CHICKEN.
HAVE A GREAT SANDWICH AND NEVER
COME BACK
>> THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU SO MUCH MORGAN AND
JONATHAN.
>> SUPER SIZED ME TWO.
IT IS AVAILABLE IN SELECT
THEATERS.

>>> THAT WAS A CLIP FROM 1991.
RAUL JULIA IS NOT KNOWN FOR HIS
WORK IN HOLLYWOOD BUT FOR HIS
GROUND BREAKING ROLE IN
SHAKESPEARE PRODUCTIONS FOR THE
PUBLIC STATION.
SADLY JULIAS' CAREER WAS CUT
SHORT AT AGE 54.
13 AMERICAN MASTERS AND PUBLIC
CASTING, JOIN FORCES TO PRESENT
THE FIRST DOCUMENT OF HIS
AMAZING LIFE AND WORK.
RAUL JULIAS, FROM HIS NATIVE
PUERTO RICO TO THE CREATIVE HOT
BID OF NEW YORK CITY IN THE
1960s AND TO PROMINENCE ON
BROADWAY IN HOLLYWOOD.
HERE IS A LOOK.
>> RAUL IS EXTRAORDINARY
MAGNETIC.
HE SPOKEN HIS PROUD PUERTO RICAN
ACCENT.
>> PROUD.
>> MY OWN PUERTO RICAN
BACKGROUND.
>> THE FIRST TIME I SAW
SHAKESPEARE, THE PART WAS
MESMERIZING.
>> HE WAS ON THE POSTER
EVERYWHERE WHEN IT WAS SO
INSPIRING TO SEE IT EVERYWHERE
AND EVERY TRAIN STATION.
>> I HAVE NEVER SEEN AN ACTOR
LIKE RAUL.
>> IT WAS ART FROM THE VIEW.
>> MY DAD FELT THAT HE COULD
CREATE CHANGE IN THE WORLD AND
BE AN ACTIVIST AS AN ACTOR
THROUGH THE ROLE THAT IS HE
PLAYED.
>> IT IS NO LONGER YOU OR I, IT
IS YOU AND I.
>> HE WAS UNDENIABLE.
>> WHEN YOU HAVE THAT KIND OF
TALENT AND DISCIPLINE.
SUCCESS COULD NOT BE AVOIDED.
>> THAT'S THE BEAUTY.
JOINING US NOW TO TALK ABOUT THE
DOCUMENTARY, THE FILM IN THEATER
AND THE WORLD AND HIS WIFE IS
MARY POLLAWAY.
>> THANK YOU FOR ASKING ME TO BE
HERE.
>> LET'S GO BACK TO THE
BEGINNING, HOW DID YOU COME
TOGETHER?
WAS IT LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT?
>> I FELL IN LOVE WITH RAUL IN
INSTANTLY WHEN HE REMOVED HIS
GLASSES AND HE LOOKED AT ME WITH
THOSE BEAUTIFUL BROWN EYES, WHO
YOU, THAT'S SOMETHING.
I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG IT TOOK
HIM AROUND FEELING THE SAME WAY
ABOUT ME.
>> LISTEN, A NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN
THE FILM MAKE THE POINT IN THE
COURSE OF HIS CAREER, RAUL,
BROKE NEW GROUND AS A HISPANIC
ACTOR AND AS AN ACTOR, PERIOD.
I THINK THE FILM SHOWS IT ALL
TRUE.
WHY DID IT TAKE 25 YEARS TO MAKE
A FILM LIKE THIS ABOUT THIS
LARGER THAN LIFE MAN?
>> THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION.
I DON'T KNOW WHY.
I AM THANKFUL THAT IT HAPPENED.
IT HAPPENED BECAUSE THEN JESUS
CAME TO ME 2.5 YEARS AGO AND HE
ASKED ME THE SAME THING.
HOW COME THERE IS NOT A
DOCUMENTARY OF RAUL?
HE'S NOT MY GENERATION BUT I
GREW UP AND I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT
HIM.
I KNOW THERE IS A GREAT OUT
POURING AFFECTION FOR RAUL AND
WE GIVE MANY REWARDS THROUGH THE
PUERTO RICAN FAMILY INSTITUTE.
THIS WAS ALL HAPPENING THE LAST
25 YEARS AND THEN IT CAME TO ME
AND I ASKED ME YES, I THINK THAT
WOULD BE GREAT.
>> SO, IT IS HARD ENOUGH FOR
ACTOR BORN AND BRED AND MAKE IT
IN THIS CRUEL BUSINESS.
HOW MUCH HARDER WAS IT FOR A MAN
WHO'S BORN AND BRED IN PUERTO
RICO CAME TO THE UNITED STATES
AS AN ADULT TO MAKE IT IN THE
BUSINESS.
HOW HARD IN OTHER WORDS WAS IT
FOR RAUL JULIAS?
>> IT WAS CHALLENGING IN THE
BEGINNING.
>> HE WON THE AMATEUR HOUR WHEN
HE WAS STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL.
THERE WAS TALENT THERE.
HE WAS SEEN IN THE PRODUCTION
AND AFTER THE SHOW, HE SAID
RAUL, YOU MUST COME TO NEW YORK.
RAUL WAS THINKING TO GO TO NEW
YORK AND GOING TO EUROPE.
AFTERWARDS, HE CAME TO NEW YORK.
WHAT HAPPENS WAS HE MOTIVATED TO
BE SUCCESSFUL AND HE KNEW WHERE
HE WAS.
HE WAS BORN IN PUERTO RICO.
MY SON MAKES THIS POINT, MY SON
MAKES THIS POINT.
YOU ARE NOT LATINO IN PUERTO
RICO.
YOU ARE YOU IN PUERTO RICO.
IF WHEN YOU COME HERE THEN ALL
OF A SUDDEN, YOU ARE LATINO.
RAUL HAD WONDERFUL PARENTS AND
UPBRINGING HERE SO HE WAS ARMED
WITH A CERTAIN KNOWLEDGE AND
CONFIDENCE.
HE WAS ABLE TO PRESS THROUGH
EVERYTHING TO MAKE IT IN THE
END.
>> I THINK I TOLD YOU THIS WHEN
WE FIRST MET A FEW YEARS AGO
THAT THE FIRST TIME I SAW RAUL
PERFORMED, I WENT WITH MY
BROTHER AFTER I MOVE TO NEW YORK
TO SEE HIM IN SHAKESPEARE.
I CAN CLEARLY UNDERSTAND WHEN
HE SPEAKS SHAKESPEARIAN AND NOT
ONLY THAT, HE DOES IT SO
NATURALLY.
HE WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST OF
THE LATE 20th CENTURY.
WHAT MAKES THIS PUERTO RICAN
ACTOR SUCH A GREAT SHAKESPEARIAN
ACT?
>> HE LOVES ACTING AND HE LOVED
THE WORDS HIMSELF.
THE STORY TELLER OF THE SPANISH
HERITAGE SINCE HIGH SCHOOL.
HE ALWAYS STUDIED THEM AND
ALWAYS APPRECIATED IT AND ALWAYS
WAS SPEAKING THOSE WORDS.
IT DID NOT COME AS A NOVELTY TO
HIM.
>> YOU SAY IN THE FILM IN HIS
LIFE AND WORK, RAUL TRIED TO BE
AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT WAS POSSIBLE.
WHAT DID HE TEACH YOU WHAT WAS
POSSIBLE AND WHAT DOES HE TEACH
WHAT IS POSSIBLE?
>> I THINK RAUL OPERATED THROUGH
LIFE.
HE WAS A BIG FAT YES TO LIFE.
A LOT OF PEOPLE HAD A LOT OF
REQUESTS AND HE DID NOT LIKE TO
SAY NO SO HE WOULD SAY YES.
HE DID A LOT OF THINGS WHICH
GAVE HIM GREAT PLEASURE.
IT WOULD SAY THAT IS ONE THING
THAT INSPIRES ME.
AFTER WHEN HE PASSED AWAY, WHEN
PEOPLE WOULD ASK ME CAN HE DO
THIS OR THAT?
I WOULD TRY TO BE LIKE HIM AND
SAY YES.
>> I HOPE I HAVE DONE THAT AS
MUCH AS I CAN IN HIS NAME.
HE WAS A FULLY SELF EXPRESSED
PERSON AND FULLY SELF-EXPRESSED
AND JOYFUL THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE
WHEN THINGS WERE NOT GOING AS HE
WOULD HAVE LIKED THEM TO GO.
HE STILL HAD THE CAPACITY TO SAY
OKAY, THAT'S NOT GOING SO WELL
BUT ALL THE REST OF MY LIFE, I
HAVE TO LIVE A GREAT JOY IN THE
MOMENT.
LET'S SPEAK OF THE MOMENT.
IT IS A JOYEST OCCASION THAT I
HAD THE CHANCE TO TALK TO YOU.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING ME
TO TALK ABOUT THIS GREAT MAN.
>> THANK YOU, RAFAEL.
MY PLEASURE.
