METROFOCUS: SEPTEMBER 10, 2019

September 11, 2019 at 5:30 am

Rats like hanging out in Harlem, on the Upper West Side and Bedford-Stuyvesant. Hot summer nights drive their passion for reproducing. So, what’s being done to stop this vermin explosion? Each year more than six thousand veterans die by suicide. We have the details on a program that enlists vets to save each other from themselves when adjusting to life back home. A major milestone for one of our city’s oldest and most important institutions. Find out how the New York Foundling is still helping children 150 years after it was founded. We take a short ferry ride from the tip of Manhattan to the north shore of Staten Island where we visit the National Lighthouse Museum.

Aired on September 10, 2019.

>>> TONIGHT ON METROFOCUS.
RATS AND THE CITY.
SOME OF NEW YORK'S WEALTHIEST
NEIGHBORHOODS ARE BEING OVERRUN
BY VERMIN.
WE LOOK AT THE PROBLEM AND
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS.
>>> WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION
DAY.
IN FOCUS, MEMBERS OF OUR ARMED
FORCES AND THE SUICIDE SPIKE.
>>> PLUS, THE NEW LEADER OF NEW
YORK'S REPUBLICAN PARTY, HE'LL
TELL US HOW HE PLANS TO SUCCEED
IN ONE OF THE BLUEST OF BLUE
STATES AND B HONORING ALL
BEACONS THAT WRING BRINK THOSE
AT SEA SAFELY.
WE'LL TRAVEL TO THE LIGHTHOUSE
MUSEUM.
THOSE STORIES AND MORE AT
METROFOCUS STARTS RIGHT NOW.

>>> THIS IS METROFOCUS.
WITH RAFAEL P. RAMON, JACK FORD
AND JENNA FLANNIGAN.

>> RATS.
YOU SEE THEM SCURRYING ALONG
SUBWAY TRACKS, FORAGING THROUGH
TRASH AND LINKERING IN DANK
CONDITIONS IN THE CITY.
BUT THE POPULATION THAT RANGES
ANYWHERE BETWEEN 250,000 TO
PERHAPS A MILLION, NEW YORKERS
HAVE HAD ENOUGH.
SO WHAT'S THE ANSWER FO FIXING
THE RAT PROBLEM?
HERE TO PROVIDE SOME ANSWERS, A
MAN OFTEN REFERRED TO AS THE RAT
CZAR AND EXPERT, ROBERT
CORRIGAN.
NICE TO HAVE YOU WITH US.
>> THANK YOU.
NICE TO BE HERE.
>> I JUST PUT OUT A NUMBER THAT
GOES FROM ANYWHERE AS LOW AS
250,000 TO PERHAPS MILLIONS.
DO WE KNOW?
DO WE HAVE ANY REAL HARD IDEA
HOW MANY IRIARTES THERE ARE IN
THE CITY?
>> YOU KNOW, WE DON'T.
IT WOULD BE VERY DIFFICULT TO
EVEN GET IN ON THAT.
THE RATS INB HABIT ALL KINDS OF
WHERE WE CAN'T COUNT.
SO IT'S VERY DIFFICULT.
THERE'S PROBABLY MILLIONS.
SOMEWHERE IN THE LOWER MILLIONS,
BUT WE'RE NOT SURE.
>> WHEN WE SAY THAT THE RAT
POPULATION IS GROWING, IS THAT
AN ECK DOE TALL OR ARE WE ABLE
TO REALLY IN SOME SCIENTIFIC
WAY, CONFIRM THAT YES, INDEED,
THE RAT POPULATION IS
INCREASING?
>> I THINK GROWING.
I SAY THAT FROM A COUPLE OF
DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES.
I MYSELF WAS AN EXTERMINATOR
BACK IN THE '70s.
I DID A LOT OF WORK IN
MANHATTAN.
I REMEMBER HOW MANY RAT JOBS I
DID.
BUT THESE DAYS AS A SCIENTIST, I
MEASURE RAT INCREASES BY
SPEAKING WITH MANY PROFESSIONALS
AROUND THE CITY.
I LOOK AT 311 DATA.
THE SIMPLIES THAT ARE PUCHLS
PURCHASED FOR RAT CONTROL.
IF YOU ADD IT UP, THE RATS ARE
IN FACT INCREASING, BUT THE
INTERESTING THING IS THAT IN
SOME NEIGHBORHOODS, THEY SEEM TO
BE DOWN.
PROBABLY BECAUSE WE ARE GETTING
A HANDLE ON IT LIKE THE BOROUGH
IN MANHATTAN.
>> SO NOT ACROSS THE BOARD.
>> NO.
>> WHY DO YOU THINK THE
INCREASES ARE TAKING PLACE?
>> WELL, YOU KNOW, IT'S
DIFFICULT.
THERE'S A LOT OF FACTORS THAT
INFLUENCE RAT POPULATIONS, BUT
THE PRIMARY FACTOR IS RATS
FOLLOW HUMANS.
SO WHERE HUMANS INCREASE AND
HUMAN POPULATIONS INCREASE AND
WITH OUR HUMANS COME OUR GARBAGE
AND CLUTTER AROUND DEBRIS AND
INFRASTRUCTURE REPAIRS.
SO THE RATS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF
WHERE EVER PEOPLE INCREASE, MANY
TIMES THEY'RE RIGHT BEHIND US.
>> WHY WOULD YOU THINK SOME
NEIGHB
NEIGHBORHOODS --
>> THE STUDY QUITE FRANKLY.
HOWEVER, I THINK THAT IF YOU
LOOK AT THOSE AREAS THAT ARE
SHOWING INCREASES B, THERE, TOO,
I THINK YOU'LL SEE AN INCREASE
IN DENSITY AND WITH THE PROBLEMS
THAT COME WITH DENSITY, IT'S
MORE DIFFICULT TO COLLECT TRASH
IN A TIMELY MANNER.
AS MANY CLUTTER, AS MORE AND
POPULATIONS PUT OUT THEIR TRASH
PILES AND JUNK AND SO FORTH.
>> IS THERE A SOCIOECONOMIC LINK
IN TERM OF NABLDS AND THE RISE
AND FALL OF THE RAT POPULATION?
>> I THINK THERE IS AND THERE'S
SOME GOOD POPULATION THAT
SUGGEST RATS TEND TO BE
ASSOCIATED IN MORE CASES WITH
POVERTY STRICKEN AREAS, WHICH
MAKES SENSE.
YOU KNOW IN POVERTY STRICKEN
NEIGHBORHOODS, YOU'RE NOT GOING
TO HAVE THE BEST BUILDINGS WITH
THE BEST FOUNDATIONS AND ALL THE
REPAIRS BEING DONE AND RATS NEED
VERY SMALL HOLES TO GET INTO THE
FOUNDATIONS THAT ARE WEARING
OVER TIME.
THOSE MAY BE LESS EXPENSIVE
PROPERTIES, SO O THERE'S MORE
HARBORAGE.
TWO, THERE IS WHERE PEOPLE ARE
SUBJECT TO POVERTY AND LOW
SOCIOECONOMIC CONDITIONS, THEY
MAY NOT BE ABLE THE TO AFFORD
THE SERVICES OF PROFESSIONAL
EXTERMINATORS, SO THEY DON'T
HAVE A REGULAR ROUTINE,
PROFESSIONAL COMING BY AND
HELPING TO KEEP THOSE NUMBERS IN
CHECK.
SO THERE ARE A LOT OF FACTORS.
YES, THERE'S PROBABLY MORE RATS
ASSOCIATED WITH POVERTY STRICKEN
AREAS.
>> THE LAST AREA I WANT TO TOUCH
ON WITH YOU IS WHAT CAN CAN WE
DO?
>> THAT'S THE KEY QUESTION
BECAUSE THAT'S THE MOST
IMPORTANT QUESTION.
YOU KNOW, THE THING FOR EVERYONE
TO KEEP IN MIND IS A RAT IS A
RELATIVELY LARGE MAMMAL.
ONE TO THREE OUNCES OF FOOD
EVERY SINGLE NIGHT SO IF THERE'S
A LOT OF RATS ON SOMEONE'S BLOCK
OR AROUND SOMEBODY'S PROPERTY,
THE FIRST THING THEY SHOULD ASK,
WHERE ARE THOSE RATS GETTING
THEIR DAILY NUTRITION AND HOW AM
I RESPONSIBLE?
PERHAPS AM I RESPONSIBLE?
IS THERE SOME OTHER FOOD SOURCE
THAT I NEED TO CHECK?
WHERE THERE'S RATS, USUALLY FOOD
AND WHAT CAN A RESIDENT DO IS
ASK THAT QUESTION, WHERE ARE
THEY GETTING FOOD AND CAN I DO
SOMETHING TO HELP CORRECT THAT.
>> LAST QUESTION FOR YOU, HOW
ABOUT -- WHAT CAN WE REALIST
CLICK EXPECT THE CITY TO DO TO
HELP COMBAT THIS.
>> WELL, FIRST THING TO KEEP IN
MIND AS A CITY WITH A STAFF,
THEY HAVE A TERRIFIC STAFF HERE
IN PEST CONTROL SERVICES, BUT
THIS IS MUCH BIGGER THAN ONE
AGENCY.
MILLIONS O RATS SPREAD FROM
EVERY SINGLE BOROUGH.
HOWEVER, THAT SAID, I THINK THE
CITY'S BEEN MAKING PRETTY
IMPRESSIVE MOVES FORWARD BECAUSE
THEY'RE ALLOCATING MONEY TOWARDS
SCIENCE.
FOR THE LAST, SIX, SEVEN YEAR,
MONEY HAS BEEN COMING TO THE
AGENCIES WHERE WE CAN STUDY DATA
AND THE SCIENCE OF RATS.
WHY ARE THEY IN CERTAIN
NEIGHBORHOODS, AND ONCE WE GET
THE SCIENCE TO GET A FULLER
PROFILE ON WHAT IS INVOLVED WITH
THESE RATS, THEN WE CAN ADDRESS
IT ARE WITH MORE EFFICIENT WAY,
YOU KNOW BUT THE CITY HAS TO
KEEP UP ITS CONSTANT
SURVEILLANCE, GOING UP AND DOWN
BLOCKS IN COMMERCIAL AND
RESIDENTIAL AREAS.
>> I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR SOME
REALLY GOOD INFORMATION AND
GREAT ADVICE AS TO HOW WE CAN
ALL PITCH IN TO HELP.
THANKS FOR SPENDING SOME TIME
WITH US.
>> THANKS FOR HAVING ME.
THANK YOU.

>>> A SOMBER STATISTIC.
ACCORDING TO THE U.S. DEPARTMENT
OF VETERANS AFFAIRS, EVERY DAY,
ABOUT 20 VETERANS DIE BY
SUICIDE.
A TRAGIC SITUATION.
HOWEVER, ONE ORGANIZATION IS
TAKING A BIG STEP TO COMBAT THIS
EPIDEMIC.
THE INDEPENDENT FUND IS STRIVING
TO EMPOWER VETERANS TO OVERCOME
PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL
WOUNDS AS A RESULT OF THEIR
TOURS OF DUTY.
BY TEAMING WITH THE DEPARTMENT
OF VETERANS AFFAIRS, THE FUND
HAS LAUNCHED OPERATION RESELL
YENSY, A PROGRAM WITH PROMISE
THAT THOSE WHO CAME HOME
SUFFERING FROM PTSD AND MENTAL
ILLNESS.
HERE WITH DETAILS ARE TWO
SOLDIERS WHO HAVE F JUST
COMPLETED THE PROGRAM.
VETERAN ARMY STAFF SERGEANT ALEX
AND MAJOR ADAM ARMSTRONG.
BOTH PARATROOPERS WITH BRAVO
COMPANY.
WELCOME TO THE PROGRAM.
>> THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME.
>> ABSOLUTELY.
FIRST, LET'S START OFF AND TALK
ABOUT WHAT IS OPERATION
RESILIENCY.
>> IT'S A JOINT VENTURE BETWEEN
THE INDEPENDENT FUND AND THE
DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS.
AND WHAT IT FOCUSES ON FOR
CONTEXT AS WE CAME OUT FOR
EXAMPLE DEPLOYED IN '09, '10 TO
AFGHANISTAN WAS A PRETTY ROUGH
TIME IN TERMS OF FIGHTING AND
COMBAT CASUALTIES.
THEN THE UNITS WERE REDEPLOYED
AND EVENTUALLY, EVERYBODY GOES
DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS.
SOME GET OUT, SOME GO TO OTHER
UNITS AND A SMALL AMOUNT STAY IN
THAT UNIT.
THE PARATROOPERS DON'T HAVE A
WHOLE LOT OF TIME TO REFLECT
UPON WHAT EXPERIENCES THEY JUST
HAD.
AND THE REASONS FOR WHY THEY HAD
THEM.
THEY GO ON WITH THEIR LIVES.
THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY, WE
THINK, POWERFUL THROUGH THE
HUMAN CONNECTION, THE BOND THEY
SHARE D BACK THEN A CHANCE TO
REVISIT THAT.
REFLECT ON IT.
PERHAPS UNDERSTAND IT A LITTLE
BIT BETTER THEN DEAL WITH OTHER
THINGS THAT THEY'VE BEEN DOLING
WITH IN THEIR LIVES FOR THE LAST
NINE YEARS.
>> WELL ALEX, WHAT WAS YOUR
EXPERIENCE LIKE.
>> THE FIRST DAY, IT WAS AMAZING
TO WATCH THE GUYS HOW AT THE
BEGINNING, THEY WERE RESERVED
AND CLOSED.
THE MINUTE SOMEBODY BROKE THE
ICE AND OPENED UP LIKE HEY, MAN,
I'VE BEEN STRUGGLING.
KIND OF JUST OPENED THE DOOR AND
EVERYBODY STARTED YOU KNOW,
OPENING UP AND TALKING ABOUT HOW
THEY HAVE BEEN STRUGGLING.
I THINK IT MADE THEM REALIZE
YOU'RE NOT WEAK FOR ADMITTING
YOU HAD SOME HARD TIMES.
AND THE OTHER PART I THINK IS
VERY IMPORTANT IS AS A WOUNDED
VETERAN WITH VISIBLE WOUNDS, WE
ARE VERY FORTUNATE TO GET A LOT
OF SUPPORT FROM THE COMMUNITY
BUT THE GUYS COMING HOME WITHOUT
VISIBLE WOUNDS, THEY GET OUT AND
KIND OF LOSE THEIR IDENTITY, IF
YOU WILL.
THEY DON'T GET THE THANK YOUS
AND HUGS BECAUSE THEY CAN'T
IDENTIFY THEM AND THEY WENT
THROUGH JUST AS MUCH STUFF IF
NOT SOME MORE STUFF.
SO IT'S REALLY AMAZING TO SEE AN
ORGANIZATION THAT'S ALSO
FOCUSING ON THE WOUNDED AS WELL
AS THE NONVISIBLE WOUNDED.
>> AND IS THAT REALLY THE
IMPORTANCE OF THIS
ORGANIZATION'S EXPERIENCE, TO
BREAK DOWN THOSE WALLS OF
PERHAPS ISOLATION THAT PEOPLE
MIGHT FEEL?
>> ABSOLUTELY CORRECT, MA'AM.
IT GETS DOWN SHARED VERSUS SAME
EXPERIENCE.
THERE'S VETERANS ALL OVER THE
COUNTRY.
HIGH CASUALTY RATES ARE NOT
UNIQUE, BUT THE ONLY ONES, THE
ONLY UNITS THESE GUYS YOU KNOW
EXPERIENCE THIS ONE WITH WERE
THE FOLKS THAT WERE IN THAT
UNIT.
SO THAT IS THE UNIQUE PART OF
THIS PROGRAM IS THAT IT BRINGS
TOGETHER THAT COMPANY WHERE THEY
FORM THOSE EXTREMELY STRONG
BONDS IN COMBAT AND NOW MAYBE
THAT ALLOWS THEM TO BE JUST A
LITTLE BIT MORE VULNERABLE
BECAUSE THE TRUST IS THERE.
THE HUMAN CONNECTION IS THERE
FROM WHAT THEY'VE ALREADY
SHARED.
SO THE TEAM GOT US THROUGH IN
THE DEPLOYMENT.
NOW THE TEAM CAN HELP TO GET US
THROUGH FOR THE REST OF OUR
LIVES.
>> NOW THIS FEELS INCREDIBLY
REVOLUTIONARY OF AN IDEA EVEN
THOUGH IT NECESSARILY SHOULDN'T
BE.
I'M KIND OF WONDERING IF THERE
WAS ANY PREVIOUS PROGRAMS THAT
WERE DRAWN ON TO CREATE
SOMETHING LIKE THIS OR IS THIS
BRAND-NEW?
>> WELL, I DON'T REALLY KNOW IF
THOSE PROGRAMS EXISTED.
THIS ONE CAME ABOUT BECAUSE OUR
GUYS WERE AT A FUNERAL FOR ONE
OF THE TWO SUICIDES THAT HAVE
HAPPENED SINCE.
AND WHEN THEY SAID HEY, WHEN'S
THE NEXT TIME WE'LL SEE EACH
OTHER, THERE WAS KIND OF A
SOMBER MOMENT AN REALIZATION
THAT THAT MIGHT BE THE NEXT
FUNERAL.
SO SARAH, THE CEO OF THE INDY
FUND, WAS AT THAT FUNERAL.
HER HUSBAND WAS AN AMPUTEE IN
OUR COMPANY.
AND YOU KNOW THAT'S THE IDEA
THAT THEN GREW UP TO BE
PARTNERED WITH THE VA TO HAVE
SUCH A MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCE FOR
THOSE GUYS AND HOPEFULLY FOR
MANY, MANY ORGANIZATIONS AFTER
OURS.
>> ALEX, WHEN IT COMES TO AS YOU
WERE SAYING, THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE
VISIBLE WOUNDS AND PEOPLE WHO
DON'T, WHAT IS IT THAT YOU FIND
WAS ONE OF THE MORE HEALING
EXPERIENCES OF BEING ABLE TO
SHARE WITH PEOPLE WHO DIDN'T
HAVE THE VISIBLE WOUNDS, BUT
ABLE TO STILL CONNECT WITH THEM
AND SAY I STILL UNDERSTAND WHAT
YOU'RE GOING THROUGH EVEN THOUGH
THE PUBLIC ISN'T OBVIOUSLY
SEEING IT?
>> YOU KNOW LIKE I SAID, THE
ONES WITH VISIBLE WOUNDS, WE'RE
VERY LUCKY TO HAVE THE
COMMUNITY, WHICH MAKES A HUGE
DIFFERENCE IN THE HEALING.
BUT YOU STILL ICE LATE YOURSELF
AND FACE YOUR INNER DEMONS.
SO FOR ME TO BE B ABLE TO OPEN
UP TO MY BROTHERS THAT I SERVED
WITH AND TELL THEM LOOK, MAN, I
WAS IN A REALLY TOUGH SPOT AND I
DIDN'T CALL YOU GUYS, SO WE NEED
TO GET BETTER AT THAT.
THE THOUGHT WAS VERY REWARDING
FOR ME.
BECAUSE A LOT OF GUYS, WE FOUND
OUT THAT WERE IN SPECTACULAR
SITUATIONS THAT ARE NOW SEEKING
HELP FROM IT.
>> IS THIS THE KIND OF
ORGANIZATION WHERE A LOT OF
TIMES, PEOPLE SAY WHEN SOMEONE
IS IN CRISIS THAT REALLY THE
ONLY PERSON WHO CAN REALLY HELP
THEM IS THEM.
IS THIS SOMETHING WHERE FAMILIES
CAN REACH OUT AND SAY WE HAVE A
RETURNING VETERAN AND THEY'RE
STRUGGLING OR IS IT SOMETHING
WHERE THAT VETERAN NEEDS TO TAKE
THAT FIRST STEP AND SAY YOU
KNOW, I WANT TO RECONNECT.
I NEED THIS CONNECTION AGAIN.
>> YES, MA'AM.
SO THE FOCUS OF THIS IS HAR
HARNESSING THE POWER OF THE
BOUND BOND OF THIS SMALL UNIT TO
ASSIST THE INDIVIDUAL AND
COLLECTIVE IN GETTING THROUGH
AND COPING WITH THOSE TOUGH
TIMES.
SO IF A UNIT WOULD LIKE TO BE A
PART OF THIS, A WAY THAT THAT
COULD HAPPEN IS BY THE COMMAND
TEAM OR SOMEBODY FROM THE UNIT
CONTACTING THE INDEPENDENT FUND
THROUGH THE INDEPENDENT FUND.ORG
OR VA TO SUBMIT A NOMINATION FOR
THEIR SMALL UNIT.
THEN THAT WILL BE LOOKED AT AND
BASED OFF THE QUALIFICATIONS
THAT KIND OF STRESS THAT THEY
HOPEFULLY WILL BE ABLE TO HAVE
THE SAME OPPORTUNITY.
>> AND ALEX, JUST WONDERING FOR
YOURSELF, IS THERE ANYTHING THAT
YOU WOULD SAY I GUESS ON A
POSITIVE NOTE THAT HAS D
DEFINITELY CHANGED FOR YOU ONCE
YOU'VE BEEN ABLE TO REESTABLISH
THESE CONNECTIONS?
>> JUST SEEING ALL THOSE GUYS
YOU KNOW, THEY SAID THE BEST
THERAPY IS LAUGHING AND WE LAUGH
SO MUCH OVER THE WEEKEND.
WE CRIED AT SOME POINTS FROM
LAUGHING SO HARD.
SO I THINK EVERYBODY AGAIN
REALIZING THAT THEY WEREN'T
GOING THROUGH ALL THIS STUFF
ALONE AND THEY WEREN'T WEAK FOR
HAVING THEIR EMOTIONS THEY WERE
GOING THROUGH.
SO YEAH, THE POSITIVE IS THAT
EVERYBODY OPENED UP AND REALIZED
IT'S OKAY.
TO NOT BE OKAY.
>> IS THIS SOMETHING THAT WOULD
BE SERVING ALL BRANCHES OF THE
MILITARY?
>> YES, ABSOLUTELY.
>> THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING
US.
THANK YOU FOR SHARING.
NOT ONLY YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH
US, BUT DEFINITELY WITHIN YOUR
UNIT AND MAKING SURE OTHER UNITS
HAVE THE ABILITY TO RECONNECT
WITH EACH OTHER.

>>> I'M MATT RYAN, MANAGING
EDITOR AND HOST OF NEW YORK NOW.
THE 2018 BLUE WAVE HIT
REPUBLICANS HARD.
THE PARTY HERE IN NEW YORK WAS
SWEPT ON THE STATEWIDE TICKET
ONCE AGAIN.
THEY SUFFERED SOME SURPRISING
DEFEATS IN RED CONGRESSIONAL
DISTRICTS AND LOST BADLY IN
SENATE RACES GIVING DEMOCRATS
TOTAL CONTROL IN ALBANY.
A LONG TIME PARTY CHAIR WAS
FORCED TO STEP ASIDE WHEN
WESTERN NEW YORK'S NICK
LANGWORTHY SECURED ENOUGH VOTES
TO TAKE OVER THE POSITION.
THE LONG TIME HEAD OF THE EERIE
COUNTY GOP HAS A LOT OF WORK TO
DO AS HE ACKNOWLEDGED WHEN WE
SAT DOWN WITH THEM.
>> NOWHERE TO GO BUT UP.
AND I THINK THE MOST CENT CNN
POLL THAT CAME OUT A COUPLE OF
WEEKS AGO TALKED ABOUT HOW NEW
YORKERS WANT BALANCE IN THEIR
GOVERNMENT.
AND YOU HAVE OVER 60% OF F
PEOPLE THAT SAID THEY DON'T,
THEY PREFER IT TO HAVE YOU KNOW,
AT LEAST ONE HOUSE LEGISLATURE.
ONE ARM OF GOVERNMENT TO BE IN
REPUBLICAN HANDS.
I THINK YOU'RE GOING TO SEE A
PENDULUM SWING.
MY JOB TO GET IT GOING IN THAT
DIRECTION AND I THINK WITH A NEW
ENERGY AND A NEW DIRECTION AND A
MORE AGGRESSIVE FORM OF
MESSAGING, WE'RE GOING TO DO
THAT.
>> HE WAS AN EARLY SUPPORTER OF
DONALD TRUMP.
F IN FACT, HE TRIED TO PERSUADE
HIM TO RUN FOR GOVERNOR IN 2014.
BEFORE THE REAL ESTATE MOGUL SET
HIS SIGHTS ON THE OVAL OFFICE.
HE GIVES THE PRESIDENT HIGH
MARKS HALFWAY THROUGH HIS TERM.
>> I JUST LOOK AT THE ECONOMY.
IT'S ABSOLUTELY ON FIRE.
WE'VE GOT RECORD LOW EMPLOYMENTS
UNDER EVERY SOCIOECONOMIC
SEGMENT OF OUR POPULATION.
I MEAN THE STOCK MARKET AND
PEOPLE'S 401(k)s HAS SOARED.
HE'S ACTUALLY YOU KNOW HOLDING
THE WORLD A TAX THAT OTHER
COUNTRIES ARE ACTUALLY STARTS TO
PAY FOR THINGS.
NOT JUST AMERICA PAYING THE BILL
FOR EVERYBODY ELSE.
THE PRESIDENT'S DOING EXACTLY
WHAT HE SAID HE WAS GOING TO DO
WHEN HE RAN FOR PRESIDENT.
I THINK THAT'S WHAT THE MEDIA
HAS SUCH A HARD TIME WITH.
SOMEONE THAT'S ACTUALLY
FOLLOWING THROUGH IN GOVERNING
THE WAY THEY SAID THEY WOULD.
>> HE SAID ONE OF THE REASONS
REPUBLICANS SUFFERED LOSSES LAST
NOVEMBER WAS BECAUSE TRUMP
WASN'T ON TOP OF THE TICKETS.
ONE OF THE CONGRESSIONAL
DISTRICTS THE GOP CHAIR THINKS
CAN FLIP BACK IS IN STATEN
ISLAND AND
BROOKLYN.
WHICH MAX ROSE UPSET LAST YEAR.
THE REPUBLICANS HAVE A STRONG
CANDIDATE RUNNING NEXT YEAR IN
CURRENT ASSEMBLYWOMAN AND FORMER
MAYORAL CANDIDATE.
>> I JUST SPENT FIVE DAYS WITH
NICOLE IN ISRAEL AS WE TOURED
THE COUNTRY TOGETHER.
SHE'S RUNNING VERY HARD,
AGGRESSIVELY AND SHE'S YOU KNOW
RAISING RESOURCES.
SHE'S BEEN ELEVATED IN SOME OF
THE NATIONAL REPUBLICAN RANKINGS
AS A SEAT TO WATCH AND I THINK
THEY CALL IT YOUNG GUNS IS THE
DESIGNATION HER CANDIDACY WAS
GIVEREN, WHICH IS SET BY KEVIN
McCARTHY TRK REPUBLICAN LEADER
OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
THERE'S A LOT OF PEOPLE
NATIONALLY WATCHING THAT RACE.
SHE'S CERTAINLY A STRONG ETHNIC
WOMAN AND TO HAVE WE NEED HER TO
BE SUCCESSFUL TO RESTORE A
REPUBLICAN SEAT IN CONGRESS
WITHIN THE FIVER BOROUGHS OF THE
CITY OF NEW YORK.
I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT
FOR US TO HAVE A FEDERAL
OFFICIAL FROM THE FIVE BOROUGHS
FOR PARTY IDENTITY PURPOSES, BUT
SHE'S JUST A FAR MORE EFFECTIVE
ADVOCATE FOR STATEN ISLAND AND
BROOKLYN THAN MAX ROSE.
>> AND LANGWORTHY ISN'T JUST
THINKING SHORT-TERM HERE.
HE HAS HIS EYES SET ON THE C
CAPITOL WHERE CUOMO SAYS HE
PLANS TO RUN IN 2022.
>> WE MEET ONE CUOMO AND WE'RE
GOING TO BEAT ANOTHER ONE.
THIS GOVERNOR IS A BULLY.
HE GOVERNS THROUGH INTIMIDATION
AND AS I TALK ED ABOUT EARLIER
TODAY, I MEAN WE HAVE A CULTURE
OF PAY TO PLAY THAT'S PERMEATED
HIS ADMINISTRATION FOR THE LAST
DECADE.
BETWEEN THAT AND THE LEASH THIS
LEGISLATURE IS NOW FORCING ON
THIS GOVERNOR UNDER HIS WATCH,
ISSUES LIKE DRIVER'S LICENSES
FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.
ISSUES LIKE GJERE ATTIC PAROLE.
THE WAY WE'RE SEEING POLICE
OFFICERS TREATED IN THE STREETS.
YOU HAVE A DEEVOLUTION OF NEW
YORK.
THERE ARE STILL PEOPLE ON THE
VAST SILENT MAJORITY OF THIS
STATE ARE PEOPLE THAT RESPECT
THE RULE OF LAW.
RESPECT LAW ENFORCEMENT.
AND YOU DON'T SEE THAT, THE
PEOPLE IN THEIR GOVERNMENT
HAVING THEIR BACK.
AND I, I BELIEVE THAT YOU KNOW,
THIS GOVERNOR YOU KNOW THINKS
HE'S IMPERVIOUS TO SHELF LIFE.
BUT WE'RE READY FOR A NEW YORK
COMEBACK WHICH STARTS WITH
COMMON SENSE.
WE'RE OUT THERE LOOKING ACTIVELY
FOR THE NEXT REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR
OF THIS STATE BECAUSE THE ONLY
WAY TO CHANGE NEW YORK IS TO
CHANGE GOVERNORS.
>> WE'LL SEE WHAT GAINS
REPUBLICANS MAKE IN 2019 AND
VARIOUS COUNTY EXECUTIVE RACES
ACROSS THE STATE, BUT NO DOUBT
THE FIRST BIG TEST OF LAN
LANGWORTHY'S LEADERSHIP WILL
COME NEXT NOVEMBER AT THE POLLS.
I'M MATT RYAN.
>> THERE'S A NEW MUSEUM IN TOWN
WITH AN OLD FAMILIAR FEEL.
THE NEW DESTINATION AT THE END
OF THE STATEN ISLAND FERRY.
THE NEW OLD HOME OF THE NATIONAL
LIGHTHOUSE MUSEUM.
WNET PRESIDENT DR. BILL BAKER
TAKES US ON A TOUR AND EXPLORES
OUR MARITIME HERITAGE.
>> THIS IS THE HEART OF THE
HARBOR.
RIGHT IN THE CENTER OF THINGS,
YOU HAVE TO IMAGINE A SHIP
COMING ACROSS THE FLICK TLIK AND
THEN CRASHING ON ONE OF THE
REEFS OUT IN THE HARBOR.
LIGHTHOUSES HAVEN'T BEEN BUILT
AND THE ENTIRE COUNTRY AND THE
ENTIRE WORLD.
THAT'S THE REASON WHY
LIGHTHOUSES ARE ARE SO
IMPORTANT.
YOU HAVE OVER 600 IN THE COUNTRY
AND 15,000 IN THE WORLD.
PEOPLE WANT THAT HISTORY, WE
WANT TO SAVE THAT HISTORY.
MANY OF THEM ARE BEING
REPURPOSED.
AND THE MUSEUM HERE IS PUT
TOGETHER TO PRESERVE AND EDUCATE
FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.
>> THIS WAS THE HOME OF THE U.S.
LIGHTHOUSE DEPOT.
FROM 1864 TO 1939.
>> WHAT THE DEPOT WAS WAS
ANYTHING FROM A LIGHTHOUSE
KEEPER IN AMERICA NEEDED.
WAS ESSENTIALLY MADE HERE
ONSIGHT.
BROUGHT HERE TO BE INSPECTED
THEN SHIPPED OUT NATIONWIDE.
SO WE'RE NOT TALKING ABOUT A
REGIONAL DEPOT, EVEN THOUGH IT
DID FUNCTION THAT WAY.
WE'RE TALKING ABOUT NATIONAL
DEPOT THAT SERVICED AND
DELIVERED SUPPLIES NATIONALLY TO
ALL LIGHTHOUSES MANY AMERICA.
>> ADMINISTRATORS WORKED HERE.
THE KEEP ERS WERE FILLED AND TH
ARCHITECTS WERE DESIGNING LIGHTS
HERE RIGHT IN THE ADMINISTRATION
BUILDING.
THE LENSES CAME IN FROM FRANCE
AND ENGLAND WERE BROUGHT HERE TO
THE SITE.
ASSEMBLED THEN DISASSEMBLED AND
SENT THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.
THIS WAS A WAREHOUSE FOR ALL THE
LENSES COMING INTO THE COUNTRY
ALSO.
>> THE ONE INTERESTING WORKER
HERE THAT WE KNOW WHO SORT OF
LIVED ON STATEN ISLAND AND
WORKED HERE WAS JUSTICE.
HE WAS IMPORTANT BECAUSE HE
PATENTED A LOT OF THE OIL LAMPS
THAT WENT INSIDE THE LENSES.
INTRODUCING NEW OIL AND IT WAS
HIS JOB TO MAKE IT WORK SO HE
WAS A PROLIFIC PATENTOR.
>> WE CREATED EDUCATION HERE
GIVE YOU A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF
WHAT LIGHTHOUSES AND THE HISTORY
OF LIGHTHOUSES ARE.
BUT YOU ALSO FIND A TIMELINE OF
LIGHTHOUSES.
YOU'LL FIND HISTORY OF THE
PURPOSE.
AND ALSO HISTORY ABOUT THE SIGHT
THAT FWINS BACK TO INDIAN
FORWARD.
YOU ALWAYS FIND THE HISTORY OF
WHAT HAPPENED ON THE SITE OF THE
DURING THE U.S. LIGHTHOUSE
SERVICE GENERAL DEPOT.
STORIES ABOUT THE KEEPERS.
>> NOW I AM LIGHTHOUSE NUT.
SO MUCH OF A A NUT THAT I
MAINTAIN AND CARE FOR THIS
LIGHTHOUSE.
THE HENRY ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE IN
NOVA SCOTIA.
BUT I'M NOTHING COMPARED TO WILL
FRED.
A MAN WHO HAS TRAVELED THE WORLD
LOOKING AT LIGHTHOUSES.
HE'S BEEN TO 2500 OF THEM.
I WONDER WHY.
>> WHEN I WAS 14 OR 15, I
DELIVERED CAMERA AND I WAS IN
THE CAMP MEETING IN GERMANY AND
I SAW MAKE THE FIRST PHOTO OF
THE LIGHT SHIP.
LIGHT SHIP WAS LIGHT SHIP HERE.
LATER WAS A CLEAR SHIP.
NOW I HAVE SEEN MORE THAN 250
WORLDWIDE.
USA, CLOSE TO 700.
CANADA, CLOSE TO 550 AND
AUSTRALIA, SOUTH AFTERCAR
ACCIDENT BUT I WANT TO GO TO
ASIA AND GO TO SCANDINAVIA.
AND I'M ALL THE WORKING WITH THE
STORY ABOUT LIGHTHOUSES IN MY
LIFE.
BUT IT TAKES YEARS.
BECAUSE I'M OFTEN NOT AT HOME.
>> WE ARE NOW ALREADY BRINGING,
MANY PEOPLE COMING FROM ALL OVER
THE WORLD AND WE HAVE A
WONDERFUL MAP SHOWING WHERE
PEOPLE ARE COMING FROM SO WE ASK
THEM TO PUT A PIN IN.
YOU'LL BE AMAZED AT WHO'S COMING
AND WE'RE JUST GETTING STARTED.
WE DO LIGHTHOUSE BOAT TOURS AND
LECTURES.
WE ARE NOW ABLE TO BRING IN
CHILDREN.
TO VISIT THE MUSEUM WHICH WE'RE
EXCITED ABOUT.
AND WE'RE GROWING.
WE'RE OPEN EVERY DAY EXCEPT
MONDAY.
FROM 11:00 TO 5:00 AND SUMMER
AND THE WINTER, 11:00 TO 4:00.
PEOPLE ARE COMING ALREADY AND A
THEY'RE VERY EXCITED THEY FOUND
THIS HISTORY AND APPRECIATE IT.
