TONIGHT ON 'METROFOCUS,' CONFRONTING THE WORLD'S OLDEST PROFESSION.

IN A MOMENT, A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT A QUEENS SEX TRAFFICKING COURT LOCATED IN THE HEART OF THAT BOROUGH'S MASSAGE PARLOR INDUSTRY.

FIND OUT HOW LAW ENFORCEMENT AND A NUMBER OF SUPPORTIVE AGENCIES ARE WORKING TOGETHER TO CHANGE THE WAY WOMEN ARE PROSECUTED FOR PROSTITUTION.

JACKIE ROBINSON MAY HAVE BEEN THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN TO PLAY IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL, BUT WHAT ABOUT THOSE HE LEFT BEHIND IN THE NEGRO LEAGUE?

TONIGHT THEY TELL THEIR STORIES.

> MEET A MAN WHO SPENT 31 DAYS UNDERWATER IN THE NAME OF SCIENCE.

FABIENNE COOS TOE TELLS US HOW HIS FAMILY IS CARING FOR OUR OCEANS AND GIVES US INSIGHTS NOOSES OTHER LEGENDS OF THE DEEP.

THOSE STORIES AND MORE AS 'METROFOCUS' STARTS RIGHT NOW.

THIS IS 'METROFOCUS' WITH RAFAEL PI ROMAN, JACK FORD, AND JENNA FLANAGAN.

'METROFOCUS' IS MADE POSSIBLE BY -- JAMES AND MERRYL TISCH, SUE AND EDGAR WACHENHEIM III, THE SYLVIA A. AND SIMON B. POYTA PROGRAMING ENDOWMENT TO FIGHT ANTI-SEMITISM.

BERNARD AND IRENE SCHWARTZ, ROSALIND P. WALTER, BARBARA HOPE ZUCKERBERG, AND BY -- CORPORATE FUNDING FOR 'METROFOCUS' WAS PROVIDED BY MUTUAL OF AMERICA, YOUR RETIREMENT COMPANY.

AND BY PSE&G, SERVING CUSTOMERS, STRENGTHENING THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY AND INVESTING IN THE FUTURE.

GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO 'METROFOCUS.'

I'M RAFAEL PI ROMAN.

BLOWN UP IS A FASCINATING DOCUMENTARY WHICH PROFILES THE WOMEN WHO RUN AND COME BEFORE THE QUEENS HUMAN TRAFFICKING INTERVENTION COURT.

THE FIRST PROBLEM SOLVING COURT IN THE COUNTRY ATTEMPTING TO REDRESS THE WAY WOMEN AND YOUNG GIRLS DID ARRESTED FOR PROSTITUTION ARE SHUFFLED THROUGH OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM.

WITH UNPARALLELED ACCESS TO THE COURT, THE FILM CAP CAPTURES WHAT IT IS LIKE FOR THESE DEFENDANTS OVERWHELMING UNDOCUMENTED ASIAN IMMIGRANTS AND WOMEN OF COLOR TO GO THROUGH THE COMPLEX CRIMINAL PROCEEDINGS.

HERE'S A LOOK.

THIS CHARGE IS A DEPORTABLE OFF OFFENSE.

SHE WAS IN CRISIS AND HE JUST LIKE SWOOPED IN.

HE SLEEPS WITH HER PASSPORT WITH, HER I.D., HER SOCIAL SECURITY CARD.

I CAN'T SAY THE THAT EVERY WOMAN WHO COMES THROUGH THE COURT IS GOING TO GET THE EXACT HELP THEY NEED.

I HAVE A BOYFRIEND.

WAIT, WHAT?

WE ARE GOING TO GRANT AN EARLY --

YEA.

CALLED BLOWING UP WHEN YOU LEAVE A PIMP.

I BLEW UP AND I WENT HOME.

AND JOINING US NOW IS DIRECTOR OF BLOWNUP.

WELCOME TO THE PROGRAM.

THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME RAFAEL.

RIGHT FROM THE START, YOU TAKE US INTO THE MIDDLE OF THIS QUEENS COURT WITHOUT NARRATION, WITHOUT EXPLANATION AND WE'RE THERE WITH PEOPLE THAT WE DON'T KNOW WHO THEY ARE.

I WAS WONDERING IF THAT WAS INTENTIONAL, IF YOU WANTED TO GET TO US FEEL A LITTLE BIT OF WHAT THE WOMEN DEFENDANTS WHO ARE ABOUT TO FACE THE COURT ARE FEELING.

YEAH, YOU KNOW, WHEN I FIRST EXPERIENCED THIS COURTROOM THE FIRST TIME THAT I OBSERVED IT AT WORK, I ALSO FELT THAT WAY AND I WAS JUST KNOW, TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT ARE DO THESE TERMS MEAN WHO, ARE THESE PEOPLE, WHO IS DOING WHAT, WHO IS A DEFENDANT.

SO IT IS A PLACE THAT IS A BUREAUCRATIC PLACE THAT IS VERY CONFUSING.

SO I WANT ODD GIVE VIEWERS AND AUDIENCES A FEELING OF WHAT THAT MUST FEEL LIKE TO COME INTO A PLACE LIKE THIS.

I EXPECTED THE STEREOTYPES, THE JADED JUDGE, THE JADED PROSECUTOR, THE OVERWORKED PUBLIC DEFENDANT TRYING TO COP A PLEA.

INSTEAD, YOU FIND A JUDGE AND PROSECUTOR TREATING THE DEFENDANTS AS HUMAN BEINGS IN DISTRESS RATHER THAN CRIMINALS.

YOU SEE THE LAWYERS AND SOCIAL COUNSELORS TREATING THEM LIKE FAMILY.

WHAT KIND OF COURT IS THIS?

IT'S A PROBLEM SOLVING COURT, THE FIRST COURT OF ITS KIND IN OUR NATION TRYING TO CHANGE THE WAY WOMEN WHO ARE ARRESTED FOR PROSTITUTION ARE PROSECUTED.

AND I WAS ATTRACTED, AS WELL TO THIS SPACE BECAUSE OF THE DEEP HUMANITY AT THE CORE OF THIS INSTITUTION.

YOU KNOW, WE ALL HAVE INSTITUTIONS SURROUNDING US IN EVERY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM IN OUR LIVES.

I THINK AT THE CORE OF THESE THERE ARE PEOPLE RUNNING THEM AND IF PEOPLE ARE REALLY GOOD AND TRYING TO CHANGE THE WAY THAT THESE INSTITUTIONS ARE RUN, IT'S A WHOLE DIFFERENT KIND OF PLACE.

HAD YOU DID YOU GET THE ACCESS TO THE COURT AND TO THE PEOPLE WHO YOU WOULD ASSUME WOULD NOT WANT TO BE FLIPPED?

SO MAKING A FILM LIKE THIS AS YOU CAN IMAGINE, IS VERY CHALLENGING.

YEAH.

NO ONE WANTED TO BE IN THE FILM.

NO ONE WANTED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FILM.

SO IT TOOK US ABOUT TEN MONTHS OF OBSERVATION AND DEVELOPMENT AND RESEARCH AND BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH EVERYONE IN THE COURT BEFORE WE WERE EVEN ALLOWED TO BRING CAMERAS INTO THE SPACE.

AND THEN ONCE CAMERAS WERE BROUGHT IN, IT WASN'T LIKE WE WERE GIVEN CARTE BLANCHE TO FILM EVERYTHING WE WANTED TO.

EVERY MORNING, I WOULD MAKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT IN ENGLISH AND MANDARIN LETTING THEM NODE WHAT WE WERE DOING HERE AND THEY HAD A CHOICE WHETHER OR NOT THEY WANTED TO PARTICIPATE.

AND MOST PEOPLE SAID NO.

SO FOR US, A GOOD DAY OUT OF 90 CASES WAS ONE OR TWO WOMEN SAYING YES.

WE'RE DEALING WITH A SUBJECT MATTER THAT HAS BEEN EXTREMELY STEREOTYPED AND MISREPRESENTED IN THE MEDIA.

THEY ARE WORDS THAT ARE THROWN ON THESE WOMEN AND THEY R SQUARED AND FEARFUL OF THE REPERCUSSIONS OF THESE WORDS.

ALL THESE WOMEN WHO RUN THE COURT AND WORK IN THE COURT, THEY WORK TOGETHER VERY WELL.

YOU CAN SEE IT IN THE FILM TO HELP THE DEFENDANTS.

I GET THE SENSE THEY DON'T ALL AGREE WITH EACH OTHER.

AT ONE TIME YOU SEE I LIE ZAL TALKING TO CANDY AND TELLING HER IF YOU GET BACK TO THE LIFE, MAKE SURE YOU DO IT IN A WAY THAT YOU WON'T GET ARRESTED.

NO JUDGMENT HERE.

I CAN'T SEE THE JUDGE SAYING THAT OR SOME OF THE PROSECUTORS SAYING THAT.

AM I GETTING THAT RIGHT?

YOU KNOW, WHEN THAT HAPPENED WHEN I WAS FILMING THAT, I WAS ALSO SHOCKED SHE WAS SAYING THAT.

I WAS LIKE WOW, I WONDER HOW EVERYONE ELSE IS GOING TO FEEL ABOUT THIS.

EVERYONE'S JUST DOING THE BEST JOB THEY CAN GIVEN THEIR ROLE IN THE SYSTEM BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY, NO MATTER WHAT THEIR DILEMMA IS OR HOW THEY FEEL WHAT'S GOING ON FOR THE WOMEN AND GIRLS, THEIR BOTTOM LINE SHARED GOAL IS TO HELP THESE WOMEN IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM THEY CAN.

AT THE END OF THE FILM IT'S A DISTURBING SCENE WHEN WE SEE AN I.C.E. AGENTS ENTER THE COURT IN ORDER TO ARREST SOME OF THESE WOMEN TO LATER DEPORT THEM.

HOW CAN THE COURT CONTINUE TO SURVIVE OR EXIST AS A SAFE SPACE FOR THESE WOMEN WHEN THEY CAN'T PROTECT THESE WOMEN FROM I.C.E.

AGENTS THAT WANT TO THE TAKE THEM AND DEPORT THEM?

YEAH, THAT MOMENT IN THE FILMING PROCESS IS REALLY, REALLY SCARY AND CHALLENGING.

AND YOU REALLY FEEL THE FRAGILITY OF THIS SMALLIE COSYSTEM THAT THEY CREATED IN THIS SMALL CORNER OF NEW YORK.

WHETHER OR NOT IT CAN SURVIVE OR NOT, I DON'T KNOW.

THE COURT IS STILL THERE?

THIS COURT STILL EXISTS AND THE WOMEN ARE STILL BEING ARRESTED AND I.C.E. STILL EXISTS AND TRUMP IS STILL IN POWER.

SO ALL THESE WOMEN WHO ARE IN THE COURT CAN DO IS CONTINUE TO DO THEIR BEST, GIVEN THE MANY EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES THAT MAKING THIS WHOLE SYSTEM SO CHALLENGING FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS.

STEPHANIE, IT'S AN AMAZING FILM.

A WONDERFUL FILM.

YOU TOLD ME SOMETHING THAT SURPRISED ME WHICH IS WOMEN ARE COMING TO SEE IT BUT NOT THAT MANY MEN.

I CAN'T UNDERSTAND THAT BECAUSE THIS IS CERTAINLY NOT A WOMEN'S FILM BUT FOR ALL HUMAN BEINGS.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING IT AND JOINING US.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING US.

FOR INFORMATION ON HOW STUCK WATCH 'BLOWN UP' VISIT OUR WEBSITE AT METROFOCUS.ORG.

THE MYSTERIES THAT LURK BENEATH THE SURFACE OF THE SEA RIVAL THOSE IN OUTER SPACE AND THE MAN WHO FIRST TOOK US THERE WAS JACQUES COUSTEAU.

THE WORLD FAMOUS EXPLORE'S GRAND CHILDREN SA SEEN AND FABIENNE SET OUT TO UNCOVER TALES FROM THE OCEAN THAT HAVE REMAINED A SECRET.

HERE'S A PREVIEW OF THEIR NEW SCIENCE CHANNEL SEARS CALLED 'LEGENDS OF THE DEEP.'

DO YOU SEE THAT?

WHAT IS THAT?

IT'S HUGE.

FOR GENERATIONS, THE NAME COUSTEAU HAS BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH A SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE AND DISCOVERY.

OUR GRANDFATHER PIONEERED THE EARLIEST EFFORTS IN SCUBA TECHNOLOGY GIVING THE WORLD ITS FIRST GLIMPSE AT THE VAST UNDERWATER UNIVERSE.

OUR GRANDFATHER DEVOTED HIS LIFE TO OCEAN EXPLORATION, AND NOW WE ARE PICKING UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF.

USING BRAND-NEW TECHNOLOGIES, WE ARE CONTINUING OUR GRANDFATHER'S MISSION TO UNCOVER THE SECRETS OF SOME OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST OCEAN MYSTERIES.

AND HERE TO TELL US MORE ABOUT THIS NEW SERIES AND ABOUT HIS FAMILY'S MISSION TO EDUCATE AND PROMOTE OCEAN CONSERVATION IS UNDERWATER ADVENTURER FABIENNE ACCUSE STOW.

IT'S A PLEASURE TO BE WITH YOU.

START WITH THE SERIES.

THEN I WANT TO TALK MORE ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND ITS LEGACY.

SO YOU LOOK AT THE SERIES AND THIS IS A TRUE ADVENTURE SERIES.

YES.

AND YOU AND I WERE TALKING A LITTLE BIT BEFOREHAND.

YOU MENTIONED IT ALMOST GOES BACK TO WHAT YOUR GRANDFATHER WAS FIRST DOING, THE NOTION OF ADVENTURE.

SO TELL ME ABOUT THE DECISIONS YOU AND YOUR SISTER SAY LET'S PICK UP THAT MOUNTAINOF ADVENTURE AND DO THIS.

HOW DID IT COME ABOUT?

MY GRANDFATHER'S DONE, MY GRANDPARENTS AND THEIR CREW HAVE GONE AROUND THE WORLD FOR OVER 50 YEARS.

IT WENT FROM PURE ADVENTURE AND EXPLORATION TO ADVENTURE AND EXPLORATION WITH A CONSERVATION MESS AND AS TIME WENT ON.

WE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE NICE TO DIVE BACK INTO THE ESSENCE OF OCEAN EXPLORATION IN A WAY THAT IS IMPASSIONING TO JUST ABOUT EVERYONE OUT THERE.

YOU KNOW, IT GOES BACK TO WHAT MY GRANDFATHER USED TO SAY WHICH IS PEOPLE PROTECT WHAT THEY LOVE.

THEY LOVE WHAT THEY UNDERSTAND AND UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY'RE TAUGHT.

WE WANT TO REACH OUT TO THE AN AUDIENCE THAT DOESN'T OWDSCONSERVATION TYPE OF PROGRAG BUT MAY BE INTERESTED IN THE ADVENTURE PART IT SO WE CAN REEL THEM IN AND SHOW HOW MAGICAL THIS UNDERWATER WORLD IS.

YOU HAVE A NUMBER OF LOCATIONS HERE.

YES.

WHERE YOU GO SEEKING ADVENTURE AND DISCOVERY.

WHAT WAS THE DISCOVERY THAT YOU WERE LOOKING FOR?

THERE'S SO MANY MYSTERIES OUT THERE THE OCEAN'S BARELY BEEN EXPLORED AT ALL.

WE'VE EXPLORED LESS THAN 5% OF OUR OCEAN WORLD TO DATE.

IT'S 3.4 BILLION CUBIC KILOMETERS OF VOLUME.

THERE'S A LOT OF SPACE OUT THERE.

THERE ARE A LOT OF MYSTERIES FROM SHIP WRECKS AND LEGENDS.

THAT REALLY IS THE ESSENCE OF T BIT OF THE UNDERWATER DETECTIVE TO TRY AND FIGURE OUT SOME OF THESE MYSTERIES SUCH AS ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS EVER UFO SIGHTINGS BY A WHOLE BUNCH OF PEOPLE WHICH WAS SUBSTANTIATED BY THE FOLKS OVER IN NOVA SCOTIA.

WE WANTED TO GO AND SEE WHAT THIS WAS REALLY ABOUT TO SHIP WRECKS, THE ONE IN CYPRUS OR OFF OF CYPRUS THAT WAS MYSTERIOUSLY CAPSIZES AND SURGE.

THERE WERE A LOT OF RUMORS WITH REGARD TO A PLO AND ARMS DEALS AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

SO GOING INTO AND PENETRATING THERE TO GO AND LOOK FOR CLUES AS TO WHAT POSSIBLY COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO THE BLUE HOLE AND GOING AND DIVING INTO THOSE LEGENDS.

I MEAN LITERALLY LEGENDS FROM THE MINDS ON UP TO MODERN DAY OF SEA MONSTERS AND WHAT PEOPLE REALLY HAD SEEN IN THIS MOST ICONIC OF PLACES IN THE OCEAN.

WHEN YOU WATCH IT, IT'S A GREAT SENSE OF ADVENTURE FOR THOSE OF US, THE VIEWERS BECAUSE WE DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO FIND.

UH-HUH.

DID YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT YOU WERE GOING TO FIND?

I'LL QUOTE WHAT MY GRANDFATHER USED TO SAY.

IF I KNEW WHAT I WAS GOING TO FIND, I WOULDN'T BOTHER GOING.

THAT'S PART OF THE ESSENCE OF BEING AN ADVENTURER IS GOING OUT THERE AND REALLY SEEKING OUT NEW AND INTERESTING ADVENTURES, THINGS THAT MAY HOPEFULLY TAP THEIZE NOT ONLY THE VIEWER BUT ALSO HOPEFULLY ENRICH OUR LIVES IN SOME WAY.

WHEN YOU WATCH IT, YOU SEE YOURSELF AND YOUR SISTER DIVING.

YES.

BUT I DON'T KNOW THAT WE GET A SENSE OF HOW BIG A TEAM WAS INVOLVED TO GET THIS DONE.

GIVE US A BETTER SENSE OF THAT.

I'M SO GLAD THAT YOU TOUCHED ON THAT BECAUSE WHEN YOU SEE ON CAMERA IS REALLY A FRACTION OF 1% OF WHAT GUESS ON TO MAKE AN EXPEDITION POSSIBLE.

THERE'S AN ENTIRE TEAM BEHIND IT FROM THE FILM CREW TO THE CREW ON THE BOATS, LOGISTICS, SO ON AND SO FORTH.

AND REALLY THE PEOPLE IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA MAY TRANSPORT YOU THROUGH THE ESSENCE OF WHAT THE STORY IS.

BUT SOMETHING LIKE A CYPRUS OR BLUE HOLE TAKES A LOT OF PREPARATION, A LOT OF DEDICATION FROM AN AMAZING TEAM THAT IS ABLE TO HAVE US DO WHAT WE DO.

TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE THINGS YOU'VE 0 DONE HERE.

THESE ARE FASCINATING.

ONE THING THAT I WAS ASTONISHED BY HAD, IN 2014 WHEN YOU DID A DIVE FOR 31 DAYS.

WHAT WAS THE GENESIS OF THAT?

WHY DID YOU WANT TO DO THAT?

WELL, WHEN MY GRANDFATHER STARTED OUT, THE TOOLS NECESSARY FOR OCEAN EXPLORATION JUST WEREN'T THERE.

IT WAS EITHER RELEGATED TO HARD HAT DIVERS LOOKING FOR SPONGES OR A HANDFUL OF NAVY DIVERS WHO WERE PLACING MINES OR WHAT HAVE YOU IN THE OCEAN.

THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE WORLD KNEW NOTHING ABOUT WHAT WAS BELOW THAT BLUE VENEER.

SO HE HAD TO BUILD SOME OF THOSE EQUIPMENT INCLUDING THE REGULATOR, SCUBA AS WE ALL KNOW IT TODAY, SO THAT HE COULD FLY FREE UNDERWATER TO GO AND FILM WHAT HE WANTED TO FILM.

THE FIRST UNDERWATER CAMERA HOUSINGS AND SUBMARINES WERE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH THE LIST GOES ON AND ON.

ZE BUILT SOME OF THE FIRST UNDERWATER HABITATS TO SEE IF HUMAN BEING COZ LIVE AND WORK UNDERWATER FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME ON THE CONTINENTAL SHELF.

SO I ALWAYS FOUND THAT FASCINATING HAVING A HOUSE UNDERWATER, A LABORATORY UNDERWATER AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA TO BE ABLE TO BE GO OUT AND EXPLORE AND COME BACK TO THAT HOUSE RATHER THAN HAVING TO GO BACK TO THE SURFACE WAS ALWAYS A FASCINATION TO ME.

I WAS FURTHER ENCOURAGED, IF YOU WILL, BY A FAMILY FRIEND BY THE NAME OF DR. SYLVIA EARL WHO YOU MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE HEARD OF.

SHE'S A FABULOUS OCEAN HERO AND IN 2012, I WENT TO GO VISIT HER AT THE WORLD'S ONLY REMAINING UNDERSEA LABORATORY CALLED SQUARIOUS.

I THOUGHT WOW, WHY AREN'T WE DOING MORE OF THESE.

2014 COMES AROUND AND THIS WAS THE ONE AND ONLY TIME I WAS FACED WITH THE REALITY THAT THEY WERE GOING TO PULL OUT SO IT'S NOW OR NEVER TO GO AND EXPERIENCE WHAT IT'S LIKE AND TO HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF UNDERWATER HABITATS FOR OCEAN EXPLORATION.

SO I TOOK A CRAZY TEAM ALONG WITH MYSELF WHO BELIEVED IN THE IDEA OF SPENDING 31 DAYS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA TO NOT ONLY HIGHLIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF OCEAN EXPLORATION AND SCIENCE, BUT ALSO BRING IT BACK TO THE WORLD LIVE FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA.

FOR 31 DAYS.

HAPPENED TO BE THE LONGEST ANYONE'S BEEN AT AQUARIUS.

IT WAS CERTAINLY NOT AN EASY ENDEAVOR.

BUT IT WAS VERY FULFILLING.

I'VE GOT SAY AT THE END OF THE 31 DAYS, I WAS PROBABLY THE ONE THAT WANTED TO STAY DOWN THE MOST FOR ANOTHER 31 DAYS IF I COULD.

REALLY?

IT WAS THAT ENLIGHTENING AND THAT EVEN TO SOME EXTENT COMFORTABLE FOR YOU TO HAVE THIS BECOME YOUR HABITAT?

THE OCEAN'S -- IT'S MY WORLD.

I FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE UNDER THE SEA THAN I DO ON LAND.

AND FOR ME, I MEAN NEW YORK CITY IS A WONDERFUL PLACE.

FULL OF LIFE AND MOVEMENT AND NOISE AND EVERYTHING ELSE.

BUT REALLY WHEN YOU DIVE INTO THE UNDERWATER CITIES, THE CORAL REEF, AND YOU SEE HOW AMAZING THAT FIREWORKS DISPLAY OF LIFE IS AND HOW SIMILAR IT IS TO LIFE ON LAND BUT JUST WITH DIFFERENT AQUATIC CREATURES YOU HAVE THE HOSPITALS, RESTAURANTS, YOU HAVE THE DOCTORS, YOU HAVE ALL THESE THINGS GOING ON, THE HOUSING, ET CETERA, ET CETERA IN THIS UNDERWATER CORAL REEF.

IT'S JUST A FASCINATING PLACE AND TO BE ABLE TO SPEND PRESUMABLY UNLIMITED AMOUNTS OF TIME DOWN THERE FROM A HABITAT IS A GIFT OF TIME THAT ANY SCUBA DIVER WORE GLADLY HAVE.

IT'S ONE OF MY BIGGEST FRUSTRATIONS AS A SCUBA DIVER IS HAVING TO GO BACK TO THE SURFACE.

IF SOMEONE SAID TO YOU HOW WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR FAMILY TO BE REMEMBERED, WHAT WOULD YOUR ANSWER BE?

HOPEFULLY INSPIRATIONAL TO BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE IMPORTANCE OF OUR OCEAN AS THE LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM THAT IT IS.

THE UNIVERSAL CONNECTOR, IF YOU WILL, THE REASON WHY WE EXIST.

OUR NATURAL RESOURCE BANK ACCOUNT.

ALL THOSE THINGS COMBINED INTO WHAT MAKES US US.

HOPEFULLY, IT'S INSPIRATIONAL IN A WAY THAT WE'LL PAY BETTER ATTENTION TO OUR OCEAN ENVIRONMENT.

ONE THAT WILL BE BETTER SHEPHERDS OF OR STEWARDS OF AND ONE THAT WE'LL BE PROUD OF TO GIVE BACK TO OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS THE WAY WE'VE TAKEN MORE GRANTED.

YOU KNOW, AT THE END OF THE DAY, OUR MISSION IS NOT COMPLETE.

WE ARE FACING SOME VERY GRAVE ISSUES IN THE OCEAN WORLD.

ONES THAT WE'RE JUST BEGINNING TO FLOURISH OR I SHOULD SAY SHOW THEMSELVES WHEN MY GRANDFATHER'S CAREER WAS ENDING.

OR HIS LIFE WAS ENDING.

AND HOPEFULLY, WE'VE PICKED UP THE PHILOSOPHY AND THE MISSION WHERE HE AND MY PARENTS HAVE LEFT OFF SO THAT WE CAN CONTINUE TO INSPIRE THOSE NEXT GENERATIONS TO DO BETTER THAN WE HAVE.

I CAN SAY FOR ALL THAT YOU AND THE FAMILY HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL.

SO FABIENNE, THANK YOU FOR SPENDING SOME TIME WITH US.

FANTASTIC.

REMEMBER ONE THING, ONLY THE IMPOSSIBLE MISSIONS SUCCEED.

WHAT A GREAT MANTRA.

THAT'S GREAT.

LEGENDS OF THE DEEP PREMIERES SUNDAY NIGHTS AT 9:00 P.M. ON SCIENCE CHANNEL.

TO STREAM THE FULL SEASON, VISIT OUR WEBSITE @METROFOCUS.ORG.

THEY WERE PIONEERS IN A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN PLAYING AMERICA'S FAVORITE PASTIME.

BASEBALL LEGEND JACKIE ROBINSON BROKE BASEBALL'S COLOR BARRIER IN 1947 WHEN HE WENT TO PLAY FOR THE BROOKLYN DODGERS.

NOW A NEW DOCUMENTARY 'THE OTHER BOYS OF SUMMER' INTRODUCES US TO THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE NEGRO LEAGUE.

EVEN AS THEY FACED RACISM AND SEGREGATION, THEY STILL FOUND THE PASSION TO PLAY.

HERE'S A PREVIEW.

EVERY YEAR, BASEBALL SEASON COMES ALONG, I WAS READY TO GO.

THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT THAT GAME OF BASEBALL THAT JUST GETS INTO YOUR BLOODY GUESS.

.

I SAY SEGREGATION NOW, SEGREGATION TOMORROW, AND SEGREGATION FOREVER.

I RECEIVED A BASEBALL SCHOLARSHIP TO NORTH CAROLINA A & T STATE UNIVERSITY IN GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA.

THAT WAS A RUDE AWAKENING FOR ME BECAUSE HAD I NEVER BEEN SOUTH BEFORE.

JOINING ME NOW IS THE FILM'S DIRECTOR LAUREN MEYER.

LAUREN, WELCOME TO THE PROGRAM.

THANK YOU.

I HEAR THESE STORIES OF WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO PLAY IN A SEGREGATED LEAGUE OF AMERICA'S FAVORITE PASTIME WAS SO FASCINATING.

WHAT DREW YOU TO THE FILM?

I WAS INTERESTED IN PURSUING THE STORY BECAUSE TO ME RACISM AND SEGREGATION NEVER MADE SENSE.

CLEARLY WE KNOW IT EXISTS.

YOU LEARN ABOUT IT GROWING UP IN SCHOOL BUT THE CONCEPT OF WHAT MADE SOMEBODY LEAVE A CERTAIN BASED ON COLOR OF THEIR SKIN SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO SIT SOMEWHERE OR EAT SOMEWHERE OR TRAVEL TO A CERTAIN LOCATION, THAT TO ME NEVER MADE SENSE AS A WHITE WOMAN, I CAN'T WALK IN THEIR SHOES.

SO WHAT I WANTED TO DO WAS EXPLORE WHAT THAT WOULD BE LIKE TO PURSUE YOUR DREAM IN I SEGREGATED AMERICA.

WHAT WAS IT THAT YOU WERE FINDING FROM SOME OF THESE PLAYERS THAT DROVE THEM TO CONTINUE DESPITE ALL THE OBSTACLES?

IT'S INTERESTING.

IT WAS THEIR PASSION FOR THE SORT OF BASEBALL.

THEY WILL PLAYED BECAUSE THEY LOVED THE GAME.

THEY DIDN'T SET OUT TO CHANGE AMERICA.

THEY DIDN'T SET OUT TO INTEGRATE BASEBALL.

WHAT THEY DID WAS THEY WANTED TO PURSUE THEIR DREAMS AND THEIR DREAM HAPPENED TO BE BASEBALL.

SO IT WAS VERY INTERESTING THAT EVERY SINGLE PLAYER I INTERVIEWED I ASKED THEM DIDN'T IT MAKE YOU ANGRY EVERYTHING YOU HAD TO GO THROUGH AND WAY YOU WERE TREATED.

100% OF THEM RESPOND THE SAME WAY.

THEY ALL SAID NO, IT'S JUST THE WAY THINGS WERE.

IT WAS A DIFFERENT TIME.

SO THEIR LACK OF BITTERNESS AND ANGER IS THE THING THAT STOOD OUT THE MOST TO ME.

IF THE NEGRO LEAGUE SKILL LEVEL WAS EQUAL TO MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL.

SO WHAT THEY UNDERSTOOD WAS THAT THEY WERE PLAYING AT THE TOP LEVEL.

NOW, THEY WEREN'T VERY HAPPY ABOUT HAVING TO PLAY IN THEIR OWN LEAGUE BUT THE ROBE THE LEAGUE EXISTED WAS BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO PLAY THE GAME.

SO EVEN THOUGH THEY WILL WERE EXCLUDED FROM MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL, THEY WOULD STILL PLAY IN STADIUMS, FOR EXAMPLE, THEY WOULD PLAY AT YANKEE STADIUM ON SUNDAYS SOMETIMES.

ONLY WHEN THE YANKEES WERE OUT OF TOWN ON A SUNDAY WERE THEY ALLOWED TO PLAY BUT THEY COULD DRAW 20,000, 30,000 PEOPLE TO YANKEE STADIUM.

SO THEY HAD THE EXPERIENCE OF PLAYING BIG-TIME BASEBALL BUT IT DEFINITELY WAS NOT THE SAME AS PLAYING IN THE MAJORS.

SOME OF THE BIGGEST STARS CAME FROM THE NEGRO LEAGUES NOT JUST JACKIE ROBINSON, SATCHEL PAGE, ET CETERA.

WHAT WAS THE REACTION ONCE THAT STARTED HAPPENING, ONCE THE NEGRO LEAGUES STARTED TO DETERIORATE?

WHEN JACKIE WAS SIGNED BY THE DONORS THAT WAS THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF THE NEGRO LEAGUES.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL STARTED HAND PICKING THE TOP PLAYERS.

IT DIMINISHED THE COMPETITIVENESS OF THE NEGRO LEAGUES NOT BASED ON THEIR PASSION TO PLAY BUT BASED ON THE TOP PLAYERS WERE NOW PLAYING FOR MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL.

BECAUSE OF THAT, A LOT OF THE FANS THEN WOULD NO LONGER NEED TO GO WATCH THE NEGRO LEAGUE GAMES BECAUSE THEIR FAVORITE PLAYER WAS PLAYING FOR THE DODGERS OR CLEVELAND.

THIS WAS ABOUT THE MEN AND WOMEN.

TELL ME WHAT ROLE THAT WOMEN PLAYED IN THE NEGRO LEAGUES.

THERE WERE THREE WOMEN WHO PLAYED BRIEFLY BASEBALL IN THE NEGRO LEAGUES.

I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO THE INTERVIEW THE LAST SURVIVING PLAYER, MAMIE PEANUT JOHNSON.

SHE PLAYED FOR THE INDIANAPOLIS CLOWNS AND WHELZ I INTERVIEWED HER, SHE SHARED A REALLY INTERESTING STORY WITH ME.

SHE WAS ABOUT 18 YEARS OLD AND PLAYING ON A SEMI PRO TEAM AT THE TIME AND SHE SAW A LITTLE AD IN THE PAPER FOR THEY WERE LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO TRY OUT FOR THE ALL-AMERICAN GIRLS PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL LEAGUE.

SHE AND HER BEST FRIEND GOT ON A BUS AND TRAVELED TO THE TRYOUT.

WHEN SHE GOT THERE, SHE WAS DENIED BECAUSE OF THE COLOR OF HER SKIN AND THERE WASN'T ANYTHING SHE COULD DO.

SO SHE GOT BACK ON THE BUS AND WENT BACK TO WASHINGTON, D.C.

EITHER THAT DAY OR NEXT DAY, A SCOUT WAS AT A GAME AND APPROACHED HER AFTER THE GAME AND SAID HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY FOR THE INDIANAPOLIS CLOWNS.

BECAUSE SHE WAS DENIED ACCESS TO PLAY EMPTY WOMEN'S LEAGUE, SHE WAS GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY THE IN THE NEGRO LEAGUES.

WHAT'S THE BIG TAKE AWAY THAT YOU WOULD WANT PEOPLE TO COME AWAY FROM THIS FILM WITH?

THE REASON I'M GETTING THIS FILM OUT THERE, I WANT TO PRESERVE THE LEGACY BECAUSE THESE WERE TRUE CIVIL RIGHTS TRAILBLAZER, NOT JUST ATHLETES, I WANT TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER.

IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TORN PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PEOPLE TO COME TOGETHER AND WATCH SOMETHING THAT CAN RELATE TO THINGS HAPPENING TODAY AND LASTLY, I REALLY WANT TO INSPIRE PEOPLE.

I THINK THAT THESE STORIES OFTEN A GREAT ALTERNATIVE TO WHAT WE'RE BOMBARDED WITH DAILY.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS FILM AND BOB ALL TO COLLECT THESE STORIES.

THANKS FOR HAVING ME.
