>>> ONE OF NEW YORK'S MOST
UNIQUE BROADCASTS AND
PERFORMANCE VENUES, THE GREEN
SPACE RUN BY WNYC AND WQXR HAS
BEEN CHALLENGING THE THOUGHTS
AND IDEAS OF NEW YORKERS FOR THE
LAST DECADE.
EXPLORING MEDIUMS RANGING FROM
POLITICS TO ENTERTAINMENT TO
CLASSICAL MUSIC AND POETRY, IT'S
BEEN A HUB FOR NOT ONLY LIVE
PERFORMANCE AND CELEBRATION, BUT
ALSO CHANGE.
AND TO CELEBRATE TEN YEARS, THE
SPACE IS LAUNCHING A SERIES OF
SPECIAL CONCERTS, TALKS, PODCAST
TAPINGS AND EXHIBITS TO
REPRESENT IT'S WIDE VARIETY OF
PROGRAMMING.
JOINING US FOR MORE IS JENNIFER,
THE CURATOR OF THE GREEN SPACE.
NICE TO HAVE YOU WITH US.
>> THANKS FOR HAVING ME.
>> I WANT TO GET INTO SOME OF
THINGS YOU'VE DONE IN THE PAST
AND WHAT YOU HAVE PLANNED, BUT
LET'S START WITH THE CREATION OF
THE GREEN SPACE.
HOW DID IT COME ABOUT?
>> IT WAS PART OF NEW YORK
RADIO.
SO TEN YEARS AGO WHEN WE WERE
LOOKING TO MOVE OUT OF THE
MUNICIPAL BUILDING WHERE WE HAD
OFFICE AND STUDIOS FOR A LONG
TIME INTO OUR OWN SPACE, IT WAS
IMPORTANT FOR US TO BRING THE
PUBLIC INTO PUBLIC RADIO AND
HAVE AN OPEN AUDIENCE STUDIO.
WE FOUND SPACE IN HUDSON SQUARE,
WHICH YOU MIGHT THINK OF AS
NORTHWEST SOHO.
AND WE DO HAVE THIS STREET LEVEL
STUDIO AND IN THE TEN YEARS
WE'VE BEEN THERE THE
NEIGHBORHOOD HAS BLOSSOMED
AROUND US THERE AND WE'VE BEEN
MAKING A MIX OF LIVE JOURNALISM
AND ART FOR ALL NEW YORKERS.
AND EVERYONE BROUGHT TOGETHER
JUST BY THE POWER OF
STORYTELLING AND THROUGH STORY
THAT WE CAN CREATE ART AND WE
CAN CREATE A MORE BEAUTIFUL
WORLD AROUND US.
>> TALK ABOUT THE PHYSICAL SPACE
THERE.
WHAT YOU WERE ABLE TO CREATE.
>> WELL, IT'S ON THE STREET
LEVEL AND IT IS OPEN ON TO THE
STREET WITH WINDOWS ON ALL
SIDES.
SO EVERY TIME WE'RE DOING A
SHOW, PEOPLE WALKING BY CAN LOOK
IN AND SEE US AND BE A PART OF
THAT.
NOW, OF COURSE IF YOU WANT TO
COME IN, YOU DO NEED TO GET A
TICKET.
>> RIGHT.
>> BUT WE KEEP OUR TICKETS
REALLY ACCESSIBLE TOO.
AND MOST EVERYTHING WE DO IS
LESS THAN $20.
A LOT OF OUR EVENTS ARE FREE.
AND WE ALSO LIVE STREAM ALMOST
EVERY PROGRAM ONLINE AND PUT
THAT VIDEO ON DID HEEMAND ON OU
WEBSITE LATER.
YOU CAN WALK BY AND SEE US, YOU
CAN COME IN AND SEE US AND CHECK
US OUT ONLINE AND SOMETIMES YOU
CAN HEAR US ON THE RADIO.
>> LET ME TALK ABOUT SOME OF OF
THE THINGS YOU HAVE PLANNED.
LET'S TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE
THINGS YOU HAVE PLANNED HERE.
I WAS STRUCK BY ONE OF THEM,
THIS IS SOMETHING THAT PROBABLY
DIDN'T EXIST TEN YEARS AGO, AND
THAT WAS THE NOTION OF PODCASTS.
TELL ME ABOUT SOME OF THE
PODCASTS THAT YOU PLAN DO.
>> YES.
SO, LIKE I SAID, WE'RE PART OF
NEW YORK PUBLIC RADIO SO WE'RE
PART OF WNYC, CLASSICAL MUSIC,
WE HAVE A CASTING STUDIO, WNYC
STUDIOS AND GOTH MYTH.
SO WE DRAW INSPIRATION FROM ALL
OF THESE THINGS.
AND WE'RE A REAL HUB FOR
PODCASTING, WHICH YOU'RE RIGHT,
WAS NOT PART OF THE PICTURE FOR
ANYBODY TEN YEARS AGO.
BUT IT'S BLOSSOMED.
SO WE DO PODCAST EVENTS EVERY
WOO ECONOMY IN THE GREEN SPACE.
WE DO LIVE TAPINGS, PILOTS,
LISTENING SESSIONS, WORKSHOPS
WHERE PEOPLE CAN COME IN AND
LEARN.
WE WERE THE INCUBATOR FOR WNYC
STUDIOS CALLED WORK IT WHICH IS
BY AND FOR WOMEN IN PODCASTING.
SO NOW THAT HAS MOVED ON AND UP.
WE'RE IN OUR FIFTH YEAR AND WE
DO THAT AT DIFFERENT VENUES IN
NEW YORK AND LOS ANGELES.
THAT DRAWS THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE
EACH TIME WE DO IT.
BUT WE DO STILL KEEP THAT SPIRIT
IN THE GREEN SPACE.
WE HAVE AN EVENT COMING UP THIS
MONTH WITH KYLE WRITE AND
ALLISON STEWART WHO ARE HOSTS ON
WNYC AND ONE OF OUR REPORTERS
WILL DO A FREE WORKSHOP ON HOW
DO A GREAT AUDIO VIDEO.
SO PEOPLE CAN KEEP LEARNING FROM
LIKE RADIO LABS DOWN TO
INDEPENDENTS DIAGNOSIS THEIR
FIRST PROGRAM.
>> INTERESTING.
I SAW RECENTLY A STATISTIC THAT
SAID IN THE LAST YEAR THE
ESTIMATED SOME 50 MILLION PEOPLE
IN THE U.S. LISTEN TO A PODCAST.
THIS GROWTH HAS BEEN EXPONENTIAL
HERE.
WHAT YOU'RE DOING THERE
BRINGS -- IT GIVES THEM NOT ONLY
A CHANCE TO LISTEN TO ONE BUT
WATCH A PODCAST BEING PERFORMED.
>> ABSOLUTELY.
AND BE A PART OF IT ABOUT THE WE
ALWAYS SAY IN THE GREEN SPACE
THAT WE DON'T DO A SPECTATOR
SPORT HERE.
IT'S AN INVITATION, IT MAY BE A
WARNING THAT
SO WHETHER THAT'S BY ACTUALLY
GET AILIN
GETTING A CHANCE TO ASK A
QUESTION OR BY LAUGHING AND
CLAPPING AND ACC I PART OF THAT
RECORDING, EVERYTHING WE DO IS
BRINGING THE AUDIENCE INTO THOSE
THINGS RATHER THAN LISTENING TO
IT IN THEIR EARBUDS.
>> 1 OF THE CLASSICAL MUSAL
EVENTS, CHAMMER MUSIC CONCERTS,
THESE THINGS AGAIN WHERE FOLKS
CAN COME IN, GET A TICKET OR
WHATEVER THE ARRANGEMENT MIGHT
BE AND PARTICIPATE?
>> ABSOLUTELY.
WE HAVE FREE CLASSICAL MUSIC
CONCERTS EVERY MONTH AS WELL AS
TICKETED ONES.
IT'S NOT JUST CLASSICAL.
WE'VE HAD JANELLE MONAE AND
OTHERS.
BUT WE GET SOME EXCELLENT
CLASS
CLASSICAL MUSICIANS COMING
THROUGH.
AND IN THE GREEN SPACE YOU CAN
BE NO MORE THAN 30 FEET AWAY,
WE'RE SO INTIMATE IT'S ONLY 125
SEATS.
AND THEN, AS I SAID, NOT A
SPECTATOR SPORT.
WA LONG TOOK QUESTIONS FROM THE
AUDIENCE INCLUDING SOME LITTLE
KIDS WHO WERE LEARNING FROM HIS
PIANO BOOKS AT HOME.
>> YOU ALSO DO -- YOU DO
CONVERSATIONS, MAYBE THAT'S THE
BEST WAY TO CHARACTERIZE IT.
WHAT IS SORT OF THE DRIVING
FORCE BEHIND THIS NOTION OF
LET'S BRING SOME FOLKS IN TO
HAVE A CONVERSATION AND LET'S
ALLOW SOME OTHER FOLKS TO LISTEN
IN ON THIS?
>> WELL, WE SEE OUR ROLE AS
BEING A SPACE WHERE WE CAN REMIX
THE VOICES OF NEW YORK CITY SO
THAT THE POWERFUL AND THE
POWERLESS CAN BE HEARD EQUALLY
TOGETHER IN THE CONVERSATIONS
THAT WE HAVE.
SO THERE'S SOMETHING THAT
HAPPENS LIVE THAT YOU DON'T GET
IN A CLOSED STUDIO WHERE THERE'S
A DIFFERENT KIND OF SPOHN NAY
ITTY BECAUSE PEOPLE AREN'T
SCRIPTED.
THERE'S VULNERABILITIES BECAUSE
YOU'RE NOT GOING TO GET THAT
EDIT LATER AND THERE'S A WAY YOU
CAN BRING PEOPLE INTO THE
PROCESS THAT CAN MAKE THE
CONVERSATION HAPPEN.
WE'RE NOT A LECTURE BOOK TOUR
KIND OF STOP, WE'RE ABOUT THAT
DIALOGUE AND PUTTING THAT PUBLIC
IN PUBLIC MEDIA.
IT'S JUST SO IMPORTANT FOR THAT
TO BE A TWO-WAY KIND OF
CONVERSATION.
SO IF YOU HEAR THAT WE HAVE
ETHA
ETHAN HAWK CALMI COMING TO THE
GREEN SPACE, HE'S COMING TO KICK
OFF CONVERSATIONS ABOUT RACE AND
IDENTITY.
AND WE'VE HAD KEVIN BACON COME
THROUGH AND AT SOME POINT PULL A
WAD OF CASH OUT OF HIS WALLET
BECAUSE HE WAS OPENING UP ABOUT
HOW HE SPENDS MONEY AND WHAT HE
THINKS ABOUT FINANCIALLY NOT
JUST AS AN ACTOR AND ARTIST.
>> THESE ARE THINGS THAT YOU
DON'T HEAR USUALLY IN THEIR
INTERVIEWS.
>> YES.
WE THINK LIAR JOURNALISTS.
WE'RE LOOKING FOR NEW AND
LOOKING TO SURPRISE THE
AUDIENCE.
>> WELL, IF FOLKS OUT THERE
DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE GREEN
SPACE, THEY SHOULD AND I THINK
AFTER THIS CONVERSATION I'M SURE
A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE SAYING, WOW,
THAT SOUNDS FASCINATING, I WANT
TO MAKE SURE I MAKE A LITTLE
JOURNEY.
>> I HOPE SO.
>> DOWN TO THIS GREAT FACILITY
FOR THESE GREAT EVENTS.
JENNIFER, THANKS FOR SPENDING
TIME WITH US AND GOOD LUCK IN
THE NEXT TEN YEARS.
>> THANK YOU.
>> YOU BE WELL.
