METROFOCUS: APRIL 3, 2019

Out of 895 slots to attend prestigious Stuyvesant High School, only 7 Black and 21 Hispanic students were accepted. Why? A deep dive into the racial divide that exists in New York’s specialized schools and to look for solutions. “The World’s Most Wanted Animal” is one you’ve probably never heard of. Nature Executive Producer Fred Kaufman is here with the heartbreaking details and preview of the “Plight Of The Pangolin”. Carole King made “the earth move” under our feet and wove a “Tapestry” of tales in her music. Now, actress Chilina Kennedy channels the songstress as the latest actress to fill her shoes in Broadway’s “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical”.

> TONIGHT ON 'METROFOCUS.'

SEGREGATION IN NEW YORK CITY'S ELITE SPECIALIZED HIGH SCHOOLS.

STUYVESANT, HIGH SCHOOL.

IN A MOMENT A PARENT PAINTS THE PICTURE AND OFFERS SOLUTIONS ON HOW TO CHANGE THEM.

THEN NATURE EXPLORES THE PLIGHT OF THE PENGUIN, ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST INTELLIGENT AND MOST VULNERABLE ANIMALS.

PLUS CAROL KING MAKES THE EARTH MOVEAR UNDER OUR FEET ON BROADW.

CHILINA KENNEDY JOINS US.

THOSE STORIES AND MORE AS 'METROFOCUS' STARTS RIGHT NOW.

THIS IS 'METROFOCUS,' WITH RAFAEL PI ROMAN, JACK FORD AND JENNA FLANAGAN.

'METROFOCUS' IS MADE POSSIBLE BY.

JA .

GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO 'METROFOCUS.'

I'M JACK FORD.

WHEN IT COMES TO GETTING INTO NEW YORK CITY'S EIGHT SPECIALIZED HIGH SCHOOLS, QUESTIONS HAVE BEEN RAISED WHETHER EVERY STUDENT INDEED HAS A FAIR SHOT.

STUYVESANT HIGH SCHOOL, OFTEN CONSIDERED THE CITY'S MOST SELECTIVE AND PRESTIGIOUS OF ALL OF ITS PUBLIC HIGHS.

BUT HERE IS THE RUB.

OUT OF 895 OPEN FRESHMAN SLOTS AVAILABLE FOR INCOMING STUDENT, ONLY 7 AFRICAN AMERICAN AND 21 HISPANIC STUDENTS WERE SELECTED FOR ACCEPTANCE.

CRITICS SAY THE FHSAP OR SPECIALIZED HIGH SCHOOL ADMISSION TEST IS BLAME.

ARE THERE OTHER FACTORS AND OTHER SOLUTIONS?

WE'LL HEAR INSIGHTS.

IS CHILINA ADAMS.

AUTHOR OF AMONG OTHER BOOKS, WE'RE DELIGHTED TO HAVE YOU.

ZL THANK YOU.

CERTAINLY SOMEONE WHO'S STUDY ALL THIS AND LIVED THROUGH THEM.

WE'LL TALK YOUR OWN FAMILY'S EXPERIENCES IN ALL THIS.

LET ME ASK YOU TO START FOR FOLKS WHO MIGHT NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH THIS TEST.

EXPLAIN WHAT IT IS AND HOW IT WORKS WITH REGARD TO THIS SELECTION PROCESS.

THE SPECIALIZED HIGH SCHOOL ADMISSIONS TEST, SHSAT IS A TEST KIDS TAKE IN OCTOBER OF THEIR 8th GRADE YEAR IN ORDER TO APPLY TO ONE OF THE SPECIALIZED PUBLIC NEW YORK CITY HIGH SCHOOLS.

WHAT HAPPENS IS ABOUT 30,000 KIDS TAKE THE TEST.

AND THEN THEY TAKE THEIR SCORE AND THEY RANK THEMLOGICAL LITERALLY FROM NUMBER 1 TO NUMBER 30,000 WITH OBVIOUSLY A LOT OF TIES.

AND THEN ON THE DAY THE KIDS HAVE TAKEN THE TEST, THEY HAVE RANKED THE EIGHT SCHOOLS IN THE ORDER THEY PREFER.

SO THEY HAVE SOME ELEMENT OF CONTRIBUTION TO THE DECISION SAYING THIS IS MY ORDER.

AND NOT EVERYBODY CHOOSES THE SAME SCHOOL.

YOU MENTION STUYVESANT IS CONSIDERED THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS BUT THE FACTOR OF THE MARTTER I IF YOU ARE A KID THAT LIVES IN THE BOTTOM OF BROOKLYN, IT MAKES A DINS ON THE GEOGRAPHIC PIECE.

DIFFERENT NUMBERS OF STUDENTS.

DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES.

IT IS NOT LIKE EVERYONE GREASE THIS IS THAT RANK ORDER OF THEM.

SO THE KIDS WHEN THEY TAKE THE TEST THEY RANK THE ORDER THEY PREFER OF THE SCHOOLS.

THEY DON'T HAVE TO RANK ALL EIGHT.

AND THEN AN ALGORITHM BASICALLY PULLS THE FIRST KID.

THE KID WHO HAS THE HIGHEST SCORE.

AND IT SAYS WHAT IS THIS KID'S FIRST CHOICE?

STUYVESANT.

OKAY HE'S GOING TO STUYVESANT.

THEN TWO, THREE, FOUR, FIVE.

PULL THE NUMBER 500th KID.

WHAT IS HIS FIRST CHOICE.

BRONX SCIENCE.

OKAY HE'S GOING BRONX SIGN.

THE NUMBER 1,000 KID NAME.

STUYVESANT IS FULL.

WHAT'S HIS SECOND CHOICE?

BRONX SCIENCE.

HE'S GOING TO BRONX SCIENCE AND SO ON DOWN THE LIST UNTIL ALL THE SLOTS IN EVERY SCHOOL ARE FILLED.

SO AM I CORRECT THAT'S THE ABSOLUTE DETERMINING FACTOR FOR WHERE THEY GO?

THIS IS NOT LIKE COLLEGE APPLICATIONS WHERE THEY WILL SAY OKAY LET'S LOOK AT WHAT THEY DID IN SCHOOL.

WHERE ARE THEY IN THE DRAMA CLUB?

YOU ARE 100% CORRECT.

SO THAT NUMBER.

THAT'S IT.

NOTHING ELSE MATTERS.

YOUR GRADES DON'T MATTER.

STATE TEST SCORES DON'T MATTER.

ATTENDANCE.

EXTRACURRICULARS.

PORTFOLIO.

NONE OF THAT MATTERS.

THE ONLY EIGHT SCHOOLS IN THE CITY THAT ADMIT THAT WAY ARE THE SHSAT SCHOOLS AND THE SHSAT IS THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS SO THERE ARE SOME 400 HIGH SCHOOLS IN NEW YORK CITY.

AND ABOUT 700 PROGRAMS WITHIN THEM.

WITHIN THOSE.

AND AM I CORRECT THAT THERE ARE SOME OTHER SCHOOLS THAT ARE SELECTIVE IN SOME WAY, SHAPE OR FORM.

YES ABOUT --

AND WHAT DO THEY LOOK TO IN TERMS OF FACTORS.

ABOUT 130 SCHOOLS ARE WHAT'S CALLED SCREEN SCHOOLS.

EITHER STAND ALONE SCREEN SCHOOLS OR SCREENED PROGRAMS WITHIN OTHER SCHOOLS.

THEY DO LOOK AT GRADES.

THEY DO LOOK AT STATE TEST SCORES.

THEY DO LOOK AT ATTENDANCE.

SOME OF THEM WILL ASK THE KIDS TO SUBMIT A WRITING SAMPLE.

SOME OF THEM WILL HAVE THEM WRITE TO A PROMPT.

SOME OF THEM HAVE THEIR OWN TEST.

SOME OF THEM HAVE AN INTERVIEW AND SOME OF THEM REVIEW PORTFOLIOS.

AND SOME ALSO HAVE A PERFORMING ARTS COMPONENT.

SO THESE ARE SCREENED SCHOOLS.

THEY ARE SEPARATE FROM THE SHSAT SCHOOLS.

YEAH.

NOW I'VE MENTIONED THERE ARE SOME CONCERNS EXPRESSED ABOUT THIS TEST.

THE MAYOR HAS ESSENTIALLY SAID THIS IS UNFAIR.

WE WANT TO DO WITH IT --

-- GRADUATED --

TRAZ THAT IS AN INTERESTING OBSERVATION.

AND YOU WROTE A VERY INTERESTING ARTICLE WHERE YOU SAID ESSENTIALLY LOOK, WE'RE KILLING THE MESSENGER HERE.

WHY DO YOU THEN THINK -- OR DISAGREE I THINK FAIR TO SAY WITH THE POSITION OF THE PEOPLE WHO WHO ARE SAYING WE NEED TO THROW THIS TEST OUT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE MORE FAIR AND OUR STUDENTS HAVE BETTER OPPORTUNITIES?

WELL FIRST OF ALL ONCE AGAIN LOOK LET'S LOOK AT THE NUMBERS.

EIGHT SHSAT SCHOOLS.

130 SCREENED SCHOOLS.

400 GENERAL HIGH SCHOOLS.

FIRST WE'RE JUST FOCUSING ON A TINY SLIVER OF SCHOOLS THAT AFFECT A VERY SMALL PERCENTAGE OF THE POPULATION.

SECOND, THE MAYOR IS TRYING TO CHANGE ADMISSIONS TO THE SHSAT, WHICH HE CANNOT DO ON HIS OWN.

HE COULD TO FIVE OF THEM.

HE CAN'T TO THE BIG THREE AS THEY ARE CALLED.

THAT HAS TO BE DONE AT THE STATE LEVEL.

THAT HAS TO GO TO THE STATE ASSEMBLY.

HE COULD CHANGE ADMISSIONS TO THE 130 OTHER SCHOOLS.

HE COULD CHANGE ADMISSIONS TO ALL OF THE OTHER PUBLIC SCHOOLS CAN WHICH SOEFKT AFFECT SO MANY STUDENTS.

ESPECIALLY THOSE OF COLOR ESPECIALLY LOW INCOME SCHOOLS.

TO START I THINK WE'RE FOCUSSING ON THE WRONG THING.

WE'RE TRYING TO CHANGE EIGHT SCHOOLS INSTEAD OF ALL OF THE REST OF THEM.

THE SECOND ISSUE IS THE SHSAT IS A DIAGNOSTIC.

IT SHOWS WHAT A TERRIBLE EDUCATION THE MAJORITY OF THE KIDS IN NEW YORK CITY ARE GETTING.

LOT OF PEOPLE THINK WELL THE TEST IS A BIG DEAL.

YOU SAY, THIS TEST ESSENTIALLY IS A SYMPTOM OF THE DISEASE.

THE TEST IS NOT THE DISEASE.

YES.

VERY MUCH SO.

HERE IS THE THING.

THE TEST IS ABOVE GRADE LEVEL.

IT IS ONE OF THE REASONS THAT PEOPLE SAY, WELL STATE TEST SCORES SHOULD BE JUST AS GOOD FOR APPLYING TO AN SHSAT AS THE SHSAT IS.

STATE TEST SCORES TELL YOU IF THE CHILD IS ON GRADE LEVEL OR SLIGHTLY ABOVE GRADE LEVEL.

THE SHSAT ACTUALLY TESTS SUBJECTS LIKE ALGEBRA, HAS SOME GEOGRAPHY ON IT.

IT HAS -- SORRY.

GEOMETRY.

DOESN'T HAVE GEOGRAPHY.

NEW YORK -- ARE NOT GOOD WITH GEOGRAPHY.

ALGEBRA.

GEOGRAPHY.

HAS SOME GRAMMAR AND ALL OF THESE THINGS.

THEY ARE LOOKING FOR KIDS WHO ARE ENOUGH ABOVE GRADE LEVEL THAT THEY CAN DO ACCELERATED WORK.

SOME KIDS COME INTO STUYVESANT AND THEY CAN TAKE AN AP CLASS IN FRESHMAN YEAR.

THEY ARE PREPARED FOR THAT.

SO THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS STATE TEST SCORES ARE NOT EQUAL TO WHAT THE SHSAT IS TESTING.

SO WHAT THE SHSAT IS SHOWING IS HOW VERY, VERY FEW NEW YORK CITY STUDENTS ARE PREPARED TO DO ACCELERATED WORK.

WHAT IS -- YOU AND I COULD TALK ABOUT THIS FOREVER.

UNFORTUNATELY WE DON'T HAVE THAT MUCH TIME.

SO CLEARLY YOUR THESIS IS THIS IS SHOWING THAT THE SCHOOLS ARE NOT GOING A GOOD JOB THAT SO FEW PEOPLE ARE PREPARED FOR THIS ABOVE LEVEL.

WHAT IS THE ANSWER?

WHAT SHOULD WE BE DOING?

WHAT DO YOU THINK NEW YORK CITY SCHOOLS SHOULD BE DOING IN INSTEAD.

FIRST LET'S TALK RAISING THE BAR FOR ALL KIDS AND LET'S TALK ABOUT RAISING IT NOT IN NINTH GRADE BUT AT THE KINDERGARTEN LEVEL.

THE MAYOR KEEPS ADDING NEW PIECES TO THE SCHOOL SYSTEM.

UPK, 3 PK BUT THE FACTOR OF THE MATTER IS THE BAR IS STILL SO LOW.

WHAT WE CALL GIFTED EDUCATION IN THE UNITED STATES WOULD BE CONSIDERED GENERAL ED THREE YEARS AGO IN EUROPE AND ASIA.

IF THOSE KIDS CAN DO THE WORK THERE IS NO REASON WHY OUR KIDS CAN'T DO THE WORK.

WE COULD TALK FOR HOURS ABOUT THIS.

WE'RE GOING TO GET YOU BACK IN AND TALK MORE ABOUT IT.

CHILINA, A PLEASURE.

LOOK FORWARD TO TALK TOING YOU AGAIN.

DO WELL.

THANK YOU.

> PENGUINS HAVE BEEN DESCRIBED AS THE MOST ENDANGERED ANIMAL YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD OF.

THE WORLD'S ONLY SCALY MAMMAL.

PENGUINS ARE NOW TRAFFICKED AT A HIGHER RATE THAN RHINO, ELEPHANTS AND TIGERS COMBINED.

ONE HEROIC CONSERVATIONIST HAS PUT HERSELF ON THE FRONT LINE OF THE BATTLE TO SAVE THESE SURPRISINGLY CHARMING CREATURES.

HER STORY AND THAT OF THE PENGUINS IS THE SUBJECT OF NATURE'S LATEST INSTALLMENT, THE WORLD'S MOST WANTED ANIMAL.

THE PENG LIN HAS EXISTED FOR 40 MILLION YEARS BUT IT MAY NOT SURVIVE MANY MORE.

AND EXACTLYIVE PRODUCE OVER 'NATURE' JOINS US NOW.

FRED, THE PANGOLIN AS I SAID IS MOST TRAFFICKED ANIMAL IN THE WORLD BY FAR.

YET I'M WILLING TO WAGER AT LEAST 90% OF OUR VIEWERS HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THE PACK LIN WHY?

MAYBE UP UNTIL FIVE YEARS AGO I NEVER HEARD OF THE PANGOLIN.

AND WHY?

AND AFTER 5 YEARS OF NATURE AND HUNDREDS OF PROGRAMS WE'VE NEVER EVEN HAD A PANGOLIN IN A SHOW.

THEY ARE VERY HARD TO FIND.

THEY ARE THREATENED.

ENDANGERED.

AND THEY ARE VERY ELUSIVE IN THE SAVANNAH.

YOU CAN'T SEE THEM.

THEY ARE WELL CAMOUFLAGED AND THERE AREN'T A LOT OF THEM AROUND.

SO, YOU KNOW, NORMALLY YOU WOULDN'T NORMALLY SEE ONE.

IN OUR SHOW WE HAVE A WILDLIFE CAMERAMAN WHO'S BEEN SHOOTING 25 YEARS AND HE'S ONLY SEEN THEM THREE TIMES.

WOW.

AND THEY ARE THE CUTEST THINGS.

VERY CUTE.

LIKE LITTLE WALKING DINOSAURS OR SOMETHING.

WHY ARE THEY BEING TRAFFICKED TO SUCH A DEGREE?

IT IS THEIR SCALES.

THEIR SCALES ARE WANTED IN ASIA AND GROUND DOWN AND BOILED AND THOUGHT TO HAVE SOME MEDICINAL CURE.

TO BITE YOUR NAILS AND SEE IF YOU ARE CURED IS BETTER THAN TAKING THESE ANIMALS OUT OF THE WILD.

THE SCALES HAVE BEEN SOUGHT OFF IN ASIA FOR A CENTURY.

MAYBE LOCKER.

YEAH.

NEVERTHELESS THE DEMAND SEEMS TO HAVE SPIKED THROUGH THE ROOF IN THE LAST 20 YEARS, HENCE THEN CREASE IN TRAFFIC.

AND WHY?

DO WE KNOW?

UP UNTIL ABOUT 2000 IT WAS LEGAL TO TRADE PANGOLIN IN ASIA.

AND THERE ARE FOUR SPECIES IN ASIA AND FOUR SPECIES IN AFRICA.

THEY ARE MUCH MORE THREATENED AND ENDANGERED IN ASIA.

AND FROM THE YEAR 2000 ON THEY COMPLETELY STOPPED IMPORTING PANGOLINS.

SO NOW THERE IS A GREATER DEMAND FOR THE AFRICAN PANGOLIN.

AND I ALSO THINK THE SCALES OF THE PANGOLIN ARE SAME THING AS A RHINO HORN.

AND I THINK SINCE THE RHINOS HAVE BECOME FAR MORE PROTECTED, PEOPLE ARE NOW TURNED TO THE PANGOLIN SCALES TO KIND OF DO THE SAME THING.

ALL RIGHT.

SO ENTER MARIE INTO THE PICTURE.

WHY IS SHE SO IMPORTANT TO THE PICTURE?

IN ANYNAMIBIA SHE STARTED A CONSERVATION AND WANTED TO BRING ATTENTION TO THESE LESSER KNOWN ANIMALS.

THEY DON'T GET A LOT OF ATTENTION.

THEY ARE NOT THE BIG MARQUEE NAMED ANIMALS LIKE ELEPHANTS AND BIG CATS.

SO SHE WAS BRINGING ATTENTION TO THESE LESSER KNOWN ANIMALS.

AND SOMEBODY HEARD ABOUT HER AND BROUGHT HER AN ORPHAN PANGOLIN.

AND THAT BECAME SORT OF THE PROCESS FOR HER TO NURTURE THIS PANGOLIN AND GAIN THE REPUTATION OF TAKING CARE OF THESE ANIMALS, WHICH ARE VERY, VERY DIFFICULT TO MAINTAIN IN CAPTIVITY.

THEY DIE.

RIGHT.

MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO IT.

SHE'S ONE OF THE FEW, LIKE A HANDFUL OF PEOPLE WHO CAN KEEP THEM ALIVE.

SHE SAYS THERE ARE THREE IN THE WORLD.

SHE'S ONE OF THEM TO.

REALLY KEEP THEM ALIVE IS 20 HOURS A DAY AND SHE WALKS WITH IT.

AND HAS HER ASSISTANTS WALK WITH IT FIVE HOURS A DAY.

TO FEED.

TO FEED AND FORAGE AND HAVE A SEMBLANCE OF A NORMAL LIFE.

THEY ARE VERY SCARED ANIMALS.

THEY GET STRESSED VERY EASILY.

SO WHEN THEY ARE KIDNAPPED, YOU KNOW, MOST OF THEM DIE FROM THE TRAUMA.

THINK IF SOMEBODY THREW A BAG OVER YOUR HEAD AND THREW YOU IN TRUNK OF A CAR HOW TRAUMATIC THAT IS.

SO THAT IS WHAT HAPPENS TO THE ANIMALS AND SHE'S FIGURED A WAY YOU HAVE TO PUT A LOT OF TIME AND CARING TO NURTURE THEM.

SHE'S DOING TIRELESS WORK AS YOU JUST DESCRIBED.

BUT SHE'S SAVING ONE AT A TIME.

AND THAT -- THAT'S NOTHING COMPARED TO THE THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS THAT ARE POACHED AND TRAFFICKED.

RIGHT.

SO CLEARLY THE ANSWER IS TO STOP THE DEMAND FOR PANGOLIN SCALES.

RIGHT?

STOP IT OR CURTAIL IT OR DIMINISH IT?

HOW DO THEY PLAN TO DO THAT?

YOU KNOW IT IS VERY DIFFICULT.

LOT OF DEMAND IS COMING FROM ASIA.

SO MARIA REACHED OUT TO THIS CHINESE ACTRESS AND MODEL.

HER NAME IS ANGEL.

-- ANGEL BABY.

UNBELIEVABLE POPULAR.

BIG PANGOLIN FAN.

AND SHE RECORDED THIS PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT FOR CHINA TO NOT, YOU KNOW, POACH THESE ANIMALS.

AND, YOU KNOW, HARD TO SAY WHAT KIND OF EFFECT IT WILL HAVE.

I THINK YOU REALLY NEED TO CHANGE THE MINDS OF PEOPLE, THE YOUNGER GENERATION.

SO, YOU KNOW, THEY LOOK AT THAT AS BEING SOMETHING YOU WOULDN'T WANT TO BEGIN WITH.

THE SAME THING AS ELEPHANT IVORY AND RHINO HORN AND PANGOLIN SCALES.

IT IS NOT COOL.

NOT HELPFUL.

IT HAS NO MEDICINAL VALUE.

LEARNING WHAT THEY ARE IN THE FIRST PLACE IS A START.

WHAT ANGEL BABY IS DOING IS ONE THING.

WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO BE DOING WITH THIS SERIES IS ANOTHER, RIGHT?

YES.

I HOPE SO, YES.

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE SERIES.

YOU HAVE BEEN HERE MANY TIMES AND WE TALKED ABOUT STORIES THAT ARE ALWAYS FUN AND VERY OFTEN FUNNY.

BUT A SERIES UNDERCURRENT OF EVERY SHOW OF THE SERIES SEEMS TO ME TO BE THE CRITICAL IMPORTANCE OF CONSERVATION AND PRESERVATION.

RIGHT?

AM I RIGHT ABOUT THIS.

YEAH, YOU KNOW, SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE WE TOO OFTEN ROMANTICIZE OR SANITIZE NATURE.

WHENEVER THERE IS PREDATION, WE GET E-MAIL, WHY DID OWE SHOW THAT?

RIGHT.

YOU ACTUALLY DON'T SHOW EVERYTHING YOU COULD.

EXACTLY.

I MEAN WE REALLY EDIT IT DOWN.

IT MUCH MORE HORRIFIC WHAT GOES ON IN THE WILD.

SO THERE IS A RESPONSIBILITY TO NOT JUST SHOW CUTE FUZZY ANIMALS KIND OF BEHAVING IN A WAY THAT WE THINK WE WOULDN'T WANT THEM TO BEHAVE.

THERE IS A REAL DARK SIDE TO A LOT OF WHAT'S GOING ON.

AND THE PANGOLIN, YOU KNOW, NOBODY HAS HEARD OF THIS ANIMAL.

IT IS NOT LIKE ELEPHANTS WHERE YOU SEE COMMERCIALS ON TELEVISION.

SO WE FELT IT WAS SUPER IMPORTANT THAT WE PUT THIS OUT THERE.

SO, YOU KNOW, YOU HAVE BEEN DOING THIS A LONG TIME.

YOU HAVE A LOT OF KNOWLEDGE, LOT OF EXPERIENCE.

WHAT IS YOUR GUESS?

CAN THE PANGOLINS BE SAVED?

I DON'T THINK THE ASIAN PANGOLIN CAN.

I THINK MORE HOPEFUL FOR THE AFRICAN PANGOLIN, YOU KNOW.

THE HARDER IT IS TO GET A PANGOLIN IN THE WILD THE MORE VALUABLE THE SCALES BECOME SO IT BECOME THIS IS CATCH 22 THING.

YOU KNOW, SO HARD TO -- WE DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW MANY PANGOLINS ARE LEFT.

WE DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THEIR BIOLOGY.

SO WE JUST DON'T KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT THEM.

YEAH.

ALL RIGHT, FRED.

WELL LET'S HOPE FOR THE BEST FOR THE PANG LICENSE.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US.

THANK YOU.OLINS.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US.

MY WIFE AND I SAW THE SHOW ABOUT A WEEK AGO.

AND THIS SHOW DID.

IT WAS A SOUND TRACK OF OUR LIVE.

GROWING UP IN THE SIXTY AS A TEENAGER AND OVERWHELMED BY SONG AFTER SONG HERE.

LET ME ASK YOU FIRST ABOUT THE 5th ANNIVERSARY AND CAROL KING SHOWING UP ON STAGE.

YOU ARE SINGING WITH HER AND TAKING BOWS.

DOING 'I FEEL THE EARTH MOVE' AND THE WHOLE CROWD ON THEIR FEET.

DID YOU KNOW SHE WAS GOING TO BE THERE.

I DID.

YEAH, OF COURSE WE HAD TO REHEARSE AND MAKE SURE EVERYBODY KNEW AND WE HAD TO REHEARSE TOGETHER.

SO I FOUND OUT A FEW DAYS BEFOREHAND AND IT WAS SO TOUGH TO KEEP THE SECRET.

I WAS VERY EXCITED.

IMAGINE DIFFICULT.

JUST HER AND I AND WE BLOCKED IT OUT AND REHEARSED IT.

I DIDN'T KNOW VERY MUCH.

I WAS SORT OF EMBARRASSED I DIDN'T KNOW MORE.

I DIDN'T REALIZE SHE'D WRITTEN ALL THOSE HITS.

WHEN I STARTED DIGGING I BECAME EVEN BIGGER FAN.

I REMEMBER PUTTING ON TAPESTRY AND LISTENING TO HER BUT I DIDN'T QUITE REALIZE THE BREADTH OF HER GENES.

I THOUGHT I KNEW A LOT OF HER SONGS BUT ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU HAVE THE DRIFTERS DOING SOME AND I SAID, I NEVER KNEW THAT SHE WROTE FOR THE DRIFTERS AND THE MONKEES.

AND EVERYBODY AROUND US, OH GOD I REMEMBER THAT.

I WAS 18 WHEN THIS CAME OUT OR WHENEVER IT WAS.

IT IS SO EVOCATIVE.

MUSIC IS EVOCATIVE ANYWAY.

THAT SENSE MEMORY IS SO POWERFUL.

PEOPLE GREET ME ALL THE TIME AND SAY, YOU KNOW, THIS SONG IS POPULAR WHEN I WAS ON A ROAD TRIP WHERE MY BEST FRIEND AND THIS IS WHAT THIS SONG MEANS TO ME, OR I WAS GOING THROUGH THIS TIME IN MY LIFE.

AND I SEE GENERATIONS COMING TO THE SHOW.

GRANDMOTHER, MOTHERS AND CHILDREN AND WHAT THAT MUSIC MEANS TO ALL OF THEM IN SUCH DIFFERENT WAYS.

IT IS REALLY COOL.

AND WHAT DO YOU THINK?

AND YOU ARE -- BUT FOR A BROADWAY SHOW TO BE AS SUCCESSFUL AS THIS IS.

IT IS A TOUGH SLOG FOR BROADWAY SHOWS TO BE SUCCESSFUL.

YOU ARE FIVE YEARS IN AND STILL GOING STRONG HERE.

WHY DO YOU THINK?

WELL I THINK, YOU KNOW, YOU SAID IT WITH THE MUSIC.

I THINK THE MUSIC IS A BIG PART.

AND HOW PEOPLE ARE TOUCHED BY FIRST OF ALL THAT TIME IN THEIR LIVES WHAT MUSIC MEANS TO THEM PERSONALLY.

BUT THEY ARE JUST GREAT SONGS.

THE SHOW STANDS ALONE JUST ON THE MUSIC AND THEN YOU'D IN HER STORY.

AND WHAT THAT MEANS FOR PEOPLE AND HOW PEOPLE CAN RELATE TO WHAT SCHOOES BEEN THROUGH AND HER SHYNESS AND FEAR AND THE DIFFICULT TIMES IN HER MARRIAGE.

AND FRIENDSHIP.

IT IS ALSO A STORY OF THE LOVING FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN THOSE FOUR WRITERS.

YEAH.

AND AGAIN SOMETHING I I DIDN'T KNOW.

I KNEW HOW SUCCESSFUL THE OTHERS WERE BUT I DIDN'T KNOW HOW CLOSE THEY WERE.

AND YOU ARE SEEING THIS SORT OF COMPETITION ON THE STAGE THAT YET THEY WERE SUCH DEAR FRIENDS.

THEY WOULD ACTUALLY TAKE VACATIONS TOGETHER TO TRY TO, YOU KNOW, DISCOURAGE THE OTHERS FROM WRITING SO THAT, YOU KNOW, THEY COULD BE TOGETHER.

I LOVE SOME OF THE LINES.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT?

OH GOD I LOVE IT IT'S GREAT.

AWESOME.

A THOUSAND PERFORMANCES.

MORE THAN A THOUSAND PERFORMANCES.

IS THERE A POINT WHERE YOU'VE DONE IT SO MANY TIMES THAT YOU ARE NOT EVEN THINKING ABOUT YOUR LINES ANYMORE?

ARE THEY JUST ESSENTIALLY THEY BECOME PART OF YOU?

YES.

THAT IS A GREAT WAY OF SAYING IT.

THAT IS EXACTLY RIGHT.

SOMETIMES I SCARE MYSELF BECAUSE IT IS NOW SUCH PART OF WHAT FEELS LIKE MY OWN DNA.

THEY JUST BECOME YOUR THOUGHTS.

YOU DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE SAYING ANYMORE.

IN FACT WHEN I CAME BACK TO THE SHOW JUST RECENTLY I WENT THROUGH MY LINES AT HOME.

I THOUGHT TO MYSELF MY GOSH.

THIS IS ALL SONT.MA AS SOON AS I WENT INTO THE SHOW WITH THE WIG, THE COSTUMES BEING IN THE LIGHTING WITHED THE SAME THOUGHT PROCESS AND A PEOPLE AROUND YOU.

IT WAS ALL LIKE I'D NEVER LEFT.

I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT.

THE OLD -- IT IS LIKE RIDING A BIKE.

NEVER FORGET IT.

YEAH.

WHEN YOU ARE PLAYING A ROLE ABOUT PERSON.

LIKE A BIO SHOW.

COMING INTO IT.

ARE YOU LOOKING TO BASICALLY TRY TO REPLICATE TO MIMIC THAT PERSON?

OR IS THAT JUST SORT OH OF A ROAD MAP FOR YOU?

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH SOMEONE WHO IS ICONIC WHO IS STILL ALIVE?

THAT IS A GREAT QUESTION.

AND STILL VISIBLE.

AND SHE MEANS SO MUCH TO SO MANY PEOPLE AND IN CULTURE IN PARTICULAR.

FOR ME WHAT MAKES THE ROLE SO POWERFUL IS THAT SHE IS COMING THERE THANK YOU LENS OF ME.

SO THERE IS A HEALTHY DOSE OF ME TRYING TO CAPTURE HER, HER MANNERISMS, SUPPRESSIONS.

WITHOUT DOING A CAKETURE.

I WANT IT TO BE TRUTHFUL.

SO THERE ARE CERTAIN PARSE OF MYSELF I CONNECT WITH HER SO I TRY TO FUSE THOSE THINGS.

I TELL PEOPLE SHE'S YELLOW AND I'M RED.

MY VERSION OF HER IS GOING TO BE SOMEWHERE ORANGE.
