>>> IT WAS AN EPIC FEAT OF
ENDUANCE AND ONE OF THE
GREATEST PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORDS OF
HUMAN SURVIVAL.
BRITISH EXPLORER AND A CREW OF
27 MEN ATTEMPTED TO MAKE THE
FIRST LAND CROSSING.
MOTHER NATURE SET THEM ON A
COLLISION COURSE WITH THE
ELEMENTS.
THEIR EXPEDITION OF DISCOVERY
BECAME ONE OF SURVIVAL.
THIS IS THEIR STORY.
>> WE HIRED HIM TO BE THE
PHOTOGRAPHIC WHO WAS THE BEST OF
THE BEST AT THE TIME.
I PUT TOGETHER AN AMAZING TEAM.
TO ME IT'S AN AMAZING STORY.
IT'S JUST AN EXTRAORDINARY
STORY.
>> THE WHOLE POINT WAS TO CREATE
THE FILM WHICH WOULD BE SOLD TO
BRITAIN AND THE MONEY FROM THOSE
SALES WOULD EFFECT THE COST OF
THE EXPEDITION.
HE HAS A REAL SKILL IN
COMMUNICATING IDEAS ABOUT WHAT
THEY ARE TRYING TO DO AND
MODULATING WHAT THEY ARE DOING.
NOW WE ARE IN A SITUATION WHERE
WE ARE ALL IN PERIL BUT KEEP
RECORDING DOCUMENTS IN WHAT WE
DO BECAUSE THAT WILL BE PERHAPS
MORE IMPORTANT.
>> LIKE ALL EXPEDITIONS THEY HAD
TO PAY THEIR DEBT BY LECTURING
AND WRITING.
IT WAS SUCH A NOVELTY THERE.
>> WE THINK THERE WERE ABOUT 400
AND WE HAVE 98 IN THIS
COLLECTION.
THERE IS I THINK ANOTHER 30 THAT
HAVE NEVER BEEN DISCOVERED.
THE REASON WHY IS THAT HE DIDN'T
WANT THE OTHER MEN TO TAKE THEM
SO HE DID THE PREEDITS.
AND THE ONES THAT HE CHOSE WERE
JUST PERFECT AND THE BEST
QUALITY PICTURES.
IF YOU LOOK AT THE GREAT
PHOTOGRAPHERS HURLEY IS THERE.
I KNOW SPEAKING TO MANY
DOCUMENTARY FILM MAKERS AND
PHOTOGRAPHERS THEY ABSOLUTELY
RECOGNIZE HIS CONTRIBUTION.
I THINK GOING FORWARD OVER THE
NEXT GENERATION THAT IS THE
IMAGE.
THE STORY OF THE LEADERSHIP IS
SUCH AN EXCEPTIONAL ONE.
I THINK WE CAN ALL LEARN FROM
WHAT HE HAS DONE.
AND I THINK IT IS A REALLY
MODERN APPROACH.
IT COULD HAVE HAPPENED
YESTERDAY.
THE IDEA OF COMMUNICATING WITH
HIS MEN AND SAYING THIS IS WHAT
WE ARE GOING TO DO IS A VERY
MODERN CONCEPT.
THERE IS A VERY FAMOUS PICTURE
CALLED THE NIGHT WATCHMAN.
IN THE FIRST DRAFT THERE IS A
GHOSTLY FACE THAT APPEARS IN THE
BACKGROUND.
THAT WASN'T SEEN BEFORE.
IN MANY OF THE FIRST DRAFTS YOU
SEE THE MID GROUND DETAIL.
THE OTHER ONES ARE THE ONES THAT
GET THE FEEL FOR THE PICTURES
BEING CARRIED OUT TO SHIPS.
YOU CAN SEE EACH LITTLE CUBICLE.
THE BEST ONE IS AN APPROACH
WHICH HAVE ALL OF THE BOOKS.
YOU COULDN'T REALLY DEFINE WHAT
THEY WERE LEAVING.
YOU CAN SEE THEY HAD A WHOLE
ENCYCLOPEDIA.
>> THE IMAGES -- THESE
PHOTOGRAPHS ARE GIVEN THE
OPPORTUNITY TO SEE WHAT IT WAS
LIKE 100 YEARS AGO.
THERE IS THE WHOLE ART SIDE OF
THIS, THE WHOLE CONCEPT OF THESE
PRINTS AND HOW THESE GLASS
PLATES SURVIVED AND HOW
BEAUTIFUL THEY REALLY ARE.
THEY'RE AS FINE AS ANY
PHOTOGRAPHY I KNOW OF.
