THE MIDTERMS: A MIXED VICTORY

November 08, 2018 at 4:30 am

The dust settles after the midterm elections and a mixed victory is declared. Questions are being raised about the balance of power and its impact on the tri-state area. Republican stronghold Staten Island sends a Democrat to D.C. On Long Island, GOP stalwarts Peter King and Lee Zeldin retain their seats while former rapper and Rhodes Scholar Antonio Delgado claims victory after a hard fought battle in the Hudson Valley. Incoming Attorney General Letitia James makes history as she becomes the first black woman elected to a statewide office. And self-identified Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez becomes the youngest woman elected to Congress. Both of these women are part of a larger pink wave shattering the political glass ceiling. Despite long lines, rain and swollen ballots, the will of the people has been heard. We’re breaking it all down civilly, respectfully and thoughtfully.

Aired on November 7, 2018.

>> THANKS TO YOU WE OWNED THE
GROUND.
THANKS TO YOU TOMORROW WILL BE A
NEW DAY IN AMERICA.
>> LAST NIGHT THE REPUBLICAN
PARTY DEFIED HISTORY TO EXPAND
OUR SENATE MAJORITY WHILE
SIGNIFICANTLY BEATING
EXPECTATIONS IN THE HOUSE.
>> GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO
"METROFOCUS."
I'M JACK FORD.
LEADERS OF BOTH PARTIES HERALDED
THE MIDTERM AS A VICTORY AS
DEMOCRATS SEIZED HOUSE OF
REPRESENTATIVES WHILE REPUBLICAN
PARTY CONSOLIDATED THEIR GRIP ON
THE SENATE CLINCHING 218 SEATS
NEEDED TO SECURE A MAJORITY IN
THE HOUSE, THE DEMOCRATS
PROPERTY AN END TO ONE-PARTY
RULE IN WASHINGTON AND ARE NOW
IN A POSITION TO COMBAT THE
PRESIDENT'S AGENDA.
PRESIDENT TRUMP FOCUSED MUCH OF
HIS ATTENTION IN THE WEEKS
LEADING UP TO ELECTION DAY ON
TIGHT SENATE RACES.
THAT WORK APPEARED TO PAY
DIVIDENDS WITH REPUBLICANS
OUSTING DEMOCRATIC SENATORS IN
INDIANA, NORTH DAKOTA AND
MISSOURI.
DESPITE A SPIRITED CHALLENGE
FROM DEMOCRATIC CHALLENGER BETO
O'ROURKE, SENATOR TED CRUZ HELD
ONTO HIS SEAT IN TEXAS.
A NUMBER OF HIGHLY CONTESTED
GUBERNATORIAL RACES IN KEY
BATTLEGROUND STATES SAW BOTH
PARTIES SECURE VICTORIES.
REPUBLICAN GOVERNORS WERE
ELECTED IN OHIO AND FLORIDA
WHILE MICHIGAN AND WICK ELECTED
DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES DESPITE
BOTH STATES SWINGING BLUE TO RED
IN 2016 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION.
IN THE STATE OF NEW YORK, IT WAS
A BIG NIGHT FOR THE DEMOCRATIC
PARTY AS THE PARTY SECURED ALL
STATEWIDE RACES.
GOVERNOR CUOMO WAS EASILY
RE-ELECTED TO A THIRD TIME AND
LETICIA JAMES MADE HISTORY
BECOMING THE FIRST EVER
AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMAN TO BE
ELECTED TO STATEWIDE OFFICE MATT
STATE AS SHE WON HER BID FOR
ATTORNEY GENERAL.
A GREAT DEAL TO DISCUSS.
FOR THAT WE WELCOME TWO OF OUR
GOOD FRIENDS JOURNALIST AMY
HOLMES AND POLITICAL ANALYST
BACK TO THE PROGRAM.
WE HAVE A LOT TO TALK ABOUT.
LET'S START WITH THE BIG
PICTURE.
YOU HAVE FOLKS SAYING, YES,
INDEED, IT WAS A RED WAVE.
YES, INDEED, IT WAS A BLUE WAVE.
LET ME GET THE TAKE FROM THE TWO
OF YOU.
HOW WOULD YOU CHARACTERIZE IT.
>> RED RIPPLE, BLUE RIPPLE IS
HOW I WOULD PUT IT.
WE GOT ALL THIS HYPE, THE
MIDTERM OF OUR LIFETIMES.
PRESIDENT OBAMA MAKING HUGE
APOCALYPTIC CLAIMS ON THE
CAMPAIGN TRAIL AS WELL AS TRUMP
SAYING THIS IS GOING TO BE A
REFERENDUM ON ME.
AS IT TURNED OUT, I THINK IT WAS
KIND OF LIKE A SHOULDER SHRUG.
THE CONVENTIONAL WISDOM WAS
CORRECT.
THE DEMOCRATS HELD ONTO THE
HOUSE NOT BY REALLY HISTORIC
NUMBERS.
IT WAS AN HISTORIC AVERAGE,
ACTUALLY.
PRESIDENT CLINTON LOST MORE THAN
60 SEATS IN HIS FIRST MIDTERM,
OBAMA MORE THAN 50.
SO DONALD TRUMP ACTUALLY DID
BETTER THAN THOSE PREVIOUS
PRESIDENTS.
SO I THINK WE'RE KIND OF WHERE
WE EXPECTED TO BE FRANKLY.
>> WHAT DO YOU THINK?
>> IT WASN'T BY ACCIDENT I WORE
PURPLE.
LISTEN, IT COULD HAVE BEEN
WORSE, IT ACOUSTIC BETTER.
I HAVE A SMILE ABOUT SOME
THINGS.
IT WASN'T QUITE THE PARTY I WAS
ANTICIPATING LAST NIGHT.
>> YOU'RE VERY SUBDUED TODAY,
ACTUALLY.
>> I'M USED TO DEALING WITH
IMPERFECTION.
LISTEN, THERE IS ONE BIG CHANGE.
IT DOES MATTER A LOT THAT
DEMOCRATS ARE GOING TO CONTROL
THE CONGRESS.
WE FINALLY HAVE SOME KIND OF
CHECK ON THIS PRESIDENT.
IT'S GOING TO BE REALLY
INTERESTING TO SEE HOW THE DEMS
PLAY THAT, HOW AGGRESSIVELY IT
GOES, HOW MUCH OF A CHECK THEY
WANT TO BE WITH POLITICAL
REACTION, THAT IS.
BUT YOU'VE GOT TO HAND IT TO
MITCH McCONNELL, REPUBLICANS
SAID THEY MADE PROGRESS IN THE
SENATE.
THAT IS, INDEED, A WIN FOR THE
PRESIDENT.
>> TALK ABOUT THE NOTION NOW OF
ONE PARTY NOT BEING IN CONTROL
OF EVERYTHING.
>> SURVEYS COME OUT THIS TELL US
PERIODICALLY THAT TELL US
GENERALLY THE PUBLIC DOESN'T
LIKE ONE PARTY BEING IN CONTROL
OF WHITE HOUSE, SENATE AND
HOUSE.
NOW THE COURT ENTERED INTO THAT
EQUATION, THAT CALCULUS.
WHAT WE HAVE NOW IS DEMOCRATIC
CONTROL OF THE HOUSE, SENATE
CONTROL, AND A LITTLE BIT
STRONGER NOW SENATE, REPUBLICAN
IN THE WHITE HOUSE.
THAT IS A GOOD THING?
DOES THAT SUGGEST WHAT A LOT OF
PEOPLE THINK THAT THAT'S GOOD WE
HAVE IT BROKEN DOWN LIKE THAT?
OR IS THAT ESSENTIALLY A RECIPE
FOR GREATER GRIDLOCK MOVING
FORWARD?
>> IT'S A GOOD THING IF YOU LIKE
GRIDLOCK AND YOU WANT TO PUT THE
BREAKS O-- BRAKES ON.
I'M NOT SURE VOTERS GO IN AND
SAY I WANT TO HAVE A DIVIDED
CANDIDATE SO I'M GOING TO VOTE
FOR A CANDIDATE WOULD DELIVER
THAT.
YOU'RE NOT GOING TO VOTE FOR
DEMOCRATS JUST TO GIVE DEMOCRATS
POWER.
I THINK WHAT IT DOES REFLECT
OFTENTIMES IS THAT VOTERS WANT
CHANGE.
WHAT THEY ARE SEEING GOING ON IN
WASHINGTON DOESN'T NECESSARILY
MAKE THEM HAPPY.
HERE IS ONE FUN FACT
PARTICULARLY FOR LIBERTARIANS.
WHEN YOU HAVE DIVIDED
GOVERNMENT, YOU ALSO HAVE LOWER
GOVERNMENT SPENDING.
THAT'S SOMETHING THAT SHOULD
MAKE CONSERVATIVES HAPPY.
THE TYPICAL INDICATOR OF HIGHER
GOVERNMENT SPENDING IS WHEN YOU
HAVE ONE IN CHARGE OF ALL THREE
HOUSES THERE.
WHETHER IT'S DEMOCRATS OR
REPUBLICANS, SPENDING GOES UP.
WHEN YOU HAVE THE GRIDLOCK, WHEN
YOU HAVE THE BRAKES ON.
>> PEOPLE TAPPING ON THE BRAKES
OR SLAMMING ON THE BRAKES.
>> I GOT IT BUT I DON'T THINK
THIS IS WHAT IT WAS ABOUT.
THIS REALLY WAS A REFERENDUM ON
DONALD TRUMP, RIGHT?
THERE WERE PARTS WHERE THERE WAS
A REJECTION.
THE SUBURBS OF AMERICA HAVE
JOINED THE CITIES OF AMERICA AND
SAY, HOLD ON A SECOND, WE DON'T
LIKE SOME IMPORTANT STUFF ABOUT
THIS GUY AND WE WANT TO PUT THE
BRAKES ON OF THAT'S REALLY WHAT
THIS WAS ABOUT.
USH
YOU'RE RIGHT, THE DIVIDED
GOVERNMENT WILL BRING YOU
GRIDLOCK.
I THINK MORE AMERICANS WILL
SOLVE A COUPLE OF BIG PROBLEMS
OUT THERE BUT THIS IS WHAT WE'VE
GOT.
>> WE TALK ABOUT WAVES AND ONE
THAT IS BEING APPLAUDED ROUNDLY
IN A LOT OF AREAS OF THE COUNTRY
ARE DESCRIBED AS A PINK WAVE.
WE'RE SEEING NOW THEY ARE SAYING
IN CONGRESS 100 WOMEN MORE SO
THAN EVER.
WE'RE SEEING IN VARIOUS PLACES
WITHIN THE POLITICAL SYSTEM.
>> THE PINK THING, THESE WOMEN,
THEY DON'T SEEM THAT PINK TO ME.
>> I WAS GOING TO ASK YOU THAT.
>> WHAT DOES THIS MEAN, VETERANS
CAN'T BE PINK, TOO.
>> I UNDERSTAND WHERE PINK COMES
FROM, COME UP WITH ANOTHER ONE.
>> IT'S LIKE SAYING WITH YOUR
CHILDREN, GIRLS DON'T ALWAYS
HAVE TO WEAR PINK.
BOYS CAN WEAR PINK SOMETIMES.
>> LET ME EXPLAIN SOME THINGS TO
YOU.
I USUALLY DON'T LIKE GENDER
THEORIES ABOUT LEADERSHIP.
ONE IS WHEN YOU HAVE WOMEN IN
POWER YOU HAVE MORE PROBLEM
SOLVING.
MEN TAKE POLITICS AS MORE OF A
SPORT, JACK, WHICH IS SOMETHING
YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO RELATE TO
AND WOMEN REALLY WANT TO GET
DOWN TO WORK AND GET DOWN TO
BUSINESS.
I'M NOT NECESSARILY SURE WE'RE
GOING TO'S THAT IF NANCY PELOSI
IS THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE AND
WE HAVE MAXINE WALTER THERE AS
CHAIRMAN OF THE FINANCIAL
COMMITTEE, I THINK YOU'RE GOING
TO SEE A LOT OF BATTLES.
A LOT OF BATTLES WITH PRESIDENT
BUSH.
HERE IS ANOTHER THING, A CAVEAT
ABOUT ALL THESE WOMEN GETTING
INTO OFFICE PARTICULARLY IN ONE
PARTICULAR PARTY, THE DEMOCRATIC
PARTY, ALTHOUGH REPUBLICANS HAD
BIG SUCCESSES.
ONE OF THE DANGERS OF THAT, WE
SAW IT IN 2010 IS IF DEMOCRATS
GO OUT OF POWER, THEN A LOT OF
THESE WOMEN GO OUT THE DOOR AS
WELL.
SO WOMEN AS POLITICIANS ARE
ACTUALLY BETTER OFF SPLITTING A
LITTLE BIT MORE EVENLY BETWEEN
M'S DID AND REPUBLICANS IN ORDER
TO MAINTAIN POWER.
>> ONE THING ABOUT THE
DEMOCRATIC PARTY, CALLED IT A
RAINBOW WAVE.
ALL OF A SUDDEN DEMOCRATIC
PARTY, IT'S YOUNGER, FAR MORE
DIVERSE IN TERMS OF GENDER
DIVERSITY.
THE NOTION OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN
WOMEN IN POSITIONS.
>> CLAIRE McCASKILL, VERY YOUNG
REPUBLICAN IN MISSOURI.
>> WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT
FOR THE DEMOCRATS MOVING
FORWARD, THE IDEA OF BEING A
RAINBOW WAVE.
>> DEMOGRAPHICS ARE, INDEED,
DATA-DRIVEN.
THAT'S ONE OF THE BIGGEST
REASONS DEMS HAVE TO SMILE.
IF YOU'RE DOING WELL WITH
YOUNGER VOTERS, RIGHT, THEY ARE
GOING TO BE AROUND MORE THAN THE
OLDER VOTERS.
YOU'RE DOING WELL WITH NONWHITE
VOTERS.
NOW YOU'RE DOING WELL WITH WOMEN
VOTERS.
THAT'S NOT A BAD COALITION FOR
THE FUTURE, THOUGH, AMY.
>> YOU SAW THE DEMOGRAPHICS
DESTINY ARGUMENT AFTER 2008
ELECTION AND IT TURNED OUT NOT
TO BE TRUE.
>> SLOW.
>> WE ALSO KNOW WITH THE FEMALE
VOTE IT TENDS TO BE MORE LIBERAL
AMONG YOUNG WOMEN AND DIVORCED
SINGLE MOTHERS.
MATTERED WOMEN TYPICALLY THEY
VOTE REPUBLICAN.
THEY MIGHT HAVE BEEN A DEMOCRAT
IN THEIR 20s AND BECOME A
REPUBLICAN WHEN THEY HAVE KIDS
AND ARE PAYING TAXES.
THE DEMOCRATIC ARGUMENT CAN GO
TOO FAR.
>> IF GIVEN THE CHOICE, WOULDN'T
YOU RATHER HAVE A CHOICE OF
WHAT'S GOING TO BE ALIVE.
>> TAMMANY HALL WHERE THEY WOULD
TAKE DEATH CERTIFICATES AND VOTE
FIVE OR SIX TIMES.
>> IT IS A BET FOR THE FUTURE.
LISTEN, THERE ARE REASONS FOR
DEMOCRATS NOT TO BE DOING CART
WHEELS, LET'S ACKNOWLEDGE THAT.
THERE ARE STILL SOME PRETTY GOOD
SIGNS FOR THE FUTURE.
>> LET ME TALK ABOUT PRESIDENT
TRUMP.
TWO YEARS AGO HE'S ELECTED
PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES,
THERE WERE A LOT OF REPUBLICANS
THAT SEEMED TO BE TRYING TO
DISTANCE THEMSELVES FROM HIM.
LOOKED LIKE LAST COUPLE OF
MONTHS WE SAW A LOT OF
REPUBLICANS RUNNING DIRECTLY
TOWARD PRESIDENT TRUMP.
>> AND AS PRESIDENT TRUMP
TWEETED, IF YOU STUCK WITH ME
YOU WON.
IF YOU DIDN'T, BYE-BYE.
SO HE SORT OF -- THIS IS
CERTAINLY BEEN A LOT OF ANALYSIS
SAYING THIS CONGRESS, AT LEAST
THE GOP, IS GOING TO BE A WHOLE
LOT TRUMPIER.
THOSE CANDIDATES WHO DIDN'T
ALINE THEMSELVES WITH TRUMP SAW
THEM LOSE THEIR SEATS.
IT'S GOING TO BE TRUMPIER IN
THAT DEMOCRATS IN CONTROL ARE
GOING TO MAKE IT ALL ABOUT
TRUMP.
THAT'S ONE OF THE CRAZY THINGS
ABOUT HIS CANDIDACY.
TRUMP SEEMS TO BE FOCUSED ON
TRUMP, SO ARE HIS ENEMIES AND
THAT'S ALL WE HE SAID UP TALKING
ABOUT, SO IS THE MEDIA.
>> LET ME GIVE A SHARPER SHINE
ON THAT.
IT REWARDS COWARDICE.
ONE OF THE REALITIES IS THERE
WERE A LOT OF REPUBLICANS --
INCLUDING QUITE A NUMBER OF YOUR
FRIENDS, I KNOW, WHO REALLY
DON'T LIKE THIS GUY.
THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS ABOUT
DONALD TRUMP THEY FIND
OBJECTIONABLE.
YET FOR POLITICAL REASONS THEY
FEARED TAKING HIM ON.
ONE OF THE LESSONS OF TUESDAY IS
THAT YOU PAID A PRICE FOR TAKING
HIM ON AND BY SNUGGLING UP, JUST
ASK FUTURE SENATOR SCOTT AND
OTHERS WHO REALLY DID KIND OF
EMPRAYS HIM TO A GREATER OR
LESSER EXTENT, THEY DID PRETTY
WELL.
>> BRAVE FOR A LOT OF
REPUBLICANS TO SAY WE ARE GOING
TO SNUGGLE UP TO PRESIDENT
TRUMP, WHEN HE'S SUCH A WILD
CARD.
LAST WEEK WHEN HE DOES
BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP, A LOT OF
REPUBLICANS WERE REALLY NERVOUS.
OH, MY GOODNESS, HOW AM I GOING
TO ANSWER THIS.
AM I GOING TO HAVE TO DISTANCE
MYSELF.
THE ONES THAT STUCK WITH HIM,
THEY ARE GOING THE DISTANCE.
THAT WAS A RISKY PROPOSITION.
WE KNOW TRUMP WAS DRIVING THE
INTENSE OPPOSITION, INTENSITY OF
THE TURNOUT.
A LOT DIDN'T KNOW IF TRUMP WAS A
NET POSITIVE OR NET NEGATIVE.
>> LET ME GET LOCAL IN OUR
CONVERSATION.
THEN WE'LL COME BACK TO BIG
PICTURE TWO YEARS FROM NOW.
LET'S STAY LOCAL.
WE LOOK AT WHAT'S GOING ON IN
NEW YORK.
GOVERNOR CUOMO, NOBODY IS
SURPRISED, WINS A THIRD TERM.
WE SEE LETICIA JAMES WINNING,
BECOMING FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN
WOMAN DEMOCRAT ELECTED TO
STATEWIDE OFFICE ATTORNEY
GENERAL OF THE STATE OF NEW
YORK.
NOW, WE'RE TALKING LOCAL.
AND YET BOTH OF THEM IN THEIR
SPEECHES, THANK YOU I WON, THANK
YOU FOR HELPING ME WIN SPEECHES,
BOTH OF THEM JUST TOOK OFF,
CLEARED ALL-OUT WAR ON PRESIDENT
TRUMP.
LETICIA JAMES, THE ATTORNEY
GENERAL, ESSENTIALLY ANNOUNCING
WE'RE GOING TO LOOK INTO
EVERYTHING IN TERMS OF THE TRUMP
ORGANIZATION.
>> THEIR FELLOW NEW YORKER.
>> CLDECLARING WE'RE LOOKING AT
EVERYTHING.
DOES THAT STRIKE YOU AT ALL
UNUSUAL.
LET'S START WITH GOVERNOR CUOMO,
WHAT HE IS DOING IN HIS "I WON"
SPEECH DECLARING WAR ON
PRESIDENT TRUMP.
>> IT'S UNUSUAL BUT NOT.
THERES A CERTAIN POLITICAL
ASPECT TO IT.
CERTAINLY TRUMP IS DEEPLY
UNPOPULAR WITH VOTERS IN NEW
YORK STATE AS HE IS IN MOST
COASTAL AREAS.
IN THE CASE OF LETICIA JAMES, AN
AWFUL LOT OF BUSINESS IN NEW
YORK.
THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OF NEW YORK
STATE, SHE MAKES SURE THEY ARE
DONE IN A LEGAL FASHION.
SHE HAS MAKE PLATFORM.
IT UNITES DEMOCRATS.
A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T LIKE
DONALD TRUMP.
>>> YOU'RE SAYING DECLARING WAR
ON DONALD TRUMP, YOU CAN ALSO
SAY HE'S DECLARING FOR 2020.
>> LET ME ASK YOU ABOUT THAT.
WE KNOW HE SAID AS PART OF HIS
CAMPAIGN, NO.
I'M STAYING HERE, GOING TO SERVE
OUT TWO YEARS.
>> I RECALL A JUNIOR SENATOR
FROM ILLINOIS MAKING THE SAME
PROMISE BEFORE 2008.
JUST TO FINISH MY POINT, I
THOUGHT IT WAS VERY NOTICEABLE
EVEN IN GOVERNOR CUOMO'S
CAMPAIGN AD, PARTLY BECAUSE HE
KNEW HE WAS GOING TO CRUISE TO
RE-ELECTION, HOW MUCH THOSE
CAMPAIGN ADS WERE FOCUSED ON
PRESIDENT TRUMP AND THIS WAS A
BATTLE AGAINST PRESIDENT TRUMP.
THAT WAS HIS PITCH.
HE WASN'T TRYING TO SELL NEW
YORK VOTERS NECESSARILY ON HIS
ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS GOVERNOR SO
MUCH AS TO SET HIMSELF UP AS A
NATIONAL FIGURE AND OPPONENT TO
TRUMP.
>> CAN HE LEGITIMATELY SAY I
SAID I WASN'T GOING TO RUN, I'VE
CHANGED MY MIND.
>> THE PUBLIC DOESN'T EXTRACT
ANY PENALTY.
I TAKE IT AS A GIVEN EVERY
GOVERNOR, SENATOR, CONGRESSMAN
AND PROBABLY BOARD OF SELECT
MEMBER LOOKS IN THE MIRROR IN
THE MORNING AND SEES A FUTURE
PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.
THAT'S JUST ONE OF THE
CHARACTERISTICS OF BEING IN
POLITICS.
ABSOLUTELY IT APPLIES TO ANDREW
CUOMO.
>> HE ALSO NEEDS TO REMEMBER,
SHORE UP THE PROGRESSIVE LEFT
WING IN HIS PARTY IF HE WANTS TO
HAVE A SHOT AT 2020.
>> WE'RE TALKING ABOUT 2020.
WE CAN'T HELP OURSELVES.
WE'RE BARELY 24 HOURS AFTER THIS
ELECTION AND WE'RE ALREADY
SAYING, ALL RIGHT.
LOOKING AT THE RESULTS OF THIS
ELECTION, DID EITHER OF YOU,
REPUBLICAN SIDE, DEMOCRATIC
SIDE, DID EITHER OF YOU SEE ANY
EMERGING STAR?
OR DID YOU SEE ANY PEOPLE WE
THOUGHT WERE EMERGING STARS WHO
BASICALLY FELL OUT OF THE SKY.
>> ARE YOU MENTIONING BETO BY
ANY CHANCE?
>> BETO O'ROURKE.
>> HOWEVER, THIS IS AN UNUSUAL
POLITICAL WORLD WE LIVE IN.
LOSING DOESN'T HELP.
>> FIRST THING TO REMEMBER THE
CAST OF POTENTIAL CANDIDATES IN
2020 HAS ABOUT 4,000 NAMES ON IT
RIGHT NOW.
FRANKLY, THEY ARE ALL PLAUSIBLE.
YOU CAN'T SAY MY HOMETOWN MAYOR
MITCH LANDRIEU IS ON THE LIST,
KAMALA HARRIS.
WE COULD NAME DOZENS AND DOZENS
OF PEOPLE, FRANKLY ANY ONE IS A
PLAUSIBLE CANDIDATE.
>> ELIZABETH WARREN IS LESS
PLAUSIBLE NOW THAN SHE WAS TWO
OR THREE WEEKS AGO.
>> SHE WON.
>> SHE CREATED A MESS WITH HER
DNA TESTING.
IN 2020 ON THE DEMOCRATIC SIDE
IT'S GOING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE IT
DID IN 2016 ON THE REPUBLICAN
SIDE.
THIS HUGE LINEUP OF DEMOCRATS
VYING FOR THIS NOMINATION.
MY QUESTION WILL BE, HOW MUCH
DAMAGE ARE THEY GOING TO DO TO
EACH OTHER AND HOW MUCH THEY ARE
GOING TO PUSH THE PARTY TO THE
LEFT.
>> YOU HAVE PEOPLE LINING UP AND
ALL THEY ARE DOING IS TAKING
SHOTS AT EACH OTHER AND TAKING
EACH OTHER OUT.
>> THEY MIGHT BE DOING IT OVER
THE NEXT TWO YEARS.
>> WE SAY THAT EVERY TIME.
PEOPLE OVERCAME THAT.
BARACK OBAMA WAS A SURPRISE
NOMINEE, AND HE DID PRETTY WELL,
DIDN'T HE?
>> A QUESTION FOR YOU WITH A
MINUTE LEFT.
COMING BACK TO WHAT WE TALKED
ABOUT BEFORE, THE PROMINENCE OF
WOMEN IN THE CONVERSATION
LEADING UP TO THE ELECTION AND
SUCCESSES OF WOMEN ON BOTH
PARTIES AS A CONSEQUENCE OF
THAT.
I SAW SOMEBODY, A COMMENTATOR
SAY ONE OF THE THINGS PERHAPS
THIS ELECTION SET UP WITH THE
NOTION OF GETTING SO MANY MORE
PEOPLE OUT TO VOTE, SO MANY OF
THEM BEING WOMEN, THAT THIS
MIGHT BE THE BETTER SCENARIO,
TALK ABOUT THE DEMOCRATS, FOR A
WOMAN TO EMERGE AS A CANDIDATE
AND TO WIN.
>> I MEAN THAT'S SENSIBLE.
THAT'S A REASONABLE ARGUMENT.
CLEARLY PART OF THE REAL BASE OF
THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IS WOMEN.
BLACK WOMEN ESPECIALLY.
WHAT A GROUP THAT DOES TURNPIKE
OUT LOYALLY FOR DEMOCRATS.
YOU KNOW, THERE'S 20 OTHER
SCENARIOS WE CAN COME UP WITH.
DO YOU WANT A PROGRESSIVE THAT
REVS UP THE BASE, A MODERATE.
I CAN GIVE YOU TEN SCENARIOS,
EACH ONE IS RATIONAL.
>> EACH ONE CAN CHANGE DAY TO
DAY.
>> THE ANSWER IS START YOUR
ENGINES, BUCKLE UP.
WE'VE GOT TWO MORE YEARS AND A
LOT OF STUFF GOING ON.
AMY, IT'S ALWAYS SUCH A PLEASURE
TO HAVE YOU HERE.
>> THANK YOU.
>> WE FEEL SMARTER AFTER
LISTENING TO THE TWO OF YOU.
THANK YOU SO MUCH.
