THE 19 50s TOP LEGEND KNOWN FOR AIN'T THAT A SHAME SHAPED THE MUSIC INDUSTRY WITH A CAREER SPANNING OVER SIX DECADES.

WE MARRIED AT 19.

SHE WAS SO RELIEVED.

SHE WAS A DAUGHTER OF THE GREAT COUNTRY HALL OF FAME SINGER.

SHE'S SEEN ENOUGH SINGING, THE DEMANDS ON A PERFORMER IF HE'S SUCCESSFUL, SHE DIDN'T WANT ANY MORE OF THAT.

I WON A NATIONAL TALENT CONTEST, FORERUNNER OF SHOWS LIKE 'AMERICAN IDOL.'

TED MACK AMATEUR HOUR, NATIONAL TV, WON THREE WEEKS IN A ROW TO MY AMAZEMENT.

LED TO A RECORDING CONTRACT, I HAD HITS AIN'T THAT A SHAME, FROM THEN ON, FROM MARCH OF '55 TO LATE FEBRUARY '56 WHEN ELVIS HIT WITH HEART BREAK HOTEL, AND THAT 11-MONTH PERIOD I HAD SIX SELLING SINGLES.

SHIRLEY REALIZED I WAS NEVER GOING TO BE THE SCHOOL TEACHER AND LOCATED PREACHER.

BUT WE STILL DETERMINED WHEN WE MOVED FROM NEW JERSEY BY THEN TO CALIFORNIA THAT WE WERE GOING TO LIVE BY WHAT I CALL TENNESSEE STANDARDS, THINGS I HAD BEEN BROUGHT UP, BELIEVED, AND THAT'S THE WAY WE RAISED OUR DAUGHTERS, FOUR DAUGHTERS IN HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA.

THEY ALL MARRIED GOOD CHRISTIAN GUYS, HAD GIVEN US 16 GRAND KIDS, THOSE GRAND KIDS HAVE GIVEN US NINE GREAT GRAND KIDS.

THESE PRINCIPLES BY WHICH I HAD LIVED, I KNOW THEY SEEM SQUARE TO SOME PEOPLE.

IT MAKES ME OUT MODED OR IRRELEVANT.

PARTICULARLY IN HOLLYWOOD.

I GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE AT AGE 23 IN MY CAP AND GOWN, I WAS ON THE COVER OF TV GUIDE.

THE SHOW WAS NUMBER ONE, AND I'M 23, AND ALL OF THE MAJOR STARS WERE COMING ON AND SINGING WITH ME.

I HAD ALREADY MADE SEVERAL MOVIES.

I HAD HAD A NUMBER OF HIT RECORDS.

I WAS ELVIS'S ONLY COMPETITION, AND THAT LAST HALF OF THE '50s.

AND I GRADUATE MAGNA CUM LAUDE FROM COLUMBIA IN THE MIDDLE OF ALL THIS WITH FOUR KIDS.

I HAD SUCCESS ACTUALLY IN MORE GENRES OF MUSIC FROM POP, ROCK, GOSPEL, COUNTRY, PATRIOTIC, FOLK, SPOKEN WORD, HEAVY METAL, AND NOW I THINK I'M THE ONLY PERFORMER AND ANY SINGER EVER TO HEADLINE THE SAME VENUES OVER 50 AND NOW 60 YEARS APART.

IT'S AMAZING TO HEADLINE THE SAME VENUES, STILL SINGING, STILL RECORDING, AND TRYING TO LEARN HOW TO RETIRE.

I JUST HAVE NOT GOT THE HANG OF IT YET.

BUT I AM TELLING EVERYBODY THAT I'M ON MY LAST GO ROUND.

I BROKE MY JAW AFTER DOING THE EASTER SEAL TELETHON REHEARSAL.

I WAS COMING HOME ON A BIKE FROM CENTURY CITY.

AND I HIT THE STORM DRAIN OVER BY THE BEVERLEY HILTON AND MY BIKE, THE TIRE WENT DOWN IN THE DRAIN AND MY JAW DID, TOO, AND I BROKE MY JAW.

I CAME HOME FROM THE HOSPITAL.

ON THE TABLE WAS A BOX, AND IN THE BOX WAS THIS CATCHER'S MASK.

AND THIS CARD THAT CAME WITH IT.

'DEAR PAT, DUMMY, NEXT TIME USE THIS.

I LOVE YOU, FRANCIS ALBERT.'

NOBODY BUT FRANK SINATRA WOULD BUY A CATCHERS MASK.

THAT WAS HIM.

THAT WAS THE CAMARADERIE THAT WE HAD.

I LOVE THIS PICTURE OF BOB.

HE PUT HIS ARMS AROUND ME.

LOOK AT THAT, THE WAY HE'S HUGGING ME.

WHAT A FRIEND.

> I'M HOPING THAT ALTHOUGH I'M TOO LOQUACIOUS, THAT I CAN MAKE FOR GOOD HOW I'M LIVING MY LIFE.
