>> EDIE FALC OO WITH OUTSTANDING
PERFORMANCES PORTRAYING DYNAMIC
AND STRONG WOMAN CHARACTERS SUCH
AS CARMEN SOPRANO AND NURSE
JACKY.
SHE PORTRAYS ANOTHER FASCINATING
WOMAN, PALLY NEWMAN WHO WAS A
CLOSE POLITICAL CONFIDENT OF
ALBANY MAYOR, ONE OF THE LONGEST
SERVING MAYORS IN AMERICAN
HISTORY.
AND THE BOUNDS OF LOVE, LOYALTY
AND FEMALE POWER.
IN THE MALE DOMINATED WORLD OF
PATRONAGE POLITICS.
>> THAT'S NOT THE WAY IT SHOULD
WORK, BILL.
RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERY SINGLE
ONE, REPUBLICAN, WHATEVER,
COMMUNIST.
MAYBE NOT COMMUNIST.
BILL, AS A COMEDIAN, YOU ARE THE
BACKBONE OF THE PARTY, OKAY.
THE ASSISTANCE YOUR AUNT GOT
THAT YOUR MOTHER SHOULD HAVE
GOT.
NOW THE PEOPLE IN THE COMMITTEE
WHO KNOWS THEIR NAME, HE KNOWS
THEIR CHILDREN'S NAMES.
RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINGING IN THE
VOTERS AND HE MAKES SURE THOSE
VOTERS ARE DEMOCRAT.
>> EDIE FALCO JOINS US NOW.
THERE'S A CAMPAIGN THAT YOU'RE
PARTICIPATING IN.
BUT WHY YOU LOVE NEW YORK IN 25
WORDS.
I ONLY HAD FIVE.
GETTING TO SEE THE TRUTH.
IT WAS WONDERFUL.
>> YOU'RE SO NICE.
>> WE WERE KNOCKED OVER.
>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
>> AND WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED
IT, A PLAY ABOUT 1977 ALBANY
POLITICS.
BUT IT'S WONDERFUL.
>> THANK YOU SO MUCH.
>> SO THE PLAY IS BASED ON A
REAL HISTORICAL CHARACTER.
>> YEAH.
>> AND IN FACT ALL THE MAJOR
CHARACTERS HAVE BEEN WRITTEN
ABOUT A LOT AND NOT ONLY THAT
THE GRANDDAUGHTER OF THE
CHARACTER YOU PLAY IS OUR VERY
OWN JUNIOR SENATOR, KIRSTEN JILL
BRAND.
>> I HAVE TO TELL YOU WHEN I
READ THE SCRIPT WRITTEN BY SHARA
WRIGHT, FIRST OF ALL I WAS FAN
OF "THE OTHER PLACE" THAT LAURIE
MET CALF WAS IN AND SHE'S ONE OF
MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE ACTRESSES.
I TRREAD IT AND RESPONDED TO TH
SCRIPT AND THE CHARACTERS AND
RELATIONSHIPS, ALL THE STUFF I
ALWAYS RESPOND TO WHEN I'M
DECIDING WHETHER IT'S SOMETHING
I WANT TO WORK ON AND IT WAS
ONLY SOME TIME AFTER THAT I WAS
TOLD THIS IS A TRUE STORY OR
BASED AT LEAST ON TRUE PEOPLE.
>> HOW DO YOU USUALLY PREPARE
FOR A CHARACTER?
>> I HAVE NO IDEA.
I GOT TO TELL YOU I HAVE NO
IDEA.
THE SAME WAY I PREPARE FOR
ANYTHING.
IT WAS SOME TIME AGO WHEN I READ
THE SCRIPT AND SAID YES.
IT HADN'T BEEN CAST.
WE DIDN'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT
IT.
ALL I HAD WAS THE DIRECTOR SCOTT
ELLIOTT AND I DON'T READ IT
AGAIN.
I LEAVE TULOAN UNTIL ALL THE
PIECES ARE TOGETHER, UNTIL WE'RE
IN REHEARSAL BECAUSE YOB KNOW MY
BRAIN WILL START TO WORK ON IT
IN SOME WAY BEFORE EVERYTHING'S
BEEN PLACED.
SO I LEAVE IT ALONE AND WHEN
WE'RE ALL TOGETHER AND WE WANT
TO BUILD THE THING TOGETHER IS
WHEN I START.
>> I HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO SNEAK
WONDERFUL LINDA JACKSON.
AND I ASKED HOW SHE PREPARES AND
SHE SAID SHE STARTS TO LEARN HOW
TO LOOK THROUGH THE CHARACTER'S
EYES.
I WONDER HOW THE WORLD LOOKS
THROUGH HOLLY NEWMAN'S EYES
>> I WOULD SAY SHE HAS AN IDEA
OF THE WAY SHE WANTS THINGS TO
BE AND THINKS IT MUST BE THE
BEST WAY TO PEOPLE.
THERE IS GENERAL ALTRUISM THERE.
SHE MENTIONS A NUMBER OF TIMES
THAT DEMOCRATS ARE PEOPLE WHO
CARE ABOUT PEOPLE AND I THINK
THAT AT LEAST WAS THE ORIGIN OF
HER INTEREST IN POLITICS.
I IMAGINE MAYBE EVERYBODY'S
ORIGINAL INTEREST.
>> THE CONSISTENT UNDERCURRENT
IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP OR PALLY'S
RELATIONSHIP WITH THE MAYOR.
THEY'RE, AS IN REAL LIFE, THE
PLAY TALKS ABOUT HOW THERE ARE
RUMORS THAT THEY WERE LOVERS
BECAUSE SHE WORKED FOR HIM FOR
40 YEARS.
THE PLAY SEEMS TO PUNCTUATE
THAT.
>> WHAT KIND?
>> I THINK IT'S THE KIND THAT
EXISTS ALL OVER THE PLACE THAT
IS CATEGORILESS.
YOU KNOW SHE LOVED THESE TWO MEN
BUT I THINK HER HUSBAND, PETER
ALSO LOVED THE MAYOR IN HIS OWN
WAY.
THEY HAD A THREESOME PACT,
FRIENDSHIP AND WHATEVER ELSE
THAT MIGHT BE.
>> THROUGH THIS SUBTHEME THAT
YOU SEE THE VULNERABILITY OF HER
WHICH ACTUALLY ACCENTUATES THE
STRENGTH.
LIKE THE SALT IN THE CHOCOLATE.
WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE STRENGTH
THING CARE AND THE STRENGTH IN
CHARACTERS YOU HAD THE
OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY.
ARE THEY JUST AS SCARCE IN YOUR
EXPERIENCE AS THEY HAVE BEEN?
STRONG WOMEN CHARACTERS?
>> I GOT TO SAY I DON'T KNOW.
AND I'VE HEARD THAT THROUGHOUT
ALL MY YEARS OF WORK THAT IT'S
HARD TO FIND GOOD ROLES FOR
WOMEN.
I HAVE BEEN EXCEEDINGLY LUCKY
THAT I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO HAPPEN
ABON AND I'M DRAWN TO THE KINDS
OF ROLES THAT ARE COMPLICATED
AND RICH AND -- IT SEEMS LIKE
THEY'VE BEEN THERE WHEN I LOOKED
FOR THEM.
AND I THINK THEY MIGHT BE MORE
PLENTIFUL NOW, JUST BASED ON
WHAT'S ON TELEVISION AND AROUND.
THAT STORIES ARE BEING WRITTEN
ABOUT COMPLICATED PEOPLE THAT
ARE LIKABLE AND AWFUL AT THE
SAME TIME.
LIKE MANY PEOPLE I LOVE.
>> I WOULD BE REMISS IF I DIDN'T
MENTION YOUR CAST MATES WHO ARE
WONDERFUL AS WELL.
I LOVE THAT GUY.
I SEEN HIM ON THE SUBWAY ALL THE
TIME.
>> THEY'RE GREAT.
COULDN'T HAVE DONE BETTER I
THINK.
>> CONGRATULATIONS.
IT'S A WONDERFUL PLAY.
I MEAN IT WITH ALL MY HEART.
>> IT WAS A PLEASURE.
THANK YOU.
>> PLAYING THROUGH OCTOBER 28TH.
