>>> GOOD EVENING.
WELCOME TO "METROFOCUS."
IT'S BEEN LESS THAN A WEEK SINCE
MICHAEL COHEN PLED GUILTY TO
CRIMINAL CHARGES STATING THAT HE
BROKE CAMPAIGN FINANCE LAWS AT
THE DIRECTION OF THEN CANDIDATE
DONALD TRUMP.
IT WAS A POLITICAL BOMBSHELL
THAT ROCKED WASHINGTON AND
PROMPTED RENEWED CALLS FOR
CONGRESS TO BEGIN IMPEACHMENT
PROCEEDINGS AGAINST THE
PRESIDENT.
WHILE THAT STILL REMAINS OFF THE
TABLE ACCORDING TO CONGRESSIONAL
DEMOCRATS, WHAT IS CLEAR IS THAT
THE INVESTIGATION INTO TRUMP'S
FORMER LAWYER HAS BROUGHT
FEDERAL PROSECUTORS CLOSE ARE
THAN EVER TO PRESIDENT TRUMP AND
HIS INNER CIRCLE.
THE STORY OF MICHAEL COHEN'S
DOWNFALL AND ULTIMATELY THAT OF
THE PRESIDENT HAS A NEW YORK
TWIST.
THAT'S THE FOCUS OF A NEW PIECE
BY OUR FRIENDS AT CITY AND
STATE.
JOINING US TO TELL US ABOUT THAT
AND ALSO TO BREAK DOWN
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
ABOUT WHAT'S HAPPENING THIS WEEK
IN POLITICS IS AT THIS TIME AND
STATE EDITOR JOHN LINTZ.
YOU HAD A STORY WHICH BASICALLY
MADE THE POINT THAT IF COHEN'S
INDICTMENT LEADS TO TRUMP'S
IMPEACHMENT COULD BE BECAUSE OF
UBER AND LYFT.
>> A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN
PAYING ATTENTION TO THE PAYOFFS
FOR ALLEGED AFFAIRS INVOLVING
THE PRESIDENT.
MICHAEL COHEN, HIS FIXER AND
ATTORNEY WHO FLIPPED ON THE
PRESIDENT, A LOT OF HIS WEALTH
FOR A LONG TIME HAS BEEN WRAPPED
UP IN TAXI MEDALLIONS.
IF YOU PAY ATTENTION TO THE NEWS
IN NEW YORK, YOU KNOW THE TAXI
INDUSTRY IS NOT DOING WELL.
THAT'S REALLY COINCIDED WITH
UBER, LYFT, RIDE-HAILING APPS.
THE TAXIS ARE STRUGGLING.
THE MEDALLIONS HAVE BEEN AN
INVESTMENT FOR CERTAIN FOLKS,
INCLUDING MICHAEL COHEN.
HE HAD A LOT OF MONEY INVESTED
IN THAT.
WHERE THE WRONGDOING COMES IN,
IT LOOKS LIKE HE TOOK OUT A LOT
OF CREDIT, LOANS AGAINST THIS AS
COLLATERAL.
THAT'S PLUMMETED, PUT HIM IN
TROUBLE FINANCIALLY.
MAY HAVE LED TO WHERE HE IS
TODAY.
>> THAT'S THE LEVERAGE THE FEDS
HAD ON HIM FOR HIM TO FLIP ON
THE PRESIDENT.
AS PART OF THAT STORY, THE
LONGTIME CFO OF THE TRUMP
ORGANIZATION, ALLEN WEISSELBERG,
WAS GIVEN AN IMMUNITY DEAL.
>> BY THE FEDS.
>> THAT SOUNDS LIKE GETTING THE
BOOKKEEPER OF THE MOP.
THAT SOUNDS --
>> WE WILL PAY ATTENTION TO
THAT.
IN ADDITION, DAVID PECKER, THE
HEAD OF THE NATIONAL ENQUINQUITE
THE "NATIONAL ENQUIRER," THE
FORMER ADULT FILM ACTRESS, HE IS
ALSO COOPERATING TO SOME DEGREE.
STAY TUNED ON THAT.
>> REALLY CLOSE TO THE INNER
CIRCLE.
SPEED CAMERAS AROUND SCHOOLS IN
NEW YORK CITY.
THEY WENT DARK ABOUT A MONTH AGO
BECAUSE THE STATE SENATE DIDN'T
VOTE TO EXTEND THEM.
DURING LAST SESSION.
NEW DEVELOPMENTS ON THAT.
WHAT ARE THEY?
>> THIS WAS A HOT TOPIC AT THE
END OF SESSION.
DIDN'T GET THE DEAL DONE.
THE SENATE REPUBLICANS HAVE BEEN
CRITICIZED FOR NOT PASSING THIS
LEGISLATION TO RENEW SPEED
CAMERAS IN SCHOOLS.
A LOT OF LIVES SAVED.
CHILDREN PROTECTED.
THE NEW DEAL IS THE NEW YORK
CITY COUNCIL IS TRYING TO TAKE
MATTERS INTO ITS OWN HANDS.
THEY ARE WORKING WITH THE
GOVERNOR WHO WILL PASS EXECUTIVE
AUTHORITY TO ALLOW THIS TO BE
RENEWED AS WELL AS BILL de
BLASIO IS WORKING WITH THE
GOVERNOR --
>> WOW.
THAT'S BREAKING NEWS.
>> THEY WANT THESE BACK AND
RUNNING WHEN SCHOOL STARTS ON
THE 5th.
THAT WAY IF YOU ARE DRIVING
THROUGH A SPEED ZONE AND YOU ARE
SPEEDING, YOU GET A TICKET.
>> THE GOVERNOR WILL BE DEBATING
CYNTHIA NIXON FOR THE FIRST AND
ONLY DEBATE THEY WILL HAVE
BEFORE THE PRIMARY SEPTEMBER
13th.
IN 2014, GOVERNOR CUOMO DIDN'T
DEBATE HIS OPPONENT SAYING
DEBATES CAN BE A DISSERVICE TO
DEMOCRACY.
WHAT HAS MADE HIM CHANGE HIS
MIND?
>> I THINK CYNTHIA NIXON HAD A
HIGH PROFILE TO BEGIN WITH AS AN
ACTRESS AND ADVOCATE.
I THINK SHE'S REALLY STRUCK A
NERVE ARE A LOT OF VOTERS ON THE
LEFT.
YOU HAVE SEEN ANDREW CUOMO SHIFT
TO THE LEFT.
IN THIS ENVIRONMENT, A LOT OF
WOMEN ARE RUNNING FOR OFFICE.
A LOT OF LIBERALS AND
PROGRESSIVES ARE RILED UP DUE TO
DONALD TRUMP IN THE WHITE HOUSE.
IT COULD HAVE BACKFIRED IF HE
SEWED, NO DEBATE.
THAT SAID, I THINK IT'S HIS TO
LOSE AS LONG AS HE AVOIDS GAFFS.
POLLS SHOW HIM UP 30 OR MORE.
>> NIXON'S CAMPAIGN SAYS 30
POINTS ARE MISLEADING.
THE POLLS AREN'T REACHING VOTERS
COMING OUT FOR HER.
>> TO THAT POINT, TWO THINGS.
THE RACE AGAINST JOE CROWLEY,
THERE WAS LET POLLING.
THERE'S BEEN MORE POLLING AND IT
HAS BEEN CONSISTENT.
IT'S THE ENTIRE STATE OF NEW
YORK.
I DON'T KNOW IN QUEENS AND BRONX
WILL BE REPLICATED IN THE
GOVERNOR'S RACE.
GOVERNMENT -- THE GOVERNOR,
WHAT'S HE DOING TO GET OUT OF
THE HOLE WHEN HE SAID THE
GOVERNMENT ISN'T THAT GREAT.
>> IF HE SAID SOMETHING LIKE
THAT WEDNESDAY, THAT COULD HURT
HIM.
APART FROM THAT, HE HAS A STRONG
PATHWAY FORWARD.
>> JOHN, THANKS FOR JOINING US
TODAY.
