TONIGHT ON METROFOCUS

The push to legalize. Thousands are expected at a planned pro-pot parade and rally here in Manhattan tomorrow. New York City’s Public Advocate Letitia James is here with the details. Sex workers unite to fight an anti-trafficking bill that they say puts them and others in serious harm’s way. Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Duke Ellington, were more than music legends, they were “the jazz ambassadors.” And now we share their untold story. Soothing through song. In tony suburbs, homeless shelters, or even in prisons, creating the mother-child bond is essential for wellbeing. Tonight, we’ll take you inside the visionary “lullaby project”.

THOSE STORIES AND MORE AS METROFOCUS STARTS RIGHT NOW.

> GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO METROFOCUS I'M RAFAEL PI RAMAN.

NEW YORKERS WILL SET TO SHOW UP FOR THE ANNUAL CANNABIS PARADE, PROTESTERS CALLING FOR AN END TO MARIJUANA PROHIBITION AND DEMANDING END TO RATIONALLY MOST MOTIVATED ARRESTS.

THE TOP FILBERS HISTORICALLY SHOW OPPOSITION.

DESPITE HAVING ESTABLISHED A MEDICAL MARIJUANA PROGRAM IN THE STATE AND A STUDY TO EXPLORE THE IMPACT OF RECREAKSLE LEGALIZATION.

GOVERNOR COUPLEA REMAINED RELUCTANTANT TO ENDORSE LEGAL STATION.

WHILE THE GOVERNOR AND MAYOR RARELY SEE EYE TO EYE ON THIS THEY APPEAR TO BE ON THE SAME PAGE.

WITH THE MAYOR OPPOSING LEGALIZATION BACKUP.

BUT FOR ANOTHER PROMINENT NEW YORK ELECTED OFFICIAL ENOUGH IS ENOUGH AND THE TIME FOR LEGALIZATION IS NOW.

THAT IS LA TISSUA JAMES WHO JOINS US.

PUBLIC ADVOCATE JAMES WELCOME BACK.

THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME.

PUBLIC ADVOCATE JAMES, THE ISSUE OF MARIJUANA LEGALIZATION IS NOT NEW.

NINE STATES PLUS WASHINGTON, D.C. HAVE LEGALIZED IT.

WHY DID YOU COME TO BELIEVE IT WAS IMPORTANT TO FOCUS ON THIS NOW.

IT'S ALSO IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT NEW JERSEY UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF THE NEW GOVERNOR IS CONSIDERING LEGALIZING MARIJUANA.

LISTEN, WE ARE -- WE HAVE TO FACE FACTS.

ONE THE WAR ON DRUGS HAS BEEN A COMPLETE FAILURE.

IN FACT THE WAR ON DRUGS IS NOTHING MORE THAN A WAR OR POOR PEOPLE AND PEOPLE OF COLOR.

80% OF THE PEOPLE CONVICTED OF SMALL POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA ARE PEOPLE OF COLOR, BLACK AND LATINO, AND MOST OF THEM Le-INCOME INDIVIDUALS IN HE CITY OF NEW YORK.

AT THE SAME TIME THE USE IS THE SAME TESLA THE USE AMONGST RACES AND ETHNIC GROUPS ARE THE SAME.

IT'S ON AVERAGE THE SAME BUT ENFORCEMENT UNFORTUNATELY -- UNFORTUNATELY IS PRIMARILY DISPROPORTIONALLY AFFECTING PEOPLE OF COLOR AND POOR PEOPLE IN OUR CITY AND STATE.

I SAY LET'S REGULATE IT AND LEGALIZE IT.

AND LET'S USE THOSE RESOURCES AS A RESULT OF THE LEGALIZATION TO INVEST IN COMMUNITIES THAT UNFORTUNATELY HAVE BEEN DEVASTATESED BY THIS.

SPECIFICALLY INVEST IN WHAT.

SO INVEST IN-HOUSING.

INVEST IN SCHOOLS.

INVEST IN PARKS AND OPEN SPACE.

INVEST IN EMPLOYMENT.

INVEST IN EDUCATION AND HIGHER EDUCATION.

INVEST IN JOB TRAINING.

AREAS AND RESOURCES THAT HAVEN'T BEEN FUNDED IN A LONG TIME.

AND PARTICULARLY AT THIS TIME WHEN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS NOT COOPERATING WITH MUNICIPALITIES AND/OR STATES SFLA BUT I MEAN THERE ARE SOME LEGITIMATE CONCERNS ABOUT LEGALIZING MARIJUANA.

FOR EXAMPLE THERE IS A CONCERN THAT ALLOWING FOR PROFIT BUSINESSES TO SELL MARIJUANA COULD LEAD TO TO AGGRESSIVE MARKETING TO PEOPLE WHO ARE ADDICTED TO THE PRODUCTS JUST AS HAPPENS WITH ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO WHO MAKE MOST OF THE PROFITS BY SELLING TO PEOPLE WHO ARE SERIOUSLY ADDICTED TO THE PRODUCTS.

HOW DO YOU RESPOND TO THAT.

TO THE PROHIB HISSING ON ALCOHOL ON CIGARETTES OBVIOUSLY FAILED AND WE LEGALIZED THAT.

WE ARE TALKING ABOUT REGULATION.

AND WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT A DISPENSARY ON EVERY CORNER.

AND WE'RE ONLY TALKING ABOUT RECREATIONAL USE FOR ADULTS AND ADULTS ONLY.

IT'S IMPORTANT THAT INDIVIDUALS UNDERSTAND THAT IT WILL BE REGULATED.

THAT IT WILL BE TRACKED.

WHAT ABOUT THE HEALTH CONCERNS?

ONE NEW ZEALAND STUDY FOLLOWED TRACKED USERS MANY YEARS AND SHOWED OF AN AVERAGE DROP OF 8 POINTS OF IQ FOR PEOPLE CHRONICALLY USED.

AND THE POINTS NEVER COME.

AND A NORTHWESTERN STUDY SAYS IT'S A LOSS OF SHORT TERM AND LONG-TERM TERM MEMORY.

MOST OF THOSE STUDIES WERE BASED ON ABUSE WHERE INDIVIDUALS USE HIGH AMOUNTS OF MARIJUANA.

ANDWAY WE TALK ABOUT IS LIMITED USE REGULATED.

YOU'RE PREPARED TO WORK WITH THE GOVERNOR ON THIS.

YES I'VE SPOKEN TO THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, GOVERNOR CUOMO APPEAR WE AGREED TO LOOK AT THIS TOGETHER.

AS HE ANALYZES AND ISSUES A REPORT AND STUDIES THE ISSUE AND ANALYZES AGAIN ITS -- HOW IT'S BEEN HANDLED IN NINE STATES AND ITS IMPACT BOTH POSITIVELY AND NEGATIVELY.

AND I LOOK FORWARD AGAIN TO THE REPORT AND HIS RECOMMENDATIONS GOING FORWARD.

NOW, YOU SAID THAT YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND HOW A PROGRESSIVE COULD BE AGAINST LEGALIZATION OF MARIJUANA.

BASICALLY DIRECTED AT THE MAYOR.

IS THAT FAIR?

THE MAYOR IS A PROGRESSIVE GUY.

AND THERE ARE LEGITIMATE CONCERNS AS YOU YOURSELF HAVE SAID.

THERE ARE LEGITIMATE CONCERNS.

BUT LET'S BE HONEST THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK HAS BAKTED IN THE PAST HE SMOKED MARIJUANA.

AND SO I THINK SINCE WE ALREADY HAVE MEDICAL MARIJUANA HERE IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK AND IT'S GOING WELL, FOR THOSE INDIVIDUAL WHO IS ARE STRUGGLING AND SUFFERING AND THERE HAVE NOT BEEN ANY ADVERSE EFFECTS AND/OR IMPACTS, I THINK THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT WE CAN EXPLORE IN THE STATE OF NEW YORK JUST AS NEW JERSEY IS EXPLORING AND THE OTHER NINE STATES PLUS THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, AGAIN BECAUSE THE WAR ON DRUGS UNFORTUNATELY HAS HAD AN ADVERSE IMPACT ON COMMUNITIES OF CHLORCOLOR AND LOW INCOME KUNTZ IT'S DESTROYED THEM.

IT'S BEEN A COMPLETE FAILURE.

HOW DO YOU RESPOND TO THOSE SAYING YOU TAKING ON THIS ISSUE IS THE FIRST SALVO TO YOUR MAYORAL RUN IN 2021.

SO AGAIN WE ARE NOT FOCUSING ON THE FUTURE.

WHAT WE ARE DOING IS FOLKING ON THE ROYALTY AT A PUBLIC ADVOCATE IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK TAKING ON DIFFICULT ISSUES AND TAKING DIFFICULT STANDS.

AND I KNOW THIS IS A DIFFICULT ISSUE.

BUT I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT INDIVIDUALS UNDERSTAND THAT THE WAR ON DRUGS HAS FAILED.

AND THAT THE PROHIBITION AGAINST ALCOHOL THERE WAS A SIMILAR CONCERN WITH RESPECT TO ALCOHOL AND WE REGULATED IT.

AND AGAIN WE SHOULD DO THE SAME WITH MARIJUANA BECAUSE TOO MANY LIVES UNFORTUNATELY HAVE BEEN DEVASTATED AS A RESULT OF THIS WHERE ON POOR PEOPLE.

BUT YOU ARE RUNNING IN 2021 CORRECT, FOR MAYOR.

I'M CONSIDERING MY OPTIONS IN THE FUTURE.

BUT AT THIS POINT I'M JUST FOCUSING ON THE BEING A PUBLIC ADVOCATE.

WELL THANK YOU VERY MUCH 37 IT'S A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE AND A VERY IMPORTANT ISSUE.

THANK YOU FOR TAKING IT ON AWNING THANK YOU FOR JOINING US.

♪♪ ♪♪

> PRESIDENT TRUMP HAS SIGNED A PAIR OF ANTI-SEX TRAFFICKING BILLS INTO LAW.

THE LEGISLATION WHICH RECEIVED UNANIMOUS BIPARTISAN SUPPORT INTENDS TO HOLD ACCOUNTABLE WEBSITES THAT PROFIT FROM ADVERTISING SEXUAL SERVICES FROM ADULTS AND CHILDREN FORCED INTO SEX WORK AGAINST THEIR WILL.

PRIOR TO THE BILL SIGNING, CRAIG'S LIST TOOK DOWN THE PERSONS SECTION AND THE WEBSITE BACK PAGE.COM WAS REMOVED BY THE FBI.

BUT A GROWING NUMBER OF ADVOCATES WHO DEDICATE WORK TO FIGHTING SEX TRAFFICKING CLAIM THE LEGISLATION IS MISGUYED AND RUNS THE RISK OF MAKING SEX WORK LESS SAFE.

AMONG THOSE ACTIVISTS KATE D'ADAMO WHO I AM PLEASED TO WELCOME NOW.

THANK YOU FOR JOINING US.

WE APPRECIATE IT.

TO GET YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON THIS HERE IS LEGISLATION PASSED OVERWHELMINGLY BIPARTISAN SPOERPT.

WE RARELY SAY THAT ABOUT MUCH OUT OF WASHINGTON NOWADAYS.

AND I SUSPECT PEOPLE WOULD SAY, HOW COULD ANYBODY SAY THAT THESE ARE NOT GOOD PIECES OF LEGISLATION THAT RATHER THAN PROTECTING PEOPLE THAT THEY ARE DESIGNED TO PROTECT THEY CAN ACTUALLY BE HARMFUL TO SOME PEOPLE?

SO EXPLAIN TO US IF YOU WOULD WHY YOU ARE OPPOSED TO THIS LEGISLATION WHY YOU THINK IT'S PROBLEMATIC.

SURE.

AND YOU KNOW, THIS IS REALLY ONE OF THOSE INSTANCES WHERE THE INTENTION OF THE BILL AND THE IMPACT OF A BILL ARE SO VASTLY DIFFERENT.

AND SO, YOU KNOW, THE INTENTION OF THE BILL IS TO BE ABLE THOLD 30 PARTIES ACCOUNTABLE WE THEY KNOWINGLY FACILITATE TRAFFICKING.

THE PLM WAS.

THAT'S LAUDABLE.

I'M SURE JUST ABOUT EVERYBODY SAYS THAT'S A GOOD INTENTION, CORRECT?

SURE.

IF YOU KNOWINGLY FACILITATE THE EXPLOITATION OF ANOTHER PERSON THROUGH FORCE FRAUD OH OR COERCION YOU SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THAT.

THE QUESTION IS WHAT FORM THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE LAW TAKES.

AND THE WAY THE LAW WAS WRITTEN WAS NOT ACTUALLY TO TAKE A SCALPEL AND TRY TO DETERMINE WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE.

BUT TO SIMPLY LIABILITY WITH A LOT OF TERMINOLOGY THAT ACTUALLY ISN'T DEFINED IN LAW.

AND SO WHAT THIS LAW DID WAS CREATE THIS BRAND-NEW CIVIL AND NOT REALLY DEFINE WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE.

AND SO WHAT YOU ARE ASKING IS FOR ALL OF THE DIFFERENT WEBSITES TO ALL OF A SUDDEN MAKE A DECISION ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT THEY HAD THE LITIGATION BUDGET TO SUSTAIN NOT JUST ONE BUT 61 DIFFERENT GOVERNMENT LAWSUITS, PROVE THAT THEY WERE NOT KNOWINGLY FACILITATING.

LET ME JUMP IN FOR A SECOND.

BECAUSE YOU SAID SOME OF WEBSITES YOU FEEL HAVE A VALUE IN TERMS OF SAFETY AND PROTECTION OF SEX WORKERS.

EXPLAIN WHY IT IS THEN -- AGAIN LET'S USE THE TERM DISCONNECT.

A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK MY GOSH THESE WEBSITES ARE HORRIBLE, PREYING ON PEOPLE.

YET YOU SAY THEY HAVE A VALUE, A SAFETY VALUE.

HOW CAN THAT BE?

ABSOLUTELY.

THE ABILITY TO ADVERTISE ONLINE CREATED THE TUNE FOR PEOPLE TRADING SEX TO SCREEN CLIENTS FOR THE FIRST TIME.

TO IMPLEMENT THE STRATEGIES THAT I USED TO TEACH AND PEOPLE STILL TEACH.

RATHER THAN ON A STREET CORNER ESSENTIALLY, YES?

RATHER THAN -- SURE.

RATHER THAN ON THE STREET TO WORK IN A BROTHEL OR SOMEONE DOESN'T TO WORK FOR A THIRD PARTY HAVING ACCESS TO A WEBSITE PLATFORM MEANS THEY STAY SAFE AND DO IT ON THEIR OWN.

THERE IS A STUDY THAT CAME OUT STILL GOING THROUGH PEER REVIEW SAYING THE OPENING OF CRAIG LIST EE ROTTIC SERVICES SECTION WAS CORRELATED TO A 17% DROP IN FEMALE HOMICIDES.

WHEN YOU TALK TO THE AUTHORS THEY SAY THERE IS A LOT OF PIECES OF THIS BUT ULTIMATELY PEOPLE IN THE SEX TRADE MAKE UP SUCH A LARGE PERCENTAGES OF FEMALE HOMICIDE VICTIMS.

HAVING ACCESS TO SAFETY AND SCREENING TECHNIQUES, THE ABILITY TO KEEP YOURSELF SAFE, TO MEET SOMEONE IN A DESIGNATE THE PLACE THAT YOU HAVE MORE CONTROL OVER, TO BE ABLE TO DETERMINE IF YOU WANT SOMEONE TO COME WITH YOU, ALL OF THOSE THINGS ARE REMOVED IF YOU CABINET CAN'T ADVERTISE ONLINE.

AND SO THIS DIDN'T TAKE AWAY TRAFFICKING.

IT DIDN'T TAKE AWAY SEXWORK.

IT SIMPLY FORCED PEOPLE ALREADY IN THE SEX TRADE TO HAVE FEWER OGSS AND UNSAFE OPTIONS.

ONE OF THE THINGS YOU PLAN ON DOING IS ENGAGING IN A LOBBY EFFORT VISITING LEGISLATORS.

WHAT WILL YOU BE SAYING TO THEM IN TERMS OF WHAT THEY CAN DO, SORT OF A -- A TWO-TRACK APPROACH IF YOU WOULD.

ONE IS TO MAKE SURE WE ARE PROTECTING AGAINST FORCED INVOLVEMENT IN SEX WORK.

BUT AT THE SAME TIME PROTECTING THOSE SEX WORKERS WHO YOU JUST DESCRIBED TO US NOW?

WHAT SHOULD LEGISLATORS BE DOING.

FIRST AND FOREMOST WE ASK -- WE NEED TO CONSIDER THE COLLATERAL DAMAGE OF THE LAWS.

WE NEED TO CONSIDER HOW THESE WORK ON THE GROUND AND WHETHER OR NOT THEY ARE ACTUALLY ACHIEVING THE GOALS WE SET OUT.

SO THE FIRST THING IS ACCOUNTABILITY.

THE SECOND THING IS NOT FOR -- FROM HERE ON OUT -- REALLY ACTUALLY TALKING TO PEOPLE WHO ARE KWAKTED BY THE LAWS.

AND YOU KNOW, THAT'S REALLY TRUE ACROSS THE BOARD IN A LOT WAYS.

WHEN THERE IS A FARM BILL GOING THROUGH RIGHT NOW THAT CUTS S.N.A.P. BENEFITS.

AND THE IMPACT OF THAT IS THAT MORE PEOPLE ARE LIKELY TO BE FORCED IN UNDERGROUND ECONOMIES TO DO WHAT THEY HAVE TO DO TO SURVIVE.

SO YOU KNOW ARE YOU BRINGING IN PEOPLE RELIANT ON S.N.A.P.

BENEFITS TO TESTIFY ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS WITH THIS BILL?

SO FOR TRAFFICKING BILLS, THE BILLS THAT IMPACT PEOPLE THAT TRADE SEX ARE YOU BRINGING IN PEOPLE THAT HAVE TO LIVE UNDER THE LAW AND SAYING IT'S MAKING ME SAFER AND BETTER.

KATE, THIS HAS BEEN A INTERESTING AND REVEALING AND PROVOCATIVE AND INFORMATIVE CONVERSATION.

WE APPRECIATE YOU TAKING TIME TO TALK WITH US.

PERHAPS WE CAN CHAT DOWN THE ROAD A BIT AND SEE WHAT PROGRESS IS BEING MADE.

THANKS FOR JOINING US.

WE APPRECIATE IT.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

I CAN'T WAIT TO TALK ABOUT THE PROGRESS.

YOU BE WELL.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT DIZZY.

I DON'T THINK WE HAVE ANY TROUBLE VERTIGO THE PEOPLE TO OUR STYLE OF MUSIC.

THIS MIGHT BE A COOL WAR INSTEAD A COLD WAR.

VERY GOOD.

THE WEAPON WE USE IS THE COOL THE WEAPON WE USE IS THE COOL ♪♪ ♪♪

AND IT'S MY PLEASURE TO WELCOME TO THE PROGRAM THE JAZZ AMBASSADORS DIRECTOR HUGO BERGLY.

WELCOME TO THE PROGRAM.

THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME.

SUCH A GREAT PIECE OF AMERICAN HISTORY AND OF COURSE IN HOW OUR CULTURE PLAYS A PART IN THE WAY WE ARE SEEN IN THE WORLD.

BEFORE HE GET TO THAT.

LET'S TALK ABOUT CAN YOU PAINT A PICTURE FOR OUR AUDIENCE OF WHERE AMERICA WAS OR WHERE THE WORLD WAS LET'S SAY IN THE '50s.

BECAUSE ONE OF THE THINGS THAT STRUCK ME WAS PART OF THIS WAS BECAUSE THE SOVIET UNION WAS KIND OF BLOWING UP AMERICA'S SPOT IN TERMS OF HOW WE WERE ACTUALLY HANDLING DEMOCRACY IN OUR OWN CULTURE.

THE '50s IS SUCH A FASCINATING PERIOD OF WORLD HISTORY I THINK.

UM-HUM.

THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS GOING ON THAT ARE DEFINING THE MODERN WORLD COMING OUT OF WORLD WAR II.

AND THIS FILM REALLY RELIES ON THREE DIFFERENT THINGS THAT HAPPENED.

THE FIRST THING IS THE COLD WAR AND THIS ENTREFRMGMENT OF THE OPPOSITION OF SOVIET COMMUNISM AND AMERICAN DEMOCRACY.

THE SECOND THING IS THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT WITHIN THE UNITED STATES AND THE PUSH FOR FREEDOM FOR EQUAL RIGHTS TREATMENT FOR ALL AMERICANS.

VERY IMPORTANT.

EN AND THAT'S ALLIED TO AN INTERNATIONAL LIBERATION STRUGGLE AROUND THE END OF CLONIALISM AND COUNTRIES LIKE INDIA, AFRICAN COUNTRIES ASIAN COUNTRIES TRYING TO END CLONIALISM.

WE HAVE THE THREE CURRENT OF WORLD HISTORY HAPPENING TOGETHER.

AND IT'S A CALL DRAWN IN WHICH LOTS OF TENSIONS PERK LATE.

LET'S MOVE BACK TO THE STATES AND TALK ABOUT CONGRESSMAN CLAYTON POWELL JR.

HOW DID HE COME UP WITH THIS IDEA?

IN 195 A ALL OF THESE COUNTRIES, WHAT THEY CALLED THE NON-ALIGNED COUNTRY ASIAN, AFRICAN WITHIN INDIAN COUNTRIES GOT TOGETHER IN INDONESIA FOR A CONFERENCE.

AND IT WAS REALLY A LANDMARK GATHERING OF COUNTRIES REPRESENTED OVER HALF THE WORLD'S POPULATION.

FROM THE AMERICAN POINT OF VIEW THIS WAS SOMETHING TO BE WORRIED ABOUT, THAT ALL OF THE COUNTRIES WERE GETTING TOGETHER AND FIGURING OUT THEIR OWN POLICY AGENDA.

AND THEY VERY MUCH HAD THE IDEA THAT IF THESE COUNTRIES WERE NOT EXPLICITLY IN FAVOR OF AMERICA IN THE COLD WAR THAT THEY WERE AGAINST THEM.

SO AMERICA DECIDED NOT TO SEND ANYBODY TO THE CONFERENCE IN INDONESIA AND TRIED TO IGNORE IT.

ADAM CLAYTON POWELL JR. HAD DIFFERENT IDEAS.

HE GOT CREDENTIALED AS A JOURNALISTS.

FLEW TO THE MEETING AGAINST THE EE DIKTS OF THE STATE DEPARTMENT WHO DIDN'T WANT HIM TO GO.

AND HE WENT AND REACHED OUT TO THE COUNTRIES AND SAID WE AMERICANS WE'RE NOT PERFECT.

WE'RE ENGAGED IN A RACE STRUGGLE IN OUR OWN COUNTRY AND DRIVING TO IMPROVE.

BUT WE WANT TO BE FRIENDS WITH YOU.

AND WE'D LIKE TO FORGE COMPACTS WITH YOU THAT WENT OVER WELL.

HE CAME BACK TO WASHINGTON.

HE WAS TREATED TO A STANDING OVATION IN CONGRESS.

AND ALL OF A SUDDEN PEOPLE IN THE STATE DEPARTMENT SORT OF THOUGHT MAYBE HE IS RIGHT WE SHOULD ENGAGE WITH THE OTHER COUNTRIES RATHER THAN BEING FRIGHTENED OF WHERE THEY MIGHT GO IN THE COLD WAR.

AND THAT-

WELL YB YEAH, THAT SORT OF BRINGS US TO WHY JAZZ?

THAT'S WHAT I FOUND SO FASCINATING.

BECAUSE JAZZ WAS NOT A FORM OF MUSIC WELL ACCEPTED OR WELL RESPECTED BY EVERYONE IN THE COUNTRY AT THAT TIME.

THAT WAS LIKE ALTERNATIVE MUSIC.

SO WHY JAZZ MUSICIANS?

I THINK THERE ARE A COUPLE OF THINGS.

ONE, PARTICULARLY ADAM CLAYTON POUM'S HISTORY WAS IN HARLEM.

HE WAS FRIENDS WITH JAZZ MUSICIANS.

HE WAS MARRIED TO A JAZZ PAYENIST.

HE SAW THE POWER OF THE ARTISTS TO COMMUNICATE WITH ALL OF THESE NON-WHITE COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD.

HE SAW THAT AS A VERY STRONG CULTURAL CONTRIBUTION OF AMERICA THAT OTHER PEOPLE REALLY RESPECTED.

THE SECOND THING IS ON VOICE OF AMERICA RADIO WHICH WAS THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT PROPAGANDA RADIO STATION BROADCAST OUTSIDE OF THE UNITED STATES IN 195 A RADIO DJ BY THE NAME OF WILLIS CONOVER HAD LAUNCHED A JAZZ PROGRAM AND THE STATE DEPARTMENT AND VOA STARTED TO RECEIVE THOUSANDS OF LETTERS SAYING HOW MUCH PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD LOVED LISTENING TO THIS JAZZ SHOW.

SO THERE IS KIND OF TWO THINGS GOING ON THERE.

BUT ALL OF A SUDDEN PEOPLE IN THE STATE DEPARTMENT THINK, WOW, JAZZ COULD HELP US OUT IN THIS PROBLEM WE ARE HAVING BUT ALSO COULD APPEAL TO AUDIENCES AS A MEANS OF ENGAGING WITH AMERICA AND WHAT WE STAND FOR.

THIS IS A FASCINATING FILM.

AND AGAIN A LITTLE KNOWN PIECE OF AMERICAN HISTORY ACTUALLY REALLY IMPORTANT.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR HAVING ME.

ABSOLUTELY.

WILDEST DREAMS WAS COWRITTEN BY OUR NEXT GUEST WHO WROTE THE LYRICS FOR HER SON AFTER HE WAS BORN.

AND WE HEAR HE KNOWS ALL THE WORDS THAT HE IS 3 YEARS OLD.

SHE IS JOINED BY THE CARNEGIE HALL CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER.

ISAIAH I WAS RRD READY FOR HIM TO BREAK INTO SONG.

HE IS BEING VERY GOOD BY THE WAY.

SARAH LET ME START WITH YOU BY THIS WHERE DID THE IDEA COME FROM.

THE IDEA STARTED AT ZWRAK BY HOSPITALS IN THE BRONX AND CARNEGIE HALL WAS IN A MEETING THERE WITH STAFF, PHYSICIANS ABARTISTS.

THE STAFF FROM THE HOSPITAL TALKED ABOUT SOME OF THE CHALLENGES THEY WERE EXPERIENCING WITH THEIR PREGNANT TEEN POPULATION.

AND SO WHAT THEY SAID HAPPENS, THE YOUNG WOMEN PREGNANT OFTEN END UP FACING KALKS, HAVING A LOT OF STRESS IN THEIR LIVES.

AND WHAT HAPPENS FROM A MEDICAL SIDE IS THEY HAVE A HARD TIME ATTACHING EMOTIONALLY TO THEIR CHILDREN.

AND THIS ATTACHMENT PIECE BETWEEN MOTHER AND CHILD IS SO FUNDAMENTAL AND ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL FOR LONG-TERM HEALTH.

WE HEAR SO MUCH ABOUT THAT OVER THE YEARS.

I LOOK AT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHEN OUR CHILDREN WAS BREN AND WHEN MY DAUGHTER'S SON WAS BORN AND HOW WE KNOW SO MUCH MORE ABOUT THE NOTION OF PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT.

CLKT.

WE HEARD ABOUT THIS CHALLENGE AND STARTED TO WONDER, WHAT ABOUT A LULLABY WHAT ABOUT AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A MOM TO WORK WITH A AN ARTIST TO REFLECT ON THE DOOPS DREAMS HE SHE HAS FOR HER CHILD, HER RELATIONSHIP WITH HER CHILD, AND WHAT IF SHE HAD A BEAUTIFUL RECORDING OF THAT SONG AND COULD SING THAT WITH HER CHILD, HOW SHE COULD USE IT OVER TIME TO SOOTING HERSELF AS A REALLY SPECIAL GIFT TO HER BABY AND AS SOMETHING THAT REALLY CONNECTS THEM.

YOU TALK ABOUT THE EMOTIONS.

DO YOU REMEMBER HOW YOU FELT THE VERY FIRST TIME THIS COMPLETED SONG WAS PLAYED FOR YOU AND ISAIAH TOGETHER?

IT BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES.

HONESTLY I -- I KNEW IT WAS GOOD WORK AND WORKING WITH SARAH SHE WAS JUST SO HELPFUL AND SO OPEN MINDED AND STUFF.

AND EVERY IDEA SHE SHOT OUT I DWA GAVE HER SHE SHOT BACK WITH SUCH A BEAUTIFUL RESPONSE, YEAH LET'S PUT THIS.

WHO HELPED YOU WITH YOUR WRITING.

SO SHE IS JUST AMAZING.

SHE MADE ME FEEL LIKE I CAN DO IT AND I CONQUERED IT.

SHE GAVE ME THAT VIBE WHERE IF I TELL HER ANYTHING SHETS JUST GOING WITH IT AND SHE CAN MAKE IT EVEN BETTER.

SO IT WAS LIKE A BEAUTIFUL PROCESS.

ROOM.

AND THEY PLAYED LULABY AND WHEN I HEARD IT IT BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES.

I WAS SO JOYFUL.

AND ISAIAH WAS SMILING SO I KNEW HE LIKED IT.

YOU HAD THIS WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE WITH YOU AND YOUR OWN CHILD.

AND NOW IT'S PART OF AN ALBUM.

MARVELLOUS TALENT SINGING IT.

BEING SHARED BY LITERALLY THOUSANDS OF OTHER MOTHERS AND CHILDREN.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT?

I'M -- I FEEL LIKE EXCITED THAT I CAN EVEN BE JUST A PART OF THE INSPIRATION TO SOMEONE ELSE.

YOU KNOW, BECAUSE THERE IS -- LIKE ESPECIALLY FOR SINGLE MOTHERS OUT THERE, YOU KNOW, IT'S A JOYFUL EXPERIENCE AND IF YOU GET THE OPPORTUNITY YOU WON'T REGRET IT BECAUSE I DON'T.

AND NOW I'M GOING THROUGH THIS PROCESS WHERE IT'S ON A ALBUM.

AND I MEAN I KNEW IT WAS BIG.

I JUST DIDN'T FEEL LIKE IT WOULD GO THAT FAR.

NOW THAT IT CAME THIS FAR I'M SO EXCITED THIS IS SOMETHING I ACCOMPLISHED LIKE A BIG ACCOMPLISHMENT FOR ME.

AND EVERYBODY BACKS ME UP ON PROCESS IT MY HUSBAND AND MOM AND STUFF AND SO.

SARAH FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE, THE CARNEGIE HALL, YOU LOOK AT DARIUS'S STORY, ALL THE OTHER SONGS ON THE ALBUM.

DID YOU EVER ANTICIPATE IT WOULD BECOME THIS.

I DON'T THINK WE EVER KNEW THAT IT WOULD GO THIS FAR.

WHAT I WOULD SAY IS THAT PEOPLE RESPOND TO THE PROJECT.

THERE IS SOMETHING SO SIMPLE ABOUT IT AND SO FUNDAMENTAL, RIGHT?

IT'S ULTIMATELY ABOUT LOVE.

AND FOR THE REST OF YOUR CHILDREN'S LIVES THEY'LL HAVE THAT LULLABY AND PASS IT ON.
