>>> FROM A CLEPTOMANIA CRAB TO A
PRAIRIE DOG TO A SOCIOPATHIC
ALFA CHIFRP, PBS'S NATURE
PREMIERES A THREE-PARTY SERIES
TO TRAVEL THE WORLD TO EXPLORE
THE ANIMALS IN ACTION.
ARE THEY BREAKING BAD OR SIMPLY
ACTING IN WAY THAT IS ALLOW THEM
TO SURVIVE AND EVEN THRIVE?
HERE IS A LOOK.
IN NATURE PLAYS BY THE RULES
DOESN'T ALWAYS LEAD TO SUCCESS.
TO GET AHEAD, SOME ANIMALS WILL
ENGAGE IN A VARIETY OF DIRTY
TRICKS AND DASTARDLY DEEDS.
MEET THE GREATEST REBELS,
THIEVES, TROUBLE MAKERS AND
SHAPE SHIFTERS WHO STOP AT
NOTHING TO GET A MEAL.
>>> AND JOINING US NOW TO TALK
ABOUT NATURAL BORN REBELS,
NATURE MINISERIES IS NATURE
SERIES EDITOR JANET HESCH.
WELCOME BACK.
>> THANK YOU.
>> I SAID THIS IS A THREE-PART
MINISERIES.
AND THE FIRST EPISODE IS CALLED
HUNGER GAMES.
BUT IT'S REALLY MOSTLY ABOUT
THIEVING ANIMALS, ANIMALS THAT
STEAL FROM HUMAN BEINGS AND FROM
EACH OTHER.
MY FAVORITE OF ALL OF THEM IS
THE RHESUS MACAQUE.
THAT'S HOW YOU PRONOUNCE IT.
>> YES.
>> WHO SEEM TO KNOW WHICH HUMAN
BEING TO STEAL FROM.
TALK ABOUT THEM.
>> IT'S A GREAT SCENE.
YOU'RE GOING TO SEE A TON OF
AMAZING BEHAVIOR IN THIS SERIES.
>> YES.
>> BUT THE MACAQUES ARE SPECIAL
BECAUSE THEY'RE ALL ABOUT
FIGURING OUT WHAT YOU'RE DOING.
AND THEY WANT TO STEAL WHAT
YOU'VE GOT, BUT THEY DON'T WANT
TO GET CAUGHT.
SO THEY'RE VERY CONSCIOUS OF
WHETHER YOU'RE LOOKING AT THEM,
YOU'RE NOT LOOKING.
AND WHAT I LOVE IS THAT THEY'RE
TRYING TO SNEAK AND STEAL FROM
YOU AND THEY DON'T WANT YOU TO
SEE THEM EVEN LOOKING AT YOU SO
THEY GIVE THEMSELVES AWAY.
AND THERE IS A TREMENDOUS SENSE
OF HOW CONSCIOUS THEY ARE OF
YOUR CONSCIOUSNESS.
IT'S FASCINATING.
>> IT IS FASCINATING.
NOW, AN EXAMPLE OF AN ANIMAL
THAT STEALS FROM ANOTHER ANIMAL
IS THE WORLD FAMOUS PIKA.
AND ALL FAVORITE OF NATURE.
>> WE LOVE IT.
>> THE FUNNIEST RUNNING ANIMAL
EVER.
TALK ABOUT THE PIKA.
>> NEAR ADORABLE LITTLE MEMBERS
OF THE RABBIT FAMILY, LITTLE
RABBIT COUSIN.
AND ANY RELY -- THEY RELIEF HIGH
IN THE MOUNTAINS LIKE IN THE
ROCKIES, UP ABOVE TREE LINE
WHERE THERE IS NOT MUCH GROWING.
BUT THEY RELY ALL WINTER ON A
STORE OF GRASS THEY'VE BEEN
COLLECTING ALL SUMMER, LITTLE
HEY STACKS THEY MAKE THEY HAVE
TO GATHER THAT ALL SUMMER.
AND A LOT OF TIMES THEY HAVE A
VERY LONG WAYING TO DOWN TO
WHERE THE GRASS IS AND BACK UP
TO WHERE THE LITTLE HOME IN THE
ROCKS.
AND THEY START STEALING FROM
EACH OTHER.
THEY SAY OH SOMEBODY HAS GRASS
OVER THERE I'LL TAKE THAT I'LL
TAKE THAT.
>> THE SECOND EPISODE IS ABOUT
SURVIVAL IN GENERAL.
AND ONE OF MY FAVORITES HERE HAS
TO BE THE BOXER ARE CRAB.
WHAT MAKES THIS LITTLE CREATURE
SO UNIQUE.
>> I THINK IT'S MY FAVORITE
SCENE IN THE SERIES, THESE SMALL
CRABS THAT I DIDN'T KNOW
ABOUT -- AND WHEN YOU FIRST SEE
THEM YOU GO WHAT ON EARTH IS
THAT?
AND THEY HAVE THESE BIG PINK
PALM PALMS.
IT TURNS OUT THEY'RE VERY
STINGING ANEMONE THAT ARE FULL
OF TOXINS.
>> LIVE CREATURES.
>> LIVE OTHER CREATURES THAT
THEY'RE CARRYING OUT THE IN
CLAWS.
>> LIKE BOXING GLOVES.
>> LITTLE PINK PALM MANIES.
AND WHEN SOME OTHER LARGER
ANIMAL A FISH COMES UP AND
THINKS A NICE LITTLE CRAB A
SNACK BOOM.
>> BOOM.
>> THEY COME RIGHT IN AND PUNCH
THEM WITH THESE LITTLE ANEMONE
BOXING GLOVES.
AND THE FISH GETS A BIG STING.
>> OKAY.
>> AND THE TWIST IN THE STORY IS
THAT THESE ANEMONES ARE SO
IMPORTANT THAT THE CRABS START
STEALING THEM FROM EACH OTHER.
>> STEALING FROM EACH OTHER.
>> SO THE FINAL EPISODE IS
CALLED THE MATING GAME, ALL
ABOUT THE SHENANIGANS SOME ZMS
PULL IN ORDER TO GET A MATE.
THE FIRST ONE THAT STRIKES YOU
OF COURSE IS THE PEACOCK.
THE PEACOCK OF COURSE HAS LARGE,
BEAUTIFUL FEATHERS.
TAIL FEATHERS.
IS IT ALL ABOUT LOOKS FOR THE
PEACOCK?
>> THERE IS ALWAYS A TWIST IN
THE STORY IN THE TALE, SO TO
SPEAK.
>> UM-HUM.
>> AND OF COURSE PEACOCKS ARE
FAMOUS FOR BEING FLAMBOYANT.
BUT THEY'RE ALL FLAMBOYANT.
SO NOW WHAT SEPARATES THEM?
>> YEAH.
>> AND IT TURNS OUT GIRLS ARE
INTERESTED IN WHAT OTHER GIRLS
LIKE.
AND WHEN A PEACOCK HAS MATED HE
MAKES THIS FUNNY LITTLE SOUND.
IT'S A LITTLE PEEP, YOU KNOW.
>> YES.
>> BUT OTHER FEMALES NOTICE THAT
RIGHTED AWAY AND GO, HUH, THAT
IS SOMEBODY ANOTHER FEMALE
LIKED.
>> TO HIM.
>> HE MUST BE GOOD.
>> YEAH.
>> SO OUR LITTLE PEACOCK MALE
CHARACTER STARTS TO LET OUT THE
PEEP AND HE HASN'T HAD ANY MATES
AT ALL.
>> IT'S AMAZING.
A MILLION OF THE STORIES IN THE
SERIES.
WE ONLY HAD TIME TO TOUCH ON A
FEW.
IT'S TERRIFIC.
>> WE HOPE EVERYONE ENJOYS.
>> THANK YOU SO MUCH.
>> THANKS.
