TONIGHT ON METROFOCUS

Walid Abdelwahab is an immigrant who cooks and sells food from a street cart. He faces challenges every day, from long hours to local merchants who don’t want him there. But for him, it’s about chasing the American Dream. While we’re commuting to work, Heidi Kole is already at work busking in NYC subway stations. She competes with trains and cellphones for your ear, your heart — and your donations. How does she make enough to survive? Cecilia Brentlinger, a single-mother discovered that working as an on-demand driver gives her the freedom to choose her own hours, but it also comes at a price. A recent college graduate, Nadir Samara makes more money walking dogs in Brooklyn than he did working for an insurance company in Philadelphia. Daniel Rodriguez loves being a bike courier, but he relies on tips to supplement his hourly wage. Can he save enough to finish college and start his dream career?

I SAW A LOT OF WOMEN DRIVING YELLOW CARS.

WHEN I CAME HERE I WAS A WAITRESS, HOUSEKEEPER, NANNY ALL THE JOBS A WOMAN CAN DO WHEN THEY'RE IMMIGRANTS.

BUT I REALLY WANT TO GO TO SCHOOL, LEARN TO SPEAK GOOD ENGLISH, WRITE AND READ.

I'M ON MY WAY.

MY FAVORITE PART OF DOG WALKING IS DOG HUGS.

WHEN YOU OPEN THE DOOR AND THE DOG JUST JUMPS UP, LIKE, WHAT'S UP, BUDDY, HOW YOU DOING?

IT'S THE BEST FEELING IN THE WORLD.

I MAKE FILMS, I MAKE MUSIC, I DO ALL THAT KIND OF CREATIVE STUFF.

MY LEGS DON'T WORK HALF THE TIME.

MY DEFINITION OF LIFE IS DOING WHAT YOU WANT FOR THE RIGHT REASONS AND STILL SUPPORTING YOURSELF AND THE PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE THAT NEED TO BE SUPPORTED.

AS SIMPLE AS THAT.

MY NAME IS NADER AND I'M A DOG WALKER.

TODAY, WE WALKED FRESA IN THE A.M., IN THE P.M. WE WALKED CARL, HEADY, RUBY, ARCHIE AND TUCKER.

YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL.

YOU GOT A NEW COLLAR.

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I WAS TERRIBLY AFRAID OF DOGS, COULDN'T STAND THEM.

MY BEST FRIEND HAD LIKE FIVE OF THEM.

GETTING TO KNOW HIM AND BEING AT HIS HOUSE I BECAME TO GET OVER MY FEAR AND START TO LIKE DOGS AND NOW I LOVE LOVE DOGS AND THIS IS REALLY A DREAM COME TRUE.

GETTING TO BE OUTSIDE PLAYING WITH ANIMALS 5 DAYS OUT OF THE WEEK.

I MOVED TO NEW YORK IN AUGUST OF 2016.

THE REASON I MOVED HERE BECAUSE I GOT A COUPLE JOB OFFERS IN THE FILM INDUSTRY, WHAT I GOT MY DEGREE IN AND FIGURED IT WAS TIME TO MOVE.

I LIVE IN FLAT BUSH, BROOKLYN RIGHT NOW.

I HAVE TWO ROOMMATES, LIVE IN A THREE BEDROOM APARTMENT, MY RENT IS $700 PER MONTH.

WHEN I WAS WORKING IN THE CORPORATE SIDE OF AN INSURANCE COMPANY IN PHILADELPHIA I WAS MAKING LIKE $50,000 A YEAR.

MY CHECKS RANGED FROM ABOUT, I WOULD SAY THE LOW END WOULD BE $600 AND THE HIGH END WOULD BE LIKE $825, $830, I'M MAKING $400 MORE A WEEK ESSENTIALLY WALKING DOGS.

CARL IS A TRIPOD, THREE-LEGGED DOG AND 10 TIMES AS MUCH ENERGY AS HALF THE 4-LEGGED DOGS WE WORK.

WHAT ARE YOU SAYING, CARL?

HE DOESN'T HAVE TO LIFT A LEG BECAUSE THERE'S NO LEG TO LIFT.

EVERYONE KNOWS RUBY.

EVERYONE HAS SOMETHING TO SAY ABOUT RUBY.

IT'S GREAT AND ADORABLE BUT IT CAN BE A PAIN SOMETIMES.

THE BIGGEST HURDLE FOR ME IS DOG WALKER IS THE FACT THAT WE ARE IN BROOKLYN, SPECIFICALLY BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, ALMOST ENTIRELY TOURISTS.

I KNOW PEOPLE'S REACTION IS TO MAKE KISSY FACES TO DOGS, THE PROBLEM IS BY DEFINITION YOU ARE DISTRACTING HIM.

IF I HAVE FIVE DOGS IN MY HAND AND TWO ARE FROM YOU AND THEY'RE PULLING WAY FROM THE PACK --

THEY ARE SUPER NICE.

THE REMAINDER OF THE HURDLE IS TRASH AND STUFF, WE WALK A DOG LIKE KATIE WHO ALMOST PULLED MY ARM OUT OF MY SOCKET, RUNNING AFTER A SQUIRREL AND YANK YANK, DIDN'T FEEL GOOD.

PAWS N REC IS A FAMILY OWNED BUSINESS, THREE BROTHERS AND A FAMILY INVOLVED AND A TIGHT-KNIT COMMUNITY I ENJOY BEING PART OF.

IT'S A LITTLE WEIRD BECAUSE WE'RE INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS, I'M NOT GOING TO GET A TAX RETURN.

WE GET 1099s INSTEAD OF W-2s.

MY SALARY RIGHT NOW IS COVERING ALL MY EXPENSES.

I AM SAVING.

A LOT OF MY FRIENDS JOKE AROUND, MAN IF YOU MEET A GIRL OUT, AND THEY ASK YOU WHAT YOU DO, DO YOU SAY YOU'RE A FREELANCE FILMMAKER OR ANYTHING?

NO.

I ENJOY WHAT I DO.

TODAY, THE STRUGGLE WAS ONE, CARL AND TUCKER WERE NEXT TO EACH OTHER.

I WISH I HAD GOTTEN TUCKER FIRST INSTEAD OF CARL LOGISTICALLY.

CARL, WHAT DID YOU EAT TODAY?

GOOD LORD.

TEDDY OVER THERE EAT THROUGH HIS LEASH FOR THE THIRD TIME.

HE LIKES TO EAT HIS LEASHES LIKE YOU AND ME.

I AM EXTREMELY PROUD TO BE A DOG WALKER NOT BECAUSE OF THE KIND OF JOB IT IS OR IS NOT, BECAUSE OF THE WAY I WAS RAISED AND THE WAY I BELIEVE THE WORLD WORKS.

IF YOU ARE PAYING YOUR BILLS, YOU COULD BE ANYTHING.

ME AS A PERSON, I LIKE TO BE ACTIVE.

I HATE BEING, YOU KNOW, BEING IN ONE PLACE, AND I MOVE AROUND.

A CAREER IS BASICALLY THE THIRD PARTY DELIVERY SERVICE SO BASICALLY YOU ORDER FOOD AND WE DELIVER THE FOOD AS FAST AS WE CAN.

MY NAME IS DONNIE RODRIGUEZ AND I'M A COURIER.

I'VE BEEN A COURIER 10 MONTHS ALREADY.

IT'S BEEN A BLESSING AND GREAT.

I'VE BEEN DOING A GOOD JOB ON IT.

I LIKE IT.

SO IN THIS POSITION I AM RIGHT NOW I'M ACTUALLY A CHEF COACH SO I USUALLY GET PAID $11 AN HOUR, WHICH IS GOOD.

A CHEF COACH BASICALLY MOTIVATES THE RIDER.

CHIEF COACH.

THE BAD THING ABOUT IT, THERE IS A LOT OF PEOPLE.

YOU CAN GET HURT.

I DO GET SCARED WHEN YOU GO OUT THERE WITH A POSITIVE ENERGY AND WAKE UP GOOD, GOOD MORNING, THIS IS WHAT I'M GOING TO DO AND I'M GOING TO WORK HARD FOR IT, YOU KNOW, YOU WILL HAVE SOME YOU GET PAID EVERY WEEK.

THE GOOD THING ABOUT THIS COMPANY IS YOU GET PAID BY THE HOUR AND BY TIPS.

LET'S SAY I WORK 4 DAYS A WEEK AND THOSE 4 DAYS A WEEK, I GET PAID, MAKE $200 IN TIPS, MY CHECK WILL COME UP TO LIKE 4 -- AFTER TAXES, 4 AND CHANGE OR 3 AND CHANGE.

THE GOOD THING ABOUT IT IF YOU DON'T MAKE NO TIPS DURING THAT WEEK, SAY IT'S PRETTY SLOW THE COMPANY WILL GIVE YOU LIKE A GAP PAY.

EVERYDAY IS DIFFERENT.

YOU KNOW, TODAY I MADE $89 TODAY IN TIPS.

TOMORROW, I COULD DO $50, $100.

I AM A SOPHOMORE AT COLLEGE.

MY MAJOR THAT I'M GOING FOR IS CRIMINAL JUSTICE.

THAT'S WHAT I'M GOING FOR, TO BECOME A POLICE OFFICER.

THIS IS ACTUALLY MY POLICE DEPARTMENT UNIFORM I HAVE.

I JOINED THIS PROGRAM CALLED A -- POLICE OFFICER FOR THE POLICE DEPARTMENT.

IT'S BEEN A BLESSING.

I FEEL I'VE BEEN ON THE RIGHT PATH.

I AM WAITING FOR THEM TO CALL ME.

I LIVE RIGHT NEXT TO THE YANK STADIUM 461.

I LIVE WITH MY FAMILY, MY MOM, MY LITTLE BROTHER AND MY TWIN SISTER.

HOME-WISE, NOW THE RENT IS RIDICULOUSLY HIGH.

THANK GOD SHE'S BEEN LIVING HERE 21 YEARS AND ONLY PAYS $800.

NEW YORK CITY ITSELF IS EXPENSIVE.

GIVE MY MOM HALF OF MY CHECKS, I GET PAID $400, I GIVE HER $200, WHATEVER I'M ABLE TO GIVE I WILL GIVE TO HER, BECAUSE IT'S MY MOM AND I FEEL LIKE SHE'S BEEN THERE FOR ME MY WHOLE LIFE.

SHE WOULD TAKE FOOD STAMPS, TAKE A LOT OF THINGS TO PROVIDE TO US EVEN IF SHE HAD $2, SHE WOULD GIVE IT TO US.

THIS IS A CAREER, A JOB I WANT TO KEEP UNTIL I BECOME A POLICE OFFICER.

WITH THE FUTURE I CAN HELP MY MOM AND GIVE HER THAT DREAM CAR SHE ALWAYS WANTED.

I'M GOING TO GIVE TO IT HER.
