IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE?

THE ANSWER YES.

> AND BEETLES FEST 2018 HITS NEW YORK CITY THIS WEEKEND.

ALL THAT AND MORE AS 'METROFOCUS' STARTS RIGHT NOW.

> THIS IS 'METROFOCUS,' WITH RAFAEL P. RAMON, JACK FORD AND JENNA FLANNIGAN, FUNDING FOR THIS PROGRAM WAS PROVIDED BY --

CORPORATE FUNDING FOR METRO FOCUS WAS PROVIDED BY MUTUAL OF AMERICA, YOUR RETIREMENT COMPANY, AND BY PSE&G, SERVING CUSTOMERS, STRENGTHENING THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY AND INVESTING IN THE FUTURE.

> THE TRIAL OF OSCAR MORALE, THE MAN ACCUSED OF MURDERING A QUEENS NEW MOM IN 2013, THE 37-YEAR-OLD IS ACCUSED OF GUNNING DOWN A MAN AND HIS FRIEND AS THEY WALKED HOME FROM AFTERNOON PRAYERS IN QUEENS IN AUGUST 2016.

THE KILLINGS SHOCKED NEW YORK'S MUSLIM COMMUNITY AND ALTHOUGH IT CALLED FOR MORALE TO BE CHARGED WITH A HATE CRIME, THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY SAID THE MOTIVE FOR THE MURDERS WAS UNCLEAR.

ACCORDING TO A 2016 FBI REPORT, THERE WAS AN ACCELERATION IN ACTS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY THAN THE PREVIOUS YEAR.

WELCOME BACK TO THE PROGRAM.

THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME.

AS I SAID IN THE INTRODUCTION, THE FBI REPORT SAID THERE WAS A 67% RISE IN HATE CRIMES AGAINST THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY AGAINST 2015.

HAVE THINGS GOTTEN BETTER SINCE THEN FOR THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY?

THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION, AND UNFORTUNATELY, NO, ISLAMOPHOBIA HAS INCREASED BY 67%. THIS IS BY THE COUNCIL ON ISLAMIC-AMERICAN AFFAIRS.

OBVIOUSLY THERE'S A SURGE IN HATE CRIMES AGAINST THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY.

THERE'S ALSO A SURGE IN HATE CRIMES AGAINST THE JUDICIAL, ANTI-SEMITISM IS HIGH, TO WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE THIS INCREASE IN VIOLENCE AGAINST THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY AND THE JEWISH COMMUNITY.

FOLKS HERE IN THE U.S. STILL DON'T KNOW THEIR MUSLIM AND JEWISH NEIGHBORS.

AS WE LOOK AT THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY IN PARTICULAR, MOST PEOPLE DON'T PERSONALLY KNOW A MUSLIM PERSON.

A LOT OF ANIMOSITY AND HATRED IS BUBBLING DOWN AT THE SURFACE.

AND WHAT HAPPENS WITH THE EMBOLDENED HATE THAT WE'RE HEARING, A LOT OF THE PROBLEMATIC RHETORIC WE'RE HEARING, THAT JUST ADDS FUEL TO THE FIRE.

AND SOME FOLKS ARE EVEN SAYING THAT ISLAMOPHOBIA IS --

AND CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, THERE'S PROBABLY WAY MORE UNREPORTED CASES.

WAY MORE.

AND THESE NUMBERS TEND TO BE UNREPORTED FOR VARIOUS REASONS.

SOME ARE SCARED, THEY DON'T HAVE LEGAL STATUS, AND IT'S VERY HARD TO PROSECUTE, AS WE SEE IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE, ANYTHING AS A HATE CRIME.

SO ALTHOUGH THE FAMILY AND THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY WANTS TO SEE A HATE CRIME CHARGE, IT'S A SIMILAR PATTERN THAT WE HAVE SEEN IN THE PAST.

TALKING ABOUT IN THE CASE OF OSCAR MORRELL, WHAT IS YOUR EVIDENCE THAT IT WAS A HATE CRIME?

I'M ONLY SPEAKING ON BEHALF OF THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY, THEY ARE MOURNING, THEY LOST A BELOVED MEMBER OF THEIR COMMUNITY.

AND THE FACT THAT THIS HAPPENED IN BROAD DAYLIGHT, IT WAS JUST AN AVERAGE DAY, COMING BACK FROM ONE OF THE MANY PRAYER CEREMONIES THAT HAPPEN IN A MOSQUE, AND HE WAS SHOT POINT BLANK EXECUTION STYLE.

SO GO WE KNOW MORE ABOUT THE MOTIVE THAN WE DID IN 2016 ABOUT THE MAN THAT DID THIS?

UNFORTUNATELY NOT.

THERE HAVE BEEN TALKS ABOUT THE MURDER WEAPON, BUT THE DEFENDANT HAS PLEADED NOT GUILTY AND SAID IT WASN'T HIS, SO THERE'S A LOT OF CONFUSION OUT THERE.

ASIDE FROM THE MORRELL CASE, CAN YOU GIVE US SOME OF THE MORE EGREGIOUS EXAMPLES IN THE TRI-STATE AREA AGAINST THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY?

HATE CRIMES IN THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY HAS MANY VIEWS AND PATTERNS, THERE ARE ATTACKS AGAINST THEIR MOSQUES, ATTACKS AGAINST MUSLIM WOMEN ARE VERY OBVIOUS TARGETS.

MOST OF THE HATE CRIMES ARE OFTEN BECAUSE OF A WOMAN'S HIBJAB GETS PULLED OFF.

THERE ARE MANY LAYERS.

YOU SAID YOU HAD BECOME HYPER AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS BECAUSE OF THIS INCREASE IN HATE CRIMES.

HOW IS YOUR SITUATION NOW?

I THINK I'M IN A UNIQUE POSITION, FIRST OF ALL BECAUSE I'M A REPORTER AND I'M EXPECTED TO REPORT ON THESE TYPES OF THINGS.

BUT WHEN I'M NOT THERE, I'M VULNERABLE TO THOSE KINDS OF HATE ATTACKS AND SLURS.

BUT IT GIVES ME A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE AS A REPORTER, TO TAP INTO MY COMMUNITY TO GET THEM TO TRUST ME, AND THEN I CAN TAP INTO NOT MY EXPERIENCES, BUT THEIR EXPERIENCES THAT ARE VERY SIMILAR TO MINE.

YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCES, THESE EVENTS, HAVE THEY INCREASED OVER THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS?

THEY HAVE INCREASED, I HAVE HEARD A COUPLE MORE RACIAL SLURS THAT I MIGHT HAVE HAD A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO.

SO I THINK THAT'S THE UNFORTUNATE REALITY THAT MANY MUSLIM WOMEN ARE LIVING.

ARE THINGS GOING TO GET WORSE BEFORE THEY GET BETTER OR WHAT?

WE'RE HOPING THAT THINGS ARE GOING TO GET BETTER, WE HAVE SEEN A LOT OF SOLIDARITY, WE SAW WHEN THE MUSLIM MEN CAME OUT ACROSS THE COUNTRY, STANDING WITH THEIR MUSLIM NEIGHBORS, STANDING ININ A LOT OF THAT FOCUS, THAT PASSION, IF WE SEE MORE OF THAT, I THINK WE'LL SLOWLY START MAKING IMPROVEMENTS.

THANK YOU FOR JOINING US ONCE AGAIN.

THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME.

> HURRICANE MARIA MADE LANDFALL IN PUERTO RICO ON SEPTEMBER 20, 2017 WITH WIND GUSTS UP TO 113 MILES AN HOUR, AN INTENSITY THAT LEVELED HOMES, SCHOOLS AND HOSPITALS.

FIVE MONTHS HAVE PASSED AND THE DUST HAS BARELY SETTLED.

THE ISLAND CONTINUES TO STRUGGLE WITH IT'S RECOVERY.

NATIVES HAVE CHOSEN TO FLEE TO THE MAINLAND INSTEAD OF REBUILDING.

NOW NEW YORK'S OLDEST AND LARGEST WILD WELFARE AGENCY IS FOCUSING IT'S ATTENTION ON FAMILIES WHO HAVEN'T LEFT, FOCUSSING ON PEOPLE WHO ARE HELPING TO REBUILD THEIR HOMELAND.

CARMEN RIVERA, IT'S SO NICE TO HAVE YOU HERE WITH US.

THANK YOU, IT'S NICE TO BE HERE.

EXPLAIN TO SOME OF OUR VIEWERS ABOUT THE FAMILY, WHAT DOES IT DO?

IT WAS FOUNDED IN 1869 AND TODAY IT'S ONE OF THE LARGEST CHILD WELFARE AGENCIES IN THE BUSINESS.

AND REALLY, TRULY A COMMUNITY BASED ORGANIZATION THAT CONTINUES TO RESPONDS TO THE NEEDS OF THIS DAY.

WHAT HAVE YOU FOUND THAT'S BEEN SO TROUBLING ABOUT THE STATE OF EDUCATION NOW FOLLOWING THE HURRICANE?

WHAT HAS BEEN SO TROUBLING IS THAT BECAUSE OF OUR -- BECAUSE OF THE WAY WE HAVE BEEN IMPACTED, IT'S REALLY BEEN A VERY HARSH AND LONG RECOVERY PROCESS FOR US.

MANY OF OUR -- FIRST OF ALL, OUR WORKFORCE WAS SEVERELY IMPACTED BY THE HURRICANE.

WE HAVE OVER 440 EMPLOYEES IN PUERTO RICO AND MANY OF OUR EMPLOYEES LOST THEIR HOMES, THEIR HOMES WERE FLOODED, TO WE'RE TALKING ABOUT, YOU KNOW, A REALLY SERIOUS IMPACT ON THE WORKFORCE.

FAMILIES WERE DEVASTATED.

WE HAD MANY FAMILIES THAT AFTER THIS STORM WERE IN SHELTERS.

RIGHT NOW WE HAVE LOST, AS OF THIS DATE WE HAVE LOST 239 CHILDREN BECAUSE THEIR FAMILIES HAVE DECIDED TO MOVE TO ONE OF THE STATES, PRIMARILY TO SECURE MEDICAL SERVICES, TO SECURE HOUSING, MANY ARE DOUBLED UP WITH FAMILY MEMBERS.

BUT THEY HAVE MADE A CONSCIOUS DECISION TO LEAVE THE ISLAND WHICH IS DEVASTATING.

SO HERE WE ARE, OF THE 43 CENTERS THAT WE HAVE, 21 ARE CURRENTLY OPERATIONAL, OFFERING FULL DAY SERVICES, BUT WE STILL HAVE A REMAINING 22 THAT ARE VERY MUCH IN RENOVATION PHASES.

BECAUSE AFTER THE STORM, THEY WERE EITHER CONTAMINATED BY MOLD.

WE HAD ONE CENTER, OUR FIRST CENTER, WHICH WAS OPENED IN 1983 WITH OUR FIRST CONTRACT, IS COMPLETELY UNINHABITABLE.

IT'S NOT STRUCTURALLY SOUND, THE ROOF IS GONE, WALLS ARE NOT SOUND, WE CAN NEVER PROVIDE SERVICES IN THAT PARTICULAR CENTER.

SO WE'RE TALKING ABOUT CHILDREN NOT BEING ABLE TO ATTEND, YOU KNOW, HEAD START CENTERS.

OUR STAFF WAS INCREDIBLE.

THREE DAYS AFTER THE STORM, IN THE NUMEROUS MUNICIPALITIES THAT WE SERVE, THEY WERE OUT THERE ASSESSING DAMAGES.

THEY HAVE HELPING RESIDENTS TO CLEAN, WE WERE ABLE TO SECURE CONTRACTORS TO COME IN AND COMPLETE THE CLEANING PROCESS, BUT WE'RE STILL TALKING ABOUT A LOT MORE RENOVATIONS THAT NEED TO OCCUR BEFORE WE OPEN SOME OF OUR CENTERS.

SOME OF OUR FAMILIES ARE STILL LIVING IN HOME WITH TARPS OVER THEIR ROOFS, WAITING TO SECURE FUNDS, WITH OUR FAMILIES, WITH OUR STAFF, WE WERE ABLE TO PROVIDE INITIALLY --

LET ME ASK YOU THIS, TELL ME ABOUT SOME OF THE SERVICES THAT YOU HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PROVIDE.

SO FOR OUR STAFF, WHICH IS APPROXIMATELY 440, WE WERE ABLE TO PROVIDE SOME FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE.

ANYWHERE FROM A SIMPLE, YOU KNOW, ALLOWANCE OF $300 TO MUCH MORE THAN THAT BASED UPON NEED, WE WERE ABLE TO ASSESS NEED.

WE ARE NOW OFFERING INTEREST FREE LOANS, WHICH MANY FAMILIES NEED TO BE ABLE TO RECOVER, TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE TO THEIR HOMES.

WE STILL HAVE OVER 100 STAFF THAT DO NOT, TO THIS DAY, DO NOT HAVE POWER IN THEIR HOMES.

YET THEY'RE COMING TO WORK.

THEY ARE -- OUR STAFF ARE INCREDIBLY COMMITTED TO THIS MISSION AND WANT TO GET OUT THERE AND PROVIDE SERVICES TO THE FAMILIES.

AS I SAID, WE'RE ABLE TO -- WE'RE CURRENTLY SERVING 835 CHILDREN AS OF MONDAY'S COUNT, FULL DAY HEAD START SERVICES.

BUT WE HAVE AN ADDITIONAL 396 THAT WE ARE PROVIDED HOME BASED SERVICES BECAUSE THE CENTERS ARE NOT READY, AND WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO PROVIDE THE CHILDREN WITH THE EARLY CHILDHOOD INTERVENTIONS THAT THEY SO NEED AND FAMILIES APPRECIATE THAT.

THAT'S AN ASTONISHING LEVEL OF DEDICATION BY YOUR STAFF THAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT HERE.

LAST QUESTION FOR YOU.

IF SOMEONE'S WATCHING OUR CONVERSATION RIGHT NOW AND THEY'RE SAYING, YOU KNOW WHAT?

THAT'S SUCH IMPORTANT WORK THAT THEY'RE DOING, I WONDER HOW I COULD HELP.

WHAT WOULD YOUR ANSWER BE?

HOW CAN OTHER FOLKS HELP THE WORK THAT YOU AND OTHERS ARE DOING?

ACTUALLY WE HAVE AN AMAZON WISH LIST.

OUR FAMILIES THAT WE SERVE REALLY ARE IN NEED OF TANGIBLE ITEMS.

WE'RE TALKING BED SHEETS, TOWELS, HYGIENIC SUPPLIES, CLOTHES, BECAUSE THEY HAVE LOST MANY OF THEIR WHAT YOU AND I WOULD CONSIDER SIMPLE POSSESSIONS AS A RESULT OF THE FLOODING.

WE APPRECIATE ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING THAT COULD BE DONATED.

WE WILL MAKE SURE THAT IT GETS TO THOSE FAMILIES IN THOSE AT-RISK COMMUNITIES THAT COULD REALLY BENEFIT FROM THESE DONATIONS.

IT'S MARVELOUS WORK THAT YOU AND THE FAMILY AND ALL YOUR DEDICATED STAFF MEMBERS AND VOLUNTEERS HAVE BEEN GOING.

I WANT TO WISH YOU GOOD LUCK AS YOU CONTINUE AND THANK YOU FOR SPENDING SOME TIME WITH US AND WE'LL GET YOU BACK AND YOU CAN GIVE US AN UPDATE AS WE GO TOWN THE ROAD.

THANK YOU.

SO IF WE ARE TO LEARN HOW TO LIVE SUSTAINABLY IN ORDER TO -- MANY PLACES ARE ALREADY INVESTING IN THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF THE FUTURE, INCLUDING ARE YOU YOU -- RENEWABLE ENERGY AND MODERN MASS TRANSIT.

THE PROFESSOR AT COLUMBIA'S EARTH INSTITUTE, HE PROVIDES A BROAD OVERVIEW OF THE SYSTEMS OF THE 21st CENTURY.

AND POINTS TO WAYS BY WHICH EVEN MORE PROGRESS CAN BE MADE.

PROFESSOR COHEN JOINS US NOW.

THANK YOU FOR JOINING US ON 'METROFOCUS.'

THANKS FOR HAVING ME.

FIRST OF ALL, PROFESSOR, WHAT IS A SUSTAINABLE CITY, HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE IT OR DEFINE IT.

I FOCUS ON PHYSICAL ISSUES.

SO IT'S A CITY THAT USES AS MUCH RENEWABLE ENERGY AS POSSIBLE, IS ENERGY EFFICIENT, REUSES MATERIAL, RECYCLES AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, REUSES AS MUCH WASTE AS POSSIBLE, HANDLESS ITS WASTE EFFECTIVELY AND HAS THE LEAST IMPACT ON THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT.

PROFESSOR, AS YOU KNOW, THERE ARE MANY AMERICANS WHO ASSOCIATE SUSTAINABILITY WITH A NEED TO SACRIFICE THE COMFORTS AND THE EFFICIENCY THAT THEY'RE USED TO, ARE THOSE AMERICANS RIGHT IN THINKING THAT SUSTAINABILITY MEANS SACRIFICING THE COMFORTS WE HAVE BECOME USED TO?

I THINK IT'S JUST THE OPPOSITE.

AND ALSO THAT'S A LOSING STRATEGY.

ENVIRONMENTALISTS ARE SAYING THE WAY YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH THIS IS TO SIT ALONE IN THE DARK WITH A CANDLE.

NOBODY WANTS TO DO THAT.

NOBODY WANTS TO GIVE UP THEIR COMFORTS.

THAT'S PART OF THE QUESTION, HOW DO WE DELIVER THOSE COMFORTS WITH THE LEAST POSSIBLE AFFECT ON THE ENVIRONMENT.

PEOPLE WANT SUVS, LET'S MAKE THEM EFFICIENT SUVS THAT ARE BASED ON RENEWABLE ENERGY.

I THINK IN GENERAL, WHAT YOU NEED TO DO IS HAVE PEOPLE LIVE THE KIND OF LIFESTYLE THEY WANT BUT WITH LESS CONSUMPTION.

WHAT ROLE DOES POLITICS PLAY IN BUILDING SUSTAINABLE CITIES?

WE HAVE BEEN AN ANTI-GOVERNMENT ERA SINCE RONALD REAGAN'S PRESIDENCY IN THE '80s.

YOU NEED MONEY FOR MASS TRANSIT.

LOOK WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THIS CITY TO MASS TRANSIT SYSTEMS.

YOU NEED TO MODERNIZE THE ELECTRIC GRID.

BETTER SEWAGE SYSTEMS, NEW YORK CITY IS FAR CLEANER TODAY THAN IT WAS IN 1960s AND '70s, WE USED TO BURN GARBAGE IN APARTMENT INCINERATORS, WE USED TO DUMP GARBAGE INTO THE WATER WAYS.

IF NEW YORK CITY OR ANY OTHER CITY HAS THE WILL TO BECOME SUSTAINABLE, CAN THEY DO IT WITHOUT THE SUPPORT WITH THE STATE GOVERNMENT OR THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT?

IT WOULD BE BETTER IF WE HAD A FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

NEW YORK BUILT THE EERIE CANAL WITHOUT FEDERAL MONEY, WE BUILT OUR WATER SYSTEM ON OUR OWN.

THE ELECTRICAL GRID WAS PRIVATELY-FUNDED.

THE MASS TRANSIT SYSTEM ORIGINALLY WAS PRIVATE.

WE CAN DO IT.

WE HAVE THE RESOURCES, PEOPLE JUST HAVE TO DECIDE THAT THEY'RE WILLING TO INVEST IN THE FUTURE.

WHAT'S AT STAKE?

WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES IF WE DON'T DEVELOP THE WILL TO CREATE OR TO FURTHER DEVELOP SUSTAINABILITY?

I THINK THAT THE CONSEQUENCES ARE EVENTUALLY PAYING THE PRICE OF A POISONED PLANET.

I MEAN I WAS IN THE EPA, THE SUPERFUND PROJECT IN 1980, AND SINCE THAT TIME WE HAVE SPENT HALF A TRILLION DOLLARS CLEANING UP THE TOXIC WASTE WE DUMPED FROM THE 1920s TO THE 1980s, IT'S PAY ME NOW OR PAY ME LATER.

FOR EVERY DOLLAR YOU SPEND CLEANING UP THE AIR, YOU GET $15 BACK IN BENEFITS.

SO THERE IS A GREAT DEAL AT STAKE.

BUT I'M OPTIMISTIC WE'RE GOING TO GET THERE.

WHY?

PART OF IT IS YOUNG PEOPLE.

AND WE'RE SEEING THE BEGINNING OF THE SHARING ECONOMY.

WHEN I WAS YOUNG, YOU WANTED TO OWN A CAR SO YOU SHOULD SHOW IT OFF TO YOUR FRIENDS.

NOW MILLENNIAL'S JUST WANT TO EXPERIENCE THE CAR.

NOW THEY'RE FEELING THAT WAY ABOUT CLOTHING, PEOPLE RENT THEIR PARTY CLOTHES AND DON'T KEEP THEM IN THEIR CLOSET.

THERE'S A LOT OF THIS ACTIVITY GOING ON, THE IDEA THAT POSSESSION IS DIFFERENT FROM CONSUMPTION, YOU CAN USE IT AND YOU CAN PASS IT ALONG.

BUT I WANT TO START THIS CONVERSATION WITH WHERE YOU WERE.

YOU WERE LIVING IN ILLINOIS AT THE TIME?

YES.

WHY ILLINOIS AND WHAT WERE YOU DOING TO TRY TO GET THE BEETLES OVER HERE TO THE U.S.?

WELL, I HAD MOVED TO THIS COUNTRY IN MARCH OF 1963.

I WAS MARRIED TO A VERY, VERY BRILLIANT ENGINEER AND HE WAS IN GREAT DEMAND IN MANY, MANY DIFFERENT COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD.

AND THAT HAPPENED TO BE IN ILLINOIS, WITH THE COAL MINING COMPANIES IN '63.

WELL, MOST OF MY LIFE I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A BIT OF AN EXTROVERT.

IN FACT I WAS A LITTLE KID, PEOPLE USED TO SAY, OH, SHE'S SO MUCH LIKE SHIRLEY TEMPLE, SHE SHOULD BE IN THE MOVIES.

I WAS ALWAYS SORT OF INTERESTED IN AND ENJOYED SHOWBIZ.

SO WHEN MY KID BROTHER WAS IN A BAND, AND I HAD MOVED TO THIS COUNTRY, MY MUM STARTED SENDING ME THEIR SINGLES, SO MY FIRST INSTINCT WAS, OKAY, WELL, LET'S GET THEM ON THE RADIO HERE AS WELL.

SO I STARTED GOING AROUND THE ARE STATIONS WITH THE SINGLES, BUT I WAS MET WITH GREAT DISDAIN.

BECAUSE BACK IN THOSE DAYS, WOMEN WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO MESS AROUND WITH THIS.

I SHOULD HAVE BEEN HOME.

HERE'S A NEW BAND FROM BRITAIN AND HERE'S A WOMAN TRYING TO PUSH THEM?

AND THEY'RE LOOKING AT ME, LIKE YOU SHOULD BE HOME IRONING YOUR HUSBAND'S SHIRTS.

WHAT'S THIS GOT TO DO WITH YOU?

SO I STARTED WRITING TO THEIR MANAGER BRIAN EPSTEIN, I SAID YOU HAVE GOT TO GET WITH A RECORD COMPANY THAT HAS A LITTLE CLOUT, OTHER THAN SOME HOUSEWIFE WALKING IN THERE SAYING THIS IS GOOD STUFF.

SO HE WROTE BACK A FEW OF THE LETTERS THAT HE WROTE BACK TO ME I HAVE ACTUALLY STILL GOT, AND HE SAID I'M ALSO GOING TO TAKE THE LIBERTY OF SENDING YOU SOME OF MY OTHER ARTISTS AND SEE WHAT YOU CAN GO.

I WANT TO ASK YOU BEFORE WE LOSE YOU HERE, WE TALKED BE LT THE TRIBUTE BAND THAT YOU'VE GOTTEN STARTED, THE LIVERPOOL LEGEND, NOT ONLY DOES IT PROVIDE GREAT MUSIC, THAT EVERY BEETLES FANS WOULD LOVE.

THERE'S SOMETHING BEHIND THE HELP KEEP MUSIC ALIVE PROGRAM.

SO THE BAND IS CONTRIBUTING MONEY, FUNDS TO HELP THAT?

NO, WE DON'T ACTUALLY CONTRIBUTE MONEY BUT WE DON'T GOT MONEY.

YOU HELPED TO RAISE MONEY.

YES, WHAT WE DO IS WE HAVE A PROGRAM WHERE WE GET IN TOUCH WITH MUSIC DIRECTORS FROM HIGH SCHOOLS ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND IN FACT, YOU KNOW, IN A SITUATION LIKE THIS, I WANT TO PUT OUT THE WORD TO ANY MUSIC DIRECTORS FROM ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY WHO HAVE A HIGH SCHOOL WHO HAVE TALENTED KIDS WHO HAVE THE TIME TO LEARN MUSIC BUT DON'T HAVE ANY FUNDING TO DO IT.

WE WANT THEM TO GET IN TOUCH WITH US.

WE SEND THE CHARTS OF THE BEETLES MUSIC TO THE SCHOOLS, AND GIVE THEM THREE OR FOUR MONTHS TO WORK WITH THE SCHOOLS FOR THEM TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY.

AND WE MAKE A DATE WHERE WE'RE GOING TO COME AND PERFORM AT THE SCHOOL AND I DO A LOT OF PUBLICITY, GO OUT TO THE SURROUNDING COUNTRY SIDE AND SAY WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING THIS WONDERFUL CONCERT RAISING MONEY FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL, AND MAKE SURE THE PARENTS AND GRAND PARENTS ATTEND.

AND WE USUALLY HAVE A FULL HALL, AND SOMETIMES WE HAVE AS MANY AS 250 STUDENTS ON STAGE BEHIND US WHEN WE'RE DOING THE SHOW.
