> I'M CONSTANTLY CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT OUR CHILDREN ARE SEEING.

AND FOR I15 YEARS I HAVE TRIED N THIS COUNTRY AND CANADA TO PRESENT WHAT I FEEL IS A MEANINGFUL EXPRESSION OF CARE.

DO YOU NARRATE?

I'M THE HOST, YES, AND I DO ALL THE PUPPETS AND I WRITE ALL THE MUSIC AND THE SCRIPTS.

I'M SUPPOSED TO BE A PRETTY TOUGH GUY, AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I'VE HAD GOOSE BUMPS FOR THE PAST TWO DAYS.

I THINK IT'S WONDERFUL.

LOOKS LIKE YOU JUST EARNED THE $20 MILLION.

A MONUMENTAL MOMENT IN PUBLIC BROADCASTING.

THE IT'S BEEN 50 YEARS SINCE FRED ROGERS FIRST APPEARED ON OUR TV SCREENS AS OUR NEIGHBOR, MR. ROGERS.

A GENTLE AND MODEST MAN WHO WARBLED, WON'T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR.

HE INSPIRED KIDS AND ADULTS ACROSS AMERICA TO BE MORE THOUGHTFUL AND KIND IN HIS TELEVISION SHOW, TOUCHING ON PIVOTAL TOPICS LIKE GOING TO SCHOOL, MAKING FRIENDS AND DEALING WITH SIBLINGS, ALL THE WAY TO DIFFICULT TOPICS LIKE DIVORCE, DISABILITIES AND BULLYING.

NOW IN A NEW SHOW, PBS WILL BE GIVING A HEARTFELT THANK YOU AND TRIBUTE TO THE BELOVED ICON.

THE HERE'S JUST ONE OF MANY.

THE FIRST THING I REMEMBER LEARNING FROM MR. ROGERS IF I CAN ONLY BE BRAVE ENOUGH TO TALK ABOUT IT, THEN IT'S GOING TO BE OKAY.

I'M DELIGHTED TO BE JOINED BY THE EXECUTIVE PRODUCER OF THE SPECIAL, ELLEN DOUGHERTY.

WELCOME TO THE PROGRAM.

THE.

THANK YOU.

TELL ME ABOUT THIS PROGRAM.

WHAT IS IT THAT MADE MR. ROGERS SO SPECIAL?

OH, GOSH.

SO MANY THINGS.

PEOPLE REALLY CONNECTED WITH MR.

ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD BECAUSE OF THE GREAT CARE THAT FRED TOOK IN MAKING THE SHOW.

EVERY DECISION WAS CAREFULLY TAKEN AS TO HOW BEST TO DEAL WITH CHILDREN, HOW BEST TO REFLECT THE NEED THE AND WORRIES AND WANTS AND NEEDS OF KIDS.

WHEN IT COMES TO THE SHOW THAT SO MANY OF US REMEMBER, WE MIGHT NOT REMEMBER IT AS BEING REVOLUTIONARY, BUT THERE WERE SOME THINGS THAT HAPPENED ON 'MR. ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD' THAT WERE JUST THAT.

ABSOLUTELY.

FOR ONE THING, YOU HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THE MEDIA LANDSCAPE AT THE TIME.

IN THE '60S, THERE WASN'T CHILDREN'S TELEVISION AS WE KNOW IT.

IT STARTED WITH MR. ROGERS AND THEN THE NEXT YEAR 'SESAME STREET.'

JUST DOING A PROGRAM THAT WAS SO THOUGHTFUL AND PACED IN SUCH A WAY THAT COULD REALLY CONNECT WITH THE HOME VIEWER.

I THINK THAT'S WHAT A LOT OF PEOPLE REALLY RELATED TO, WAS THAT ONE ON ONE CONNECTION WITH FRED.

OF COURSE THE SPECIAL IS GOING TO BE VERY STAR-STUDDED.

I WONDER IF YOU COULD TELL US ABOUT SOME OF THE CELEBRITIES.

SOME OF THE PEOPLE YOU WILL SEE ON IT'S YOU I LIKE WILL INCLUDE PEOPLE ON THE SHOW, LIKE YO YO MA.

AND THEN WE ALSO LOOKED AT PEOPLE WHO WERE INSPIRED BY THE SHOW, SOME WERE VIEWERS THEMSELVES AS KIDS, LIKE SARAH SILVERMAN, JUDD APATOW.

IF THERE WAS SOMETHING YOU WANTED PEOPLE TO TAKE AWAY FROM THE DOCUMENTARY, WHAT WOULD IT SNB.

HOPEFUL TLY IT WILL CONNECT THEM WITH THEIR OWN KIDS AND GRANDKIDS AND I GUESS THE MESSAGE FROM 'MR. ROGERS' NEIGHBORHOOD', AND THE WAY THEY FELT WHEN THEY WATCHED IT THE FIRST TIME THROUGH AND MAYBE TO CEENU SEE NEW THINGS WITH ADULT EYES FROM THIS LITTLE BIT OF DISTANCE.

AND NOW REFLECTING, HOW THE SHOW WAS PUT TOGETHER AND THE THINGS FRED DID.

THE REALLY INTERESTING WAYS THAT HE TOOK BIG IDEAS, LIKE FEELINGS AND PUT THEM INTO REALLY THOUGHTFUL, SIMPLE PHRASES LIKE WHAT TO YOU DO WITH THE MAD THAT YOU FEEL?

SO PROFOUND.

SOMETHING THAT ANY ADULT CAN HANDLE.

AS WELL AS A 3-YEAR-OLD OR 4-YEAR-OLD.

OR IN A NEW YORK CITY SHRINK'S OFFICE.

'MR. ROGERS, IT'S YOU I LIKE' PREMIERES MARCH 6 ON PBS.
