Tonight, on a special edition of MetroFocus, school shootings in America and the call for immediate change. The protests, the marches, and the walkouts have only just begun, students are now rising to stem the epidemic from the front lines. Their demand is to fix it! But does the right to bear arms in this country trump the right to safety? We’re on the search for solutions not by those who currently hold power, but by the next generation. Our children and our grandchildren want their say, and they will ultimately decide the fate of this country.

>>> TONIGHT, A SPECIAL EDITION
OF "METROFOCUS," SCHOOL
SHOOTINGS IN AMERICA AND THE
LAWS THAT NEED TO BE CHANGED.
>> THE MARCHES HAVE JUST BEGUN.
THEIR DEMAND, FIX IT.
>> SENATOR RUBIO, CAN YOU TELL
ME RIGHT NOW THAT YOU WILL NOT
ACCEPT A SINGLE DONATION FROM
THE NRA IN THE FUTURE?
>> WE'RE GOING TO WORK VERY
HARD, IT'S VERY DIFFICULT, IT'S
VERY COMPLEX BUT WE'RE GOING TO
FIND A SOLUTION.
>> WE'RE ON THE SEARCH FOR
SOLUTION NOT FROM THOSE WHO
CURRENTLY HOLD POWER, BUT FROM
OUR CHILDREN, THEY ARE OUR
FUTURE AND THEY WILL ULTIMATELY
DECIDE THE FATE OF THIS COUNTRY.
"METROFOCUS" STARTS RIGHT NOW.
>>> THIS IS "METROFOCUS," WITH
RAFAEL P. RAMON, JACK FORD AND
JENNA FLANNIGAN.
FUNDING FOR THIS PROGRAM WAS
PROVIDED BY --
>>> ALL THE SCHOOL SHOOTINGS, IT
DOESN'T MAKE SENSE, FIX IT.
IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ONE SCHOOL
SHOOTING AND WE SHOULD HAVE
FIXED IT.
AND I'M PISSED BECAUSE MY
DAUGHTER, I'M NOT GOING TO SEE
AGAIN.
SHE'S NOT HERE.
SHE'S NOT HERE.
SHE'S AT NORTH LAUDERDALE, WHAT
IT IS, KING DAVID CEMETERY.
THAT'S WHERE I GO TO SEE MY KID
NOW.
WE ALL NEED TO WORK TOGETHER AND
COME UP WITH THE RIGHT IDEA.
SCHOOL SAFETY, IT'S NOT ABOUT
GUN LAWS RIGHT NOW.
THAT'S ANOTHER FIGHT, ANOTHER
BATTLE.
LET'S FIX THE SCHOOLS THEN YOU
GUYS CAN BATTLE IT OUT.
MONDAY, THE KIDS ARE GOING TO GO
TO SCHOOL.
DO YOU THINK EVERYONE'S KIDS ARE
SAFE?
I DIDN'T THINK IT WAS GOING TO
HAPPEN TO ME.
IF I KNEW THAT, I WOULD HAVE
BEEN ABT THE SCHOOL EVERY DAY I
I KNEW IT WAS THAT DANGEROUS.
THAT'S ENOUGH, GET TOGETHER,
WORK WITH THE PRESIDENT AND FIX
IT.
THAT'S IT.
GET THE RIGHT PEOPLE, THE
CONSULTANTS.
THESE ARE OUR COMMODITIES.
I'M NEVER GOING TO SEE MY KID
AGAIN.
I WANT YOU ALL TO KNOW THAT,
NEVER, EVER WILL I SEE MY KID.
I WANT IT TO SINK IN.
MY BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER, I'M NEVER
GOING TO SEE AGAIN, AND IT'S
SIMPLE.
WE CAN FIX IT.
>> PASSIONATE AND ANGRY WORDS AT
THE WHITE HOUSE WEDNESDAY FROM A
GRIEVING FATHER.
ANDREW POLLOCK'S DAUGHTER MEADOW
WAS SAVAGELY GUNNED DOWN ON WHAT
SHOULD HAVE BEEN A TYPICAL DAY
AT MARJORIE STONEMAN DOUGLAS
HIGH SCHOOL IN FLORIDA.
WELCOME TO "METROFOCUS," SCHOOL
SHOOTINGS IN AMERICA AND THE
CALL FOR CHANGE.
THE PROTESTS, THE WALKOUTS AND
THE MARCHES HAVE ONLY JUST
BEGUN.
THE REACTIONS AND FEAR THAT
STUDENTS FACE EVERY DAY JUST BY
WALKING INTO SCHOOL.
TONIGHT WE'RE GOING TO LOOK AT
THOSE ISSUES, THE ROLE OF THE
GOVERNMENT AND THE PRESIDENT'S
REACTION TO THE CRISIS.
WE'LL ALSO LOOK AT THE MENTAL
HEALTH OF STUDENTS, AND THOSE
THAT DISPARAGE THE VICTIMS.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
HOW DO WE ACCOMMODATE THE
CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT TO BEAR
ARMS IN THIS COUNTRY, WITH THE
NEED FOR PERSONAL SAFETY?
WE'LL SEEK TO FIND SOME
SOLUTIONS AND SHARE ANSWERS AS
ACROSS AMERICA CALLS FOR
IMMEDIATE CHANGE HAVE BEEN
SOUNDED AND NOT BY THOSE WHO
CURRENTLY HOLD POWER, BUT BY THE
NEXT GENERATION, OUR CHILDREN
AND OUR GRANDCHILDREN HAVE RISEN
UP AND THEY WILL ULTIMATELY
DECIDE THE FUTURE DIRECTION OF
THIS COUNTRY.
I GOT A LOT OF GROUND TO COVER.
BUT INSTEAD OF INVITING EXPERTS
AND PUNDITS TO THE SHOW.
I WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE PEOPLE
WHOSE LIVES ARE IN THE
CROSSHAIRS EVERY DAY.
JOINING US TONIGHT WITH THEIR
TAKE, ZACK DOUGHERTY, A
16-YEAR-OLD JUNIOR ATOM'S RIVER
HIGH SCHOOL NORTH IN NEW JERSEY.
JOSEPH SIEGEL, A COLUMNIST FOR
THAT SCHOOL'S NEWSPAPER.
AND TORREY SUCHI WHO IS A
GRADUATE OF PARKLAND.
WE'RE HAPPY TO HAVE THEM JOIN
US, THANK YOU ALL FOR SPENDING
SOME TIME WITH US.
LET ME ASK YOU THIS, WE GOT A
LOT OF ISSUES WE'RE GOING TO
TALKING ABOUT.
BUT THE FIRST QUESTION I WANT TO
ASK EACH OF YOU IS, WHAT WAS
YOUR REACTION WHEN YOU FIRST
HEARD ABOUT THIS SHOOTING IN
PARKLAND?
ZACK, I'LL START WITH YOU.
>> I THINK AT FIRST, WHEN IT
POPS UP A NOTIFICATION ON YOUR
PHONE, YOU SEE THAT HEADLINE,
IT'S SOMETHING THAT YOU SEE SO
MUCH THAT YOU JUST PUT IT AWAY
FOR A MOMENT, THIS HAPPENS ALL
THE TIME, NOT IMPORTANT.
AND THEN WHEN YOU GET HOME AFTER
SCHOOL AND YOU WATCH THE NEWS
AND YOU SEE THE 17 VICTIMS,
THAT'S WHEN IT SINKS IN, THESE
ARE STUDENTS, THESE ARE KIDS,
YOU JUST HAD A NORMAL SCHOOL DAY
AND NOW THESE KIDS ARE NOT GOING
TO COME HOME.
IT REALLY, YOUR STOMACH DROPS
AND YOU JUST FEEL FRUSTRATED AND
SICK.
>> HOW ABOUT YOU, YOU'RE NOW IN
COLLEGE AND YOU'RE IN NEW YORK
CITY, WHERE A LOT OF THINGS
HAPPEN, SOME GOOD THINGS BUT
SOME BAD THINGS HAPPEN, WHAT'S
YOUR FIRST REACTION?
>> THERE AREN'T SO MANY GUNS IN
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK CITY IS
MUCH SAFER NOW, I FEEL LUCKY TO
BE IN A RELATIVELY SAFE PLACE.
BUT WHEN THIS HAPPENS ACROSS THE
COUNTRY, IT HAPPENS SO OFTEN, IT
JUST SEEMS LIKE ANOTHER DAY IN
THE LIFE.
>> TORREY, HOW ABOUT YOU?
>> WHEN I FIRST HEARD ABOUT IT,
IT WAS A NOTIFICATIONS OF PEOPLE
MARKING THEMSELVES SAFE.
SO BEING FROM KISSIMMEE,
FLORIDA, I WAS NERVOUS, YOU
KNOW, BROWARD COUNTY IS NOT THAT
FAR AWAY FROM US AND I THINK
ABOUT MY BROTHER WHO'S IN HIGH
SCHOOL AND WHAT WOULD HE DO?
THERE'S NOT ENOUGH TRAINING IN
OUR SCHOOL SYSTEMS NOW.
LIKE IF THAT WERE TO HAPPEN TO
ME, I WOULDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO.
>> LET ME TALK ABOUT WHAT THEN
YOU'VE DONE AND THOUGHT ABOUT
SINCE.
ALL RIGHT, ZACK, I'M GOING TO
START WITH YOU, BECAUSE YOU MADE
THE DETERMINATION YOU WANTED TO
GENERATE A GATHERING, DOWN WHERE
YOU ARE, TOM'S RIVER HIGH SCHOOL
NORTH, AND I WANT TO RUN REAL
QUICKLY HERE A CLIP OF SOME OF
WHAT YOU HAD TO SAY AT THAT
GATHERING AND THEN WE'LL TALK
ABOUT IT.
TAKE A LISTEN TO THIS.
>> OR CONGRESSMEN ARE DOING
NOTHING, OUR LAWMAKERS ARE DOING
NOTHING, BUT IT'S TIME FOR
STUDENTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY,
WHETHER YOU'RE A RED STATE OR A
BLUE STATE, GET INVOLVED IN
CONVERSATIONS IN THEIR
COMMUNITIES, GET TOGETHER WITH
THEIR PARENTS AT DENVEINNER AND
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
>> WHY DID YOU DECIDE THAT YOU
NEEDED TO REACH OUT TO OTHER
STUDENTS, OTHER COMMUNITY
MEMBERS AND DO SOMETHING?
>> THIS WAS AN INCIDENT WHERE
BEING SO CALM, IT FELT LIKE
BEING THE ADULTS AND THE
STUDENTS, WE HAVE A HAD THE SAME
ARGUMENT ON BOTH SIDES.
IT'S BEEN THE ARGUMENT
PERSONALLY FOR MYSELF, SANDY
HOOK, COMING HOME IN SIXTH
GRADE, SOCIAL MEDIA, OUT IN
PUBLIC, THE SAME DEBATE ON BOTH
SIDES, I THOUGHT STUDENTS HAVE
SO MUCH PULL AND SO MUCH ABILITY
TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE, THAT MAYBE
THIS IS TIME NOW TO STOP THE
SHOOTINGS AND GET INVOLVED NOW.
>> WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE
NOTION OF STUDENTS, YOUNG
PEOPLE, HIGH SCHOOL AGE, WHO ARE
NOT OF VOTING AGE MANY OF THEM.
EVEN AT YOUR LEVEL, COLLEGE,
GRADUATE STUDENTS, WHAT DO YOU
THINK ABOUT THE ROLE OF STUDENTS
NOW?
>> SURE, EVERYBODY, YOU KNOW,
WHO HAS AN OPINION OUGHT TO
SHARE IT AND ADD TO THE
CONVERSATION.
I'M APPRECIATIVE, ESPECIALLY OF
PEOPLE WHO ARE PERSONALLY
AFFECTED BY THIS, KIDS GO IN
EVERY DAY AND THEY FELL LIKE
THEY'RE AT RISK.
SO I, YOU KNOW, I'M REALLY HAPPY
TO SEE PEOPLE WANTING TO MAKE
CHANGE, BECAUSE THERE DO NEEDS
TO BE CHANGE.
>> ZACK, CAN WE COME BACK TO YOU
FOR A SECOND?
BEFORE THIS HAPPENED IN
PARKLAND, WHEN YOU WALKED INTO
SCHOOL EVERY DAY, DID YOU SAY TO
YOURSELF, I WONDER IF SOMETHING
MIGHT HAPPEN HERE TODAY BEFORE
THE FLORIDA SHOOTINGS?
>> I THINK EVERY DAY YOU GO IN
THERE, YOU WANT TO THINK IT'S
GOING TO BE A NORMAL DAY AND YOU
WANT TO GO TO SCHOOL AND NOT
THINK ABOUT IT.
AND I THINK EVERY TIME YOU HEAR,
YOU KNOW, A LOUD BANG, OR
SOMETHING GOES ON IN THE SCHOOL,
THERE'S A LOCK DOWN DRILL, YOU
START TO GET THAT FEELING OF
FEAR.
>> IS THAT PART OF YOUR DAILY
ROUTINE EVEN BEFORE WHAT
HAPPENED IN PARKLAND, THAT
SOMEWHERE IN THE BACK OF YOUR
MIND THERE'S THIS NOTION THAT
OH, MY, THIS MIGHT BE A SHOOTER?
>> I THINK EVERY TIME I STARTS
AN INCIDENT, THERE'S A LONG
STRETCH OF TIME THAT STUDENTS
FEEL THAT WAY AND THEN WE
FORGET.
AND THEN IT HAPPENS AGAIN WHERE
WE'RE IN THAT FEELING WHERE WE
DON'T KNOW WHAT'S GOING TO
HAPPEN.
>> YOU WENT TO HIGH SCHOOL IN
FLORIDA?
>> YES.
>> DID YOU HAVE ANY FEAR WALKING
INTO THE HALLS OF YOUR HIGH
SCHOOL EACH MORNING?
>> NO, I DIDN'T.
AND SOMEONE ASKED ME THE OTHER
DAY WHAT WAS THE FIRST STRIKING
MOMENT THAT SCHOOL SHOOTINGS
BECAME RELEVANT FOR ME AND THAT
WAS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL.
AND AS WE HAVE BEEN SAYING,
THERE'S THAT TIME, SO VIRGINIA
TECH HAPPENED WHEN I WAS IN
MIDDLE SCHOOL.
AND SO THERE WAS A LONG STRETCH
OF TIME, EVEN THOUGH IT'S SO FAR
AWAY, THAT WE'RE HAVING THOSE
CONVERSATIONS IN OUR CLASSROOMS
AND, YOU KNOW, KIND OF JUST
TALKING ABOUT WHAT WOULD HAPPEN
IF A SHOOTER WERE TO COME ON
CAMPUS?
>> IF YOU'RE IN HIGH SCHOOL
NOW --
>> UH-HUH?
>> WOULD YOU BE FEARFUL?
>> I WOULD.
I THINK IT'S SUCH A WEIRD TIME
TO BE LIVING IN AND FOR HIGH
SCHOOL STUDENTS TO NOW BE SEEING
THIS HAPPEN MORE THAN EVER, I
THINK IT IS SCARY.
>> LET ME TALK ABOUT SOME
ISSUES, BECAUSE THERE'S A LOT OF
THINGS NOW THAT ARE BEING
DISCUSSED AND I WOULD LIKE TO
GET YOUR PERSPECTIVES ON IT.
ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS WE'RE
HEARING, AND THERE SEEMS TO BE A
COALESCENS AROUND THIS, IS
NOTION THAT WE HAVE TO BE MUCH
MORE CAREFUL IN TERMS OF
BACKGROUND CHECKS AND IN TERMS
OF A MENTAL ILLNESS AND SOMEONE
WHO DOESN'T HAVE THE MENTAL
CAPACITY TO BE IN POSSESSION OF
A WEAPON.
DO ANY OF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEM
WITH THAT?
YOU'RE GOOD WITH EXPANDING
THOSE?
>> YEAH, I THINK WE SHOULD
INCREASE AND OPEN THAT
CONVERSATION UP, WHAT'S ALREADY
IN PLACE, WHAT'S ON THE BOOKS
AND CAN WE DO ANYTHING TO MAYBE
PREVENT WHAT'S GOING ON.
BECAUSE MENTAL HEALTH IS A BIG
PART OF THIS AND I DON'T THINK
THIS IS A BLACK AND WHITE ISSUE
WHERE IT'S ONE SIDED, I THINK WE
HAVE TO LOOK AT MENTAL HEALTH IS
A BIG FACTOR, AND WE NEED TO
LOOK AT IT AND SEE IF WE CAN DO
ANYTHING ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON.
>> IT'S EXPANDING, TO PAY MORE
ATTENTION, SOME SORT OF CRITERIA
TO FOCUS ON MENTAL HEALTH?
>> OBVIOUSLY MANY OF THE MEN WHO
ARE COMMITTING THESE HORRIBLE
ATROCITIES ARE EXHIBITING SIGS
MENTAL ILLNESS, THOSE WHO SUFFER
FROM DEPRESSION AND THOSE THINGS
DON'T MEAN THAT THEY'RE GOING TO
BE VIOLENT.
>> A LOT OF PEOPLE IN THE MENTAL
HEALTH INDUSTRY ARE SAYING,
WHOA, WHOA, LET'S NOT PUT THE
STAMP ON EVERYBODY BECAUSE
THAT'S NOT USUALLY THE PROBLEM.
>> MOST PEOPLE WHO ARE DEPRESSED
ARE NOT THINKING ABOUT DOING
THIS, BUT WE SHOULD BE LOOKING
CLOSER.
>> THERE SEEMS TO BE THE NOTION
OF LET'S BE CAREFUL ABOUT THIS.
WE HEARD MOMENTS AGO, ANDREW
POLLACK, WHOSE DAUGHTER MEADOW
WAS KILLED.
HE SAID THIS SHOULDN'T BE ABOUT
GUN LAWS NOW, IT SHOULD BE ABOUT
SCHOOL SAFETY.
THE QUESTION IS, CAN YOU
SEPARATE THE TWO?
>> I DON'T THINK THERE IS A
SEPARATION, I THINK IT GOES HAND
IN HAND.
THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS THAT
WE CAN DO TO RAMP UP SECURITY AT
SCHOOLS, BUT THEN THAT CREATES A
FEAR WITHIN ITSELF.
SO IF WE'RE NOT FIXING THE
PROBLEM, THEN IT'S JUST GOING TO
BECOME MORE OF THIS SWIRLING
FEAR FOR OUR STUDENTS AND THAT
SHOULDN'T BE AN EVERYDAY THING
FOR THEM.
>> JUSTIN, I KNOW THAT YOU SAID
AT ONE POINT IN TIME, MAYBE WE
CAN'T RELY JUST ON THE
GOVERNMENT TO BE FIXING THIS.
WHAT DID YOU MEAN BY THAT?
>> WELL, THERE ARE A LOT OF
DIFFERENT PROPOSALS THAT HAVE
BEEN MADE, PEOPLE SAYING WE NEED
CONGRESS TO ACT, I'M NOT SURE
THAT THAT'S REALLY WHERE WE'RE
GOING TO FIND SALVATION FROM
THIS CRISIS.
IN THE CASE OF THIS FLORIDA
SHOOTING, THE FBI HAD BEEN
TIPPED, THEY HAD BEEN SENT A
SCREEN SHOT SAYING THIS KID WAS
GOING TO BE A PROFESSIONAL MASS
SHOOTING, THEY HAVE OVER $3
BILLION IN THE BUDGET AND THEY
HAVE AGENTS IN THE SOUTH FLORIDA
OFFICE AND THEY DID MNOTHING TO
PREVENT THIS.
I DON'T HAVE VERY MUCH FAITH IN
A CENTRAL'SIZED GOVERNMENT TO S
T
SOLVE THIS, BUT I DO FEEL THAT
IT'S NECESSARY TO LOCAL
COMMUNITY LEADERS ARE MORE
VIGILANT.
FOR EXAMPLE, THE POLICE
DEPARTMENT RECEIVED OVER 20 TIPS
AND THEY ALSO DIDN'T DO MANY
THINGS.
>> CLEARLY, AND I'M A FORMER
PROSECUTOR, SO CLEARLY SYSTEMIC
FAILURES IN TERMS OF LAW
ENFORCEMENT THERE.
BUT SOME OF THE ARGUMENTS WE'RE
HEARING ARE, ALL RIGHT,
UNDERSTANDING THAT THEY SHOULD
HAVE DONE MORE AND PERHAPS,
PERHAPS, WE'LL NEVER KNOW,
TRAGICALLY, BUT PERHAPS COULD
HAVE STOPPED THIS.
IF YOU HAD IN PLAY SOME OF THE
SUGGESTIONS WE'RE SEEING, YOU
CAN'T BUY A WEAPON SUCH AS THIS
UNTIL YOU'RE 21 YEARS OLD.
HE WASN'T, HE WAS 19.
PERHAPS EVEN THE NOTION OF
PEOPLE CAN'T BUY THOSE WEAPONS
ANYWAY.
AN AR-15.
NOT SOMETHING THAT WOULD BE SOLD
JUST OUT OF STORES FOR PEOPLE TO
USE FOR WHATEVER PURPOSES THEY
WANT TO USE.
YOU CAN MAKE AN ARGUMENT, CAN
YOU NOT?
THAT THOSE MIGHT HAVE, AGAIN,
WE'LL NEVER KNOW, BUT THOSE
MIGHT HAVE PREVENTED IT?
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
>> IN TERMS OF GUN CONTROL,
THERE'S LOTS OF TALK ABOUT
REINSTATING AN ASSAULT WEAPONS
BAN, AR-15 HAS OFTEN BEEN
VILIFIED IN THE MEDIA.
I DON'T SEE THESE THINGS AS
NECESSARILY BEING SOLUTIONS.
THE DEADLIEST MASS SHOOTING IN
SCHOOLS WAS DONE WITH HANDGUNS,
THE DEADLIEST MASSACRE IN
MICHIGAN WAS DONE WITHOUT ANY
GUNS, AND THE PREVIOUS SHOOTING
WAS VIRGINIA TECH.
THE AR-15 IS NOT AN ESPECIALLY
POWERFUL GUN, IT DOESN'T FIRE
ANY FASTER THAN HANDGUNS, IT
ACTUALLY IS BANNED OR AT LEAST
IT WAS FROM BEING USED FOR
HUNTING PURPOSES BECAUSE IT
WASN'T INSUFFICIENTLY POWERFUL
TO KILL DEER AND IT WOULD
INFLICT HARM IF THE DEER WASN'T
FULLY KILLED.
SO THERE ARE PROBLEMS HERE WITH
THE SOLUTIONS BEING PROPOSED IN
TERMS OF GUN CONTROL.
>> WHAT ABOUT THE NOTION, AND
SOMETIMES I THINK, WE LOOK AT
SOLUTIONS INDIVIDUALLY, SAY, ALL
RIGHT, WE ONLY HAVE TO DO THIS.
AND AS YOU SAID, YOUR POSITION
IS IF THE AR-15 HAD BEEN BANNED,
DOES THAT MEAN THIS SAME GUY
WOULD NOT HAVE COME IN WITH
HANDGUNS, WE DON'T KNOW THAT.
BUT HOW ABOUT MEASURES THAT
FOCUS ON GUN SAFETY THAN GUN
CONTROL.
I OWN A HANDGUN, SO LOOKING AT
IT THAT WAY, DO YOU SEE A
PROBLEM, AND FROM YOUR
GENERATION, WITH PEOPLE FOCUSING
ON SINGLE ISSUES, RIGHT NOW YOU
HEAR A LOT OF YOUNG PEOPLE
SAYING, NOBODY NEEDS TO OWN A
SEMI-AUTOMATIC WEAPON, DO YOU
SEE PEOPLE OF YOUR AGE FOCUSSING
ON SINGLE ISSUES, AND MAYBE NOT
REALIZING WE NEED TO GATHER ALL
OF THESE QUESTIONS AND
CONSIDERATIONS TO FIND
RESOLUTIONS?
>> I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE DO.
AND I THINK IT'S, YOU KNOW,
TREATED AS A BAND-AID FOR THE
PROBLEM AT HAND, IT'S A
SHORT-TERM SOLUTION, DOING --
BANNING AN AR-15, COULD IT
PREVENT?
COULD IT HELP?
ABSOLUTELY, BUT IT'S NOT GOING
TO SOLVE IT 100%.
AND I THINK A LOT OF THE YOUNGER
GENERATION, WE MIGHT FOCUS ON
ONE THING AND I THINK AS A
COMMUNITY, WE HAVE TO
COLLECTIVELY WORK TOGETHER TO
HAVE A LONG-TERM SOLUTION AND
NOT JUST PATCHING IT UP WITH
SCHOOL SECURITY AND THINK WHAT
IS THE ROOT CAUSE OF ALL THESE
SHOOTINGS?
AND HOW CAN WE WORK TOGETHER
WITH MULTIPLE PROBLEM SOLVING
SOLUTIONS TO STEM THAT.
>
>> TORREY, I KNOW YOU IDENTIFY
YOURSELF AS A DEMOCRAT.
FROM HER SPERSPECTIVE THEN WHAT
DO YOU THINK NEEDS TO BE DONE
AND WHAT CONVERSATION SHOULD WE
BE HAVING ABOUT THIS?
>> LIKE YOU SAID, I AM A
DEMOCRAT, BOTH MY PARENTS WERE
IN THE MILITARY, WE OWN GUNS, I
DON'T THINK THERE'S A PROBLEM
WITH THE SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHT
BUT THERE IS A CALL FOR
EDUCATION.
I THINK THAT WE'RE NOT EDUCATING
OUR YOUTH AND THERE ARE PEOPLE
OUT THERE WHO ARE ABOVE US THAT
ARE ADULTS THAT DON'T KNOW WHAT
THE ACTUAL LEGISLATION IS
AFTERNO
AROUND GUNS.
SO I THINK THERE NEEDS TO BE A
PLACE WHERE PEOPLE IN PLAIN
LANGUAGE CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT
THEIR RIGHTS ARE, AND IF THAT
MEANS THAT YOU CAN OWN A GUN,
OKAY THEN WHY SHOULD YOU OWN
MORE THAN ONE GUN?
WHY SHOULD YOU BE ABLE TO BE
ABLE TO PURCHASE A GUN.
WHY AREN'T THERE MORE BACKGROUN
CHECKS AROUND GUNS.
YOU CAN OWN GUNS, BUT THAT CALL
FOR REGULATIONS AREN'T THERE.
>> SO THERE ARE VARIOUS STRATA
THAT YOU CAN LOOK AT.
WHEN I LOOK AT YOUR GENERATION,
YOUR GENERATION IS MALIGNED BY
SOME FOLKS FOR PERHAPS NOT VALID
REASONS, BUT MY GENERATION WAS
INVOLVED, YOUNG PEOPLE, IN THE
AN
ANTI-WAR MOVEMENT.
AND WHEN YOU LOOK BACK ON
HISTORY, SOME WILL SAY THERE WAS
SOME POWER IN THAT GENERATION
LEADING THAT MOVEMENT.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE POWER
IN YOUR GENERATION, AND WHAT
SORT OF POWER DO YOU THINK YOU
HAVE?
LET'S ASK THE SECOND QUESTION
FIRST, YOUR GENERATION, DO YOU
THINK YOU HAVE THE POWER TO
AFFECT CHANGE IN AN ISSUE SUCH
AS THIS?
>> I THINK A LOT OF NEWS OUTLETS
ARE PAYING ATTENTION TO THE KIDS
THAT ARE SPEAKING OUT AFTER
THIS.
AND THAT'S GREAT.
I DON'T THINK BEING YOUNG N
NECESSARILY GIVES YOU MORE
AUTHORITY ON AN ISSUE.
I TEND TO LOOK AT WHAT'S BEING
SAID MORE THAN WHO'S SPEAKING
IT.
SO THE MORE YOU HAVE THE
CONVERSATION, THE MORE YOU'RE
GOING TO GET TO THE TRUTH.
SO I DON'T THINK PEOPLE
SHOULDN'T SPEAK.
>> PART OF THE ATTRACTION IS
WHAT YOU JUST SAID, MANY OF US
CAN LOOK AT YOU, YOUR GENERATION
AND THINK YOU HAVEN'T YET BEEN
LOCKED INTO POSITIONS BY YEARS
OF POLITICAL AFFILIATION, BOTH
SIDES OF THE AISLE BY YEARS OF
ALIGNMENT WITH CERTAIN SOCIETAL
ISSUES WHERE THE REALITY IS, YOU
KNOW, PEOPLE MY AGE, IT'S HARD
TO GET THEM TO CHANGE THEIR
MINDS.
SO DO YOU THINK THAT'S THEN A
VALUE THAT YOU HAVE COMING INTO
THIS?
BECAUSE YOU HAVE SOME THINGS
THAT YOU'RE PLANNING, TELL ME
FIRST SOME OF THE THINGS THAT
YOU'RE INVOLVED WITH THAT ARE
COMING UP AND THEN LETS GOT TO
THE ROLE YOU THINK YOUR
GENERATION CAN HAVE?
>> I JOINED STUDENTS IN ACTION
WHICH KIND OF FORMED WITH MOMS
IN ACTION.
SO MY GOAL RIGHT NOW IS GETTING
KIDS INVOLVED.
SO MANY KIDS HAVE SEEN THE RALLY
IN TOM'S RIVER, SEEING WHAT'S
GOING ON IN D.C. AND ACROSS THE
COUNTRY, WANTING TO GET INVOLVED
AND MAKE THEIR VOICES BE KNOWN.
MY MESSAGE WAS BE IN THE KNOW,
BE AWARE, KNOW THAT YOU HAVE THE
POWER TO ORGANIZE.
EVEN THOUGH I CAN'T VOTE AND YOU
CAN'T VOTE, YOU CAN ORGANIZE AND
STUDENTS DO HAVE A HUGE
INFLUENCE IN THEIR COMMUNITIES
AND RIGHT NOW THERE'S MARCHES
AND THERE'S BEEN TALK OF
WALKOUTS AND RALLIES AND
CONTACTING YOUR LEGISLATORS, AND
STUDENTS CAN DO THAT, AND THAT'S
WHAT'S IMPORTANT RIGHT NOW,
LET'S KEEP IT GOING, NOT MAKING
IT A FIVE-MINUTE CONVERSATION,
MAKING IT A STUDENT ISSUE THAT
HAS TO BE FIXED.
>> DO YOU SEE VALUE IN THESE
RALLIES, WALKOUTS, SIT INS, LIE
INS, WE HAVE SEEN OUTSIDE OF THE
WHITE HOUSE?
>> THAT'S NOT MY PERSONAL STYLE
OF, YOU KNOW, CONVEYING MY
OPINIONS.
BUT I WOULDN'T DISCOURAGE ANYONE
FROM SPEAKING OUT THE WAY THAT
THEY FEEL FIT.
>> TORREY, HOW ABOUT YOU?
>> I THINK THERE IS VALUE, NOT
IN THE SENSE THAT IT MIGHT
CHANGE SOMETHING, BUT STUDENTS
ARE FEELING THE NEED THAT THEY
NEED TO BE HEARD.
AND THAT EDUCATION PIECE THAT I
HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT, THESE
STUDENTS AREN'T FEELING AS
THOUGH THEY'RE BEING HEARD, SO
THEY'RE GOING TO DO WHATEVER
THEY CAN TO BE HEARD.
AND, YOU KNOW, IT SHOULD BE ON
THE POLITICIANS AND THE
LEGISLATORS AND OUR STATES TO
REALLY LISTEN IN AND HEAR WHAT
OUR STUDENTS HAVE TO SAY BECAUSE
THEY HAVE VALID POINTS AND THEY
WANT TO GET THAT ACROSS.
SO THEY'RE GOING TO DO IT IN
WHATEVER MEDIUM THAT MEANS.
>> DOES THIS MOVEMENT OF YOURS
LAST?
I MEAN, WE HAVE TALKED ABOUT A
COUPLE OF YOU WHO HAVE SAID,
IT'S SORT OF TERRIFYING HOW
THESE INSTANCES TAKE PLACE, AND
THERE'S CONVERSATION AND THERE'S
A DRUM BEAT FOR CHANGE AND THEN
IT KIND OF GOES AWAY.
THEN SADLY, WE'RE CONFRONTED
WITH THE SAME TYPE OF TRAGEDY.
DO YOU THINK, AND I'LL ASK EACH
OF YOU TO WEIGH IN ON THIS, DO
YOU THINK THAT NOW, WE DON'T
KNOW WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN, BUT
DO YOU THINK THIS IS GOING TO
CONTINUE, THIS MOVEMENT BY YOUNG
PEOPLE, YOUR GENERATION?
>> I THINK AS LONG AS THAT FEAR
EXISTS WITH THE MAJORITY OF
STUDENTS DAY TO DAY IN THE
CLASSROOM.
IT SEEMS THAT THAT'S BEEN THE
CONVERSATION BETWEEN TEACHERS
AND STUDENTS, AND AS LONG AS
THAT CONTINUES, STUDENTS ARE
GOING TO WANT TO VOICE THEIR
OPINION AND BE PART OF THIS
MOVEMENT.
AGAIN, THIS ISN'T SOMETHING THAT
CAN BE SOLVED OVERNIGHT, IT'S
GOING TO TAKE A LOT OF TIME
AROUND THE COUNTRY TO REALLY
MOVE TO A BETTER POSITION THAN
WE'RE AT RIGHT NOW.
I DON'T THINK IT'S GOING TO
DISAPPEAR.
>> JUSTIN, WHAT DO YOU THINK?
>> NOW THAT IT'S BECOME, THE
PATTERN HAS BECOME SO CLEAR,
WE'RE STARTING TO GET A BETTER
IDEA OF WHAT IS GOING ON, WE DO
SEE THE PATTERNS, JUST IN THE
NEWS OVER THE PAST WEEK, WHERE
YOU'VE SEEN POTENTIAL SCHOOL
SHOOTERS BEING APPREHENDED BY
THE POLICE.
SO INDIVIDUALS IN THEIR LOCAL,
YOU KNOW, PLACES ARE FINALLY
TAKING ACTION TO STOP THIS.
SO I WOULD LIKE TO HOPE AND I
THINK PERHAPS THAT WE MIGHT NOT
NEED AS MUCH ACTION IN THE NEAR
FUTURE BECAUSE WE'RE FINALLY
STARTING TO UNDERSTAND THIS
ISSUE.
>> TORREY, QUICK THE LAST WORD.
>> I THINK THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE
GOING TO KEEP US ACCOUNTABLE.
I THINK THEY'RE GOING TO REALLY
PUSH THIS ISSUE UNTIL SOMETHING
HAS BEEN DONE, WHETHER THAT
MEANS FULL GUN CONTROL, GUN
SAFETY, OR IF THAT MEANS JUST A
LITTLE BIT OF MORE PUSH IN THE
RIGHT DIRECTION.
>> I WANT TO THANK ALL THREE OF
YOU BECAUSE YOU'VE PROVIDED SOME
REASONED DIALOGUE AND DISCUSSION
HERE, YOU DON'T ALWAYS AGREE ON
EVERYTHING, BUT AGAIN, WE'RE
HAVING A CONVERSATION, THAT'S
IMPORTANT, TORREY, JOSEPH, ZACK,
WE APPRECIATE YOU SHARING WITH
US.
AND WE WANT TO THANK YOU AT HOME
FOR JOINING US ALSO TONIGHT.
BUT LET'S NOT STOP THE
CONVERSATION HERE, WE NEED TO
CONTINUE THIS DIALOGUE, SO HEAD
ON OVER TO OUR FACEBOOK PAGE,
LETS SHARE SOME IDEAS, SHARE OUR
THOUGHTS, SHARE OUR FEELINGS,
IT'S IMPORTANT, LIVES ARE AT
STAKE, OUR FUTURE IS AT STAKE.
SO GO TO "METROFOCUS'S" FACEBOOK

THINK.
SO FROM ALL OF US IN FRONT AND
BEHIND OF THE CAMERA, WE WANT TO
THANK YOU FOR JOINING US
TONIGHT.
