THE RETURN OF THE ROYALS!

The story of one of Britain’s most important monarchs continues as PBS’s hit drama series “Victoria” is back. What’s in store for season 2? Creator Daisy Goodwin and actor Rufus Sewell are here with a preview.

METROFOCUS WEB EXCLUSIVE

In the second half of our interview, Rufus Sewell and Daisy Goodwin get candid about writing Queen Victoria’s “memeable” one liners, the possibility of liberating the young queen from her corset in Season 3, and how the stories redacted from the pages of her diaries slipped their way onto the big screen.

Aired on January 12, 2018.

> IT IS THE RETURN OF THE LOYALS AS SEASON TWO OF THE HIT DRAMA SERIES 'VICTORIA' PREMIERES JANUARY 14th AT 9:00 P.M. ON PBS.

THE STORY OF YOUNG QUEEN VICTOR I WHO WANTS IT ALL.

CAPTIVATED MORE THAN 16 MILLION VIEWERS.

JENNA FLANAGAN HAD THE CHANCE TO CHAT WITH THE WRITER, CREATOR AND EXECUTIVE PRODUCER AND FAMED ACTOR ROOFIS WHO RETURNS AS LORD MELBOURNE.

THE FIRST PRIME MINISTER AND FRIEND.

SHE BEGAN BY ASKING WHERE DO WE FIND VICTORIA AS THE NEW SEASON BEGINS?

SHE'S JUST HAD HER FIRST CHILD, AND SHE'S COMING BACK AS IT WERE FROM MATERNITY LEAVE BECAUSE SHE'S BEEN IN CONFINEMENT FOR SIX WEEKS, WHICH IS WHAT HAPPENED AFTER YOU HAD A BABY.

YOU WERE BASICALLY WHEELED AROUND IN A BATH CHAIR, AND SHE'S COME BACK TO FIND THAT HER HUSBAND ALBERT HAS BEEN RATHER TOO EFFECTIVE MATERNITY COVER WHILE SHE'S BEEN OFF.

THERE IS A FRICTION BETWEEN THEM BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, SHE'S WANTING TO COME BACK AND TAKE UP THE REIGNS BUT SEEMS A LITTLE TOO COMFORTABLE SITTING ON HER THROWN.

IN A WORD THAT COMES TO MIND FOR ME WHEN THINKING ABOUT THIS SERIES IS FEMINISM.

WE SEE VICTORIA STRUGGLING BETWEEN MARRIAGE, FAMILY AND HER JOB, WHICH IS OF COURSE, LEADING A COUNTRY.

WAS THAT INTENTIONAL?

THAT ACCIDENTAL THAT THAT BECAME SUCH A PROMINENT PART OF THE SCRIPT?

OH, DOEFINITELY.

THAT'S A REASON I LOVE WRITING ABOUT VICTORIA.

MANY OF THE DILEMMAS SHE FACES IS ONE MOST MODERN WOMEN FACE, WHICH IS HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH A HUSBAND WHEN YOU'RE MAKING MORE MONEY THAN HE IS, FOR EXAMPLE, OR, YOU KNOW, WHO LOOKS AFTER THE CHILDREN WHEN YOUR JOB IS MORE IMPORTANT, ET SCETERA AND HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT MASCULINE PRIDE WHEN YOU'RE THE BOSS?

I THINK SHE ALSO FEELS A LITTLE BIT IN OR OF IT BECAUSE HE'S SO INTELLIGENT AND SO GOOD AT EVERYTHING.

SHE'S FEELING HOW DO I, YOU KNOW, WHAT'S MY ROLE IN THIS AND HOW CAN I PROVE WHAT I CAN DO.

THAT'S A REASON SHE GOES TO SEE HER MENTOR LORD MELBOURNE FOR ADVICE ON THIS VERY MATTER.

HOW DOES THEIR RELATIONSHIP CHANGE NOW THAT SHE'S OLDER AND MORE MATURE?

I THINK HE FITS INTO IT NEATLY, ACTUALLY.

MORE NEATLY THAN PERHAPS HE MIGHT HAVE DONE THE FIRST SEASON.

THE THING ABOUT LORD MELBOURNE BECAUSE OF HIS MOTHER, HIS MOTHER WAS A REALLY INTELLIGENT, INDEPENDENT, FEISTY WOMAN AND HIS FATHER WAS QUITE WIDELY KNOWN.

THE RULER OF THE FAMILY WAS THE MOTHER.

HE DREW UP WITH AN ENORMOUS RESPECT AND ATTRACTION TOWARD A VERY, VERY STRONG INDEPENDENT INTELLIGENT WOMEN.

THAT WAS HIS WEAK SPOT.

ALL OF THE TROUBLE SPOTS IN HIS LIFE WERE BECAUSE HE GOT INVOLVED WITH WOMEN WHO GOT INTO TROUBLE AND HE WAS CONNECTED WITH THEM AND GREAT SUPPORTERS OF THEIRS.

SO IT WAS VERY SECOND NATURE FOR HIM WHEN VICTORIA COMES TO HIM TO SAY THIS IS THE PROBLEM I'M HAVING BE MY HUSBAND TO BE ABLE TO IN THE NEW RELATIONSHIP, WHICH IS LESS COMPLICATED NOW, TO BE ABLE TO SAY IT'S NOT UNLIKE A MAN TO BE THREATENED BY A WOMAN.

IT'S NOT -- HE WOULDN'T BE THE FIRST MAN TO UNDER ESTIMATE A WOMAN AND TO ENCOURAGE HER FOR BEING WHO SHE IS BECAUSE NO DOUBT HE'S AN INTELLIGENT PERSON AND IN MANY WAYS, HE'S QUITE FORWARD THINKING IN THAT WAY.

I THINK SHE WAS ABLE, SHE HAD A VERY RELAXED RELATIONSHIP AND WHICH WAS SOMETHING SHE DIDN'T REALLY HAVE WITH ALBERT BECAUSE THEY HAD THE SAME SENSE OF HUMOR WHICH ALBERT WITH HIS GORGEOUS ABILITY WAS NOT AS RELAXED OR FUNNY OR AS WHITTY AS MELBOURNE.

HE WAS ABLE TO GIVE ADVICE ON THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING.

WHAT.

Caller: COLOR DRESS TO WEAR AND COLOR DRESS TO WEAR AND DON'T WEAR EARRINGS AND HE WOULD TELL HER SHE'S PUTTING ON WEIGHT.

I LOVE PERIOD DRAMAS AND IT SEEMS AS IF WE'VE BEEN SEEING A LOT OF PIECES POP UP IN THE MEDIA LATELY AND I'M WONDERING IF MAKING OR AS A HISTORIAN GOING BACK AND LEARNING ABOUT AND RESEARCHING THESE DIFFERENT ERAS, DOES IT HELP US UNDERSTAND OR MAKE SENSE OF THE TIME WE LIVE IN NOW BECAUSE THIS PAST YEAR 2017 HAS BEEN SO TRYING FOR EVERYONE BUT IT SEEMS LIKE IT'S ALL MOST HELPFUL TO BE ABLE TO LOOK AT A DIFFERENT TIME AND A DIFFERENT PLACE WHEN PEOPLE MIGHT HAVE LIVED THROUGH SOMETHING THAT WAS JUST AS OR EVEN MORE STRESSFUL AND TRYING AND MADE IT OUT THE OTHER SIDE.

THE THINGS I LOVE ABOUT VICTORIA IS SHE HAS CONTROL AND SHE'S A WOMAN WHO MAKES HER OWN DESTINY.

SHE'S NOT THE LOVE INTEREST.

SHE'S NOT THE KIND OF, SHE'S NOT THE VICTIM, SHE IS THE AUTHOR OF HER OWN FATE AND I THINK AT A TIME, ESPECIALLY NOW, WHEN WE GOT THIS HARASSMENT TSUNAMI, IT'S NICE TO SEE A WOMAN WHO IS IN CHARGE OF HER DESTINY.

WELL, I'M SURE THE BOTH OF YOU HAVE STUDIED THE VICTORIAN ERA HAS MANY OF US HAVE AND I'M WONDERING IF GOING THROUGH THE PROCESS OF MAKING A SERIES LIKE VICTORIA GAVE EITHER ONE OF YOU A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE TIME AND THE PERIOD IN WHICH A LOT OF THESE EVENTS OCCURRED BECAUSE IT SEEMS LIKE SO MUCH OF OUR MODERN ERA RIGHT NOW HAS ECHOED, IF YOU WILL, OF THE PAST IN IT AS WE GO THROUGH AND TRY TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO WORK THROUGH OUR OWN TRYING TIMES.

BEFORE YOU ANSWER THAT, THOUGH, I'LL ASK YOU BOTH TO HANG ON AND I'M GOING TO INVITE ALL OF OUR METRO FOCUS VIEWERS TO JOIN US ON THE FACEBOOK PAGE AT METRO FOCUS OR AT METROFOCUS.ORG WHERE WE'LL CONTINUE OUR CONVERSATION ABOUT ALL THINGS VICTORIA.

IF YOU'RE SUPER EAGER TO SEE SEASON TWO OF 'VICTORIA' YOU'RE IN LUCK.

THE SEASON PREMIERES JANUARY 14th AT 9:00 P.M. EASTERN, 8:00 P.M. CENTRAL ON MASTERPIECE ON PBS.
