“PICKLES” & “FLEAS”

Pickles and fleas – they’re probably not something you want your children to consume, at least not together. After our story about two new WNYC Studios podcasts, you may just change your mind.

Listen to “This Podcast Has Fleas” here.

WNYC STUDIOS HAS PRODUCED SOME OF THE MOST CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED POD CASTS IN DECADES.

INCLUDING DEATH, SEX AND MONEY.

AND HERE'S THE THING WITH ALEC BALDWIN.

NOW THEY HAVE TWO NEW POD CASTS.

THIS POD CAST HAS SLEEVES AND PICKLES.

PICKLES TACKLES A VARIETY OF MORAL QUESTIONS, LIKE SHOULD ELEPHANTS BE KEPT IN ZOOS.

THIS POD CAST HAS FLEAS, IT'S ABOUT A LOVABLE CAT AND DOG WHO LIVE UNDER THE SAME ROOF AND HAVE COMPETING POD CASTS.

JOINING ME NOW TO TALK ABOUT THESE NEW KID FRIENDLY PROGRAMS ARE PAULA SCHUMAN, SHE IS THE VICE PRESIDENT OF ON DEMAND CONTENT AT WNYC STUDIOS.

CO CREATOR OF THIS POD CAST HAS FLEAS.

WELCOME, LADIES.

THIS IS A NEW DIRECTION FOR WNYC TO BE FORAGING INTO KID'S CONTENT, FIRST OF ALL, WHY?

GREAT FIRST QUESTION.

WE HAVE A HUGE PORTFOLIO, BUT UNTIL NOW WE HAVEN'T HAD POD CASTS FOR KIDS.

NOT JUST FOR KIDS, BUT FOR THEIR FAMILIES AND THEIR GROWN-UPS.

AND, YOU KNOW, WE'VE HEARD FROM OUR LISTENERS AND WE'VE HEARD FROM OUR MEMBERS THAT THEY WANT SOMETHING -- THEY LISTEN TO POD CASTS ALREADY, THEY WANT TO BE ABLE TO HAVE SOMETHING THEY CAN SHARE WITH THEIR KIDS.

OUR AUDIENCE, WE BELIEVE IS LONGING FOR THIS KIND OF CONTENT, AND SO WE'RE GOING FOR IT.

IT SOUNDS LIKE THE KIND OF CONTENT WHERE YOU WERE SAYING, PARENTS CAN LISTEN TO AND NOT FEEL TENSE ABOUT SOME OTHER KIDS PROGRAMMING WHILE KIDS CAN ALSO APPRECIATE IT.

THAT'S THE CASE?

YES.

CERTAINLY WITH THIS POD CAST HAS FLEAS OUR GOAL WAS TO ENGAGE THE KIDS AND THE PARENTS.

WE IMAGINE THAT A LOT OF THE TIMES THAT THIS POD CAST WILL BE PLAYED WILL BE IN THE CAR OR WHILE THE PARENT IS COOKING DINNER.

WE'RE TALKING ABOUT A REAL CO LISTENING ENVIRONMENT.

IT'S VERY MUCH A STORY SET IN A RELATABLE SETTING.

THERE'S A HOUSE, DOG, CAT, THEY HAVE COMPETING POD CASTS AND THEIR APPROACHES TO THE POD CASTS ARE DIFFERENT.

THE DOG HAS THIS DOWN HOME LOW TECH APPROACH.

AND THE CAT HAS THE OPPOSITE.

HE'S SUPER TECHED OUT, HE HAS AUTO TUNE AND FULLY PRODUCED MUSIC MOMENTS.

AND SO JUST THE CONTRAST OF THESE TWO ALONE CREATES THIS FUN INTERPLAY WITH THEM.

THEN IN EVERY EPISODE, THEY HAVE TO KIND OF TACKLE AND NAVIGATE A HOUSEHOLD EVENT.

TURNING TO PICKLE.

THAT SEEMS LIKE THIS POD CAST COULDN'T COME AT A BETTER TIME.

THERE'S SO MANY LARGE ISSUES HAPPENING IN THE WORLD, AND IT CAN FEEL CHALLENGING TO ADDRESS SOME OF THEM.

TELL ME ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF WHAT SOUNDS LIKE AN ATTEMPT TO HELP KIDS LEARN TO SING CRITICALLY.

ONE OF THE HOSTS IS FROM AUSTRALIA.

THEY HAVE AN ETHICS SHOW CALLED SHORT AND CURLEY.

WE'VE AZAPTED THIS, WE MADE OUR OWN SORT OF AMERICAN VERSION OF IT, WITH THEM, CALLED PICKLE.

AND HIS CO-HOST WHICH IS A LONG TIME WNYC REPORTER AND HOST.

WE HAVE AN ETHICIST WHO IS A PHILOSOPHY PROFESSOR, AND WE HAVE KIDS WEIGHING IN.

WE ASK THESE QUESTIONS, IF YOU LISTEN TO THEM, THEY FEEL LIKE -- YOU'RE EXACTLY RIGHT, IT'S FOR KIDS, BUT THESE QUESTIONS AFFECT US ALL RIGHT NOW.

OUR FIRST EPISODE IS ABOUT TATTLING AND WHEN IS IT RIGHT TO TELL ON SOMEONE?

WHEN IS IT NOT RIGHT TO TELL ON SOMEONE.

I WAS LISTENING TO IT THIS WEEK, AND I FELT LIKE, THIS FEELS LIKE EXTREMELY RELEVANT.

LADIES, I WANT TO THANK YOU BOTH FOR JOINING US ON METROFOCUS, AND SHARING WITH US ABOUT THESE NEW POD CASTS COMING PUP.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.
