> MARK MOERIAL IS NO STRANGER TO PUBLIC SERVICE.

FORMER MAYOR ENTREPRENEUR, PRACTICING ATTORNEY, PROFESSOR, LEGISLATOR, AND PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE, LARGEST CIVIL RIGHTS ORGANIZATION IN THE COUNTRY.

IN A MULTIFACETED CAREER OVER A QUARTER OF CENTURY HAS CONSISTENTLY TACKLED ISSUES DIVIDING THE NATION AND JOINS US NOW TO TALK ABOUT THE CHALLENGES TODAY AND HOW WE CAN COME TOGETHER TO OVERCOME THEM.

THANKS FOR HAVING ME.

I DESCRIBED IT BRIEFLY, NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE.

BUT COULD YOU TALK ABOUT IT?

FOUNDED IN 1910.

HISTORIC CIVIL RIGHTS AND URBAN ADVOCACY ORGANIZATION.

WE HAVE A CIVIL RIGHTS MISSION.

FOCUS WORK IN URBAN COMMUNITIES.

IN CITIES ACROSS THE NATION SERVE OR PROVIDE SERVICES TO ALMOST 2 MILLION PEOPLE A YEAR.

WE HELP PEOPLE FIND JOBS, BECOME HOMEOWNERS, YOUNG PEOPLE FIND THEIR WAY TO COLLEGE THROUGH INCREDIBLE PROGRAMS AND DIRECT SERVICES INITIATIVES WE UNDERTAKE IN COMMUNITIES ACROSS THE NATION.

TELL US HOW IT IS.

I HEARD YOU SPEAK AND TALKED ABOUT SPECIFIC DIVIDES.

YOU TALKED ABOUT THE DIGITAL DIVIDE.

WANTED TO GET INTO THE CAPITAL DIVIDE.

CAPITAL DIVIDE, TALK ABOUT THAT FIRST.

SINCE I JOINED THE NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE, WE'VE PUT A LOT OF FOCUS ON SMALL BUSINESS GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT, FOCUSING ON AFRICAN-AMERICAN OWNED AND WOMEN OWNED BUSINESSES.

WE NOW HAVE 13 CENTERS THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES THAT PROVIDE COACHING AND COUNSELING.

AND SMALL BUSINESS LOAN FUND IN PARTNERSHIP WITH MORGAN STANLEY, A NUMBER OF BANKS, FOCUSED ON LOANING IN CLEVELAND, LOOKING TO EXPAND BEYOND.

MANY SMALL BUSINESSES, AFRICAN-AMERICAN AND WOMEN OWNED BUSINESSES STRUGGLE NOT BECAUSE THEY DON'T WORK HARD, HAVE GOOD IDEAS OR BUSINESS ACUMEN, BUT DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO CAPITAL.

INSTEAD OF TALKING ABOUT IT, WE ADVOCATE STRONGLY SBA SHOULD DO MORE, BANKS SHOULD DO MORE.

WE DECIDED TO BRING BANKS AND OTHER NONPROFITS TOGETHER TO CREATE THIS LOAN.

WHEN YOU WERE MAYOR OF NEW ORLEANS, YOU WERE SUCCESSFUL AT THAT.

WHAT CAN LOCAL GOVERNMENTS DO?

BRING STAKEHOLDERS TOGETHER.

A MAYOR CAN BRING THE BANKS TOGETHER WITH THE SMALL BUSINESS COMMUNITY, CREATE INITIATIVES AND USE HIS OR HER BULLY PULPIT OF PERSUASION TO ENCOURAGE THE BANKS TO INVEST MORE.

BANKS CAN USE THE LEVERAGE THAT THEY'RE MAJOR CUSTOMER AND HAVE DEPOSITTORY RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE BANKS.

DIGITAL DIVIDE.

WHAT IS IT AND WHAT IS IT DIVIDING?

IF YOU DON'T HAVE IPHONE OR CELL PHONE OR PHONE WITH BROADBAND CONNECTIVITY OR DESKTOP AND HOME COMPUTER, YOU'RE GOING TO MISS OUT.

KIDS CAN'T DO HOMEWORK, YOU CAN'T APPLY FOR JOB, ACCESS CITY SERVICES.

DIGITAL DIVIDE TO THE EXTENT THERE ARE COMMUNITIES WITHOUT HIGH SPEED BROADBAND CONNECTIVITY.

NUMBER ONE.

AND GOES BEYOND THAT.

DIGITAL DIVIDE ALSO GOES TO WHO IS ABLE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE BROAD ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITIES THAT THIS DIGITAL REVOLUTION HAS CREATED.

COMMUNITIES OF COLOR AND POOR AMERICANS OF ALL COLORS ARE ON THE LOSING SIDE OF THAT DIVIDE?

INTERESTING THING.

PEOPLE OF COLOR, THE PENETRATION RATE FOR CELL PHONES IS HIGHER FOR THEM, PARTICULARLY YOUNG BLACKS AND YOUNG LATINOS, THAN FOR THE MAINSTREAM.

BUT WHEN YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT THE MORE PRIZED OR TREASURED ASSET, WHICH IS A COMPUTER AT HOME THAT HAS BROADBAND CONNECTIVITY AND LOTS OF, IF YOU WILL, POWER AND ABILITY TO DO THINGS, PEOPLE OF COLOR ARE BEHIND.

PEOPLE OF COLOR ARE LEFT OUT.

IN SOME CASES EVEN RURAL COMMUNITIES ARE LEFT BEHIND.

BUT I'M NOT SATISFIED WITH JUST CLOSING THAT DIVIDE.

I THINK THAT THE COUNTRY NEEDS TO ENSURE IN THIS VAST OCEAN OF OPPORTUNITY, THE DIGITAL ECONOMY, THAT THE JOB AND BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES, CHANCE TO TRULY, TRULY BENEFIT, GROW COMMUNITIES, HAS TO BE BROADLY SHARED.

GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE FOCUSING ON THAT, PRIVATE SECTOR SHOULD BE FOCUSING ON THAT, URBAN LEAGUE IS ABSOLUTELY FOCUSING ON THAT.

AS YOU KNOW, A LOT OF PROGRESSIVE ORGANIZATIONS ARE POSTURED TOWARD TRUMP ADMINISTRATION WITH PROTEST AND RESISTANCE.

WE WILL RESIST ANY POLICY UNDERTAKEN BY ANYBODY OFFENDS OR IS INCONSISTENT WITH OUR VALUES, PRINCIPLES AND MISSION.

WE WILL HOWEVER, APPROACH THINGS THAT WE HAVE NO PERMANENT FRIENDS OR ENEMIES, ONLY PERMANENT INTERESTS.

THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE SAYING WE'RE CONFRONTING A PERIOD OF HATE AND INTOLERANCE WE HAVEN'T SEEN IN A LONG TIME.

DO YOU BELIEVE THAT'S THE CASE AND HOW CAN WE, ALL OF US --

IT'S REGRETTABLE.

-- END THAT?

IT'S REGRETTABLE IT'S THE CASE.

NUMBERS OF HATE CRIMES HAVE SPIKED IN THE UNITED STATES.

HATE AND BIGOTRY ARE INCONSISTENT WITH WHAT AMERICA IS ABOUT.

WE HAVE TO OPPOSE IT.

I THOUGHT THAT AFTER CHARLOTTESVILLE, YOU SAW A BROAD ORCHESTRA OF VOICES, A BROAD SYMPHONY OF VOICES FROM THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY, FAITH COMMUNITY, POLITICAL COMMUNITY.

CERTAINLY FROM CIVIL RIGHTS COMMUNITY WHICH ALWAYS ON THESE ISSUES LEADS THE WAY, UNIVERSALLY CONDEMNED THE HATE ACTIVITIES AND INCITING OF VIOLENCE IN CHARLOTTESVILLE.

AND ALSO, CALLED THE PRESIDENT TO TASK ON HIS LACK OF CLARITY.

THAT WAS AN IMPORTANT POINT FOR THE NATION.

MR. MAYOR, THANK YOU SO MUCH.

THANKS FOR HAVING ME.

> WHEN THE TROUBLE STARTED AT TRUMP TOWER, WHO BROKE THE STORY?

WHEN DONALD FLEW OFF TO WATCH A FIGHT?

WHO CLUED YOU IN?

WHEN IVANA AND DONALD SPLIT, WHO HAD ALL THE INTIMATE DETAILS?

LIZ SMITH.

RIGHT FROM THE START WITH THE EXCLUSIVE.

WHEN PEOPLE HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY, THEY TALK TO LIZ SMITH.

CELEBRITY COLUMNIST LIZ SMITH, KNOWN IN MANY CIRCLES AGRAND DAME OF DISH PASSED AWAY SUNDAY AT AGE OF 94.

WITH HER DEATH, QUINTESSENTIAL PIECE OF NEW YORK SOCIETY AND JOURNALISM GOES WITH HER.

TOUGH TEXAN WITH A QUICK WIT AND FINGER ON THE PULSE OF NOT JUST THE CITY BUT THE STARS SHE COVERED.

IN DOING SO, LIZ SMITH HERSELF BECAME PART OF THE A LIST AS WELL.

AFTER STINTS AS ASSISTANT FOR MIKE WALLACE IN PRODUCTION FOR 'CANDID CAMERA' OR WRITER AT 'COSMO,' STARTED APPEARING UNDER HER BYLINE.

UNFOLDED FOR ALL OF US AROUND THE COUNTRY AND AROUND THE WORLD.

COLUMN SYNDICATED IN OVER 70 PAPERS.

LIZ BROKE AND CHRONICLED DAY-TO-DAY DEALINGS IN THE DIVORCE OF THEN REAL ESTATE MAGNATE AND NOW PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP AND HIS WIFE IVANKA.

IT WAS GOSSIP ON THE FRONT PAGE.

LIZ WAS THERE TO REPORT ON THE TURBULENT LIVES OF ACTRESS ELIZABETH TAYLOR AND HER FREQUENT HUSBAND RICHARD BURTON.

LIZ SAID THE FRIENDSHIP HELPED MAKE MY CAREER, DIDN'T DO THEM ANY HARM EITHER.

WON AN EMMY FOR REPORTING AT LIVE AT 5.

HOST AND METEOROLOGIST AL ROKER REFLECTED, I WAS FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO WORK WITH LIZ SMITH AT WNBC.

SHE WAS NOTHING SHORT OF FABULOUS.

LIZ PASSED AWAY AT 94 AND WITH HER A PIECE OF NEW YORK.

CELEBRITIES ALSO CHIMED IN.

ROB LOWE HEAPED SINCERE PRAISE ON THE LATE COLUMNIST TWEETING QUOTE, LOVED LIZ SMITH, SMART AND FUNNY, GOSSIP FROM THE HIGH ROAD.

ACTOR JAMES WOODS ADDED, LIZ SMITH WAS THE DEFINITION OF A LADY, SHE DISHED BUT ALWAYS FOUND A WAY TO MAKE IT ENTERTAINING AND FUN.

#RIPLIZ.

AND HOLLYWOOD ICON BERNADETTE PETERS PUT IS SIMPLY.

RIP LIZ SMITH, BEST OF THE BEST.

MISS SMITH WAS ALSO PASSIONATE ABOUT CHARITIES NEAR AND DEAR TO HER.

HELPED RAISE MILLIONS FOR A VARIETY OF GROUPS, MOST NOTABLY LITERACY VOLUNTEERS, TEACHES ADULTS TO READ AND WRITE.

ALSO A MAJOR PLAYER IN THE WOMEN'S ACTION ALLIANCE WHICH PROMOTES GENDER EQUALITY.

MISS SMITH TOLD THE ASSOCIATED PRESS IN 1987 QUOTE WE MUSTN'T TAKE OURSELVES TOO SERIOUSLY IN THIS WORLD OF GOSSIP.

WHAT I DO REALISTICALLY ISN'T THAT SIGNIFICANT, STILL I'M HAVING A LOT OF FUN.

INDEED, SHE DID.

> IT IS NICE TO SPOTLIGHT THE GOOD WORKS OF PEOPLE AND ORGANIZATIONS IN THE METROPOLITAN AREA, ONE OF THE THEM, HORIZONS PROGRAM HAS BEEN PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES TO LOW INCOME FAMILIES OVER 20 YEARS.

SIX WEEK PROGRAM EVERY SUMMER TEACHES STUDENTING CORE CURRICULUM AND NEEDED LIFE SKILLS.

THROUGH A MIX OF FUN AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES LIKE SWAIM SWIMMING AND CLASSROOM ACTIVITY, SUMMER HEAT DOESN'T DETER THE STUDENTS FROM A LIFETIME OF SUCCESS.

CHASING THE DREAM, POVERTY IN AMERICA.

LOOK AT SUCCESS OF THE HORIZONS PROGRAM AND HOW WE ALL CAN COMBAT THE EFFECTS OF INCOME INEQUALITY.

JOINED BY JANE WILLIAMS, GOOD FRIEND FOR MANY YEARS AND ALSO THE CHAIR OF HORIZONS NATIONAL.

I'M THRILLED TO BE HERE.

I KNOW THIS HAS BY IMPORTANT FOR YOU FOR NUMBER OF YEARS.

TALK IN A MINUTE ABOUT YOUR INVOLVEMENT.

BUT START WITH THE HORIZONS ORGANIZATION ITSELF.

HOW DID IT GET STARTED AND WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE INITIALLY?

ONE HORIZONS PROGRAM BY ITSELF FOR DECADES WAS LOCATED ON THE CAMPUS OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOL IN CONNECTICUT.

HAPPENED TO BE A PLACE WHERE MY MOM WAS A TEACHER.

IT WAS ALL BY ITSELF.

AND YALE PROGRAM RUN BY ED ZEIGLER STUDIED HORIZONS AND SAID TO US, CONSIDER REPLICATING THIS ELSEWHERE.

THAT'S WHAT WE'VE BEEN DOING.

DID A LOT OF RESEARCH AND STARTED CLONING IT.

NOW OVER 50 PROGRAMS AROUND THE COUNTRY.

YOU'RE RIGHT, WE DO OUR WORK DURING THE SUMMER BUT WHAT WE DO IS LONG-TERM PROGRAM.

CHILDREN CAN COME BACK K-12 SUMMER AFTER SUMMER AND THROUGH THE YEAR WE CHECK IN.

ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT.

TORTOISE VERSUS HARE, NO MAGIC BULLET WE'VE REALIZED.

OVER TIME THIS PROGRAM GIVES KIDS THE SKILLS THEY NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL.

THESE ELEMENTS ARE DIFFERENT FROM A LOT OF OTHER PROGRAMS.

NOT TO DIMINISH OTHERS BUT JUST DIFFERENT.

ALWAYS STRUCK ME, IT'S CONTINUUM.

KINDERGARTEN ALL THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL AND EVEN BEYOND.

HOW DO YOU MANAGE THAT?

TO KEEP THEM WITHIN THIS CONTINUUM, ENGAGED FOR THIS PERIOD OF TIME?

SUCH A GOOD QUESTION.

WHAT APPEALS TO FIVE OR SIX-YEAR-OLD DOESN'T APPEAL TO 14-YEAR-OLD.

ONE OF THE THINGS OUR PROGRAMS DO IS GROW SLOWLY.

KIDS STAY YEAR AFTER YEAR.

RIGHT NOW IT'S AVERAGE OF SIX YEARS BUT IT'S INCREASING AS PROGRAMS GET OLDER.

START WITH TRADITIONAL.

KIDS THINK THIS IS CAMP.

SHOW UP, LEARN TO SWIM, FIELD TRIPS WITH FRIENDS, HAVE FUN.

BUT ALSO GO AHEAD TWO TO THREE EVERY SUMMER IN READING AND MATH.

BY THE TIME THEY'RE TEENAGERS, PUTTING TOGETHER RESUMES, GOING ON COLLEGE TRIPS TO VISIT CAMPUSES AND FIGURE OUT WHAT THAT LIFE LOOKS LIKE, DOING MOCK JOB INTERVIEWS.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF PROGRAMS FOR DIFFERENT AGE GROUPS.

WE TALKED ABOUT THIS NOTION OF COMBATTING INCOME INEQUALITY.

LOOK AT PROGRAM LIKE THIS AND OTHER THINGS TAKING PLACE, I GUESS THE QUESTION A LOT OF PEOPLE ASK, WE TALK ABOUT A LOT, ARE WE DOING ANYTHING ABOUT THAT.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

BIG PICTURE, I HAVE TO BE HONEST, I DON'T THINK WE'RE DOING NEARLY ENOUGH.

SYSTEMICALLY AS YOU SAY, WE'RE IN A PLACE WHERE THE INEQUITY SITUATION IN MY OPINION IS INTOLERABLE.

AS A COUNTRY I DON'T THINK WE CAN ACCEPT IT.

SMALL PICTURE, WE'RE DOING PRETTY WELL.

PROGRAMS EVERY SINGLE DAY, HORIZONS IS ONE OF THEM AND THERE ARE OTHERS WORKING TO ADDRESS THIS.

IN LIVES OF INDIVIDUAL CHILDREN WE'RE MAKING GREAT CHANGE.

BIG PICTURE JACK, WE'VE GOT TO DO SO MUCH MORE.

WE CANNOT HAVE COMMUNITIES WITH ABUNDANT RESOURCES, GREAT SCHOOLS, WONDERFUL FOOD, TRANSPORTATION ET CETERA, THEN PLACES WITH NONE OF THOSE THINGS AND EXPECT SOMEHOW KIDS ALREADY BEHIND AT TWO TO BE ABLE TO FIGURE IT OUT AND COMPENSATE FOR ALL OF THAT BY THE TIME IN SCHOOL AT FIVE OR SUPPOSED TO BE IN HIGH SCHOOL.

YOU KNOW, IT'S NOT RIGHT.

WHAT DO YOU SAY TO FOLKS OUT THERE, USING YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE.

20 YEARS AGO, SMALL SCHOOL, MOM THERE AS TEACHER AND WHAT HORIZONS AS BECOME SINCE THEN.

SOMEBODY IS WHO SAYS I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU'RE SAYING AND IT'S PROBLEM BUT WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT?

ANSWER IS I BELIEVE TO FOCUS LOCALLY.

EVERY COMMUNITY HAS OPPORTUNITIES.

WHETHER IT'S HORIZONS OR ANOTHER PROGRAM, YOU CAN WORK TO CHANGE THE LIVES OF INDIVIDUAL KIDS.

AND YOU AND I KNOW AS PARENTS, GET OUR KIDS INVOLVED.

OUR DAUGHTER AND SON WORKED IN THE PROGRAM.

THOSE EXPERIENCES CHANGED THEIR LIVES AND THEY'RE MEETING YOUNG KIDS INSPIRING THEM AND GOING TO CHANGE THE WORLD.

FOCUS ONLY ON THE BIG PICTURE YOU BECOME DISCOURAGED.

BUT IF YOU BECOME A MENTOR OR GET INVOLVED IN PROGRAM AND FIND WAYS TO GET RESOURCES TO PROGRAMS LIKE OURS, OPENING NEW SCHOOL OR FINDING A FUNDER, YOU'RE CHANGING INDIVIDUAL LIVES AND END OF THE DAY THAT'S GOING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

THESE KIDS ARE GOING TO GROW UP.

THEN WE'RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO CHANGE THE SYSTEM.

YOUR DAUGHTER ALLISON WILLIAMS, MARVELOUS ACTOR, 'GIRLS,' RUNS FOR SO LONG.

I REMEMBER SEEING HER IN COLLEGE IMPROV.

HOW WELL SHE DID.

TELL ME ABOUT HER INVOLVEMENT IN THE PROGRAM.

SHE'S AMBASSADOR FOR HORIZONS AND ALWAYS BEEN INTERESTED IN THEATER AND DRAMA AND FILM BUT ALSO LOVES KIDS.

NOT ONLY HELPED US RAISE A BUNCH OF MONEY THROUGH TEN DAYS OF GIVING, BUT GOES OUT AND SPENDS TIME WITH THE CHILDREN.

I THINK THAT'S THE BEST PART FOR HER.

SHE GETS SUCH A KICK OUT OF BEING WITH THESE KIDS.

THEY INSPIRE HER AND SHE LOVES IT.

DANCES WITH THEM, THEY CRACK HER UP.

HAVE A LOT OF FUN.

HORIZONS FROM SMALL START TO WHERE IT IS NOW ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND GROWING GIVES US SOME HOPE.

REALIZING YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE, DO SOMETHING.

HORIZONS HAS FOR 20 YEARS AND I KNOW IT WILL CONTINUE TO DO THAT.

JANE, ALWAYS NICE TO SEE YOU, THANK YOU FOR SHARING WHAT IS GOING ON.

THANK YOU JACK, IT'S A PRIVILEGE.

REMINDER, IF YOU WANT TO LEARN MORE AND SEE HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED, VISIT METROFOCUS.ORG FOR LINKS AND INFORMATION.

> ONE OF OUR NATION'S MOST INFLUENTIAL AND ICONIC PUBLICATIONS IS MARKING 50 YEARS IN PRINT.

'NEW YORK' MAGAZINE HAS PRIDED ITSELF ON FEARLESS, OFTEN FUNNY AND UNAPOLOGETIC WRITING.

FROM FOOD, FASHION AND CULTURAL TRENDS TO HARD-HITTING FEATURE PIECES THAT HELD THOSE IN POWER INTO ACCOUNT, PUBLICATION HAS HELD A SPECIAL PLACE ON OUR NEWS STANDS FOR DECADES.

NEW BOOK FROM THE EDITOR, HIGH BROW, LOW BROW, BRILLIANT DESPICABLE.

50 YEARS OF NEW YORK.

WELCOME ADAM MOSS TO OUR PROGRAM.

NICE TO BE HERE.

I'VE BEEN A FAN OF THE MAGAZINE AS LONG AS I CAN REMEMBER.

BUT I'M ALWAYS FASCINATED BY HOW THINGS GET STARTED.

50 YEARS NOW, HOW DID 'NEW YORK' MAGAZINE GET STARTED?

USED TO BE A NEWSPAPER IN NEW YORK CALLED THE 'NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE' WITH A SUNDAY MAGAZINE CALLED 'NEW YORK' EDITED BY -- WITH FANTASTIC ART DIRECTOR AND PAPER TANKED.

CLAY AND MILTON RAISED THE MONEY TO BUY THE NAME 'NEW YORK' AND SPIN IT OFF AS ITS OWN MAGAZINE WITH ITS OWN WRITERS.

TOM WOLFE CAME WITH CLAY AND MILTON TO NEW YORK AND STARTED RADICAL CHIC, ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS ARTICLES ABOUT THE BLACK PANTHERS AND LEONARD BERNSTEIN.

CONTENT IS CRITICAL, PACKAGING IS IMPORTANT.

WE'RE A VISUAL CULTURE.

HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT THE PROCESS OF DECIDING ON THE -- WHAT THE COVER IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE?

THERE'S A LOT OF FACTORS THAT GO INTO A COVER AND THEY'VE CHANGED A LOT OVER THE 50 YEAR HISTORY OF THE MAGAZINE.

FOR US NOW IN THIS ERA, FIRST IT HAS TO BE IMPORTANT STORY OR WHAT WE THINK IS THE STORY THAT COULD HAVE THE MOST IMPACT.

THEN IT HAS TO LEND ITSELF TO VISUAL REPRESENTATION AND EXPRESSION, POSTER-LIKE QUALITY WE AIM FOR.

DON'T ALWAYS GET THERE.

BUT OUR BEST COVERS ARE ONES THAT PEOPLE WANT TO SAVE OR THESE DAYS SHARE ON SOCIAL MEDIA.

HUGELY IMPORTANT.

THAT'S WHAT WE STRIVE FOR.

IT'S A TIME WHEN PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS TALKING ABOUT DOOM AND GLOOM FOR THE MAGAZINE INDUSTRY.

YEP.

AND YET 'NEW YORK' HAS MANAGED TO STAY RELEVANT, INCLUSIVE, COMPELLING FOR 50 YEARS.

BIG QUESTION IS, I GUESS THIS IS GOING TO REQUIRE YOU TO BE A LITTLE SELF-LAUDATORY FOR THE MAGAZINE.

BUT BIG QUESTION IS, HOW DO YOU DO THAT?

STAY RELEVANT FOR 50 YEARS, ESPECIALLY IN THIS ERA.

I THINK THE MAIN THING WE'RE DOING IS BUILDING ON THE ORIGINAL CLAY FELL KERR IDEA.

ORIGINAL IDEA WAS NEW YORK WAS NOT JUST A PLACE, A GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION, BUT ALSO AN IDEA.

NEW YORK IS -- HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL EXPORTING ITS OWN IDEA OF ITSELF.

MOST OF THE CITIES IN AMERICA AND ALL OVER THE WORLD RESEMBLE NEW YORK IN CRUCIAL WAYS.

NEW YORK IS NOT JUST A PLACE REALLY BUT A GLOBAL POINT OF VIEW.

AND THAT POINT OF VIEW RIGHT NOW IS FASCINATING BECAUSE THE CITY POINT OF VIEW IS IN CONTEST WITH THE RURAL POINT OF VIEW IN SOME WAYS FOR THE SOUL OF AMERICA ITSELF.

VERY EXCITING, INTERESTING, YOU KNOW SOMETIMES TERRIFYING PLATFORM.

IT'S WHAT NEW YORK IS.

WE TALKED ABOUT, YOU LOOK AT SOCIAL ISSUES, CULTURAL ISSUES, POLITICAL ISSUES, PERSONALITIES.

WHICH GETS US AROUND TO CURRENT PRESIDENT.

IN 'NEW YORK' MAGAZINE, LOOKED AT DONALD TRUMP IN A LOT OF WAYS FOR DECADES NOW.

YES.

30 YEARS OR MORE, WHAT WAS ATTRACTIVE ABOUT HIM THEN TO PUT HIM IN FOREFRONT?

NEW YORK IS A PLACE WHERE OUTSIZED CHARACTERS ROAM.

AND DONALD TRUMP WAS ONE OF THEM.

HE MADE HIMSELF THAT.

HE WAS VERY EFFECTIVE IN CATAPULTING HIMSELF TO ATTENTION VERY EARLY.

HE'S A SHAMELESS ENTERTAINER.

HE ALWAYS HAS BEEN.

AND --

BY THE WAY, WHATEVER YOU THINK OF DONALD TRUMP, SUPPORTER OR NOT, YOU HAVE TO ADMIRE HIS ABILITY TO CREATE A PERSONA.

ABSOLUTELY.

ALTHOUGH IT'S HARD TO KNOW WHETHER IT'S PERSONA OR ACTUALLY HIM.

BUT YES, HE'S A SORT OF MAGNIFICENTLY EFFECTIVE PUBLIC PERSONALITY.

HE ALWAYS HAS BEEN.

SO AT BEGINNING, REAL ESTATE DEVELOPER, BRAZEN, WOULD SAY ANYTHING, WOULD INVOLVE HIS OWN FAMILY LIFE, HIS MARRIAGE, HIS AFFAIRS, DIVORCE, OVER AND OVER AGAIN THIS PATTERN.

PUT HIMSELF IN THE FOREFRONT OF NEW YORK LIVE AND MAGAZINE HAD A LOT OF FUN WITH HIM.

NEVER, OF COURSE, TOOK HIM SERIOUSLY.

REALLY IT'S DURING THE LAST FIVE OR EIGHT YEARS THAT THE MAGAZINE HAS HAD TO GRAPPLE WITH TRUMP HIMSELF AND ALSO WITH ITS OWN RELATIONSHIP TO TRUMP BECAUSE WE ARE DEFINITELY IMPLICATED ALONG WITH MOST NEW YORK MEDIA IN HELPING TO CREATE HIM.

AS YOU LOOK BACK AND THROUGH THE 50 YEARS, AND NOW LOOK FORWARD TO THE NEXT 50 YEARS, DO YOU SEE ANY SIGNIFICANT CHANGES ON THE HORIZON FOR 'NEW YORK' MAGAZINE AND HOW IT APPROACHES WHAT ITS MISSION IS HERE AND THERE?

I THINK ITS MISSION WILL STAY THE SAME, THAT'S NEVER VARIED IN HIS 50 YEARS.

FORMS OF STORYTELLING CHANGE, NOW EXPRESSING IN VIDEO, MULTIMEDIA, SOCIAL MEDIA, THE PLATFORM WHERE YOU TELL YOUR STORY CHANGES, THE MISSION DOESN'T.

AND I KNOW 'NEW YORK' MAGAZINE HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN STAYING AHEAD OF THAT.

ONE OF THE PROBLEMS FOR PEOPLE IN THE MAGAZINE INDUSTRY WAS THEY WERE LACKING BEHIND IT, DIGITAL, JUST PUT THE STORIES BACK UP ON DIGITAL.

RIGHT.

WE SAW IT AS OPPORTUNITY.

OUR ATTITUDE ABOUT ALL THIS STUFF IS IT'S NOT A PROBLEM, IT'S AN OPPORTUNITY.

AND IT'S JUST MORE WAYS TO TELL STORIES.

FOR THOSE OF US WHO MAKE THE MAGAZINE, IT'S EXCITING BECAUSE YOU GET TO LEARN MEDIA ALL THE TIME.

WE'RE ALL LEARNING VIDEO, IT'S TOTALLY EXCITING, I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE DOING BUT FIGURING IT OUT.

FOR 50 YEARS, GREAT STORYTELLING AND COMPELLING, CAPTURING THE IDEA AND IDEAL OF NEW YORK AND WE APPRECIATE YOU SPENDING TIME WITH US.

LOOK FORWARD TO THE NEXT 50 YEARS OF 'NEW YORK' MAGAZINE.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

YOU DO WELL.
