September 7, 2017: TONIGHT ON METROFOCUS

Mayor Bill de Blasio squared off once again against City Hall hopeful Sal Albanese.  Did Albanese manage to land any punches?  And… like him or not…is there really a serious chance that Mayor de Blasio will not win his bid for re-election?  We’ll have analysis from New York Times City Hall reporter J. David Goodman. As hurricanes Irma and Harvey leave destruction in their wake, a question remains that each of us should have asked ourselves after Superstorm Sandy hit our region:  Am I prepared for a natural disaster?  We have important information that you and your family don’t want to miss. And because once is just not enough, the incomparable Chita Rivera and Tommy Tune are back before they take their “Chita and Tune” show on the road. A true treasure of New York looks great for 100: the U.J.A. Federation is still going strong after a century of helping New Yorkers.  We’ll take a  look at their great work.

> TONIGHT ON 'METROFOCUS,' MAYOR BILL de BLASIO SCARED OFF AGAINST SAL ALBANESE.

LIKE HIM OR NOT, IS THERE REALLY A SERIOUS CHANGE THAT THE MAYOR WILL NOT WIN HIS BID FOR RE-ELECTION.

AS IRMA AND HARVEY LEAVE DESTRUCTION, A QUESTION REMAINS THAT EACH OF US SHOULD HAVE ASKED OURSELVES AFTER SANDY.

AM I PREPARED FOR A NATURAL DISASTER?

WE HAVE INFORMATION THAT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY DON'T WANT TO MISS.

BECAUSE ONCE IS JUST NOT ENOUGH, THE CHEETAH RIVERA IS BACK.

PLUS, A TRUE TREASURER OF NEW YORK.

WHAT'S GREAT FOR 100, THE UJA FEDERATION IS STILL GOING STRONG AFTER A CENTURY OF HELPING NEW YORKERS.

WE WILL LOOK AT ITS GREAT WORK AS 'METROFOCUS' STARTS RIGHT NOW.

THIS IS 'METROFOCUS' WITH JACK FORD AND JENNA FLANAGAN.

FUNDING FOR THIS PROGRAM WAS PROVIDED BY --

> GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO 'METROFOCUS.'

THANKS FOR JOINING US.

FOR THE SECOND AND FINAL TIME, THE TWO LEADING DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES FOR NEW YORK CITY MAYOR TOOK CENTER STAGE AHEAD OF NEXT WEEK'S PRIMARIES.

THE MAYOR AND HIS CHALLENGER CLASHED ON A NUMBER OF ISSUES DURING WEDNESDAY NIGHT'S DEBATE HERE IN MANHATTAN, INCLUDING HOMELESSNESS AND CRIME.

THE CONVERSATION GOT PARTICULARLY HEATED WHEN THE TWO CANDIDATES, THE ONLY DEMOCRATS IN THE CROWDED FIELD TO QUALIFY FOR THE DEBATE, TURNED TO PRESIDENT TRUMP.

TAKE A LISTEN.

I FIND DONALD TRUMP'S POLICIES ABHORRENT.

I WILL STAND UP TO HIM AS AGGRESSIVELY AS YOU WILL.

BUT I ALSO REALIZE THAT I'VE GOT TO DEAL WITH HUD, I'VE GOT TO DEAL WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION.

I DON'T WANT TO GET INTO A PERSONAL GRUDGE MATCH WITH HIM, PROTESTING IN FRONT OF HIS BUILDING.

FOR CLARIFICATION, YOU ARE SAYING THE MAYOR OF NEW YORK CITY STANDING UP AND PROTESTING IS A BAD IDEA?

YOU ARE NOT A CHEERLEADER.

YOU ARE THE MAYOR OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK.

FOR REACTION AND WHAT THE DEBATE COULD MEAN FOR THE PRIMARY, WE'RE JOINED BY 'NEW YORK TIMES' CITY HALL REPORTER JAY DAVID GOODMAN.

WELCOME TO THE PROGRAM.

THANKS FOR HAVING ME.

THAT WAS A HEATED EXCHANGE.

TELL US, WHAT DO YOU THINK WERE THE MAIN HEADLINES?

WHAT WERE YOUR TAKEAWAYS?

THAT WAS ONE OF THE MORE INTERESTING MOMENTS OF THE DEBATE THAT KIND OF SAILED ALONG FOR THE MAYOR.

IT DIDN'T -- THERE WAS SOME DINGS THAT SAL GOT ON HIM IN TERMS OF SOME CULTURAL STUFF WITH THE RED SOX, WITH THE COLUMBUS STATUE.

IN GENERAL, THE MAYOR IS IN A VERY STRONG POSITION HEADING INTO THE PRIMARY.

SAL, EVEN IF HE MIGHT HAVE WON SOME PEOPLE OVER LAST NIGHT, A LITTLE MORE POLISHED THAN THE FIRST DEBATE, I DON'T THINK HE DID ENOUGH TO OVERCOME TREMENDOUS HURDLES HE HAS.

WE WILL TALK ABOUT IT.

TALK ABOUT THE DINGS.

THEY CAME FROM THE REPORTERS, FROM THE PANELISTS RATHER THAN FROM SAL.

FIRST WAS THE ISSUE OF PAY TO PLAY.

THEY STUCK ON THAT.

EVEN THOUGH HE WASN'T INDICTED FOR PAY TO PLAY, THAT THE PROSECUTOR SAID THAT HE AND HIS PEOPLE VIOLATED THE INTENT OF THE LAW, SPIRIT OF THE LAW.

ALSO, ON THE COLUMBUS STATUE, WHERE HE REFUSED TO SAY WHERE HE STOOD ON IT.

IT HAD THE FEEL OF A NEWS CONFERENCE.

FOR PEOPLE THAT HAVE COVERED THE MAYOR, IT WAS FAMILIAR.

I THINK FOR A LOT OF VOTERS, THE WHOLE PAY TO PLAY AND WHETHER THE MAYOR HAS DONE FAVORS IS BAKED INTO THE EQUATION.

I DON'T THINK HE SUFFERED EVEN THOUGH HE WAS A LITTLE BACK ON HIS FEET.

SAL HAD A GOOD LINE ABOUT I THINK NOT BEING INDICTED IS A LOW BAR FOR BECOMING MAYOR.

THAT'S A GOOD POINT.

AT THE END OF THE DAY, THE MAYOR'S PEOPLE WEREN'T INDICTED.

NOTHING HAS HAPPENED.

THEY HAVE MOVED ALONG.

I THINK VOTERS HAVE BAKED THAT INTO THEIR FEELINGS.

YOU DON'T THINK THIS WILL MOVE THE NEEDLE?

IT MIGHT.

WHEN I WAS OUT WITH SAL FOR A PROFILE FOR THIS RACE A COUPLE WEEKS AGO, THE COLUMBUS STATUE THING DID COME UP.

NOT BROUGHT UP BY SAL.

PEOPLE ON THE STREET.

THAT ISSUE HAD A LITTLE RESONANCE.

I THINK WHEN THE MAYOR VACILLATED OR DIDN'T WANT TO SAY WHAT HIS PERSONAL OPINION WAS ON THAT, I THINK THAT MIGHT HAVE MADE SOME PEOPLE FEEL LIKE HE IS A POLISHED POLITICIAN, HE'S NOT AS AUTHENTIC AS SAL.

WE'RE COMING INTO THE HOME STRETCH, THE LAST PUBLIC POLL WAS IN JULY.

THE MAYOR WAS 50% IF I REMEMBER RIGHT.

SAL WAS 4%. WE'RE TALKING ABOUT A PRETTY WIDE MARGIN.

WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF SAL?

I COVERED HIS FIRST MAYORAL CAMPAIGN.

DOES HE THINK HE CAN WIN?

I THINK HE THOUGHT -- A LOT OF PEOPLE THOUGHT WHEN THE MAYOR WAS UNDER INVESTIGATION THAT HE WAS QUITE VULNERABLE.

FOR A CITY WHERE CRIME IS NEAR OR AT RECORD LOWS AND JOBS ARE AT RECORD HIGHS, THE CITY -- THE MAYOR IS NOT AS POPULAR AS YOU MIGHT EXPECT.

SAL WANTED TO JUMP -- IF NO ONE ELSE WAS GOING TO JUMP IN, HE WOULD DO IT.

HE WAS IN A CROWDED FIELD LAST TIME.

HE CAME IN EIGHTH OF NINE.

HE IS ALONE THIS TIME.

HE HAS HIS SHOT TO GO AFTER A MAYOR HE HASN'T LIKED.

HE ATTACKED HIM BEFORE HE WAS RUNNING THIS TIME AROUND.

SAL WAS ATTACKING WHAT THE MAYOR WAS DOING.

AS WE LOOK FORWARD TO NOVEMBER, ASSUMING -- IF THE MAYOR WINS THE PRIMARY IN SEPTEMBER NEXT WEEK, DOES NICOLE, THE LIKELY REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE, DOES SHE HAVE A CHANCE?

I THINK THE BAR MIGHT BE HIGHER FOR HER THAN EVEN FOR SAL, BECAUSE THE REGISTRATION ADVANTAGE IS SO STARK.

WE'RE IN AN ERA WHERE DEMOCRATS ARE NOT LIKELY TO CROSS OVER TO VOTE FOR A REPUBLICAN BECAUSE YOU HAVE DONALD TRUMP IN THE WHITE HOUSE.

THE BRAND OF THE REPUBLICANS -- YOU SAW IT IN A DEBATE FOR CITY COUNSEL.

WE'RE TALKING ABOUT TRUMP REPUBLICANS.

DEMOCRATS ARE TRYING TO PAINT THAT PARTY WITH THAT LABEL.

SHE HAS TO SADDLE WITH THAT.

IT'S HARD TO OVERCOME.

WE HAVE 45 SECONDS.

SPEAKING OF TRUMP, A LOT WAS MADE IN THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS ABOUT THE FACT TRUMP CUT A DEAL WITH SCHUMER TO RAISE THE DEBT CEILING FOR THREE MONTHS.

WAS THAT JUST ANOTHER THING THAT TRUMP DID TO GET COVERAGE THAT WILL BE FORGOTTEN HE DOES ANOTHER THING?

WAS IT SIGNIFICANT?

I THINK IT WAS AN OPENING.

DEMOCRATS WANTED TO SEE THIS AS SOME KIND OF CHANGE.

AT THE END OF THE DAY, HE DISAPPOINTED EVERYBODY.

PEOPLE ON THE FAR RIGHT, CENTER RIGHT, NOW DEMOCRATS WHO PUT LONG-TERM HOPE ON THIS ARE GOING TO BE DISAPPOINTED.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

> FOR THOSE OF YOU WATCHING AT HOME, FULL COVERAGE OF NEXT WEEK'S PRIMARY.

CHECK BACK ON DECISION 2017.

> ALL EYES ARE GLUED ON HURRICANE IRMA AS SHE BARRELS HER WAY NORTH.

THE DESTRUCTION SHE'S LEFT IN HER WAKE.

SEVERE STRENGTH AND SPEED, SHE TORE APART THE CARIBBEAN.

THE QUESTION, AS HURRICANE SEASON MOVES AHEAD, WHAT TO DO AND WHAT WHAT NOT TO DO.

SINCE SANDY, WE KNOW TOO WELL THE CATASTROPHIC TOLL A STORM LIKE IRMA CAN BRING.

SOME VICTIMS HAVE YET TO GO HOME.

FOR ADVICE AND ANSWERS, WE TURN TO GENERAL HONORAY.

HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR COORDINATING MILITARY RELIEF EFFORTS DURING KATRINA.

HE JOINS US NOW.

THANK YOU FOR JOINING US ON 'METROFOCUS' AND FOR YOUR SERVICE.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT WE CAN EXPECT FROM HURRICANE IRMA.

A LOT OF DEVASTATION.

IF IT IS TO COME LANDFALL ON THE MAINLAND OF FLORIDA, ETCH SEEDING 145 MILE AN HOUR WINDS, SOME OF THE PREDICTIONS ARE IT COULD PUT 12 TO 14-FOOT SURGE IN AND AROUND MIAMI, IT COULD BE DEVASTATING.

OVER KEY WEST.

MIAMI IS 11-FOOT ELEVATION.

IT COULD TOP AND BRING WATER INTO MOST OF THE CITY OF MIAMI.

IT COULD BASICALLY FLOOD THE BACK PART OF FLORIDA WITH SURGE WATER.

WHEN THE 145 MILE WIND, IT WILL TAKE DOWN OR COULD TAKE OFF MANY OF THE ROOFS AND DESTROY MANY BUILDINGS.

IN AND AROUND THE MIAMI AREA, WHEREVER IT HIT LANDFALL AND TO THE RIGHT FRONT OF THE STORM.

IT IS NOT LOOKING GOOD.

WE ARE HOPING THAT SOMETHING -- SOME MIRACLE WOULD HAPPEN, IT WILL GO ANOTHER DIRECTION.

RIGHT NOW, IT'S HEADED DIRECTLY FOR MIAMI.

YOU WERE BOOTS ON THE GROUND FOR ONE OF OUR WORST NATURAL DISASTERS.

WHAT ADVISE DO YOU HAVE FOR PEOPLE IN IRMA'S PATHWAY?

YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT YESTERDAY.

I DON'T MEAN TO BE FLIPPANT, BUT IT'S HARD TO DO A BIG EVACUATION.

FLORIDA, THE WAY THE STATE IS DESIGNED, KIND OF LIKE ONE BIG PENINSULA OUT THERE.

YOU HAVE 10 MILLION PEOPLE.

HOPEFULLY, EVERYBODY WILL GET OUT SAFE.

THE ROADS ARE ALL FULL RIGHT NOW.

IF YOU HAVEN'T LEFT, IT'S NOT TOO LATE.

YOU STILL GOT TIME TO LEAVE AND GET OUT.

THOSE ROADS WILL CLEAR UP HOPEFULLY.

IT'S GOING TO TAKE TIME.

BE PATIENT.

GET OUT NOW.

IF YOUR LOCAL OFFICIALS ADVISED YOU.

IF YOU CAN SEE WATER FROM YOUR HOME AND YOU LIVE ALONG THE COAST, YOU NEED TO LEAVE.

WHAT ABOUT THOSE THAT CHOSE TO STAY BEHIND?

THERE ARE MANY WHO HAVE.

DO YOU HAVE ADVICE FOR THEM?

YEAH.

FORM TEAMS.

FIGURE OUT WHO IS TO YOUR LEFT AND TO YOUR RIGHT.

TEAM UP SO YOU CAN LOOK OUT FOR ONE ANOTHER.

FLORIDA CULTURALLY, IT'S A THING DOWN THERE WHERE PEOPLE WON'T EVACUATE IF THE STORM IS NOT A HURRICANE 3 OR HIGHER.

THERE'S A RIDING OUT MENTALITY.

TRUTH BE KNOWN, ON THE MAINLAND, FLORIDA, IT'S HARD TO GET OVER 50% EVACUATION.

THAT'S WHAT HISTORY SHOWS US.

THERE WILL BE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING TO RIDE IT OUT.

WE JUST HOPE THAT THEY LOOK OUT FOR ONE ANOTHER AND THAT THEY FOLLOW ALL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AND HAVE THAT THREE TO FIVE DAY SUPPLY OF FOOD AND WATER.

THEY ARE GOING TO BE ON THEIR OWN FOR THAT PERIOD OF TIME IF THE PREDICTIONS COME TRUE THAT IT COULD BE SEVERE FLOODING.

IF THE GRID GOES DOWN, THAT'S GOING TO BE A GAME CHANGER.

IN THE MIDST OF THE HIGH WIND AND RAIN, IT'S GOING TO BE HARD FOR FIRST RESPONDERS TO GET TO YOU, IF THEY GET TO YOU IN TIME.

THAT'S THE RISK PEOPLE TAKE WHEN THEY SHELTER IN PLACE INSIDE THE DANGEROUS PART OF THE LANDFALL ON THIS STORM.

HERE IN THE NORTHEAST, WE'RE NOT AS ACQUAINTED WITH HURRICANES THE WAY THEY ARE IN FLORIDA.

WE ARE HEADING INTO HURRICANE SEASON.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR PEOPLE IN PREPARATION?

GENERGENERATORS?

GET MENTALLY PREPARED.

WE SAW WHAT HAPPENED DOWN IN TEXAS WITH HARVEY.

DETERMINED THE LOCATION YOU HAVE TO GO TO, WHAT WOULD BE EVACUATION ROUTE AND HAVE A COLLECTION OF ALL YOUR IMPORTANT PAPERS AND YOUR THREE TO FIVE DAY SUPPLY OF FOOD AND WATER.

IF YOU HAVE TO EVACUATE, YOU MAY HAVE TO TAKE IT WITH YOU.

KEEP YOUR CAR -- IF YOU OWN A CAR, KEEP IT AT LEAST THREE-QUARTER FULL OF GAS.

YOU WILL BE PREPARED TO LEAVE AT ANY GIVEN TIME.

WITH HURRICANES THAT THEY ARE, WE GET GREAT WARNING.

IN THIS CASE, TECHNOLOGY PROVIDES US DAYS TO PREPARE.

BUT THE BIGGEST THING IS GETTING MENTALLY PREPARED THAT IF YOU ARE TO LEAVE, YOU GOT A PLAN AND YOU GOT A GO KIT AND IF YOU HAVE ANIMALS OR IF YOU HAVE SOMEONE IN YOUR FAMILY THAT REQUIRES MEDICAL -- SPECIAL MEDICAL TREATMENT, THAT YOU GET THEM OUT EARLY.

TAKE ME BACK A LITTLE BIT TO KATRINA, WHICH YOU KNOW MORE THAN ANYONE WAS A REAL LANDMARK EVENT HERE IN THE U.S.

WHAT WERE SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU SAW IN THAT MOMENT THAT YOU THINK WE SHOULD BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO REPEAT, THAT WERE AVOIDABLE?

WHAT WON'T YOU FORGET?

ABOUT THE 1800 PEOPLE THAT DIED DURING KATRINA.

MOST OF THEM, WHEN WE FOUND THEM, THEY WERE ELDERLY PEOPLE.

MANY OF THEM WERE DISABLED.

MOST OF THEM WERE POOR.

THEY WERE ALONE.

WE FOUND THEM ON THE SECONDARY SEARCH WHEN WE WENT INSIDE THE HOME AND THEY WERE THERE.

THE WATER IN KATRINA WAS ABOUT 80% OF THE CITY WAS FLOODED.

MUCH OF THE CITY WAS UNDER EIGHT TO TEN FOOT OF WATER.

A LOT OF THEM DIED ALONE AT HOME.

I THINK THE LESSON THERE, I TELL PEOPLE IS, IF WE EVACUATE, MAKE SURE YOU DON'T LEAVE YOUR NEIGHBOR.

MANY OF THEM HAVE MOBILITY ISSUES.

IN THAT CASE, WE LOST A LOT OF THEM BECAUSE THEY WERE HOME ALONE.

GENERAL, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.

WE APPRECIATE IT.

GOOD LUCK UP THERE.

HOPE THE STORM DON'T MAKE ITS WAY UP TO NEW YORK.

WE DO, TOO.

THANK YOU.

> CHEETAH AND TOMMY ARE TWO LIVING LEGENDS.

NOW THEY'RE JOINING FORCES AND TAKING THEIR SHOW ON THE ROAD ACROSS AMERICA.

THIS UNPRECEDENTED CONCERT TOUR WILL KICK OFF IN OUR AREA AT CANE UNIVERSITY IN NEW JERSEY FOR TWO SHOWS ON SEPTEMBER 16th AND 17th.

I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO TALK WITH CHEETAH AND TOMMY.

YESTERDAY, WE SHOWED YOU THE FIRST PART OF THE INTERVIEW.

HERE NOW IS THE SECOND PART OF MY CONVERSATION WITH THE INCOMPARABLE CHEETAH AND TOMMY.

AROUND 'METROFOCUS' IT SEEMS LIKE AMONG ALL OF US, IT'S OUR FAVORITE MUSICAL WHICH YOU DIRECTED.

THERE'S AN INTERESTING STORY.

YOU CAME UP WITH THIS UNIQUE OUTSIDE OF THE BOX VISION FOR 'NINE.'

FOR WHICH YOU HAD TO FIGHT.

TALK ABOUT THAT VISION.

THERE WAS REALLY NECESSITY AT THAT POINT IN NEW YORK.

THE BEST CHARACTER ACTORS, MEN, WERE GOING TO HOLLYWOOD.

THEY HAD FAMILIES TO RAISE.

THEY COULD GET ON A SITCOM.

THEY COULD GET IN THE MOVIES.

CHARACTER ACTORS WERE HARD TO FIND.

THE RIGHT AGE, OLDER.

I HAD TO CAST A LOT OF OLDER MEN AS WE WERE AUDITIONING.

I COULDN'T FIND ANY.

THEY HAD FLED TO THE COAST.

I WAS SEEING ALL THESE INCREDIBLY TALENTED WOMEN OF ALL DIFFERENT SHAPES AND SIZES AND ENTITIES AND COLORS.

I WENT, THIS IS SO INTERESTING.

THEY'RE SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING THAN THE MEN COMING IN FOR THESE ROLES.

SO IT HIT ME, THE LEAD, IS OBSESSED WITH WOMEN.

WHY NOT -- IT'S NOT A MOVIE.

LET'S BRING IT DOWN AND MAKE IT BELONG ON A STAGE.

I SAY HE INHABITS HIS WHOLE WORLD, HIS WHOLE IMAGINARY WORLD WITH WOMEN.

THAT'S HOW IT CAME ABOUT.

I JUST FINISHED DIRECTING MY FIRST SHOW IN NEW YORK, WHICH WAS CALLED 'FLUB.'

IT WAS A CAST OF ALL WOMEN.

IT WAS WOMEN DRESSED AS MEN.

OUR PRODUCERS THOUGHT THAT I WAS STILL STUCK IN THAT SHOW.

SHOWS LEAK -- YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL.

IF YOU RUN A BUNCH OF SHOWS TOGETHER THAT YOU DON'T --

I LOVE LEAKING.

YOU DON'T LEAK INTO THE NEXT SHOW.

YOU GOTTA COME UP WITH A NEW VOCABULARY, CHOREOGRAPHY, TO MAKE THE SHOW WORK.

I'M NOT DRESSING THEM UP AS MEN TO PLAY THE MEN'S PART.

THEY'RE POWERFUL WOMEN.

LET THEM BE THEMSELVES.

THEN OUR COMPOSER SAID, THE AUDIENCE WILL HATE HEARING WOMEN SING ALL NIGHT.

I WENT, OH, CONTRAIR.

YOU HEARD THESE VOICES, THIS INCREDIBLE ENSEMBLE OF WOMEN I FOUND.

THAT'S HOW IT CAME ABOUT.

YOU SAID TO THEM, LISTEN, THIS IS HOW IT'S GOING TO BE.

IF YOU DON'T WANT IT, YOU DON'T GET ME.

THEY SAID, WE DON'T LIKE THAT IDEA.

I SAID, WELL, I'M GOING TO HAVE DO THIS SHOW THE WAY I KNOW HOW TO DO IT.

THIS IS THE WAY I KNOW HOW DO IT.

SO I UNDERSTAND IT'S YOUR SHOW, YOU WROTE IT AND THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

I LEFT FOR TWO WEEKS.

THEN THEY DECIDED THAT THEY WOULD GIVE ME A CHANCE TO DO IT THE WAY I WANTED DO IT.

THE REST IS HISTORY.

THE WINNER IS 'NINE.'

I REMEMBER WHEN I SAW THAT.

I WAS THRILLED.

I THOUGHT -- I LOVED GUIDO.

HE WAS PUERTO RICAN AND HE COULD SING.

HE WAS FUNNY.

HE HELD THAT STAGE WITH ALL THOSE WOMEN.

AND CAMILLE AND ALL THE WOMEN WERE EXTRAORDINARY.

WHEN IT CAME AROUND WITH -- I DESCRIBE -- I HOPE I'M NOT TAKING UP TOO MUCH TIME.

I DESCRIBE, I WAS IN CALIFORNIA.

I HAD LUNCH WITH THE DIRECTOR.

THEY SAID THAT ANTONIO WAS DOING IT.

I SAID, WELL -- I GOT THIS IMAGE.

I SAW ANTONIO AS THIS MAGNIFICENT BIRD.

THIS HUGE BIRD.

JUST SOARING THROUGH THE SKY.

AND ME SITTING ON TOP OF IT.

IT WAS HIS TRIP AND I WANTED TO GET -- I WANTED TO BE ON HIS TRIP.

BECAUSE I KNEW HE WOULD KNOCK BROADWAY ON ITS SOCKS.

AND I THINK HE DID.

HE DID.

IT WAS WONDERFUL.

THIS IS --

VERY HARD, YES.

SEE WHAT I MEAN?

LET ME ASK YOU ABOUT BROADWAY.

YOU HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR OVER FIVE DECADES.

HOW HAS BROADWAY CHANGED IN THE COURSE OF YOUR --

WHEN I GOT HERE, THERE WERE NO MICROPHONES LIKE THIS THAT YOU WEAR.

YOU JUST CAME DOWN TO THE FOOT LIGHTS AND BELTED OUT YOUR SONG.

SO WE DIDN'T HAVE THAT.

THE LIGHTING WAS MUCH, MUCH LESS.

THE TECHNOLOGY OF BROADWAY HAS JUST -- LISTEN, THE THEATERS WEREN'T AIR CONDITIONED WHEN I STARTED TO WORK.

YOU JUST WENT IN AND DID IT.

I DON'T -- I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND, BECAUSE EVERYTHING IN TEXAS WAS AIR CONDITIONED.

NEW YORK HADN'T BECOME OBSESSED WITH IT YET.

WHAT'S WORSE ABOUT IT?

WHAT'S BETTER, WHAT'S WORSE?

IT'S JUST DIFFERENT.

IT CERTAINLY -- IT'S BIGGER.

IT'S A BIGGER BUSINESS THAN IT EVER WAS WHEN WE ARRIVED.

THESE BLOCKBUSTERS THAT MOVE IN AND STAY FOR 25 YEARS, WE DIDN'T HAVE THAT.

A GOOD RUN FOR TWO OR THREE SEASONS.

YOU WENT OUT ON THE ROAD AND MADE ROOM FOR NEXT NEW SHOW TO COME IN.

THERE WAS MORE TURNOVER.

I DO WORRY ABOUT THE 42nd STREET STORY.

CAN THAT HAPPEN TODAY?

CAN THE YOUNG GIRL COME IN AND BE IN A CHORUS AND THEN COME OUT OF THE CHORUS AND BECOME A STAR?

I WONDER.

♪♪

FINAL QUESTION.

SOMEBODY COMPARED YOU TO HALL OF FAMER ATHLETES.

HALL OF FAMERS HAVE A CAREER OF TEN OR 12 YEARS.

YOU HAVE HAD A MULTI-DECADE CAREER, BOTH OF YOU, STILL GOING STRONG.

NOBODY TOLD US.

TO WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE THAT ENDURANCE AND THAT PERPETUAL SUCCESS?

LOVE.

THAT'S EXACTLY THE WORD -- THAT'S THE VERY WORD.

IT'S THE MAGIC INGREDIENT TO ANYTHING THAT YOU DO ON THE STAGE.

YOU HAVE TO LOVE IT.

YOU WANT TO SHARE IT.

YOU WANT TO LOVE IT SO MUCH THAT YOU WANT TO SHARE IT.

AND THEN IT GROWS INTO TELLING STORIES.

AND HEARING THEIR RESPONSE.

THAT'S WHY THE THEATER IS SO WONDERFUL.

IT'S LIKE PUTTING A PLUG IN AND YOU GET THE REACTION RIGHT AWAY.

I DON'T REALLY LIKE TO LOOK AT MYSELF.

I DON'T REALLY LIKE TO LISTEN TO MYSELF.

I LIKE TO BE MYSELF.

BUT I DON'T -- BECAUSE AT THE MOMENT, I AM DOING WHATEVER IT IS I'M DOING, I FEEL COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM THE MOMENT I LISTEN TO IT.

♪♪

THANK YOU SO MUCH, ONCE AGAIN, FOR JOINING US AND TAKING YOUR TIME TO SPEAK WITH US.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TAKING YOUR SHOW ON THE ROAD.

IT'S GOING TO BE GREAT FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE.

THANK YOU.
