August 2, 2017: “A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM”

“Though she be but little, she is fierce!”   Immortal words by William Shakespeare in the classic “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”  They also best describe Central Park’s Delacorte Theater where this beloved tale is being toldWe’ll take you backstage to this wonderful classic, just don’t mind the raccoons!

TRANSCRIPT

> LORD WOULD FOOL THESE MORTALS BE.

ONE OF SHAKESPEARES MOST HUMAN BEINGS.

NOW NEW YORKERS GET TO SEE TA PLAYED OUT FOR FREE UNDER THE STARS AT SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK OF THE NEW PRODUCTION OF A MIDSUMMER'S NIGHT DREAM.

THE SUMMER STILL TEND UPON MY FAITH.

I DO LOVE THEE.

THEREFORE GO IS ME.

I'LL GIVE YOU FAIRIES TO ATTEND ON THEE AND THEY SHALL FETCH THE JEWELS FROM THE DEEP AND SING WHILE THOU FLOWERS DOES LEAP.

I WILL PURGE THY MORTAL GROSSNESS SO IT SHOWS LIKE A SPIRIT GOES.

THE THEATER IN CENTRAL PARK HAS BEEN TRANSFORMED INTO AN ENCHANTED FOREST FULL OF COMEDY AND LOVE SICK COUPLES.

THE TASK OF DIRECTING THIS MERRY BAND OF LOVERS HAS FALLEN INTO THE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF ITS GROUND BREAKING TONY WORKS.

KNOWN BEST FOR PLAYING TEVIA IN FIDDLER ON THE ROOF LAST YEAR.

HE TAKES ON THE ROLE OF AN AMATEUR ACTOR WHO MAKES A REAL DONKEY OF HIMSELF.

WELCOME TO BOTH YOU HAVE.

THANK YOU.

GREAT TO BE HERE.

THIS IS SUCH AN ICONIC PLAY THAT'S SO WELL KNOWN TO PEOPLE.

WHAT MADE YOU FEEL LIKE THIS IS A REALLY GOOD PLAY TO HAVE NOW.

THE DELACOURT SPACE IS REALLY A SPACE UNLIKE ANY OTHER.

BEING UNDER THAT OPEN SKY WITH 2,000 NEW YORKERS IS PARTICULARLY SPECIAL AND KIND OF LIVE EXPERIENCE.

FOR ME, MIDSUMMER IS THE PERFECT SHOW TO DO THERE.

I'VE BEEN IN 16 BROADWAY SHOWS AND THERE'S NOTHING LIKE THE THEATER.

THE LOVE OF THE PEOPLE.

THE LOVE OF THE PEOPLE WHO COME TO SEE IT AND THE PEOPLE IN THE SHOW AS WELL.

DO YOU FEEL IT IN A DIFFERENT WAY BECAUSE YOU'RE IN A SMALLER, INTIMATE OUT OPEN SPACE?

I THINK SO.

ON NIGHT IT RAINS WE STILL DO THE SHOW AND AUDIENCE MEMBERS COME WITH THEIR PONCHOS.

YOU CAN'T HAVE UMBRELLAS IN THERE.

PEOPLE PUT ON THEIR PONCHOS AND STAY.

I SAW IT IN THE RAIN.

IT WAS INCREDIBLY IMPRESSIVE.

YOU CAN SEE THE RAIN COMING DOWN.

THE AUDIENCES REALLY WANT TO BE THERE.

ABSOLUTELY.

MIDSUMMER IS A PERFECT COMEDY IN NOT ONLY IS IT HILARIOUS, IT HAS DEPTHS OF HUMAN TRUTH.

WANTING SOMETHING THAT WE CAN'T HAVE AND RELENTLESSLY PURSUING SOMETHING THAT WE'RE FOOLISH TO PURSUE.

THOSE THEMES PLAY OUT OVER THE COURSE OF THESE FOUR DIFFERENT STORIES.

YOU CAN SEE THEM REFRACTED AGAINST EACH OVER.

IT'S REALLY SATISFYING TO KNOW YOU'RE NOT ALONE THIS BEING AN IDIOT.

ONE OF THE QUESTIONS IN TERMS OF BEING AN ACTOR ON THIS PARTICULAR STAGE I THOUGHT WAS SO BEAUTIFUL WAS NOT ONLY THE DIVERSITY OF THE CAST BUT ALSO IN TERMS OF THE HISTORY THAT PEOPLE MIGHT HAVE IN TERMS OF THEIR FAMILIARITY WITH ACTING.

THIS IS REALLY LIKE A BROAD GROUP THAT YOU'VE GOT.

DOES THAT MAKE IT A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE?

IT IS A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE.

I THINK THERE'S FOUR GENERAL -- GENERATIONS OF ACTORS IN THE SHOW.

OUR OLDEST IS 93 AND THE YOUNGEST MAY BE 3.

WE LEARN FROM EACH OTHER AND WE RESPECT EACH OTHER.

IT'S GREAT GROUP OF PEOPLE.

TRULY AN HONOR TO BE THERE EVERY SINGLE NIGHT.

I UNDERSTAND WHEN YOU'RE OFFER STAGE YOU'RE UNDER A SPECIAL GAUGE.

WE ARE.

RIGHT UNDERNEATH US IS FAMILY OF RACCOONS LIVING UNDER THE STAGE.

THEY'RE ALL THERE.

THEY COME OUT AT ABOUT 7:15.

IN TIME FOR THE SHOW.

THEY ARE BACKSTAGE WALKING AROUND.

HAVE THEY EVER COME OUT ON STAGE.

APPARENTLY THEY HAVE.

ONE WAS IN THE SHOW THE OTHER DAY.

HE WAS IN ONE OF THE TREES WHEN THE SHOW WAS GOING ON.

IN PAST PRODUCTIONS RACCOONS HAVE COME OUT AND COME OUT THE EDGE OF THE STAGE AND WATCHED THE SCENES A LITTLE BIT.

IT'S TRULY A THEATER FOR ALL NEW YORKERS.

THIS PLAY COMES JUXTAPOSE AGAINST JULIUS CEASAR FOR SOME I'M WONDER IF THAT'S PART OF THE REASON WHY IT WAS CHOSEN.

YOU HAD THESE TWO THAT BALANCED OUT AND MADE SORT OF A MORE, I WANT TO SAY FLUID OR PEACEFUL EXPERIENCE.

IT WAS PLANNED LONG BEFORE.

I THINK THERE WASN'T A PURPOSEFUL JUSTAPOSITION.

OKAY.

IT'S A BEAUTIFUL PLAY.

IT'S A BEAUTIFUL PRODUCTION.

THAT SOUNDING TOO SILLY, THERE'S A LOT OF LOVE IN THE ROOM.

IT REALLY IS.

THERE'S CREATIVITY AND BEAUTY AND IT ALL BECOMES, IT'S ALL THERE BECAUSE OF LEER.

I WANT TO THANK YOU BOTH FOR COMING DOWN TO SPEAK WITH US.

REALLY APPRECIATE IT.

I HOPE MORE NEW YORKERS GET OUT TO SEE THE PLAY.

THANK YOU.
