August 14, 2017: NEW YORK ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

For over 200 years the New York Academy of Sciences has been making a difference at home and around the world. Find out how.

> ONE OF THE CITY'S SMARTEST ADDRESSES IS LOCATED ON THE 40th FLOOR OF 7 WORLD TRADE CENTER.

AND FOR A LUCKY GROUP OF FIFTH TO EIGHTH GRADERS, CAMP HAS JUST BEGUN.

THESE STUDENTS MAY BE PART OF TODAY'S GENERATION BUT THEY SHARE THEIR LEARNING SPACE WITH LEGENDS MUCH THE PAST.

'METROFOCUS' CONTRIBUTOR HAS MORE.

THANKS, JENNA.

THE NEW YORK ACADEMY OF SCIENCES IS AN INSTITUTION WITH 200 YEARS OF HISTORY, BRINGING TOGETHER SOME OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST MINDS.

IT'S INCLUDED THOMAS EDISON, LOUIS PASS TOUR AND MARGARET MEAD JUST TO NAME A FEW.

OUR ACADEMY WAS FOUNDED 200 YEARS AGO FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE YOUNG, OLD, BUSINESS PEOPLE, POLITICIANS, SCIENTISTS, ANYBODY WHO CARED ABOUT TRYING TO MAKE A BETTER PLANET THROUGH SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY.

WHILE THERE IS AN OFFICE SPACE DOWNTOWN, THE REAL PURPOSE OF THE ACADEMY IS ITS NETWORK.

THE NEW YORK ACADEMY OF SCIENCES ISN'T AN ACADEMY IN THE SCHOOL SENSE OF THE WORD, BUT AN ACADEMY MEANING A SOCIETY OF PEOPLE WITH A PARTICULAR FOCUS.

THIS SOCIETY'S LEGACY CAN BE SEEN ALL THROUGHOUT THE CITY.

THE ACADEMY WAS INVOLVED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF NYU, IN THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY, BOTANICAL GARDEN.

DOUGLAS BROUGHTEN IS THE ORGANIZATION'S CHIEF SCIENTIFIC OFFICER OVERSEEING SCIENCE PUBLICATIONS.

HE SAID WHEN IT WAS FOUNDED IN THE 1800s, ITS FOCUS WAS PRIMARILY NATURAL SCIENCE.

IT WAS ALL ABOUT UNDERSTANDING THE NATURAL HISTORY OF THE WORLD.

AND ESPECIALLY IN THE UNITED STATES, AS SUCH A YOUNG COUNTRY, WHAT'S HERE, WHAT KIND OF TREES ARE HERE, WHAT KIND OF BIRDS ARE HERE.

SO IT REALLY WAS A CAREER THAT PEOPLE HAD TO BE NATURAL SCIENTISTS.

THERE'S A NICE LITTLE STORY IN THAT, THAT THE PRESIDENTS OF THE ACADEMY AT THE TIME TOOK ONE OF THE YOUNG MEMBERS OF THE ACADEMY TO THE FULTON FISH MARKET.

IT USED TO BE DOWNTOWN HERE.

AND THEY WOULD GO THERE TO LOOK FOR NEW SPECIES.

THEY WOULD CATCH FISH, BRING THEM TO THE FISH MARKET, BUT THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THEY WERE.

BROTEN KNOWS HIS HISTORY.

IN RAMPING UP FOR THE ORGANIZATION BICENTENNIAL, HE WENT THROUGH THE ARCHIVES.

THE COLLECTION IS FILLED WITH INTERESTING ITEMS, LIKE THE ACADEMY'S ORIGINAL ROSTERS OF MEMBERS AND CONSTITUTIONS AND THE ORGANIZATION'S MOST WELL-KNOWN MEMBERS.

CHARLES DARWIN.

THIS IS A LEAF FROM A NOTEBOOK THAT CHARLES DARWIN KEPT WHEN HE WAS TRAVELING DOWN TO THE GALAPAGOS.

1593 IS WHEAT.

IN THIS PASSAGE HE'S TALKING ABOUT A BLYTHE THAT AFFECTS WHEAT APPARENTLY, AND IT LEAVES THE WHEAT FIELDS RED.

SO YOU CAN SEE IT FROM A DISTANCE.

THE LIST OF DISTINGUISHED FORMER MEMBERS DOESN'T END THERE.

IT ALSO INCLUDES LOUIS PASSTOUR AND JEFFERSON AND MONROE.

IT'S FASCINATING TO BE IN AN ORGANIZATION WHERE THERE'S SO MUCH HISTORY.

THE ACADEMY HAS GLOBAL REACH.

CHALLENGE 2030 BROUGHT STUDENTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD, FOR ELIMINATING POVERTY AND HUNGER.

THINK 'SHARK TANK' FOR YOUNG, SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS ENGINEERS.

KIDS ARE OFTEN TAUGHT SCIENCE IN THIS TRADITIONAL WAY WHERE THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO MEMORIZE FACTS AND IT DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING TO THEM.

WHAT WE'RE DOING IS USING THE INTERNET TO CONNECT KIDS ALL AROUND THE WORLD TO BE ABLE TO ADDRESS THE REAL CHALLENGES OF THE WORLD, LIKE REDUCING HUNGER OR FOOD WASTE OR IMPROVING THE WATER SITUATIONS IN PLACES.

THE STUDENTS THEN COME UP WITH A SOLUTION.

AND A SELECT FEW ARE CHOSEN TO COME TO NEW YORK CITY TO PITCH THEIR IDEAS TO THE LIKES OF NOBEL LAUREATES, FORTUNE 500 COMPANY REPRESENTATIVES AND ACADEMICS.

I LOVE IT.

BELINDA FROM TANZANIA, AND DAVID FROM CHINA HAS SPENT OVER A YEAR COLLABORATING REMOTELY TO CREATE GLOBAL OFF-THE-GRID EVAPORATIVE COLD KEEPERS.

THE CONCEPT IS NOT NEW, BUT THEIR EXECUTION OF IT IS.

THERE'S A SMALL BEEN THAT KEEPS PRODUCE COOL WITHOUT ELECTRICITY.

THEIR VERSION IS INEXPENSIVELY PRODUCED AND RELIES ON EASILY FOUND ITEMS THAT ARE HEADED FOR THE GARBAGE.

BASICALLY YOU HAVE CRATES THAT YOU LINE WITH FOAM, AND THEN INSIDE THE FOAM YOU POUR IN SAND, AND THEN IN THE VERY CENTER YOU PUT A SMALL BUCKET.

THIS IS WHERE YOU PUT THE VEGETABLES AND PRODUCE.

PUT A LID ON THAT.

WHAT YOU DO IS POUR WATER INTO THE SAND SO THAT IT SOAKS THROUGH AND IT'S MUD.

IN A HOT ENVIRONMENT THE WATER WILL EVAPORATE AND IN THE PROCESS COOL THE BUCKET.

IT USES THE HEAT INSIDE THE BUCKET TO COOL ITSELF OFF.

IT'S A BIT LIKE WHEN YOU SWEAT, YOUR BODY IS LIKE, THIS IS HOT WATER AND USES YOUR BODY'S HEAT TO EVAPORATE THE WATER.

THEY USE THEIR THEMSELVES.

WHERE SHE'S FROM TANZANIA, MANY PEOPLE LIVE ON LESS THAN $1 A DAY.

AFFORDING ELECTRICITY FOR A REFRIGERATOR CAN BE CHALLENGING.

EVEN THEN THE FLOW OF ELECTRICITY IS RELIABLE.

GO ON ANYTIME.

COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR MARTIN HAS A NOBEL PRIZE IN CHEMISTRY.

HE ATTENDS THE CHALLENGE 2030 PRESENTATION TO PROVIDE FEEDBACK AND HOPEFULLY ENCOURAGE YOUNG SCIENTISTS.

WE GIVE PRIZES TO PEOPLE, SORT OF AT THE END OF THEIR CAREERS.

BUT IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT TERRIFIC SCIENCE DOESN'T REQUIRE AN ADVANCED DEGREE.

IT REQUIRES ENTHUSIASM AND CURIOSITY.

CULTIVATING THAT LOVE OF SCIENCE IN YOUNG PEOPLE IS EXACTLY WHAT ACADEMY PRESIDENT AND CEO ELLIS RUBENSTINE WANTS FROM THE EVENT.

HE SEES IT AS HAVING A DOMINO EFFECT ON THE FIELD.

THESE ARE THE KIDS WHO WILL BE WORKING AS YOUNG SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS IN ACADEMIA.

AND ALSO, THEY'LL BE MENTORING THE NEXT GENERATION OF KIDS.

SO THEY'LL BE INSPIRING THEM.

THE NEW YORK ACADEMY OF SCIENCES HOPES OPPORTUNITIES LIKE THIS WILL HELP KIDS TO CONNECT POTENTIAL INNOVATORS WITH EACH OTHER IN THE FUTURE.

PURSUING A MISSION THE ORGANIZATION HAS CARRIED FOR OVER TWO CENTURIES.

REALLY AMAZING WORK.

GREAT REPORT, MADDIE.

AND THANK YOU.
