January 30, 2017: Tonight on MetroFocus

Tonight, President Trump’s travel ban sparks a battle cry heard across the country, as the nation grows more divided by the day. We’ll take you inside the protests for an exclusive interview with Steven Choi, the executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition, and one of the men who inspired the demonstrations.

Next, Jack Ford and Rafael Pi Roman track the president’s executive order, from the streets to the courts, as we probe whether the ban follows the letter of the law.

Then, yesterday, Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York celebrated 100 years of service with a luncheon featuring distinguished speakers such as Sen. Chuck Schumer and Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The organization’s executive director, Monsignor Kevin Sullivan, discusses what the organization is doing to help immigrants and refugees and how they will work with the Trump administration.

Finally, we preview a truly inspiring POV documentary called Seven Songs for a Long Life, which follows a few brave men and women who’ve learned to live life to the fullest when every moment counts.

> TONIGHT ON 'METROFOCUS' -- BACKLASH OVER THE PRESIDENT'S TRAVEL BAN AND A NATION THAT GROWS MORE DIVIDED BY THE DAY.

THIS IS SOMETHING THAT 75%, 80% OF AMERICANS OUT THERE AGREE WITH.

WE DON'T WANT PEOPLE THAT ARE TRAVELING BACK AND FORTH FROM ONE OF THESE SEVEN COUNTRIES THAT HARBOR TERRORISTS TO BE TRAVELING FREELY BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES AND THOSE COUNTRIES.

TRUMP'S EXECUTIVE ORDER SPARKS A BATTLE CRY ACROSS THE NATION.

WE'LL TAKE YOU INSIDE THE PROTESTS FOR AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH ONE OF THE MEN WHO INSPIRED THE DEMONSTRATION.

> AND WE'LL TRACK THE PRESIDENT'S EXECUTIVE ORDER FROM THE STREETS TO THE COURTS AS WE PROBE WHETHER THE BAN FOLLOWS THE LETTER OF THE LAW.

THEN WE'LL TAKE YOU TO A CELEBRATION WHERE RELIGIOUS AND AMERICAN VALUES HAVE WORKED TOGETHER TO LEND A HELPING HAND FOR 100 YEARS.

> A TRULY INSPIRING STORY OF A FEW BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE LEARNED TO LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST WHENEVER MOMENT COUNTS.

ALL THAT AND MORE AS 'METROFOCUS' STARTS RIGHT NOW.

THIS IS 'METROFOCUS' WITH RAFAEL PI ROMAN, JACK FORD, AND JENNA FLANAGAN.

FUNDING FOR THIS PROGRAM WAS PROVIDED BY -- CORPORATE FUNDING FOR 'METROFOCUS' WAS PROVIDED BY MUTUAL OF AMERICA, YOUR RETIREMENT COMPANY.

AND BY PSE&G, SERVING CUSTOMER, STRENGTHENING THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY, AND INVESTING IN THE FUTURE.

GOOD EVENING.

AND WELCOME TO 'METROFOCUS.'

I'M JENNA FLANAGAN.

IT WAS AN VENTFUL WEEKEND HERE IN NEW YORK AS THOUSANDS OF PROTESTERS FILLED THE STREETS RALLYING AGAINST PRESIDENT TRUMP'S EXECUTIVE ORDER BANNING TRAVELERS FROM SEVEN MUSLIM COUNTRIES FROM ENTERING THE U.S.

THE PRESIDENTIAL DIRECTIVE WAS ISSUED WITH LITTLE TO NO ADVANCE WARNING TO FEDERAL AGENCIES AND LED TO CONFUSION AT MANY AIRPORTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND CHAOS FOR MANY NEW YORKERS.

THE PRESIDENT DEFENDED THE ORDER SAYING IT IS NOT ABOUT RELIGION BUT ABOUT TERROR AND KEEPING OUR COUNTRY SAFE.

BUT AS I LEARNED FIRST HAND YESTERDAY FROM THE PROTESTERS AT BATTERY PARK, THAT MESSAGE MAY HAVE BEEN MISSED.

WHAT DO WE DO?

FIGHT BACK!

WHEN IMMIGRANTS ARE UNDER ATTACK?

FIGHT BACK!

SUNDAY AFTERNOON PROTESTERS EMBOLDENED BY THEIR VICTORY OF THE FEDERAL JUDGE'S STAY GATHERED IN BATTERY PARK FOR A FOLLOW-UP SHOW OF FORCE TO SAY THEY ARE NOT GIVING UP OR BACKING DOWN FROM PRESIDENT TRUMP.

I SPOKE TO STEVE CHOI, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE NEW YORK IMMIGRATION COALITION ABOUT THE URGENCY OF THE MOMENT AND WHAT'S AT STAKE FOR NEW YORK'S IMMIGRANT COMMUNITY.

TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE NEW YORK IMMIGRATION COALITION.

THE NEW YORK IMMIGRATION COALITION IS THE NATION'S LARGEST IMMIGRANT RIGHTS COALITION WHERE ACROSS THE STATE WE HAVE 200 MEMBER AGENCIES REPRESENTING THE DIVERSITY OF NEW YORK'S IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES.

THERE'S 4 MILLION IMMIGRANTS IN NEW YORK STATE, 3 MILLION HERE IN THE CITY, BUT A MILLION OUTSIDE THE CITY AND THEY'RE INCREDIBLY DIVERSE.

WHAT WE DO IS WE TRY TO ORGANIZE, ADVOCATE FOR THESE IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES AND MAKE SURE THAT EVERYBODY KNOWS HOW GOOD IMMIGRANTS ARE FOR NEW YORK AND VICE VERSA.

THAT'S THE WORK THAT YOUR ORGANIZATION'S BEEN DOING FOR THE PAST 30 YEARS OR SO.

BUT THESE EXECUTIVE ORDERS BY PRESIDENT TRUMP HAS DEFT TAKEN YOU FROM BEHIND THE SCENES IN THE SHADOWS TO THE FOREFRONT.

TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THAT HAPPENED.

SO, THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS THAT WE HAVE A PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES WHO AS A CANDIDATE RAN THE SINGLE MOST ANTI-IMMIGRANT CAMPAIGN IN THE HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES.

HE CALLED MEXICANS RACISTS AND CRIMINALS.

HE CALLED FOR A BAN ON MUSLIM IMMIGRATION.

HE DEMONIZED IMMIGRANTS AT EVERY SINGLE TURN.

NOW THAT MAN IS PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

AND WE ARE IN WEEK TWO OF THE IN WEEK ONE, PRESIDENT TRUMP DECLARED WAR ON AMERICA'S IMMIGRANTS.

THERE'S NO OTHER WAY TO PUT IT.

WITH FOUR EXECUTIVE ORDERS SAYING HE WAS GOING TO BUILD A POINTLESS, WASTEFUL WALL ON THE SOUTHERN BOARDER, UNLEASH A DEPORTATION FORCE, THAT HE WOULD BAN ALL REFUGEES FROM COMING TO THE UNITED STATES FOR SEVERAL MONTHS AND THAT HE WAS GOING TO BASICALLY DO A BACKDOOR MUSLIM BAN.

THIS IS A DECLARATION OF WAR AGAINST IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES AND NOT JUST THE 11 MILLION UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS BUT THE 46 MILLION IMMIGRANTS THAT CALL AMERICA HOME.

WE ARE NOT GOING TO STAND FOR THAT.

SO WE ARE MOBILIZING AND DOING WHATEVER IT TAKES TO MAKE SURE THAT PRESIDENT TRUMP AND THE ENTIRE POLITICAL ESTABLISHMENT KNOWS THAT IMMIGRANTS, ALLIES, MUSLIM, PEOPLE OF ALL FAITHS ARE COMING TOGETHER IN AN UNPRECEDENTED PEOPLE MOVEMENT TO SAY THAT OUR VISION FOR NEW YORK, OUR VISION FOR AMERICA IS AN INCLUSIVE ONE AND THAT IS WHY WE ARE HERE TODAY.

PEOPLE HAVE BEEN COMING TOGETHER AND REALLY MAKING AN EFFORT TO SHOW A FORCE.

WE SAW THAT AT JAFK AIRPORT ON SATURDAY.

TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE MARCH AT BATTERY PARK.

SO THE MARCH TODAY AT BATTERY PARK IS THE NEXT STEP IN OUR LONG BATTLE TO TRY TO PUSH BACK AGAINST THESE EXECUTIVE ORDERS.

BUT WE ARE WINNING.

IN WEEK TWO OF THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY WE ARE FIGHTING BACK.

ON SATURDAY NIGHT WE SAW JUDGES PUT A HALT TO TRUMP'S EXECUTIVE ORDER AND EARLY ON SUNDAY MORNING THE WHITE HOUSE BASICALLY ANNOUNCED THEY ARE PULLING BACK THEIR MUSLIM BAN, THEY'RE ALLOWING GREEN CARDHOLDERS TO COME IN.

THIS IS JUST THE START.

BUT WE'LL HAVE TO FIGHT TOOTH AND NAIL PIECE BY PIECE TO MAKE SURE WE ACHIEVE THE VISION THAT WE WANT.

NOBODY ELSE WILL BE FIGHTING FOR US BUT WE THE PEOPLE WILL NEED TO CONTINUE TO FIGHT UNTIL WE SEE THE VISION OF OUR NEW YORK, OF OUR AMERICA THAT WE WANT TO SEE, AND WE WILL NOT STOP FIGHTING UNTIL THAT HAPPENS.

HOW IMPORTANT ARE MARCHES WHEN IT COMES TO THAT FIGHT?

INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT.

YOU SAW THE EFFECT THIS HAD LAST NIGHT WHEN ORGANICALLY THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE, TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE CAME TOGETHER ACROSS THE ENTIRE COUNTRY TO MAKE A STATEMENT THAT WE WILL NOT PUT UP WITH THIS EXECUTIVE ORDER.

WE WILL NOT PUT UP WITH THIS BAN ON MUSLIM REFUGEES.

YOU SEE THE IMPACT IT'S ALREADY HAD.

THERE'S AN UNDERSTANDING, FOR THE NEXT FOUR YEARS THERE WILL BE NOBODY FIGHTING FOR US AND WE WILL HAVE TO FIGHT FOR OURSELVES AND THAT IS INCREDIBLY ENERGIZING AND EFFECTIVE AND WHY YOU'RE SEEING SUCH AN OUTPOURING OF SUPPORT.

HEY HEY, HO, HO, DONALD TRUMP HAS GOT TO GO!

HEY, HEY, HO, HO, DONALD TRUMP HAS GOT TO GO!

♪♪

> HERE'S THE DEAL.

IF YOU'RE COMING IN AND OUT OF ONE OF THOSE SEVEN COUNTRIES, BY THE WAY, IDENTIFIED BY THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION AS THE SEVEN MOST DANGEROUS COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD IN REGARD TO HARBORING TERRORISTS AND AFFIRMED BY CONGRESS MULTIPLE TIMES, THEN YOU'RE GOING TO BE SUBJECTED TEMPORARILY WITH MORE QUESTIONING UNTIL A BETTER PROGRAM IS PUT IN PLACE OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL MONTHS.

WHITE HOUSE CHIEF OF STAFF REINCE PRIEBUS DEFENDING PRESIDENT TRUMP'S EXECUTIVE ORDER ON IMMIGRATION DURING AN APPEARANCE ON NBC'S 'MEET THE PRESS.'

THE PRESIDENT'S RECENT EXECUTIVE ORDER ON IMMIGRATION HAS COME UNDER INTENSE SCRUTINY AND COULD ULTIMATELY FACE A SUPREME COURT CHALLENGE.

THIS AFTER THE AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION SCORED A TEMPORARY VICTORY IN BROOKLYN FEDERAL COURT OVER THE WEEKEND WHEN A JUDGE BLOCKED BORDER OFFICIALS FROM DEPORTING THOSE WHO HAD ALREADY BEEN DETAINED.

FOR MORE ON WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE PRESIDENT'S EXECUTIVE ORDER INCLUDING LEGAL IMPLICATIONS I'M JOINED BY MY CO-HOST, JACK FORD, A FORMER PROSECUTOR, TRIAL ATTORNEY AND FORMER CHIEF LEGAL CORRESPONDENT FOR NBC NEWS.

JACK, WELCOME.

HOW DO YOU LIKE SIT ONG THAT SIDE?

CONVERSATION FROM THIS CHAIR.

LET'S START WITH THE EXECUTIVE ORDER.

SO MUCH IS MADE OF IT.

SO MANY HAVE BEEN SIGNED.

WHAT ARE THEY AND WHERE DO THEY COME FROM?

EXECUTIVE ORDERS HAVE BEEN PART OF THE FABRIC OF OUR GOVERNMENT SINCE GEORGE WASHINGTON.

THEY COME FROM THE CONSTITUTION, NOT SPECIFICALLY DELINEATED BUT THERE'S A CLAUSE IN THE CONSTITUTION TALKING ABOUT THE PRESIDENT HAVING EXECUTIVE POWER TO MAKE SURE LAWS ARE ENFORCED APPROPRIATELY.

AND THAT'S BEEN THE SPRINGBOARD.

SO PRESIDENTS SINCE GEORGE WASHINGTON HAVE USED THEM TO VARYING DEGUYS AND WITH VARYING RESULTS.

YOU'VE SEEN FOR INSTANCE THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION WAS AN EXECUTIVE ORDER BY PRESIDENT LINCOLN.

THE INTERNMENT OF JAPANESE-AMERICAN CITIZENS BY FRANKLIN ROOSEVELT WAS AN EXECUTIVE ORDER.

BY THE WAY, WHICH WAS UPHELD BY THE U.S. SUPREME COURT.

SO WE HAVE SEEN EXECIVE ORDERS USED IN ALL SORTS OF FASHIONS THROUGHOUT THE COURSE OF HISTORY.

AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE OR THE CONGRESS DON'T LIKE OR IF THE PEOPLE DON'T LIKE THE EXECUTIVE ORDERS, WHAT CAN THEY DO?

THEY'RE NOT IRONCLAD.

JUST BECAUSE THE PRESIDENT SAYS SO.

NOW, IT CARRIES A LOT OF WEIGHT.

BUT JUST BECAUSE IT'S BEEN ISSUED DOESN'T MEAN IT HAS TO STAND.

THEY'VE BEEN CHALLENGED IN THE PAST.

YOU MENTIONED CONGRESS.

CONGRESS CAN SAY WE DON'T LIKE THIS OR YOU'RE INTERPRETING THE LAW INCORRECTLY SO CONGRESS CAN PASS NEW LEGISLATION OR LEGISLATION THAT FINE-TUNES IT.

NOW, IF CONGRESS DOES THAT, THE PRESIDENT STILL HAS TO SIGN OFF ON IT, SO YOU MIGHT HAVE THAT KIND OF A BATTLE, BUT CONGRESS DOES HAVE THE RIGHT TO STEP IN.

THE OTHER AREA WHERE YOU SEE FREQUENTLY IS THE CHALLENGE IN THE COURTS.

NOW, I SAY FREQUENTLY NOT BECAUSE THEY'RE WON FREQUENTLY BUT YOU WILL SEE CHALLENGES FILED FREQUENTLY.

GENERALLY SPEAKING, THE COURTS GIVE GREAT DEFERENCE TO PRESIDENTIAL DECISIONS WHEN YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT AREAS OF NATIONAL SECURITY AND MATTERS OF STATE.

SO THERE HAVE BEEN CHALLENGES, YOU CAN MAKE CHALLENGES BUT THEY'VE BEEN RARELY SUCCESSFUL.

SO PEOPLE AND CRITICS HAVE BEEN SAYING THAT THIS EXECUTIVE ORDER ON THE REFUGEES AND THE IMMIGRANTS IS ILLEGAL, UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

IS IT?

AGAIN, CONSTITUTIONALITY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLD TESHGS BEHOLDER BEING JUDGES.

YOU START OFF WITH A NOTION THAT IT IS PRESUMPTIVELY CONSTITUTIONAL UNTIL YOU CAN PROVE IT ISN'T.

THAT GOES BACK TO WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT, THE PRESIDENT IS GIVEN BROAD DEFERENCE IN THESE TYPES OF THINGS.

IN ORDER TO GET SOMETHING LIKE THAT THROWN OUT, YOU WOULD HAVE TO PROVE THAT IT'S SO FAR BEYOND THE REALM OF THE PRESIDENTIAL POWERS IN TERMS OF NATIONAL SECURITY.

HERE'S A CASE THAT WAS THROWN OUT IN THE 1950s.

PRESIDENT HARRY TRUMAN, YOU REMEMBER NATIONALIZED THE STEEL INDUSTRY.

BECAUSE OF THE STRIKES THAT WERE GOING ON.

HE SAID, AND THIS SOUNDS GOOD, I NEED TO DO THIS BECAUSE THIS NATION NEEDS TO FUNCTION.

THE SUPREME COURT SAID -- THE COURT SAID, YOU KNOW WHAT, IT SOUNDS GOOD AND WE UNDERSTAND WHY YOU'RE DOING IT, BUT THAT'S BEYOND YOUR CONSTITUTIONAL AUTHORITY.

THE CRITICS ARE CALLING THE EXECUTIVE ORDERS SIGNED LAST FRIDAY BY PRESIDENT TRUMAN -- PRESIDENT TRUMP A BAN ON MUSLIMS.

IS IT?

IT ISN'T.

WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE LANGUAGE, AND I UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE ARE ARGUING THAT BECAUSE CERTAINLY YOU CAN ARGUE IT MIGHT HAVE THAT IMPACT, YOU LOOK AT THE LANGUAGE, IT'S SAYING -- IT'S BANNING, FOR INSTANCE, IT SAYS FOR 90 DAYS ANYBODY COMING IN FROM THE SEVEN NATIONS THAT ARE LISTED -- BY THE WAY, THOSE NATIONS DIDN'T JUST COME FROM THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION.

THEY WERE PARTS OF LAWS IN 2015 AND 2016 IDENTIFIED AS NATIONS --

PASSED BY CONGRESS UNDER THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION.

EXACTLY.

I DIDN'T KNOW THAT.

IN FACT, THE ONLY NAME OF A COUNTRY THAT APPEARS IN THIS EXECUTIVE ORDER IS SYRIA.

THE OTHER COUNTRIES --

THEY'RE SAYING WE'RE GOING TO LOOK AT THOSE.

IDEA WAS WHEN THOSE WERE LISTED BEFORE IT WAS BECAUSE THEY WERE GOVERNMENTS, RUN BY GOVERNMENTS THAT WE COULD NOT TRUST.

SO IT EVENTUALLY SAYS ANYBODY FROM THOSE NATIONS FOR 90 DAYS, NO REFUGEES AT ALL FOR 120 DAYS, AND YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER, THERE ARE TIME LIMITATIONS ON THESE.

THEY HAVE EXPIRATION DATES UNLESS YOU THAI EAR MOVED FORWARD.

THEN SYRIA, NO REFUGEES INDEFINITELY.

HAS THIS KIND OF BAN ON WHOLE GROUPS OF PEOPLE FROM A PARTICULAR NATION EVER HAPPENED BEFORE?

IT'S INTERESTING BECAUSE YOU DID SEE PRESIDENT OBAMA BACK IN 2011 IMPOSE A SIX-MONTH MORATORIUM ON REFUGEES COMING FROM IRAQ.

WOW.

I DIDN'T KNOW THAT.

SO SOMETIMES CIRCUMSTANCES RESULT IN -- AGAIN, THE PRESIDENT HAS POWER UNDER EXECUTIVE ORDERS BUT ALSO UNDER THE IMMIGRATION AND NATIONALIZATION ACT, IT GIVES THE PRESIDENT THE ABILITY TO RESTRICT IMMIGRATION IF THEY BELIEVE -- THE PRESIDENT BELIEVES IT'S NECESSARY FOR NATIONAL SECURITY.

SO PEOPLE ARE LINING UP, LAWYERS ARE LINING UP, THE ORGANIZATION LINING UP TO TAKE THIS TO COURT.

WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT?

ONE OF THE THINGS I ALWAYS TEACH IN LAW SCHOOL, ONE OF THE QUESTIONS PEOPLE SAY, CAN I SUE THEM?

AND THE ANSWER IS YOU CAN ALWAYS SUE.

THE BIGGER QUESTION IS, ARE YOU GOING TO WIN.

HERE WE KNOW THAT ACLU STEPPED IN AND A JUDGE STEPPED IN AND JUST SAID I'M GOING TO PUT A TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER JUST ON ONE PORTION OF THIS IN TERMS OF THE PEOPLE WHO WERE ACTUALLY BEING HELD IN KENNEDY AIRPORT IN THIS AREA.

DID NOT PUT A TEMPORARY RESTRAINING ORDER ON THE ENTIRE EXECUTIVE ORDER SO THAT'S STILL IN PLACE.

OTHER PEOPLE SAY WE'RE GOING TO CHALLENGE IT INCLUDING PERHAPS A CONSORTIUM OF DEMOCRATIC ATTORNEY GENERALS WILL CHALLENGE IT.

YOU CAN CHALLENGE IT.

WILL YOU BE SUCCESSFUL?

IN THE PAST, THE PERCENTAGE OF TIMES THESE HAVE BEEN CHALLENGED SUCCESSFULLY YOU'LL SAY THE ODD ARE NO, BUT IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT A COURT MIGHT NOT TAKE A LOOK AT THIS AND SAY FOR SOME REASON, WE FIND THAT THIS IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL OR AGAIN IF YOU'RE LOOKING AT THE ODDS, THEY WOULD LOOK AT IT AND SAY, LOOK, YOU MIGHT NOT LIKE THIS, AND PEOPLE MIGHT BE DISAPPOINTED FOR A LOT OF REASONS OR DISTURBED FAR LOT OF REASONS, BUT THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION IS GOING TO ARGUE WE HAVE THAT POWER, WE'RE DOING WHAT OTHER PRESIDENTS HAVE DONE AND THE CONSTITUTION AND THE LAW HAS SAID -- AND YOU G BACK TO THE INTERNMENT OF JAPANESE-AMERICANS, THE LAW HAS SAID, EVEN THOUGH THAT CASE WOULD NO LONGER CONTROL, BUT THE LAW HAS SAID THE PRESIDENT IN TERMS OF NATIONAL SECURITY HAS BROAD POWERS.

IN FIVE SECONDS, THIS IS GOING TO GO ALL THE WAY TO THE SUPREME COURT?

YOU KNOW, IT MIGHT.

THE SUPREME COURT GETS 10,000 APPLICATIONS A YEAR, HEARS 70.

IF ONE GETS THERE, THIS MIGHT BE THE ONE.

THE QUESTION BECOMES HOW QUICKLY.

IT WILL BE QUICKER THAN USUAL BUT QUICK IN THE COURTS IS NOT WHAT YOU AND I THINK OF IN THE REAL WORLD AS BEING QUICK.

JACK, THANKS FOR CLEARING THIS UP FOR US.

ALL RIGHT.

> NOBODY HAS BEEN A BETTER ALLY ON THE FIGHT FOR OUR IMMIGRANTS THAN THE CHURCH AND HERE IN AMERICA AND OUR GREAT NEW YORK DIOCESE, OUR CATHOLIC CHARITIES EVERY DAY REMINDS US OF WHAT COULD BE IN A HARMONIOUS SOCIETY.

WE HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT WHAT UNITES US IS MORE POWERFUL THAN WHAT DIVIDES US.

AND WHETHER YOU BELIEVE IN THE WORDS AND TEACHINGS OF MATTHEW 25 OR THOSE IN JUDAISM OR THE KORAN, THE BASIS IS STILL LOVE AND COMMUNITY.

THAT IS THE COMMON DENO, MA'AM -- DENOMINATOR.

SPEAKERS FROM SUNDAY'S LUNCHEON CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF CATHOLIC CHARITIES, AN ORGANIZATION COMMITTED TO HELPING SOLVE THE PROBLEMS OF CATHOLIC AND NON-CATHOLIC NEW YORKERS IN NEED.

WITH ITS 90 METROPOLITAN AGENCIES FOCUSING ON ISSUES SUCH AS PROTECTING AND NURTURING CHILDREN, RESOLVING FAMILY CRISES, FEEDING THE HUNGRY, ASSISTING THE HOMELESS, INTEGRATING REFUGEES AND IMMIGRANTS INTO SOCIETY, CATHOLIC CHARITIES IS MOST CERTAINLY DOING THE LORD'S WORK.

JOINING ME TO TALK ABOUT YESTERDAY'S CELEBRATION AND THE WORK OF CATHOLIC CHARITIES AND THE FUTURE OF THE ORGANIZATION IS MONSIGNOR KEVIN SULLIVAN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE CATHOLIC CHARITIES OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF NEW YORK.

WELCOME.

THANK YOU.

BRIEFLY MENTIONED SOME OF THE THINGS YOU DO AND HAVE BEEN DOING FOR 100 YEARS.

I WONDER IF YOU COULD ELABORATE A LITTLE ON YOUR WORK.

SURE.

I'D TO ELABORATE.

PARTICULARLY I'D LIKE TO ELABORATE ON THE FACT THAT ALWAYS ANNIVERSARY IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO KIND OF MARK WHAT HAS BEEN DONE.

BUT OUR FOCUS IS NOT ON WHAT HAS BEEN DONE BUT WHAT WE WILL DO TO PROVIDE HELP AND CREATE HOPE FOR NEW YORK.

YES, IT'S NICE TO LOOK BACK BUT IT'S MORE IMPORTANT TO LOOK AROUND US AND TO SEE THAT THERE ARE ONGOING NEEDS WHICH WE INTEND TO MEET AS CATHOLIC CHARITIES.

THERE ARE SO MANY CRISES GOING ON THAT WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT CENTURY TO MAKING SURE THAT WE'RE WORKING TO SUPPORT FAMILIES AND CHILDREN IN NEED OF ALL RELIGIONS AND TO PARTNER WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS, OTHER GROUPS IN NEW YORK TO MAKE THIS AN EVEN MORE CARE, COMPASSIONATE, INCLUSIVE METROPOLITAN AREA.

CLEARLY AMONG THE MOST IN NEED.

TODAY IN THE CITY AND ACROSS THE COUNTRY OBVIOUSLY ARE THE UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS AND IMMIGRANTS, PARTICULARLY IMMIGRANTS FROM THE MIDDLE EAST AS WE SEE THEY'RE KIND OF IN THE CROSSHAIR OF THIS ADMINISTRATION.

FIRST OF ALL, WHAT IS THE POSITION OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH ON UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS AND THIS ADMINISTRATION'S CALL FOR DEFUNDING OF SANCTUARY CITIES ON THE RECENT EXECUTIVE ORDER ON --

OUR FUNDAMENTAL POSITION IS THAT EVERY INDIVIDUAL, IMMIGRANT, REFUGEE, INDEPENDENT OF THEIR LEGAL STATUS, IS MADE IN THE IMAGE AND LIKENESS OF GOD.

AND IF CATHOLIC CHARITIES HAS THE RESOURCES WE'RE GOING TO SERVE TO HELP MAKE THOSE BASIC NEEDS.

HOW CAN YOU HELP THE UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS AND THE REFUGEES NOW IN THE CROSSHAIRS?

WE HAVE BEEN HELPING IMMIGRANTS FOR DECADES.

AND OUR HELP IS INDEPENDENT OF THEIR STATUS.

IF THEY NEED A MEAL, WE PROVIDE A MEAL.

IF THEY NEED SUPPORT, WE PROVIDE SUPPORT.

WITH MANY OF THOSE IMMIGRANTS WE WORK WITH THEM IF THEIR STATUS IS NOT WITH THE PROPER DOCUMENTS.

WE HELP THEM TO GET THE PROPER DOCUMENTS.

THAT COULD BE REUNIING WITH FAMILY, IT COULD BE AUTHORIZATION FOR WORK.

WE WORK WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THE LEGAL SYSTEM OF THE UNITED STATES AND WE TRY TO REMEDY ANY DEFICIENCIES THAT IMMIGRANTS MIGHT HAVE.

AND WE STILL PROVIDE FOR THEIR BASIC NEEDS EVEN AS WE'RE WORKING WITH THEM.

DID THE ISSUE OF THE EXECUTIVE ORDERS ON REFUGEES AND IMMIGRANTS COME UP YESTERDAY IN YOUR CELEBRATION?

YES.

IT WAS PART OF IT.

BECAUSE ONE OF THE MAIN THINGS THAT CATHOLIC CHARITIES DOES AS PART OF THIS METROPOLITAN AREA IS TO BE AT THE CENTER OF WELCOMING IMMIGRANTS AND REFUGEES, HELPING THEM TO BE PART OF THEIR NEW HOME.

SO IT DID COME UP, AND WE WERE VERY CLEAR THAT THESE EXECUTIVE ORDERS ARE INCREDIBLY TROUBLING TO US.

WE'RE GOING TO SPEAK CIVILLY AND RESPECTFULLY, BUT NO ONE SHOULD MISTAKE THE CIVILITY, THE RESPECTFULNESS OF OUR TONE THAT IT DOESN'T MEAN WE ARE NOT DEDICATED, THAT WE ARE COMMITTED, THAT WE ARE PASSIONATE, THAT WE DON'T FEEL ANGUISH AT THE TONE AND TENOR OF THESE EXECUTIVE ORDERS.

THEY ARE EXTREMELY TROUBLING TO US.

AND WE'RE GOING TO WORK TO MAKE SURE THAT IMMIGRANTS ARE PROTECTED, THAT REFUGEES ARE WELCOMED INTO THIS GREAT METROPOLIS.

THIS IS A POSITION, A POINT WHERE YOU AND THE ADMINISTRATION DON'T SEE EYE TO EYE, BUT LAST FRIDAY WE SAW THE MARCH ON LIFE IN WASHINGTON, SOMETHING THAT THE CHURCH HAS SUPPORTED, WHERE THE VICE PRESIDENT PENCE FOR THE FIRST TIME, THE VICE PRESIDENT SPOKE IN THE MARCH.

DO YOU SEE THAT THAT'S AN AREA FOR PERHAPS YOU AND THE ADMINISTRATION COULD BE BEGIN TO SEE EYE TO EYE AND WORK TOGETHER?

CATHOLIC CHARITIES AND THE CATHOLIC CHURCH, WE BELIEVE WE NEED TO ENGAGE POLITICIAN, ELECTED OFFICIALS.

WE HAVE RARELY MET AN ELECTED OFFICIAL WITH WHOM WE AGREE WITH ON EVERY ISSUE OR ONE WITH WHOM WE HAVE DISAGREED WITH ON EVERY ISSUE.

OUR POSITION IS WE ENGAGE, BECAUSE WE HAVE VALUES AND BELIEFS THAT WE BELIEVE WE NEED TO BRING TO THE ATTENTION OF AN ADMINISTRATION SO THAT WE WORK TOGETHER TO FOST TER COMMON GOOD.

WE HAVE A FIRM BELIEF THAT OUR EXPERIENCE -- WE UNDERSTAND IMMIGRANTS AND REFUGEES.

WE UNDERSTAND THEIR REALITY.

AND WE WANT ANY ADMINISTRATION TO DEVELOP POLICIES BASED ON THE REALITY AND THE FACTS OF THE SITUATION.

WE CAN BRING THAT TO THE ATTENTION OF THE ADMINISTRATION.

ALL RIGHT.

MONSIGNOR, THANK YOU FOR JOINING US TODAY.

AND CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR 100th ANNIVERSARY.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

> HOSPICE CARE IS RARELY ASSOCIATED WITH SONG AND DANCE.

WHILE PRODUCING A DOCUMENTARY AT A SCOTTISH HOSPICE, FILMMAKER AMY HARDIER LEARNED THAT MANY TERMINALLY ILL PATIENTS WANTED TO DO JUST THAT.

IN THE LATEST POV PRESENTATION, 'SEVEN SONGS FOR A LONG LIFE,' SIX HOSPICE CARE PATIENTS FACED AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE WITH SONG AND BRAVERY.

HERE'S A PREVIEW.

YOU JUST DON'T KNOW.

WILL I BE LIVING WITH THIS FOR THREE MONTHS, 12 MONTHS, OR 10 YEARS?

HOW ON EARTH DO THEY PLAN THEIR FUTURE?

I WILL BE THERE.

♪♪

I TRY TO HOLD ON TO TIME.

WHEN PEOPLE ARE TOLD THEY'RE DYING BUT THEY'RE STILL LIVING.

JOINING ME NOW VIA SKYPE FROM THE UNITED KINGDOM IS 'SEVEN SONGS FOR A LONG LIFE' DIRECTOR AMY HARDY.

WELCOME TO THE SHOW.

I AM SO PLEASED TO BE HERE.

WE'RE GLAD TO HAVE YOU.

SO THIS FILM IS ABOUT A VERY HEAVY SUBJECT.

BUT ON THE POSITIVE SIDE, YOU WOULDN'T GET THAT NECESSARILY FROM THE TITLE.

THERE'S AN ELEMENT OF JOY TO IT.

I'M WONDERING IF YOU COULD TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HOW THESE TWO SEEMINGLY OPPOSING ISSUES COME TOGETHER IN THE DOCUMENTARY.

IT'S THE LARGEST HOSPICE IN SCOTLAND.

I HAVE TO TELL YOU, I WAS TERRIFIED.

I HAD NO IDEA WHAT TO EXPECT.

AND I WALKED IN THERE JUST KIND OF REAL HI THINKING I WONDER IF I CAN GET AWAY AGAIN.

BUT OF COURSE WHAT I DISCOVERED IS THAT WHEN PEOPLE KNOW THAT THEIR LIFE IS COMING TO AN END, LIFE CAN BECOME VERY VALUABLE.

NOT FOR EVERYBODY, BUT FOR QUITE A LOT OF PEOPLE.

AND AS I HUNG AROUND THE HOSPICE, WHAT BEGAN TO HAPPEN WAS THAT PEOPLE STARTED TO SING TO ME.

AND THEY POURED THEIR PASSION, THEIR DELIGHT FOR LIFE, THEIR MEMORIES THROUGH THEIR VOICE AND KIND OF INTO THE CAMERA.

I WAS VERY MOVED, AND THAT'S HOW THE FILM CAME ABOUT.

I THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE, PRETTY MUCH EVERYBODY, CAN RELATE TO SOME SORT OF EXPERIENCE WITH MUSIC, SAVING THEIR LIFE.

BUT HOW IS THIS MORE SIGNIFICANT FOR THESE PATIENTS?

FROM THE FIRST MOMENT, SERENADED US ALL WITH THE SONG 'I LEFT MY HEART IN SAN FRANCISCO.'

AND IN THE BEGINNING, MUSIC IS USED TO SAY TO PEOPLE, YOU KNOW WHAT, I'M A PERSON, I'M MORE THAN A DISEASE, AND WE CAN'T HELP IT.

WE CELEBRATE WITH THEM.

THEY ARE WONDERFUL.

BUT I WAS THERE FOR A LONG TIME.

I WAS GLAD TO BE THERE FOR OVER THREE YEARS.

AND IN THAT TIME, THE PATIENTS ALWAYS CHOSE THE SONGS THEY WANTED TO SING TO ME.

AND THE SONG GRADUALLY BECAME A WAY OF FOCUSING AND CONFRONTING DEATH AND LOVE.

AND IN THE MOST EXTRAORDINARY SEQUENCE NEAR THE END OF THE FILM, NIKOLAI, WHO YOU'VE SEEN AS A WONDERFUL MOM OF FOUR KIDS WITH HER -- SHE HAS A VERY DIFFICULT TIME AND SHE COMES OUT OF THAT AND SAYS OKAY, I'M READY TO SING.

ARE YOU READY?

I'M GOING TO SING NOW.

YOU KNOW, AND SHE'S STILL -- YOU CAN SEE IT IN HER EYES, SHE'S STILL ON A HUGE AMOUNT OF PAIN MEDICATION, BUT SHE WANTED TO SING MICHAEL SNIPES SONG 'EVERYBODY HURTS.'

THE WAY SHE SINGS THAT, SHE DOES AS A DUE WET A NURSE MANDY, IT TAKES YOUR BREATH AWAY.

IT FEELS LIKE A TREMENDOUS GIFT OF GENEROSITY FROM SOMEONE WHO'S BEEN TO THE OTHER SIDE OF PAIN AND COME BACK AGAIN.

DEFINITELY A CELEBRATION OF LIFE I THINK FOR THE PATIENTS AND ALSO FOR THE VIEWER.

YOU COME TO REALIZE HOW BEAUTIFUL LIFE ACTUALLY IS.

YES.

AND I LOVE THE FACT THAT THE SONGS ARE SO DIFFERENT.

YOU KNOW, YOU'VE GOT OLD SINATRA NUMBERS.

YOU'VE GOT AGNES, MODERN DISCO.

YOU'VE GOT TRADITIONAL SCOTS.

I LOVE OLIVIA SING, REMEMBERING HER HUSBAND WHEN SHE DOES HER SONG.

AND I LOVE THE FACT THAT EVERYBODY SINGS WHAT THEY MOST CARE ABOUT.

ALL RIGHT.

WELL, LISTEN, THANK YOU SO MUCH FIRST FOR MAKING THIS AMAZING DOCUMENTARY BUT ALSO TAKING TIME TO SHARE WITH US ABOUT IT.

OH, IT'S A REAL PLEASURE.

I'M SO THRILLED ON BEHALF OF THE BRAVE AND WONDERFUL AND QUIRKY PATIENTS AND INSPIRATIONAL STAFF THAT I MET THERE.

I'M SO THRILLED THAT ALL OF US ARE GOING TO BE SEEN IN THE U.S.

WE NEVER IMAGINED THAT THIS LITTLE SCOTTISH HOSPICE WOULD FIND AN AUDIENCE OVER THE POND.

SO THANK YOU FOR WATCHING AND I HOPE YOU LOVE IT.

I WAS GOING TO SAY THAT'S THE MAGIC OF PBS HERE IN THE STATES.

YEAH.

TRULY WONDERFUL.

THANK YOU.
