Author and Lieutenant Bernard Whalen Discusses the Early History of the NYPD

Encore: June 29, 2015

The New York Police Department has been an iconic part of the city since its official formation in 1898. NYPD Lieutenant Bernard Whalen, who has been on the force for over thirty years, set out to chronicle this history, doing research in the library during his lunch hour and writing in the evenings after a full day on the job. The result of his work is The NYPD’s First Fifty Years: Politicians, Police Commissioners and Patrolmen, co-authored with his father, Jon Whalen, which highlights the formation of the department, the inner workings of the force and those who have contributed—both positively and negatively—to the department.
