Full Episode Jan. 16: State of the State, Lincoln Center, Coywolves

Encore: January 16, 2014

On the next edition of MetroFocus, what’s on Governor Andrew Cuomo’s agenda for 2014? In his State of the State address, the Governor proposed property tax cuts, medical marijuana reform, tougher penalties for texting and driving, performance-based bonus pay for teachers, upgrading New York’s airports and statewide universal pre-kindergarten among dozens of other ideas.

New York Magazine contributing editor Chris Smith tells MetroFocus host Rafael Pi Roman that Governor Cuomo “laid out a lot of interesting  sounding ideas, but given what he’s emphasized in cutting taxes, how he’s going to pay for the good stuff is a very open question.”  Smith also offers perspective on the changing relationship between Governor Cuomo and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio. “They’ve known each other a long time,” Smith said, “… to some extent the Governor still sees de Blasio as a subordinate. When you’re mayor of New York City, you’re almost an equal.  And that’s the dynamic that they’re working through right now.”

President of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Reynold Levy, arrived at the 16 acre campus in 2002. He’s stepping down at the end of this month and leaving a very different Lincoln Center to his successor. Levy spearheaded the $1.2 billion re-development of Lincoln Center, and he says the changes make it “more energetic, more vital, more multi-lingual and more open…” than ever before.

Chances are you’ve never seen a wolf-coyote hybrid called the coywolf but it has arrived in New York. “Meet the Coywolf,” the latest documentary from PBS’ Nature series, premiering on January 22 at 8pm on PBS stations nationwide, introduces us to the elusive canines. They originated in eastern Canada and are now emerging in New York City and on Long Island. Two wildlife biologists featured in the program, Mark Weckel of the American Museum of Natural History and Christopher Nagy of Mianus River Gorge Preserve, join Pi Roman to talk about tracking the hybrid species as part of their Gotham Coyote Project.

And, what should a non-sports fan know about the coming year’s big events? Long time New York sportscaster and author Len Berman is joined by NPR commentator Frank Deford and The Wall Street Journal’s sports editor Sam Walker to tackle the big issues coming up in sports in 2014 including, football concussions, the first cold weather, open stadium Superbowl coming to New Jersey in just a few weeks, and why the rest of the world will be focused on World Cup soccer in Brazil.

LINCOLN CENTER HAS NEVER BEEN MORE ENERGETIC, VITAL, MULTILINGUAL

MEET THE COYWOLF.

IT'S MASTER THE ART O BLENDING INTO THE BACKGROUND AND IS SEEN ONLY BY THE LUCKY VIEW

AND A SPORTS REVIEW FOR THE NONSPORTS FANATIC.

> HELLO, I'M RAFAEL PI ROMAN WELCOME TO 'METROFOCUS.'

IT'S THE START OF THE FOURTH YEAR OF HIS TERM OF NEW YORK AND THIS IS PROPERTY TAX CUTS, MEDICAL MARIJUANA REFORM PERFORMANCE-BASED BONUS PAY FO TEACHERS, TO LIST JUST A FEW ITEMS.

WE TALKED TO 'NEW YORK MAGAZINE' CONTRIBUTING EDITOR CHRIS SMIT TO SEE WHAT IT ALL MEANS, BU HERE'S HOW HE SUMMED UP HI POWERPOINT SLIDE-FILLED SPEECH

WE ARE ONE, WE ARE UPSTATE, WE ARE DOWN STATE, BUT WE AR ONE.

WE ARE LATINO, WE AR AFRICAN-AMERICAN, BUT WE ARE ONE.

WE'RE NEW YORK CITY, AND WE AR BUFFALO, BUT WE ARE ONE.

WE ARE DEMOCRAT AND REPUBLICAN BUT WE ARE ONE THAT IS A PROMISE OF THIS GREA STATE.

THAT IS E. PLURABUS UNUM, TH FOUNDING PREMISE THE PROMISE WE'RE GOING TO PAS ON TO OUR CHILDREN AND THE PROMISE, MY FRIENDS, WE AR GOING TO MAKE THE REALITY IN THIS GREAT STATE WORKING TOGETHER THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU AN LET'S HAVE A GREAT 2014.

WITH ME NOW IS CHRIS SMITH OF 'NEW YORK MAGAZINE.'

CHRIS, WELCOME

THANKS FOR HAVING WE.

CHRIS, WAS THIS A SPEECH BY A GOVERNOR WHO WANTS TO GET REAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS DONE IN THE NEXT FOUR YEARS, OR WAS IT RE-ELECTION SPEECH OR SPEECH T RUN FOR PRESIDENT IF POSSIBLE?

BOTH.

IT'S FASCINATING THAT CLIP THERE AT THE END WAS REALLY THE ONLY SORT O EMOTIONAL, RHETORICAL FLOURISH THE OTHER 59-PLUS MINUTES WERE PRETTY DRY I MEAN, A LOT OF IT WAS DEVOTE TO CUOMO HAMMERING HOME WHAT H SEES AS THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE FIRST THREE YEARS, THING LIKE TIGHTENING GUN LAWS, THINGS LIKE BRINGING THE STATE BUDGET IN ON TIME, THINGS LIKE TH INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF JOBS IN THE STATE, SO THAT WAS KIND OF, IF NOT BORING, YOU KNOW, STANDARD HE THEN PIVOTED TO SAY HERE' HOW I'M GOING TO BUILD ON THOS THINGS, PUMP MONEY INT HARDENING THE CITY AND STATE AGAINST FUTURE CLIMATE DISASTERS.

HE'S GOING TO TAKE OVER FROM THE PORT AUTHORITY THE REBUILDING OF LaGUARDIA AND KENNEDY AIRPORT, YOU KNOW, YOU TOUCH ON SOM THINGS LIKE THE EXPERIMENTS, S TO SPEAK, IN MEDICAL MARIJUANA SO THERE WAS NOT A LOT O NOVELTY OR BIG BOLD IDEAS.

SO, CHRIS, OBVIOUSLY, HIS BIG MESSAGE IS ALL KINDS OF TAXES.

ON THE OTHER HAND, WE KNOW THA THE NEW MAYOR, MAYOR de BLASIO HIS BIG ITEM AND PRIORITY IN HIS AGENDA IS TO RAISE TAXES ON TH RICHEST NEW YORK CITY CITIZENS IN ORDER TO PAY FOR UNIVERSA PRE-K AND SOME AFTER SCHOO PROGRAMS HOW IS THAT -- HOW ARE YOU GOING TO SQUARE THAT

YOU'RE HITTING EXACTLY ON THE CENTRAL POLITICAL AND PRACTICA PROBLEM WITH THE GOVERNOR' SPEECH AND AGENDA, IS THAT H LAID OUT A LOT OF INTERESTIN SOUNDING IDEAS, BUT GIVEN WHAT HE'S EMPHASIZED IN CUTTING TAXES, HOW HE'S GOING TO PAY FOR THE GOOD STUFF IS A VERY OPE QUESTION, AND ON THAT ON PARTICULAR IDEA, de BLASIO WANTING TO RAISE TAXES, YO KNOW, CUOMO'S ALMOST DIAMETRICALLY OPPOSED IN THE BIG PICTURE.

NOW, I THINK HE'S GOING TO EVENTUALLY GOING TO GIVE GROUN AND ALLOW THE CITY TO RAIS TAXES, AT LEAST INCREMENTALLY ON THE WEALTHIEST

SO IF THERE'S A FIGHT, de BLASIO WINS ON THIS ONE?

I DON'T KNOW.

THE TWO MEN HAVE A LOT O INCENTIVE, BOTH PERSONAL AND POLITICAL TO NOT TURN IT INTO CONFRONTATION AND THEY'VE DONE A GOOD JOB AND THEIR STAFFS SO FAR OF KEEPING IT FROM BEING HEAD TO HEAD

YOU'VE WRITTEN ABOUT THEI RELATIONSHIP, YOU THINK IT'S A REAL FRIENDSHIP.

HOW IS THAT GOING TO AFFEC THEM

THEY'VE KNOWN EACH OTHER LONG TIME, THEY ARE BASICALLY IN THE SAME PLACE PHILOSOPHICALLY WITH SOME DIFFERENCES THAT W JUST OUTLINED.

IT'S GOING TO CHANGE BECAUSE CUOMO STILL, YOU KNOW, HE HIRE de BLASIO TO WORK FOR HIM AT HUD IN D.C. AND TO SOME EXTENT, TH GOVERNOR STILL SEES de BLASIO AS A SUBORDINATE.

WHEN YOU'RE MAYOR OF NEW YOR CITY, YOU'RE ALMOST AN EQUAL AND THAT'S THE DYNAMIC THEY AR WORKING THROUGH RIGHT NOW.

SO, CHRIS, WILL THE GOVERNO RUN FOR PRESIDENT IN 2016?

WELL, A LOT OF THINGS HAVE TO HAPPEN, YOU KNOW, I'M SURE I WAS PURELY COINCIDENTAL, BUT A POTENTIAL REPUBLICAN RIVAL CHRIS CHRISTIE TOOK A BIG HI YESTERDAY, JUST AS CUOMO WAS SPEAKING THE NEXT BIG OBSTACLE IN POLITICAL TERMS IS HILLARY CLINTON AND WE'RE TWO OR S YEARS AWAY, SHE'S IN A STRON POSITION NOW IF SHE WERE NOT TO RUN AND PEOPLE AROUND THE GOVERNOR THINK THERE ARE REASONS SHE WOULDN'T THEN THE PATH IS OPEN FOR CUOMO.

CHRIS, THANK YOU SO MUCH.

WE'LL HAVE YOU BACK.

ANY TIME, THANKS.

> IF YOU'VE NEVER BEEN TO OU TISCH STUDIOS, YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW WE SHARE A CORNER O LINCOLN CENTER'S 16-ACRE CAMPUS.

BUILT IN THE 1950s, A MASSIV REDEVELOPMENT OF THIS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER WAS COMPLETED IN THE FALL OF 2012, SO IT SEEMED LIK A GOOD IDEA TO ASK LINCOLN CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS PRESIDENT, REYNOLD LEVY, TO TELL US HOW THE PLACE HAS CHANGED SINCE HE TOOK OVER IN 2002 AND WHAT HE'S PLANNING NEXT BEFORE HE STEPS DOWN AT THE END OF TH MONTH.

TODAY, LINCOLN CENTER IS PLACE THAT HAS LOTS OF GREEN SPACE.

TODAY IT'S PHYSICALLY ACCESSIBLE TO THE HANDICAPPED TODAY, THERE'S NO BARRIE BETWEEN PEDESTRIANS AND TH STREET SCAPE WE USED TO SAY IF YOU WALKED ACROSS LINCOLN CENTER, YOU HAV TO GO THROUGH 14 LANES O TRAFFIC AND WE REWARDED YOU WITH ONE MORE OPPORTUNITY TO GET HI BY A TAXI CAB.

NO LONGER.

NOW YOU WALK UP THOSE STEP UNIMPEDED.

LOTS OF RESTAURANTS AT A WHOLE VARIETY OF PRICE POINTS.

FREE PROGRAMMING IN ALL OF THESE PUBLIC SPACES.

THE CONVERSION OF WHAT WAS A EMPTY DARK, DANK SPACE INTO LIVELY ATRIUM THAT OFFERS FREE ENTERTAINMENT, DISCOUNT TICKETS, A PLACE TO RELAX AND ENJOY A NEWSPAPER, OR IF YOU'RE WORKIN AT HOME, TO USE OUR FREE WIFI, SO WE'RE SEEING ENORMOUS AMOUNTS OF ENERGY OF NEW PEOPLE, YOUNG PEOPLE, PEOPLE FROM THE OUTE BURROS COME TO LINCOLN CENTER.

IT'S FOR THEM, TOO

WHEN I FIRST LEARNED THER WAS GOING TO BE A REDEVELOPMENT, THE FIRST THING I WORRIED ABOU WAS THE FOUNTAINS.

I HAD MY FIRST DATE WITH M WIFE, AND IT WAS AN ISSUE, BUT YOU DECIDED ULTIMATELY NOT T GET RID OF IT BUT MAKE IT A LO BETTER

CORRECT, CORRECT.

WE UNDERSTOOD THAT NEW YORKERS ENJOY THE FOUNTAIN AND YOU AND YOUR WIFE HAVE A LOT OF COMPAN IN MEETING THERE IN FACT, THERE HAVE BEEN MAN HOLLYWOOD MOVIES THAT FOCUS ON THE MOUNTAIN, NOT AT LEAST JUMPING AROUND INSIDE TH FOUNTAIN

WHAT DOES LINCOLN CENTER MEAN FOR NEW YORK CITY, DO YOU THINK?

YOU KNOW, I HOPE THAT, AND AM TOLD THAT IF YOU ARE A BROW BAG CARRYING METRO CARD TOTING NEW YORKER WHO'S COMING IN FRO THE BRONX WITH YOUR KIDS TO GO TO MID SUMMER NIGHT'S SWING AN BE ABLE TO DANCE AT FREE O CHARGE OR TO GO TO A FRE PERFORMANCE OR TO PICK A $20 DISCOUNT TICKET OR GO TO THE ATRIUM, THAT LINCOLN CENTER IS A PLACE FOR YOU.

IT REMAINS A PLACE OF HIGH ART IT REMAINS A PLACE WHERE PEOPL GO TO THEIR CLOSETS AND TAKE OUT THEIR LOVELY DRESSES AND GO TO THE METROPOLITAN OPERA ON SPECIAL OCCASION BUT I THINK IT HAS BECOME PLACE THAT IS MUCH MORE OPEN MUCH BROADER, MUCH MOR DEMOCRATIC, AND THANKS TO OU MAYOR AND THE VAST REDUCTION I CRIME, AND THE VAST INCREASE I THE NUMBER OF TOURISTS, LINCOL CENTER HAS NEVER BEEN MORE ENERGETIC, MORE VITAL, MOR MULTILINGUAL, AND MORE OPEN TO POPULATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES AND OUTSIDE.

NOW MR. LEVY, YOU'VE HAD LOT OF VERY IMPORTANT JOBS BEFORE YOU BECAME PRESIDENT OF LINCOLN CENTER, INCLUDIN PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL RESCUE COMMITTEE FIRST OF ALL, WHAT IS TH INTERNATIONAL RESCUE COMMITTEE

IT IS THE LARGEST AGENCY THAT SUPPORTS REFUGEES, BOTH RELIEF TO REFUGEES AROUND THE WORLD AND RESETTLING REFUGEES IN THE UNITED STATES.

SEEMS NONPROFITS PLAY A BIG ROLE, PARTICULARLY IN THIS CITY, DO THEY?

HUGE, HUGE.

ONE OUT OF EVERY SIX WHITE-COLLARED JOBS IN THE CITY, NONPROFIT.

15% OF THE CITY'S GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT, NONPROFIT FROM AN ECONOMIC POINT OF VIEW IT'S HUGE, BUT ALSO WHAT ATTRACTS PEOPLE TO THE CITY?

FIRST CLASS HOSPITALS, FIRST CLASS UNIVERSITIES, FIRST CLAS MUSEUMS AND PERFORMING ART INSTITUTIONS AND ALL OF THEM HAVE IN COMMON THAT THEY ARE NONPROFIT IN NATURE, SO THE NONPROFIT COMMUNITY IN NEW YORK MAKES AN ENORMOUS CONTRIBUTION TO THE QUALITY OF LIFE.

MR. LEVY, YOU'RE LEAVING YOUR POST AT THE HELM OF LINCOL CENTER WHAT'S NEXT FOR REYNOLD LEVY

WELL, I'VE SAID BEACHES AND BOOKS.

I'M NOT SURE HOW MUCH OF THE BEACH PART, BUT I'M WORKING ON A BOOK THAT I HOPE TO COMPLETE B THE MIDDLE OF NEXT JUNE.

I'LL SERVE ON A COUPLE O CORPORATE BOARDS I WAS A TENURED PROFESSOR AT THE HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL.

I'LL DO SOME TEACHING AT HBS AND THERE ARE A COUPLE OTHER OFFERS I AM ENTERTAINING DOW THE ROAD

WHAT'S THE WORKING TITLE OF THE BOOK 'THEY TOLD ME NOT TO TAKE THAT JOB.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US

THANK YOU

> NEW YORKERS SOMETIMES FORGET THAT THE NATURAL WORLD EXISTS IN BETWEEN AND ALL AROUND THE CONCRETE STEEL AND BUSY URBA ENVIRONMENT HUMANS HAVE BUILT.

IN A NEW PBS NATURE DOCUMENTAR THIS MONTH, YOU'RE GOING T LEARN ALL ABOUT A NEW HYBRID SPECIES, THE COYWOLF MEET THE COYWOLF PREMIER JANUARY 22nd AT 8:00 P.M. ON PBS STATIONS TWO BIOLOGISTS TRACKING COYWOLFS ARE HERE IN NEW YORK AND WE'LL HEAR FROM THEM IN A MOMENT FIRST, HERE'S AN EXCERPT FRO 'MEET THE COYWOLF.

♪♪

A NEW WILD ANIMAL HAS EMERGED ON THE SCENE IN NORTH AMERICA.

THEY HAVE LONG LEGS, THEY HAVE THICK FUR, THEY LOOK VERY WOLF-LIKE.

THESE STEALTHY CREATURES HAVE SLIPPED UNNOTICED INTO OUR CITIES

WE HAVE A MEDIUM-SIZE CARNIVORE LIVING IN OUR MIDST.

A FORMIDABLE CREATURE, WHIC IS GOING TO DO VERY WELL

THIS NEW TOP PREDATOR LIVES ALONGSIDE US IT'S MASTERED THE ART OF BLENDING INTO THE BACKGROUND AND IS SEEN ONLY BY THE LUCKY FEW.

MEET THE COYWOLF IN THE 1990s, A FEW COYWOLFS WERE SEEN IN THE OUTER BURROS IN NEW YORK CITY IN QUEENS AND TH BRONX, BUT THEY WERE THOUGHT T BE OUTLIERS MOVING THROUGH I SEARCH OF TERRITORY.

NOW, TWO WILDLIFE BIOLOGISTS ARE SETTING OUT TO PROVE THAT THIS MAY NO LONGER BE THE CASE.

A LITTLE RED LIGHT HERE O THE FRONT OF THESE CAMERAS S WHEN IT DETECTS MOVEMENT, IT GOES RED WE'RE SHOWING PEOPLE THAT IMAG IN THEIR BACKYARD, THAT SAME BACKYARD THEY ARE AFRAID, OH CAN I WALK MY DOG HERE THIS IS WHAT YOU WORRY ABOUT I THINK HUMANS ARE USED TO THEM.

I THINK THE NEXT STAGE OF TH RESEARCH IS GET THESE CAMERA INTO THOSE PARTS WE HAVEN'T BEEN IN, NUMBER ONE, CENTRAL PARK IT'S THE NUMBER ONE PARK ISOLATED FROM OTHER AREAS, S FROM A SCIENTIFIC STANDPOINT IT'S AN INTERESTING PLACE FOR US TO STUDY THERE IS A CORRIDOR THAT THE COYOTES CAN FOLLOW STRAIGHT FROM BASICALLY THE NORTH PART OF TH BRONX STRAIGHT TO MANHATTAN AN UP TO CENTRAL PARK THAT'S HAPPENED BEFORE SO THE COYOTE THAT WE HAVE HER THAT MIGHT MAKE IT TO CENTRA PARK, ITS ANCESTORS SOMEWHER ALONG THE LINE BRED WOLVES I ONTARIO.

SCIENTISTS LIKE WECKEL AN MAGGIE BELIEVE IT'S NOT QUESTION OF IF, BUT WHEN COYWOLFS WILL MAKE A HOME FO THEMSELVES IN THIS MOST URBAN OF CITIES

JOINING ME NOW ARE TH BIOLOGISTS THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOININ ME

THANK YOU FOR HAVING US

THESE ARE INTERESTING ANIMALS, BUT WHAT DREW YOU T STUDY THEM

IT'S A WONDERFUL FANTASTI PHENOMENON AND GROWING UP IN NEW YORK CITY, KNOWING I DON'T HAV TO GO TO A REMOTE JUNGLE I PRETTY EXCITING.

NEW YORK CITY AND LONG ISLAND IS ONE OF THE LAST PLACES FOR THE COYOTE TO COLONIZE IN THE UNITED STATES

CHRIS

I'VE LIKED COYOTES FOR A LONG TIME IN CONSERVATION YOU HEAR ABOUT THE SAD STORIES AND COYOTES AR REALLY KIND OF A SUCCESS STORY THEY'VE TAKEN TO THE CHANGES WE'VE PUT ON TO THE ENVIRONMEN WITH GREAT APLOMB, I GUESS THEY'VE ADAPTED REALLY WELL TO THE CHANGES WE HAVE DONE

AND WHY IS THAT HOW HAVE THEY BEEN ABLE TO D THAT WHEN OTHER PREDATORS HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO ADAPT SO WELL TO SUBURBAN AND URBAN AREAS?

THE ANIMALS THAT DO WELL IN DEVELOPED AREAS, SUBURBS AGRICULTURE, OR CITIES, AR GENERALLY ONES WITH A BROA DIET, ARE FLEXIBLE IN THEI BEHAVIOR, THEY CAN CHANGE WHAT THEY ARE EATING AND TH CONDITIONS THAT MAKE THE COMFORTABLE IN AN AREA VER EASILY, SO COYOTES ARE ONE O THE GREAT EXAMPLES OF THAT, BU THERE'S RACCOONS, AS WELL, AND SKUNKS

THEY SEEM PARTICULARLY SMART.

THESE ARE SMART ANIMALS, ARE THEY NOT ARE THEY UNUSUALLY SMART

UNUSUALLY SMART, I WOULD SA COYOTES ARE AMAZING TO BE IN A POPULAR AREA LIKE NEW YORK CIT AND DISAPPEARING INTO THE WOODS.

THESE ARE SO SMART THAT IT'S DIFFICULT FOR US TO FIND THE WITHOUT THESE CAMERAS.

MOST OF THE PLACES WE DO OUR RESEARCH, WE ONLY KNOW ABOUT THEM BECAUSE OF THE CAMERAS.

THE RESIDENTS THAT LIVE AROUND THE PARK DON'T EVEN KNOW

SO AS WE HEARD IN THE CLIP, THEY WERE FIRST SPOTTED IN THE OUTER BURROS ALMOST 20 YEARS AGO, SO IS THE DEBATE OVER AS TO WHETHER THEY ARE PASSING THROUGH OR ARE HERE TO STAY?

NO, THEY ARE HERE TO STAY COYOTES ARE HERE TO STAY IN THE BRONX WHERE WE'VE BEE STUDYING SINCE 2011, WE HAVE EVIDENCE OF AT LEAST A COUPL FAMILY UNITS SUCCESSFULLY BREA BREEDING, PRODUCING OFFSPRING, AND THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON A

YOU KEEP CALLING IT COYOTES BUT THEY ARE COYWOLVES, HYBRID, RIGHT?

WE LIKE TO REFER TO THEM AS EASTERN COYOTE, THE COYWOLF.

ONE THING THAT'S IMPORTANT FOR THE PUBLIC TO UNDERSTAND IS THAT WHEN IT'S A COYWOLF, IT DOESN' MEAN ITS MOTHER WAS A WOLF AND FATHER MIGHT HAVE BEEN A COYOTE, THE COYWOLF REFERS TO SOMEWHER IN OUR EASTERN COYOTE'S FAMILY TREE, THERE WAS AN ANCESTOR THAT WAS THIS EASTERN WOLF.

ADAM EASTERN WOLF

EXACTLY A LONG TIME AGO A COYOTE AND WOLF BRED TOGETHER THOSE DESCENDENTS HAVE BRED WITH EACH OTHER A GIVEN COYWOLF MAY HAVE 60% COYOTE MOTHER AND 40% WOLF, BU IT'S NOT LITERALLY A WOLF.

IN THIS AREA, WHERE HAVE THEY BEEN SPOTTED MOST RECENTLY

MOSTLY IN THE BRONX BREEDING POPULATIONS WE HAVE ARE IN THE NORTH BRONX AND WE'VE NOTICED IN THE COLDER MONTHS THEIR RANGES SEEM TO EXPAND.

WE GET THEM IN MORE PARKS IN THE WINTER THAN IN THE SUMMER.

IN 2012 WE RAN OUR CAMERAS 1 MONTHS IN A ROW AND SAW THAT KIND OF CHANGE IN RANGE.

MANHATTAN, HAVE THEY MADE I TO CENTRAL PARK YET, MARK?

THEY HAVE MADE IT IN TH PAST, AND AS YOU SAW FROM TH QUEEN ZOO, THERE'S A FAMOUS 1999 CENTRAL PARK COYOTE.

I THINK CENTRAL PARK IS PROBABLY THE LEAST LIKELY TO BE INHABITED FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME OF TIME FOR COYOTE THERE IS NOT A SQUARE INCH WHERE A COYOTE CAN REST WITHOUT BEIN BOTHERED BY A DOG OR HUMAN

YOU SEEM TO IMPLY THEY AR NOT DANGEROUS.

WE SHOULDN'T BE AFRAID OF THES PREDATORS?

AREN'T THEY A THREAT TO PETS AND EVEN TO OURSELVES?

IT'S CERTAINLY NOT 0% RISK, SO THERE'S OBVIOUSLY THINGS YO NEED TO DO TO BE CAUTIOUS AN WISE

QUICKLY, CAN YOU BEFRIEND THEM

THAT WOULD BE THE ABSOLUT WRONG THING.

DON'T MAKE --

ONE THING YOU CAN DO IF YOU SEE THEM AROUND YOUR HOUSE, AN THIS GOES PROBABLY MORE SO I THE SUBURBS AT LEAST AT THIS POINT, YOU WANT TO HAZE THEM PEOPLE RECOMMEND SPRAYING A HOSE OR AIR HORN.

MAKE THEM UNCOMFORTABLE.

THEY ARE QUITE AMAZING THEY'VE BEEN ABLE TO LIVE IN THE SUBURBS WITH SO LITTLE PROBLEMS, BUT GENERALLY, THEY JUST PAS THROUGH.

MARK, WHAT'S NEXT FOR YOU AND YOUR WORK WITH THE COYWOLF AND WHAT IS NEXT FOR THE COYWOLF

NEXT IS LONG ISLAND LONG ISLAND IS ONE OF THE LAST LARGE LAND MASSES IN THE UNITE STATES WITHOUT COYOTES AND ARGUABLY, IT'S A NICE HOME FOR THEM, BUT THEY HAVE TO FIRST GET THROUGH NEW YORK CITY, SO OU RESEARCH CONTINUES AS COYOTE BEGIN TO COLONIZE IN NEW PARKS WE NEED TO FIGURE OUT HOW MANY THERE ARE, HOW THEY MOVE FRO ONE PARK TO THE NEXT THERE'S A LOT LEFT FOR US.

GOOD.

MARK, CHRIS, THANK YOU SO MUCH

THANK YOU

THANK YOU

> WHAT'S AHEAD IN SPORTS THI YEAR RIGHT NOW, IT FEELS LIKE IT' FOOTBALL, FOOTBALL, FOOTBALL WITH THE SUPER BOWL COMING T METLIFE STADIUM IN JUST A FE WEEKS, BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO B A SPORTS FANATIC OR ALL THAT INTERESTED IN SPORTS TO BE AFFECTED BY THE SUPER BOWL AND OTHER SPORTS EVENTS AND ISSUES LONG-TIME SPORTS CASTER AN AUTHOR JOINED US IN CONVERSATION WITH SPORTS COMMENTATOR AND 'THE WALL STREET SPORTS' EDITOR

FOOTBALL AND HOCKEY SUCH BIG STORY IN 2013.

DO YOU THINK THAT WILL CONTINU IN 2014?

I THINK THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT WILL BE WITH US A LONG TIME, BECAUSE I THINK PARENTS.

NEVER MIND THE NFL AND NHL PARENTS, ARE NOT GOING TO LE THEIR SONS PLAY FOOTBALL I THINK THAT'S GOING TO CHANGE THE AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE IN SOME RESPECTS

I THINK THERE'S REALLY TW ISSUES, THOUGH, I THINK THERE' THE ISSUE OF YOUTH FOOTBALL, AND THEN THERE'S THE NFL AND WHAT' GOING ON WITH HEAD TRAUMA THERE.

I THINK YOU GOT TO SEPARATE TH TWO A LITTLE BIT, BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, THERE'S NO EVIDENC THERE'S SERIOUS HEAD TRAUM GOING ON WITH KIDS THE STUDIES SAY IF THEY ARE 14 IT'S OKAY TO PLAY TACKLE AFTER THAT, BEFORE THAT IT'S DICIER BECAUSE OF HEAD INJURIES, BUT THERE'S NO EVIDENCE FO THAT IN THE NFL, COMPLETE DIFFERENT STORY.

HONESTLY, NOW WE KNOW THE RISKS, CERTAINLY PEOPLE ARE WILLING T TAKE THOSE RISKS, BUT WHAT I THINK IS FATAL FOR US IS FOOTBALL HELMET.

I THINK IT'S DONE.

USED AS A BATTERING RAM PEOPLE SAY IN RUGBY NOBODY GET HURT FOOTBALL EQUIPMENT IS OFFENSIV RATHER THAN DEFENSIVE IN MAN RESPECTS

WELL, THEY ARE TRYING TO CU DOWN ON TACKLING OF THE HEAD S THEY GO TO THE KNEES DO YOU THINK THERE WILL BE A TIME FOOTBALL IS ABOLISHED

I THINK THE QUESTION IS CAN THEY DO IT WITHOUT THE HELMET?

HOCKEY WILL BE OKAY, BECAUSE THEY CAN LOWER THE AMOUNT OF CONTACT, BUT FOOTBALL, WOULD YOU WATCH FOOTBALL WITHOUT HELMETS IT'S GOING TO LOOK STRANGE, BU THAT'S THE ONLY SOLUTION

REALLY, THE APPEAL OF FOOTBALL IS THE VIOLENCE AND IF YOU CUT DOWN TH VIOLENCE, YOU DON'T HAVE FOOTBALL

THE SUPER BOWL IS COMING TO NEW JERSEY, THE FIRST COLD WEATHER OUTDOOR SUPER BOWL WAS THAT A MISTAKE OR THE RIGH THING TO DO?

GENIUS.

EVIL GENIUS.

THE NFL THINKS OF ITSELF, THES GUYS THINK OF THEMSELVES AS CORPORATION, AND WHAT WOULD CORPORATION DO YOU COME TO NEW YORK WHERE ALL THESE COMPANIES ARE AND HAVE YOU SEEN WHAT THEY ARE CHARGING?

THEY ARE GOING TO MAKE A KILLING.

ALL THESE BIG CLIENTS OF GOLDMAN SACHS ARE GOING TO CALL THEI GUY IN NEW YORK, HEY, CAN YO GET ME TICKETS TO THAT GAME?

IS THIS A BUSINESS THING?

TOTALLY, TOTALLY.

ONE OF THE REASONS IT CAME TO NEW YORK IS NOT JUST NEW YORK, BUT BECAUSE THE TWO TEAMS WENT TO THE STADIUM BECAUSE IT HA A -- WHAT IS IT, THE METLIFE STADIUM?

METLIFE

BECAUSE THEY ARE SAYING THANK YOU TO METLIFE, BUT THE WHOL THING IS GOING TO DEPEND ON TH WEATHER.

IT'S A GREAT IDEA IF IT DOESN' SNOW THAT DAY.

IF IT SNOWS THAT DAY, TERRIBLE IDEA

I SAT THROUGH A RAIN-FILLED SUPER BOWL IN MIAMI A FEW YEAR BACK, NOT FUN.

WELL, 'THE WALL STREET JOURNAL CAME UP WITH A STATISTIC ABOUT THE NEW YORK AND NEW JERSE SPORTS TEAM AND SAYING THEIR COMBINED WINNING PERCENTAGES A THE CURRENT TIME ARE THE WORST SINCE 1966 I THOUGHT NEW YORK SPORTS TEAM PRINTED MONEY.

HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE

WELL, I THINK GOD I SPEAKING THIS HAS BEEN SOMEONE WHO GREW UP IN BALTIMORE, AND WHAT'S THAT WORD, SHUN FOOD, THE REST OF AMERICA HAS NEVER BEEN HAPPIER AND SO MANY.

LET ME SAY SOMETHING ABOU THE REST OF AMERICA, OKAY, THE ARE DINING OUT ON OUR MONEY.

WE ARE SUBSIDIZING REVENUE SHARING SALARY CAPS, LUXUR TAXES, WE'RE PAYING $200, $300 MILLION TO NEW YORK FANS S PEOPLE IN TAMPA AND PHOENIX CA HAVE TROPHIES AND THERE'S NO THANK YOU FOR US, OBVIOUSLY.

HERE'S THE THING, I THINK WE SHOULD BOYCOTT

BOYCOTT WHAT?

DON'T GO FOR A YEAR, ANY GAME FOR A YEAR, UNTIL THEY CHANG THESE STUPID RULES THAT AR SUPPOSED TO CREATE PARODY, WHICH MEANS WE PAY MORE AND WE PAY WAY MORE TO GO TO SPORTING EVENT THAN ANYBODY ELSE.

NOT LIKE THEY ARE OFF I BALTIMORE.

ALWAYS ABOUT THE MONEY WITH 'THE WALL STREET JOURNAL.'

ALL RIGHT, DUSTING OFF THE CRYSTAL BALL, WHAT DO YOU THIN THE BIGGEST SPORTS STORY WILL BE IN 2014?

IN THE REST OF THE WORLD, I WILL BE BRAZIL WINS THE WORL CUP.

IN THE UNITED STATES, SOMETHIN ELSE THAT'S A GIVEN

ALEX RODRIGUEZ.

MOST PEOPLE HATE ALEX RODRIGUEZ, SO I THINK IT WILL BE GO AWAY AND STAY AWAY.

IF HE WAS PLAYING BETTER, YOU KNOW, THAT WOULD BE AN ISSUE I AGREE WITH FRANK ABOUT BRAZIL, I HAVE TO SAY.

I THINK IT IS BRAZIL, A WELL, THE BIG STORY WILL BE WILL THEY WIN ON THEIR OWN TURF, IF THEY DON'T, IT WILL BE A NATURAL DISASTER MUCH THE WAY YANKEE FANS FEEL.

NATURAL DISASTER ANYHOW

AND THE PROTESTS AND WHATEVER ELSE

THAT'S MORE LIKELY TO BE PROBLEM THAN THE SOCHI OLYMPICS, AS A MATTER OF FACT.

PLAY BALL THANK YOU, FRANK, SAM.
