My parents came from Sicily in the 1950’s with my older sister. My father had a 1st Grade education, and my mother a 2nd Grade education. Within one generation, I was inspired to go to school, and move forward to becoming the first professional in the family and their newly adopted country. I am a physician practicing in NY, and I attribute my ascent to the teachings of my parents, and the opportunities offered to them by this wonderful country my parents were proud to call their new home. The struggles of my family are accurately depicted in the PBS movie “Italian Americans of New York and New Jersey”, and I am proud of my heritage, and of my family’s hard work and dedication.
