Thanks to the hard work and sacrifice of my Italian-American ancestors, I have been fortunate enough to become a professional author, researcher and educator, currently working on a new book about Italian feasts & festivals of the Five Boroughs.
My great grandfather, Alcide Ernesto Capitini (pictured) came to America from San Casciano dei Bagni and settled in Little Italy, where he opened a groceria on Spring Street.
He was followed shortly by my great grandmother, Michelina, who hails from Spinoso. Their daughter, born in Little Italy, married an immigrant from Avellino (my grandfather, Angelo), and raised their children (including my father, Carmine) on Spring and also Elizabeth Streets. I was born in Bensonhurst.
THANK YOU PBS for putting spotlight on the contributions of Italian Americans… truly one of the most under-appreciated groups in the country.
