Doreen P. Cugno

Vice Chair

Doreen P. Cugno joined the Board of Directors of The Friends of Thirteen, Inc. in 2008 and serves as the Vice Chair and Chairperson of the Community Engagement Committee. Doreen is the President and CEO, at the St. George Theatre Restoration Inc., a non-profit 501(c)3, organization dedicated to the restoration and the development as a cultural and performing arts center for Staten Island and all of New York City. The non-profit was created in 2004 by the late, Mrs. Rosemary Cappozalo, and her daughters Doreen P. Cugno and Luanne Sorrentino, to save the St. George Theatre from being torn down. They were the driving force to bring this theater back to life, to resurrect it to its splendor, after being padlocked for 30 years. Today, the Theatre is a thriving 1,900 seat performing arts center that hosts an array of live entertainment and educational programming.  Doreen oversees the day-to-day operations, strategic planning, budgets, programming, development, fundraising, maintenance and the multi-million-dollar capital restoration projects.  Doreen manages a staff of over 100 (full and part time) employees. The St. George Theatre hosts over 100 events, bringing in over 100,000 patrons annually. The Theatre has played host to numerous world-class entertainment acts such as Tony Bennett, Ringo Starr, Diana Ross, Jerry Seinfeld, Jackson Browne, Chris Botti, Jason Mraz, Melissa Etheridge, Smokey Robinson, and over a thousand more.

Doreen has been responsible for developing and designing the theater’s programming including the public performance series, family shows, the arts-in-education series, and the community educational outreach programs including the free Summer Dance/Theater Program where they teach eighty underprivileged boys and girls, ages 9 to 18,  followed by a Career Paths In The Arts program where they teach over one hundred high school students about career paths in the arts, culture, and entertainment  industries.

Doreen is a member of the League of Historic American Theatres, Association of Performing Arts Presenters, SIEDC Women’s Counsel, and the SI Chamber of Commerce. She served as a Cultural Development Fund Panelist for the NYC Dept. of Cultural Affairs from 2010 to 2015. Doreen serves as a board member for the Staten Island Business Outreach Center and Co-Chairs their annual Women Empowerment Breakfast. She is also on the Steering Committee for the Staten Island Chamber of Commerce, North Shore Business Improvement District. She holds a B. A. in Dance with a Minor in Music from Point Park University. Before taking on the position at the SGT in 2004, Doreen had an extensive career as a dance educator/choreographer in Staten Island for over 20 years. She is the co-owner of the family business Mrs. Rosemary’s Dance Studio that was established in 1959. Doreen also taught art, kindergarten to eighth grade at a local Catholic School from 1988 to 1995.

Doreen has won many prestigious awards including the Mayor’s Arts & Culture Award, NY State’s Women of Distinction Award, Staten Island Advance Women of Achievement, Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden Neptune Award for the Arts, YMCA Community Impact Service Award, NY City & State Top 100 Influential Business Leaders in Staten Island, to name a few.

Doreen resides in Staten Island with her husband Michael and their two children, Michael-Scott and Rose.
