Bernard M. Hartnett, Jr.

Life Director

Bernie Hartnett served as Chairman of The Friends of Thirteen, Inc. from June 1995 until June 2000.  He has been a Director of the Friends since 1988 and was elected a Life Director in 2007.  He has had a long career practicing law starting in 1956 as a trial attorney for the National Labor Relations Board in its New York, Washington, D.C. and Newark offices. In 1958, he was an associate with Joseph P. Dunn representing local trade unions.  From 1959 through 1963, he was a labor attorney with Western Electric Company in New York City. Bernie acted as General Attorney for New Jersey Bell from 1963 until 1973, responsible for regulatory, anti-trust and labor matters. In 1973, he rejoined Western Electric Company as their Labor Counsel responsible for handling all labor, personnel, and benefit law matters. He was elected Vice President and General Counsel of New Jersey Bell in 1975 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1991. He also served as Corporate Secretary and as a member of the company’s Board of Directors. From 1991 until 2001, he served as Counsel to the law firm of Schiller, Squeo and Hartnett and recently was of counsel to the law firm of Connell Foley LLP. He is admitted to practice law in New York and New Jersey and before the UNITED STATES Supreme Court and the UNITED STATES Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit. He is a member of the American, New Jersey, and Hudson County Bar Associations. Mr. Hartnett graduated from St. Peter’s College with a B.A. degree and from Seton Hall Law School with a J.D. degree. He resides in Jersey City, New Jersey.  He’s now fully retired from the practice of law.
