Genes at Work
Using online content from
INNOVATION, the Web companion piece to
Thirteen/WNET's three-part PBS series, students will
investigate how dominant traits, genes, and DNA determine the
physical characteristics of a subject. The lesson focuses on stories
in Program 1 of INNOVATION: Sifting the Genes of Life and Death, A
Genetic Rescue for a Tattered Immune System, and The Making of a New
Egg. Students will identify dominant and recessive traits, make
predictions about the physical characteristics of a chosen subject,
and make a prognosis on the health of the subject. Students will
chart the genetic characteristics of two sets of parents, answering
questions about the potential genetic makeup of their progeny.
