Grade Levels: 1-4
The day is created for small groups of children in grades 1-4, with no more than twelve in a group. You can tailor it to meet the need of your program - for example, you can involve all children in grades 1-4 or have separate ZOOM days for different grade levels. You may want to include 5th graders as well, if appropriate. We recommend that one staff member lead the ZOOM Day initiative - organizing and directing the group leaders.

Prerequisite:
This activity is designed for a 9:00AM - 5:00PM summer day camp program. If this timeframe does not coincide with your organization's program, the day can be altered accordingly. Each activity runs for approximately an hour. The schedule may need to be adjusted to take into account the time required to switch activity locations.

In order for the day to be a success, staff members involved should meet in advance to prepare. Each group leader will need to prepare individually, as well.
  • Record a tape of a ZOOM episode, which runs thirty minutes (check local listings for time). All participating group leaders should watch the episode.
  • Preview the ZOOM Web site with the group leaders, http://pbskids.org/zoom/ and familiarize yourselves with the range of activities related to the program. The Web site lists hundreds of activities that are divided into categories. For the ZOOM Day, children participate in activities from five of the categories --ZOOMdo (arts and crafts), ZOOMsci and ZOOMphenom (science), CafeZOOM (cooking), and ZOOMgames (circle games and relay races).
  • Below is a list of suggested ZOOM Day activities, chosen based on age appropriateness, cost, use of recycled items, and inclusiveness (i.e, games where all children participate throughout the game). The ZOOM Day leader should prepare a packet for each group leader with the activities their group will be doing throughout the day. (The Web site includes printer-friendly versions of all activities.) Group leaders should take time to review the activities in advance.

  • If you have a computer lab, group leaders who will work with children in the lab should be particularly familiar with the "Games" and "New From You!" sections of the ZOOM Web site.
  • Prepare a large "Welcome to the ZOOM Day Extravaganza!" banner to be prominently displayed, as well as a schedule of the day's events and location of each activity on poster board. The banner should resemble the distinctive ZOOM lettering with orange and yellow stripes and the schedule should also have bright colors to reflect the zany nature of the day.
  • Prepare a poster of the survey question that children will respond to in the opening session, which is based either on a question from the taped episode or the Web site's "Sound Out" section. You can also use suggested alternative questions such as: "What's your favorite way to be artsy?" or "If you could change one thing about your neighborhood, what would you do?" Prepare an additional piece of poster board with the outline of a bar graph and the title of the survey question asked of children.
Materials:

Make a list of the materials you'll need for each activity you choose to do. Start gathering materials at least a week in advance. Create a flyer for parents that explains the upcoming ZOOM Day Extravaganza and provides a list of household items for them to send in with their children. If appropriate, ask parents for donations of food items and/or paper goods that you'll need for the day. Be sure to invite parents to volunteer to help out during the day and to come watch the final wrap-up session where children share and show highlights of the day.

Take inventory a few days prior to the event and collect and/or purchase remaining items. In addition to the materials listed for each activity, you'll need vases for the lunch table decorations. Group leaders will need:
  • a television and VCR to show the ZOOM episode
  • an easel to display the day's schedule
  • poster paper
  • markers
  • Internet-connected computers with the ZOOM Web site bookmarked:

Academic Goals:
    Children will:
    • sharpen literacy skills: note taking, reading and following the day's agenda and recipes, writing poetry, short story and narrative pieces
    • develop and/or review math skills
    • explore and problem solve a variety of science inquiry topics through hands-on experiments and discussion
Social Goals:
    Children will:
    • have opportunities to work in small groups on cooperative projects and games
    • have fun together interacting in a range of creative, challenging, and stimulating activities
    • work cooperatively in preparing food and decorations and setting it up for the entire summer camp program
Steps

Introduction (9:00 - 10:10AM)
  1. Have the children sit in small groups according to age/grade level. Introduce them to the special day based on the public television program ZOOM, with which children may be familiar. Ask children who have seen the show to raise their hands and give examples of their favorite ZOOM activities; write these activities on poster paper. Before showing the ZOOM video, tell the children to see what activities are in this particular episode. Give the children paper and pencils to write down their answers and then play the ZOOM video.
  2. After watching the show, ask children which activities they wrote down or remembered; list these on poster paper. Point out the distinction between examples of activities and the larger category to which they belong; for example, making a robot out of legos is an activity example, while ZOOMscience is a larger category.
  3. Divide the children into groups of four or five. Show them all a poster board with a survey question from the show or the Web site and ask children to respond to it in their groups. Explain that one child in each group should tally up the responses. Ask each child to predict which answer will be most popular overall. There should be at least one group leader sitting with each group of children to facilitate this part of the activity.
  4. Ask the children how the results can be shown graphically. If some children say "a bar graph," reinforce that idea; otherwise, introduce the concept. Explain (and show) that to make a bar graph, you draw horizontal and vertical axes. Label the vertical axis "Number of Students." At the bottom, list the different responses and assign each a color. Then, ask a child from each group to report the responses to the larger group and add squares of the appropriate colors to represent the children's responses on the graph. When all the results have been graphed, ask the children if their predictions were correct.
  5. Review the schedule of the day, pointing out the variety of activities they will be doing. Then, send the children to their first activity. It would be advisable to have at least one staff member or intern alert groups a few minutes before it is time to switch activities and then to make sure each group moves to the next activity on time.
Activity 1 (10:20-11:10AM)
  1. Do the appropriate activity according to grade level. All activities can be found on the ZOOM Web site, http://www.pbskids.org/zoom. Select the "Activities From the Show" section and then the corresponding category.

    Grade 1
    ZOOMdo
    - Button Flowers and Paper Flowers
    The youngest children will make two types of flowers that they can arrange in vases and put on the tables where children will be eating lunch.

    Grade 2
    ZOOMsci
    - Puff Mobile, Color Splash, Submarine Race, Square Walk
    Do any number of these activities, time permitting. They focus on engineering, fluids, forces and energy, and patterns respectively.

    Grade 3
    CafeZOOM
    - Peanut Butter and Jelly Cake, and Homemade Lemonade
    Before the activity, children will need to wash their hands and put on latex gloves. Divide the group in two; one team makes the cake, the other, the lemonade. Lay out all ingredients and give instructions on how to proceed before the children begin making the food. After the items are prepared, if possible, chill the lemonade, and cover the cake until lunchtime.

    Grade 4

    - Paper Towel Chromatography, Water Magnifier, House Number Game, ZOOMroom Card Trick
    Divide the children into smaller groups and have them rotate among the activities, time permitting.
Activity 2 (11:15AM -12:10PM)
  1. Do the appropriate activity according to grade level. All activities can be found on the ZOOM Web site, http://pbskids.org/zoom. Select the "Activities From the Show" section and then the corresponding category.

    Grade 1

    Children in this group try their hands at activities that focus on fluids, forces and energy.

    Grade 2
    ZOOMdo
    - Funky Photo Figures, and Papel Picado
    Divide children into two groups: one works on making figures out of photographs of children in the program, which they add to the vases made by the 1st graders in the previous hour. The other group makes the tissue paper banners and hangs them in the lunch area to further decorate the room.

    Grade 3
    ZOOMphenom
    - Paper Towel Chromatography, Water Magnifier, ZOOMroom Card Trick
    Lead the children in each of the activities, time permitting.

    Grade 4
    CafeZOOM
    - Burrito Bites, and Fruit Kabobs
    Before the activity, children will need to wash their hands and put on latex gloves. Divide the group in two; one team makes the burritos, the other, the fruit kababs. Lay out all ingredients and give instructions on how to proceed before the children begin making the food. After preparing the food, children should arrange the food on plates for each group if serving family style or for a buffet.
Activity 2 (11:15AM -12:10PM)

  1. Children will sit with their group for lunch at the designated area. Lunch can be served buffet style with one of the groups serving the food or portions at each table to eat family style. After children have eaten, they can play circle games led by the group leader. The below activities are from the ZOOM Web site from the "Activities from the Show" section and select "Zoom Games."

    For 1st and 2nd graders:

    For 3rd and 4th graders:

Activity 3 (1:00 - 2:00PM)
  1. Do the appropriate activity according to grade level. All activities can be found on the ZOOM Web site, http://www.pbskids.org/zoom. Select the "Activities From the Show" section and then the corresponding category.

    Grade 1
    ZOOMdo
    - Junk Creature
    Divide children into pairs. Each pair will make a creature out of recycled items from home.

    Grade 2
    ZOOMsci
    - Geodesic Dome and Paper Tower
    Divide children into two groups. Each group will construct both of these projects. Depending on the number of children and their ability to work together, the group leader can divide the groups into an additional number of smaller groups if necessary.

    Grade 3
    ZOOMsci
    - Flinker, Pennies and Water, Delta Wing Flyer, Doorman's Code
    Divide the children into three smaller groups. Each group will rotate among the first three activities. Then, they do Doorman's Code together as a group. These activities allow children a chance to deal with engineering, fluids, forces and energy, and patterns.

    Grade 4
    ZOOMdo
    - Group Picture Project
    Children in this group will begin the project and the 3rd graders will participate in the following hour. Give out the appropriate number of squares for each child to complete a piece of the picture. The group leader who prepares this project will need to make as many squares as there are children in the two groups.
Activity 4 (2:00 - 3:00PM)
  1. Do the appropriate activity according to grade level. All activities can be found on the ZOOM Web site, http://www.pbskids.org/zoom. Select the "Activities From the Show" section and then the corresponding category.

    Grade 1 and 2
    ZOOMgames
    - Relay Races
    Both grades will go outside together to a suitable area to play relay race games. Divide the children into two equal groups, either by grade, or mixed grade groups. The races are as follows, and can be played in any order:
    • Apple Relay
    • Crab Walk Relay
    • Jump Rope Relay
    • Restaurant Relay
    • Cooperation Dots
    • Penny Relay
    • Squat Race
    • Three-Legged Ball-On-Spoon

    Make sure to leave time for a fun final race where children need to be in groups of three:
    • Mummy Wrap Rap

    In the event of rain, children will do indoor game activities. Suggested games include:
    • Musical Clothes
    • I Woke Up Saturday Morning
    • Animal Alphabet
    • Doodles
    • Rhyming Pairs

    Grade 3
    ZOOMdo
    - Group Picture Project
    Children in this group work on the same project as the 4th graders did the previous hour. When they have all finished their individual squares of work, they can put the entire picture together and display it in the area where all groups will meet together.

    Grade 4
    ZOOMsci
    - Pennies and Water, Electroscope, Consecutive Numbers
    Children are exposed to activities in the areas of fluids, forces and energy, and patterns.

Activity 5 (3:00 - 4:00PM)
  1. Do the appropriate activity according to grade level. All activities can be found on the ZOOM Web site, http://www.pbskids.org/zoom. Select the "Activities From the Show" section and then the corresponding category.

    Grades 1 and 2
    ZOOMphenom and CafeZOOM

    Open the session by doing "After Image" or "Hand/Foot Coordination" in the ZOOMphenom category. Afterwards, ask the children to wash their hands and put on gloves before handling food.

    Divide the 1st graders into two groups. They will make:
    • Ticklish Tea
    • Ants on a Log

    Tip: For making Ants on a Log, a portion of the "logs" can be filled with cream cheese in case children are allergic to peanut butter.

    Divide the 2nd graders into two groups. They will make:
    • Edible Spiders
    • Walking Salad

    Tip: After the 1st and 2nd graders have completed their cooking projects, they can cover them and place where children will be having their snack.

    Grades 3 and 4
    ZOOMgames
    - Relay races
    Both grades will go outside together to a suitable area to play relay race games. Divide the children into two equal groups, either by grade or mixed grade groups. The races are as follows, and can be played in any order:

    If there is a computer lab on site, the appropriate number of children can go there during this period. Prepare the computers in advance so when the children arrive they are on the ZOOM homepage. Tell them to go to "GAMES," where they can choose from:
    • Noodle - children can learn trivia about the program, for children who are familiar with it.
    • Ubbi Dubbi Translator - children can write notes to each other and see if they can understand them -- or use the translator if they get stuck!
    • Other choices (for example, Music, Jokes) require Shockwave. If the computers have Shockwave installed, children can go to these areas, too.

    From the home page, children can also go to the section "NEW FROM YOU!" to select:
    • Poems & Tales - children can read their peers' work and submit their own.
    • Survey - children can check out previous survey questions and submit a new Sound Out.
    • Zoom Into Action - children can read about what volunteer projects their peers are doing, submit their own activities, or write about a volunteer effort they would like their program to get involved with.
Activity 6: Small group and Large Group Wrap-Up (4:00-5:00PM)
  1. For the first half hour of the period, children meet in small groups to write a short poem or story about their day, a favorite activity, or the results from a ZOOMsci or ZOOMphenom activity.
  2. Gather all children together in a group and serve the children a snack. Display the afternoon projects:
    • Junk Creatures (1st grade),
    • Geodome and/or Paper Towers (2nd grade)
    • Group Picture (3rd and 4th grade)
    Ask one child from each group to read his or her writing; ask another student from each group briefly to describe his or her afternoon project.
  3. Conclude this successful ZOOM Day Extravaganza! Remember to thank all the children, staff, and parents for their participation.
Follow Up Activities:
  1. Children can post their poems, stories, and results from their activities on the ZOOM Web site.
  2. Ask children to go to the ZOOM Web site and identify a specific number of additional activities they would like to do in the program another day.
  3. Identify several fun ZOOM Into Action projects and have kids present them to one another. Take a vote and choose a project for children to work on.
