River is not the Thames in this sleuth series set in London. Tender and witty as it is unsettling and brutal, River centers on British detective John River, played by Stellan Skarsgard (Dune, Mamma Mia!). Forever crossing between the worlds of the living and the dead, he strives to solve cases of those who occupy his troubled psyche. He’s a genius whose unstable mind leaves him haunted by the ghosts of murder victims. His colleagues are drawn to admire and question his views.
You might wonder which worlds of drama you’re crossing during the six episodes. There are plenty of co-stars from other PBS favorite series. Nicola Walker (Annika, Unforgotten), Lesley Manville (Magpie Murders), Adeel Akhtar (Les Misérables), and Eddie Marsan (Ridley Road) co-star.
