When George and Ira Gershwin began setting DuBose Heyward’s lyrics to the now iconic tune of Summertime in 1933, the brothers likely had no idea how ubiquitous their composition would eventually become. Over 25,000 different versions have been recorded, with seven making it to the US pop charts, and many other songs counting Summertime amongst their inspirations.

We’ve put together a playlist with some of our favorite covers below. Have a listen to the classic versions – as well as a couple unusual ones – and see just how far the influence extends.
