I think Dr. Gomez (?) from the Charlottesville, Virginia hospital put it best. It isn't the actions or drugs or tubes at the end of the death process that are the ultimate cause of death. It's the illness that's the first, last and ultimate cause of death.

I think this is a wonderful program and brings to light many issues with death and dieing. I would like to know though, why is it the medical profession and hospice, do not tell the family that in the quest for pain management, that usually the strong opiates perscribed are what induces coma, and suppresses the respiratory system, so that the drugs is the ultimate cause of death? They are so honest and straightforward about being terminally ill, and saying death is imminent, but this part of it, they really don't like to discuss. Why? Is it because of the legal/ethical complications of this? Isnt this a form of euthanasia? Thank you for your replies. :-)

i am trying to find out if this program was the one shown on PBS that included a story about a man and wife, the man had several kinds of cancer, was terminal, and had decided to treat agressively the ones that would definitely extend his life and or give me the remaining time to Live, meanwhile treating the one he could not with pain meds, stopping the use when he wanted to be able to have an evening to Talk..clearly with friends or his wife, had a group of friends that met with him once a week in a field to just lay back watch the sky, and Talk. it follwed him thru till the moment that he and his wife knew woudl come where he went (at home) into a sort of coma..she knew to keep talking to him even then...knowing that if things went as expected by morning he would be gone mnver to say another word..but she talked because she had beenn told that even then he could probably hear here. Before morning , eyes still closed ..he said ..i love you. then passed. I have a friend who's husband has been recently diagnosed with terminal cancer..i wanted her to see this...but i have tried to search and cannot find Exactly the program i saw..it was on PBs but might have been a year or two ago..it was on Dying ..and living while dying.or how to ..die...can anyone help?
